I recharged my phone in an hour when it had just powered off by itself for being too low... I used it for like 5 minutes and it was already down to 80%... Bad battery?

Sure sounds like a bad battery.
Just to make sure...
1) make sure you don't have some app that is running GPS
2) If not needed, try turning off BlueTooth
Those two items will drain battery faster than usual.
I sometimes find the battery is really inaccurate, depends on if the phone's running hot or whatnot...
Also you might want to get a task manager and periodically close all the apps (some apps have a one-click kill all widget), and turn off syncing, gps, and bluetooth
Battery indicator hasn't always been accurate or me - even with a brand new battery
There are several apps/widgets that are poorly coded which cause high battery drain as well.
Try only using stock widgets as well, I find that helps alot.

Yea, the only Widget I run thats not stock is Beautiful Widgets Home Small, set to update every 2 hours.
I have bluetooth and GPS off always unless I'm actively using them. I just seemed strange it was so fast to recharge mainly.
I've noticed the battery capacity jumps up and down depending on what you are doing. For example if I disable 3G, it jumps up, if I enable it, it might jump down 10% briefly then go back to where it was...
Very strange.
Also, I find the app Juice Defender (free version) is a life saver. My battery life has gone from around 12 hours to > 2 days since using it.
What it does is disable your 3G AP and only enables it every X minutes for Y minutes.. I think the default is 15/2. The result is you still get your notifications (a few mins behind), but your battery lasts WAAAYYYY longer.

Thanks for the tip!
Now going hunting for "Juice Defender".
yeah, juice defender is great. The free version has limited options but the default options really save battery life on my vogue.
I read a while ago that there was a problem with the stock text messaging app. Is that resolved? I use Handcent SMS, but i don't know if it is good or bad for battery life comparatively.
JuiceDefender is fantastic, it works. Except you can't be listening to anything and have it running (music, podcasts, etc...) because when it kills the 3G connection the audio stops. I've talked with dzo and looked at the code myself and I don't see a way to keep it from happening unless there's a way to kill the 3G connection without issuing an 'ATH' to the modem or somehow ignoring the 'No Carrier' message that follows it...
this happens no matter what music player you are using? I was hoping it was just Cube, but had not gotten a chance to try with other media players. Is there a way to create an ap that autodiables jucedefender when you play music?

Not that I'm away of... I just manually disable juicedefender before I start playing my music... and HOPE that I remember to turn it back on...
I am not endorsing this battery/seller/etc or that this is the battery to buy in any way. Just came across this opportunity and wanted to put it out there for anyone that wanted to check it out:

Hi,
I have had the captivate for a while and it has been a trusty little phone. For past few months , the phone is not able to hold the charge. I have tried multiple roms, stock roms, and tried to do as much as I can. But still not able to keep the phone on for more than 6 hours from 100%. I bought a new battery and no difference has been noticed. I was just wondering what else could I look into. I have a Note 2, but I really love this phone and want it as a good reliable spare.
Thanks
Install the Better Battery Stats app and let it run for a day and then see what the apps says is eatin up ur battery.

I would highly recommend the "SLIM" Rom. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2060386)
I've found that it's been extremely kind to my battery with its suite of inverted apps and generally inverted interface.
My battery running stock rom was dying in ~6 hours idling, very much like your situation. Running SLIM, I've seen battery life for ~1.5 days with light usage. Not a drastic improvement but it definitely helps.
I would also recommend grabbing "Gemini App Manager" and killing off some pesky background services that may be eating up at your resources/battery life. Be careful what you mess with, but you can change the startup for your services as well as fully disabling services. (Requires root)

His issue isn't coming from the ROM he's using. It's mostly a app draining his battery.
On a side note, app manager/killer don't actually give you more battery as the process simply restarts after being killed. Android itself kills w/e needs to be killed (without restarting them). Stop using it and you might actually see a improvement in battery life.

All ROMs are certainly not created equally so I was making a suggestion based on personal experience.
No I agree, with your original post that he needs to track down the app that is killing the battery but the manager I suggested configures the startup parameters of the app (should this app start on boot/can it restart itself/etc). I found when using it that my dropbox was constantly hanging around in the background and started on boot. It allows for some select tweaking of what exactly you want to be running and when it is allowed to start.
thanks guys, I have been trying to figure out myself whats keeping the phone on but no luck yet. its just saying brightness consuming more than 50% battery and the other 25% is os ans system.
I installed slim rom last night, so will try it out today and see how this fares.
I just bought the note yesterday from a local Verizon store.
I really love it but my battery life is literally TERRIBLE. I've googled a bunch to try and find a solution but I haven't gotten a straight answer. I've heard to resync your google accounts, swipe data and reload everything, but nothing have seemed to be solid.
I am a pretty avid user of my phone and I decently know what I am doing. I am coming from a Razr Maxx x912 with CM10 snapshot M11.
So I charged up to 100% at 10:38 am this morning, went to the Cardinal Lions game. Wanted test the phone out and used pretty significantly. When I got home it was 6:00 pm and I was left with 26% battery. That is not okay.
I am using Google Now Launcher because I hate that you can't center the apps icon on their launcher.
I have location on/off when appropriate, wifi on when needed, no bluetooth, automatic brightness, close out active programs, etc. Nothing out of the ordinary that would suck up the battery.
My battery stats are reading with Android System at 25% use and Screen at 22%.
I've read people getting a total of 22-24+ hours with their Note 4. I'm not even getting about half that.
Did I get a bunk battery? Does anyone know of something I could be doing that is abnormal for battery use?
The phone does runs hot to the touch on it's back. I also get messages from advanced task manage that cloud or facebook has lagged and overdraws battery. I don't know of anything else I've done differently than any use of my other phones that would change my battery draw.
I'm willing to go back to the store and swap out this phone for another Note 4 because I do love the phone.
If anyone would have any ideas I'd appreciate it. Thanks!
I consider myself a moderate to heavy user (gmail, hotmail, facebook, linkedin, dropbox, whatsapp, skype all syncing), often reading news and diff articles throughout the day, light game use.
I only leave wifi on when i'm at home or somewhere where i connect to wifi, otherwise it's turned off.
I usually get from 7am - 11pm with 30% left. Screen on time is the killer - playing games i notice the battery drop quickly.

I would say I am at the same level of use. Emails read and write, Reddit poops, typical facebook scrolling, instragram butts, news, text, Use bluetooth at the gym with wireless headphone, but no games or anything really consuming.
Do you see my situation as typical or atypical as in, is it obscure enough to go in and ask for a different Note 4 since because of the battery?

I assume that your phone would have been using more battery at a stadium with 50, 000 other cell phones its visinity. Your phone would be losing a lot of packets with so much traffic around it

that might be the case but as I was reading forum posts about the battery life on the way home from the stadium I could watch my battery % decrease. On a 20 minute car ride I went from around 33% to 30%.
Compared to other reactions to the battery life online, I don't doubt my battery is depleting abnormally for some reason whether it is in a stadium or not.

Yeah it seems to be draining a bit more than mine. I also listen to about 1-2 hrs music (or podcast listening), plus 1 hr using Runkeeper (that by itself only drains 3-4%).
Maybe give it a few days for the battery to settle in, then see what kind of battery life you're getting?

LTE SM-N910V
On 4.4.4
Im moderate user with dropbox, google drive and 3 email accounts sync on. With power savig mode on I go from 7am to 11pm on 60 - 65% battery capacity. I keep screen on manual settings (automatic is to low for my likings) and phone is not rooted so I can't disable some applications running in background (same of them i.e tmobile my account I can close manualy in application manager). Install battery monitor to check if your phone ever go into "deep sleep" or if there is offensive app what keep it "awake" all the time.

Why do you say this? I've never heard to not use them before, so if something else is more efficient or less burdensome that would be great! My task killer has given me the message of apps causing CPU lag and overdraining the battery wit the option to "BOOST". Not exactly sure what this means.. I assume it means boost (kill) completely. Is this normal?
I'm complaining because I've heard so many people loving the battery life on their Note 4, claiming to have a battery life of 22+ hours while I am barely getting 13. I want to ensure that I didn't get a bunk battery and that I might need to swap it out at the store. I love the phone but it bothers me to watch the battery % deplete before my eyes as I use it.
That being said, I watched 20 minutes of the science of interstellar last night after draining the battery completely and then charging it back up to 100% and at the end of the 20 minutes 92%. 8% loss over 20 minutes of video should not happen. Have anyone experienced something similar?
Since Android 2.3, task killer apps will significantly reduce your battery life. When an app is sitting open in the background it is just stored in RAM and is not using any power. When a task killer tries to kill it, it removes it from memory and then the system loads it up again. That causes power drain.

Was that a streaming video or locally saved? If you're streaming over LTE I wouldn't consider that too unusual.
You also haven't given any screen on times, which are very important. I can let my phone sit idle and get ~15 days out of it if I don't touch it, but I could also use it for 7 hours of watching a movie with the screen on and kill it.

I was streaming it over wifi via the youtube app, so it was nonlocal.
My stats show Android system at 27%, and Screen 12%.
I charged to 100% this morning and am at 93% now after screen time of 13m 15s.
That's actually really bad if it was over WiFi.. I had this test done (and throughout that post), but the one linked is at 95% of 41 minutes OST (1st post on that page); I also have three emails running (Push - two hotmails, one exchange for work); My test was basically running a Crunchyroll video for the whole time.. I was able to get a little over 8 hours OST at the end of the test; However, if you left your phone on for a few hours, then that's pretty good.. remember the standby mode does kill battery too.. I use a 'deepsleep' mode when my screen is off (80%+ deepsleep from CPU Spy);

CPU Spy for 48 seconds.. I'll post one with a bit longer time next.. but you get the point.. try to get deepsleep when your screen turns off.. (for example, I turn off all the radios (except cellular and bluetooth) when I turn off the screen.. The app I use for this is DS Battery... I had the 8 hours OST test done while using DU Battery, DS Battery, and Memory Manager Full all at the same time.. so now only down to DS Battery left.. from what others say, the apps that clear memory are bad because it reloads them back into services/memory and thus gets more battery drain.. just like getting out of a car door (while you are driving to the store) every minute to check on something, then getting back in.. better to just sit and go the whole trip and get out at the end (which deepsleep mode can do).. the app can run, but it can't do anything because the wifi/mobile data radio is off.. (just like if there was no 'car' in the example);
5 minute run.. dropped a lot but still over 95% of off screen time is 300mhz or deepsleep..

Great. Thanks I downloaded CPU spy and DU Battery. I'll look into DS Battery.
Other than turning off radios when in DS, do you have any other suggestions?
I was using Google Now Launcher, which I think ran the Okay Google option all the time which sucked some life. I switched to Nova and relinked my google accounts and it seems to be running better.
Ill charge it full and then run it dry and report back with my results.

Turn off Google Now if you don't use it
Turn off Location/GPS or make sure it runs only in power saving mode
Turn off location history in Google settings
Use auto-brightness
Disable Pen detection in the S Pen settings
Disable S voice responding to double-tap of the home button (in S Voice settings)
Don't use the Google search widget which listens for the "OK Google" command
TeslaUnread for Nova Launcher prime drains some battery too, don't use this unless you really like it
Use power saving mode when going out for a big day rather than relying on it as the battery is almost drained
Disable any apps you don't care about i.e. carrier bloat, Google apps like Play Movies, Books, Newstand and Samsung apps like the TV/remote apps, video player if you're using an alternative, cloud syncing processes and print/spool ones as well. This may not make a big difference but it's nice to get them out of sight anyway.
And most importantly, as mentioned previously, don't kill your apps. The only time I kill an app is for big 3D games as I like them to go away rather than sitting in RAM. I also have a little routine, when I do a reboot and full charge, I run all of my common apps like Hangouts, Messages, Phone, Chrome and my weather app so that they are sitting in RAM already while my phone's at 100% rather than draining my battery during my commute to work in the morning. I don't really have any particular reason to do this as my batter never gets anywhere near 0% by the end of the day, I'm just OCD with seeing it drain too much before I even get to work.
I don't think most of the suggestions above are too extreme. Unlike uninstalling commons apps such as Facebook/FB Messenger, or disabling your data/wifi/bluetooth or even turning sync off. To me this is taking away from the purpose of a smartphone, but each to their own.
Gsam shows Instagram is consuming the battery, but when I check system battery stats, Instagram is nowhere to be seen. Is this a bug in gsam or is Instagram draining my battery?

It probably just means that when it is running, its using the most battery juice. Another alternative answer could be...Social media apps are always running no matter what you do. Reason being location data and notifications. Apps use "protocols" that are default a part of android. Such as location, notifications and so on. Insta could be using the most battery because its using those built in protocols the most. For example, it could be keeping your data connection active, but you won't really see that because it's not "running" in the foreground.
I look at battery stats like this...they just show you how often an app is open, not how often it runs. And yes the battery stats pages shows "background," but technically, that's just how long the app has been sitting in the background still open, after it was actively on your screen. A prime example of this are music streaming apps that can run in the background without any user interaction whatsoever by the user. Spotify is the most notorious I can think if that I use.
Example of my usage, I run spotify in the morning to listen to my music or podcast. At some point when leaving for work, I literally close it out, but once my work car starts it plays in the background without any interaction from me. That time of it running for some reason isn't showing in battery stats. There are times I have left it that way all day, and at the end of the day, it only shows spotify usage was only 1 hour for that morning I was getting ready for work.
Sent from my SM-N960U using Tapatalk
That is perfectly normal of all social media apps. Which is why I do not install them on my device and use the web version instead. Which is essentially the same thing as the app anyway.
Hi All,
On my S21 Ultra each day Chrome is the app that has used the most battery by a long way, even when it hasn't been used much. I've tried putting it to sleep, deep sleep and I always close all tabs.
Is this the same for everyone that uses Chrome as the default browser? If not any suggestions to get it back under control?
Cheers!
Probably running in the background. Brave browser does that garbage too.
Try closing it after you're done using it.
The Samsung browser runs very well with available ad blocking plugins. Great for vids.

You probably don't need to remove Chrome, simply close it when done.
It's probably polling the internet twice a minute unless closed out completely.
I'm running Chrome on Pie with no issues but I generally close out all apps when done with them. Straight Chrome is my least favorite browser though.
I've noticed higher Chrome usage than I had on my S20U. I wonder if it's due to using Google Discovery? I didn't use the Bixby version on the S20U, but I have enabled the Google version on the S21U to try out.

That's an interesting point, I'll turn off discovery and see what happens. I had been purposely closing chrome after each use.
It's running in the background polling the internet unless you completely close the app.
This screenshot was a minute or two after I navigated off that app but didn't close it. Even with no active input or being viewed it behaves like this. It's worse than Brave.
Samsung's simple pulses it's internet connection and doesn't poll unless it's actively being used.

All browsers use a fair amount of watts. 8-11% per hour battery usage is typical on my 10+ regardless of the browser.
I had the drain on chrome so I removed it via adb then reinstall via play store.
Seems to be behaving now (although been just a day).
Could be wrongly reported by device care as I don't see much difference in battery drain, though there are many factors that affect this.
Could be worth checking with GSAM but I don't bother installing that anymore.
There seems to be a glitch with chrome and Android 11. Pixel users have been reporting the same thing, seen screenshots of like 1 min active and 15 mins in background using like 20%, same with edge. Worth using something else for now
Up until now I didn't have this issue bit upon reviewing my battery performance today, I see that Chrome had 20+% percentage of battery drain, which is crazy. Considering I'm getting grate battery life right now, I'll just monitored the situation to see if it gets worse b

Over used Chrome forever to tell you the truth. Before it, I was all about Firefox. Honestly for me, it's ease of use as it's synced with all my passwords. Yes I use a password manager separate from the browser, but eliminating steps to go about my day for personal and work stuff, I prefer it.
I have Samsung's browser and Edge also installed, but only really use those for specific reasons.

chrome is a hig power user on pc, so i think it's the same on smartphone, edge is way better for long
Sync is the main reason I still use chrome, have same browse history on pc phone and everywhere else.
I don't seem to have an issue with chrome, used both chrome and Samsung for 15 mins ish and they both used the same amount of battery.
Exynos and sync is on, didn't use smart switch

Hi All,
On my S21 Ultra each day Chrome is the app that has used the most battery by a long way, even when it hasn't been used much. I've tried putting it to sleep, deep sleep and I always close all tabs.
Is this the same for everyone that uses Chrome as the default browser? If not any suggestions to get it back under control?
Cheers!

Having the same Problem on the S21 (Exynos)
I use it like 20 minutes and at the end of the day it drained ~30% even if i deny standby activity thats super annoying with the small battery in the S21. I just switched to samsung internet. Everything working fine.
Yes, all of the above reasons made my jump ship to Samsung Internet. No issues so far. Chrome has this really bad habit of syncing your bookmarks, google discover etc etc. So, even if you used the browser for only 10 mins, it will still run in the background for hours at stretch until you force stop it via setting...Well, that's google for you....
