I had a Oneplus 8 and iPhone 12 just picked up a Pixel 5
I thought when I received a notification the screen would wake up, like when you touch to wake the screen. The screen would get bright.
With the Pixel 5, when I get a notification, the screen does show the notification but the screen doesn't light up, so it's hard to see the notification from a distance. Is there a setting in the Pixel 5 that does that or did that change that type of notification?
Or an easy hack?

I also need an easy hack so we should recreate this post for better engagement.

It appears that ambient display does not work when your screen lock setting is set to None.
I was showing a mate my Nexus 6 yesterday and started playing with a few settings. I noticed that all of a sudden my ambient display stopped working. I did some testing this morning and finally worked it out that when the screen lock setting is set to None, ambient display does not activate. Any notifications that come through stop appearing on the screen. Setting the screen lock setting to anything other than None ensures ambient display works once again.
1. Is this a known feature / situation for the N6 ?
2. Is anyone else experiencing the same behavior or is it just me ?
1. if you dont have a lockscreen then it cant show you notifications on it. duh, lol.
2. we all have known about this since before lollipop came out.
1. I see no reason why a notification could not be shown on the screen using ambient display even if I don't have a lock screen. It is not like I have actually turned the screen on yet.
2. And yet, when I tried searching for an answer to why my ambient display wasn't working, I found no mention of it at all, not in XDA or the web in general.
Thanks for clearing it up for me, it is clearly a feature of the phone.

if you dont have a lockscreen, then it has nothing to show the incoming message on. if no lockscreen, then it would just show in the status bar.
I understand your point simms22, but I think you may be missing mine. Does it have to be the lock screen that the notification is shown on when it arrives.
For example, msg arrive, screen turns on to show msg. If I do nothing then the screen turns off. If I haven't interacted with the screen, does the notification really need the lock screen to be displayed? I guess that I'm just not convinced that the lock screen is needed to display notifications when I pick my phone up, ie before I touch the screen. If I then interact with a notification then perform the interaction, but if I touch a part of the screen where is no notification, open the device.
The above would be mute if I pick the device up and press the power button to open the home screen.
I guess I look at things a little different, I design systems and interfaces for a living for the Dept of Defence.
I have found that the ambient display does not always activate when I pick the phone up, I'd say its about 90% reliable, have u found the same ?

yea, the way the code is written, there needs to be a lock screen to be displayed. i dont really use it anymore, but i found it to be around 90% as well.
Just to re-iterate, Ambient display is displaying the Lockscreen notifications, not SystemUI notifications, so to show the lockscreen notifications, Lockscreen must be on.

I totally agree. I upgraded from my 2013 Moto X, with Moto DIsplay, to the N6. I NEVER used a lock screen on the Motox, and enjoyed being able to just glance at the phone to know what was incoming.. its quite annoying that I can no longer get my notifications to show up on my screen without turning the phone on, and pulling the shade down. I'm on the computer all day, and have my phone setup next to me and use it to get a quick view of incoming work emails, with out taking my hands off the keyboard, or even stop typing for that matter.
If I would have known that the N6 was unable to work in this matter I would not have gotten it. I would have gone with the Moto X 2 instead.
Hi guys. Do you know any, preferably minimalistic, screen lock app that is compatible with ambient display? Have tried my fav Zui Locker with no luck.

I dont think it works with any.
That's what I was afraid of. Sticking with stock locker then since I love the new feature.

For years I used my led for notifications. Even knew what kind of notification had based on the color of the led and with no need of an annoying sound.
Now I'm lost. Always on display for me it's a waste of battery. The edge lighting is not working properly (look for the thread about it) and anyway it only lights once, I would like to see it 10 minutes after. The light around the camera is useless, as Samsung didn't implement it.
I'm using always on edge, but it's not working properly with autoinput (an app I use so I don't have to slide to unlock every single time). Every notification I get the screen turns on, so now I'm using only when screen is on.
What do you do for notifications?
I started with a Garmin Fenix 3 HR a few years ago. Then to a Pebble 2 HR. Now, a Fenix 5S Plus. Added bonus: Smart Lock when the watch is connected (whenever I'm not in bed or the shower) negates the need to use the FPR.
I had an OG Pixel XL where to notification shows up for a bit with the first sentence of the notification. It does on a black screen too so great for battery, basically an Always on display that is activated by notifications. So easy to glance at my phone when getting a notification and decide whether to answer or ignore.
Now I'm lost too, there's no built in way to have the screen turn on when you get a notification so I'm using a third party app but it actually just shows the lockscreen not a black screen with the notification in the middle so it's jarring as hell.
So I purchased the new REDMI K20 Pro last week after going through a lot of reviews online. I love the phone and coming from a former Oneplus user is something. However I am having a certain issue regarding the Lock Screen Notification and I am at my wits end to resolve this.
Ever since I have purchased and setup the phone, I have been having some problems with my Lock Screen Notifications. The phone screen automatically lights up whenever I receive any notifications like whatsapp or gmail. This is awfully irritating as often I am driving or in meetings and it distracts me constantly. I have tried everything, tried looking into the phone settings and checking the notification settings but I can't get the phone to stop lighting up. On my Oneplus, I would receive the notification, the phone would buzz and the notification would appear on the lock screen but the screen wouldn't light up.
Is there a way to stop this? Am I missing something? Please help!

All,
Has anyone noticed in the past couple weeks that with AOD on and when receiving a notification that activates Edge Lighting, that a little Edge Screen notification bubble comes on the AOD screen while the light is on, and disappears when the lighting is over, or upon unlock?
Kind of annoying to see a useless notification bubble under the clock for 3 seconds, and it's never done it before. I've disabled all notifications related to Edge Screen and it still shows up everytime I get a new notification that sets off the edge lighting.
Anyone experiencing this?

I personally haven't noticed it since I don't use it, but I did receive an Edge Lighting update last night.
Yes, since the last Update there is this strange notification. But, when the screen is on, the Icon won't appear, if not, is is there.
LOL, I'm trying it out but I still haven't found the bubble. The only thing close was the bubble effect in the settings.

Thank you! Now I can stop beating my head against the wall trying to fix it.
I have my phone set for screen to wake when a notification comes in. Is there not a way to have the notification appear at intervals until I dismiss? The way it works now is, screen will wake when a notification comes in, and stays on briefly, then goes off...and that's it. Am I to understand that unless I notice that one brief notification, the only way to see if I have an email/text/etc is to open the phone and look? No notification light and one measly, brief notification? Is that it? Help!

This is a minor gripe of mine as well. Plenty of forehead but no notification light. CleanSlate kernel has this option but I haven't tried it out yet

That's what the always on display is for. In your case, double tap to wake would work too.
