Oem unlocking? - Google Pixel 5 Questions & Answers

I have the Verizon variant of the pixel 5 and, unfortunately, the oem unlock option in the dev options is greyed out. The phone is completely paid for and what not. Is there any way to get around this? Such as flashing stock firmware of an unlocked device?

No, sorry.
Consider selling it on Swappa and then buy the unlocked variant.

Am I taking crazy pills or does the Motorola site allow you to get a stock Verizon bootloader unlock with the standard model?

seems so, just wondering if the device will still be covered by verizon insurance if i "loose" it?, or if any advantage of doing this (other then custom roms) if i already rooted it with PwnMyMoto-1.4.3 ?

Its on that list but, you still won't be able to unlock.
I think that list is referring to the developer edition anyway.

That's just for the developer edition, I still tried with mine hoping I'd get lucky though
I see, I guess I just assumed that the developer edition shipped unlocked from the factory. Don't have that model myself.

Getting used VZW Moto-X - want root - What to look for?

Hi All,
I currently have an XT1053 on Lycamobile (T-Mobile MVNO). I rooted it when I got it, have a custom recovery, ROM, xposed framework, XPrivacy, titanium backup. It's been 1.5 years so I'm rusty on how I did it before.
I'd like to move to Verizon pre-paid so I'm looking to buy a used phone. I want to end up with the same capabilities - root, custom ROM, etc.
I'm thinking I should get a Dev edition Verizon Moto-X so that I can get the unlock code from Motorola. In order to reduce chances of issues/bricking, is there are particular version of Android the phone should already have? Anything else I should be looking for?
Thanks,
Mark
From what I have been able to find by looking at a bunch of threads, it looks like I need to look for a Developer phone with Android 4.4.2.
What else am I maybe missing?
Thanks,
Mark
For the Dev Edition it doesn't matter what version you're on, you can root no matter what.

The only reason you would need 4.4.2 for easy unlocking is if you were on a non-developer edition phone and were using Sunshine. Dev editions can be unlocked, flashed, and rooted quite easily. Non-developer editions though, you want to be on an earlier release of Android, although there is a root method for 4.4.4 now, so you may still be able to unlock the bootloader.

Unlocking the bootloader is needed to run a custom rom, custom recovery, etc. and to ensure the ability to root no matter what ROM is on your phone.
Stick with a Developer Edition XT11060 for Verizon. You can get the bootloader unlock code directly from Motorola, for free.
If you get a RETAIL or Moto Maker variant, so long as the phone was never updated to 4.4.4 or higher, you can use Sunshine to unlock its bootloader. BUT Sunshine relies on exploiting a vulnerability to unlock the bootloader. There has been some question on if the vulnerability will be patched in Lollipop and could that pose any issues for those who used Sunshine to unlock. Will it re-lock them or will the unlocked status survive, etc? I have not seen a definitive answer.
While there is a ROOT method for a certain 4.4.4 build for non-Dev Verizon XT1060, that wont allow you to flash a custom rom or recovery, and it doesn't turn off write protection so there are some limits.
Thanks Gents, very helpful.
Is there any downside to getting a Moto X Developer that is already rooted? I'd still be able to contact Motorola for the unlock if I needed it again, right?
Thanks,
Mark
Thanks for bringing this up OP. I have a Verizon Note 4 and quite frankly I'm tired of the size and it's the longest I've been without root. Not to mention the lag with the TouchWiz lollipop build is driving me crazy. I now want a smaller (sorry Nexus 6) bootloader unlocked rootable android phone. After getting a pre-paid moto g to play around with I'm digging the smaller size and the resolution is more than acceptable. The Moto G should be even better.
I initially looked at the 2014 X but Verizon never released a developer model. My only hesitation to the 2013 is Android M. Is that coming to the 2013 X? And do people here have experience buying refurbished 2013 developer Xs from ebay. Pretty cheap around $110 to $150.

To clarify - if I get phone that's already unlocked because the previous owner got the code from Motorola, would I be able to contact Motorola in the future for the unlock code if I needed to re-unlock the phone or do they only give that out once?
Thanks much,
Mark

OK, I was under the impression that they come bootloader locked so that I would need an unlock to achieve root. Am I mistaken?

People often get SIM unlocked (aka carrier unlocked) confused with bootloader unlocked when someone just says "unlocked"
The Verizon XT1060, Developer Edition or Retail/Moto Maker are SIM Unlocked (aka carrier unlocked) out of the box due to FCC 700 C-Block rules.
All 2013 X's ship as bootloader locked. The ATT XT1058, Republic Wireless XT1049 and Verizon Retail/Moto Maker XT1060 editions can not get the bootloader unlock code from Moto. The rest, including the Developer Edition XT1060 for Verizon, CAN.
Once bootloader unlocked using the code from Moto, the phone will stay that way unless you re-lock it. However, keep in mind there are 3 states of the 2013 X bootloader Locked Status 0 (as it ships from factory), Unlocked Status 3 (after you unlock via the code), and LOCKED Status 2 (aka relocked). We as users can not toggle it back to Status 0. Because we can't get back to Status 0, there is no real reason to try and relock. The "bootloader unlocked" warning message shows when status is NOT 0. *IF* you buy a used XT1060 Dev Edition where the previous owner as re-locked the bootloader, you will need the code to unlock it. The codes are unique to each phone.
I have no experience requesting the bootloader unlock code from moto for a USED phone, so I can't be of any help answering that question.
I purchased a used xt1060 dev that the previous owner had relocked the bootloader....not sure why. I was able to get a unlock code from Motorola no problem.
Sent from my XT1060 using Tapatalk
Thanks, all!
I have my used Dev Moto X Verizon on order and look forward to the XDA fun when I get it

OEM Unlocking Greyed Out?

Perhaps I am just misremembering, but on NBD90Z, if your bootloader is already unlocked, should the developer option for OEM Unlocking be available or greyed out? Mine is greyed out (Pic attached) and only becomes available if I flash a 6.x ROM.
Tinfoil hat backgrounder....
I recently wanted to verify my carrier unlocked status on my Nexus 6. I popped in the Verizon SIM from my recently purchased Pixel, which worked fine. I'm now worried that however Verizon is able to force OEM lock onto the Pixel has now been set on my N6 and if I relock I will be unable to unlock.
@mattfrazer,
Yes the option is grayed out on 7.0 if your bootloader is already unlocked. I'm on Fi, my bootloader is unlocked, and it's grayed out on my N6.
No carrier to my knowledge can force lock a bootloader. Once you fastboot oem unlock it, it will stay that way till you pass the fastboot oem lock command.

I understand that. My worry was not that lock would be force enabled, but that the option would not "ungrey" if I were to choose to lock the bootloader on my N6 again. Either I hadn't paid close enough attention post 7.0 upgrade, or hadn't gone through the 2 step unlock process since running 6.x to notice the option greys out if your bootloader is unlocked on 7.0. I must not be the only one as the description under the option is changed in 7.1 to say "Bootloader is already unlocked" instead of "Allow the bootloader to be unlocked"
Thanks again to you both.
there are 2 possibilities . 1 : your bootloader is already unlocked(check it by going to fastboot) 2: turn on USB debugging ON
im sure your bootloader is already unlocked
cheers

Thats a good question. I have been away from VZW for a while now but did they have an N6 branded to them? if so, did they removed bootloader unlock like they do with HTC phones branded to them? if you did buy one from google or a non branded N6 carriers have zero control over it so in theory you can lock and unlock the bootloader at any time regardless of the carrier you are using for cell service. I personally never had to go back so i never noticed the greyed out option.
But thanks for pointing this out.
It is gray if you are already unlocked so you dont hit that before you fastboot lock if you are relocking. Doing the slider first can be bad. It was a changed in N.

No, there wasn't a VZW branded N6. In the US, only AT&T had a branded N6, and FWIW it was carrier locked to AT&T. Usual rigmarole to get it SIM unlocked. This version had an unlockable bootloader, just like the Google Play Store version.

Question Is Unlocked the same as Unlocked Bootloader?

Okay, I recognize this is a stupid question, but because I don't see an answer I'll go ahead and look stupid by asking it. I have the SM-G998U1 (Snapdragon US) and I purchased an "Unlocked" version, which I know means it's not tied to a specific carrier. However, as others have said, there is no "OEM Unlocking" option available in the US devices, I presume that the unlocked bootloader is different than "unlocked" in terms of the carrier, right?
I'd like to root my phone and be able to switch ROMs, but I need to be able to enable "OEM Unlocking" before that's possible, right?
correct.
an unlocked bootloader will allow root/rom.
that is completely different from carrier unlocking, which just ties the device to a specific carrier and has nothing to do with root/rom.

Thanks, I appreciate the clarification.
Given the issues the new Samsung devices are having even if you can root give at least a few months under factory warranty to make sure it's ok... or risk picking up the full repair tab.

Ok, another question about the missing OEM. How can I get into bootloader mode if OEM is missing...? Is it locked out...? Every time I click "enter" for Bootloader it simply reboots back to normal mode and I do have my S21 plugged into my laptop. What am I missing?

Need Help with bootloader unlock

I bought a new Pixel 4 xl when I tried to set it up, it gave me a notification " Your device is managed by your admin". I tried to enable OEM unlock but it was grayed out. I updated it to Android 12 beta I don't see the notification anymore but still can't enable OEM unlock nor even unlock the bootloader.
I want to unlock the bootloader is there any way to do it?
The phone is carrier unlocked it accepts every SIM card on both Physical and esim.
Thanks in advance.

Are you sure it's not an unlocked Verizon or T-Mo 4XL? They can be carrier unlocked but still be bootloader locked and I'm not sure if there's any way to tell by the model nbumber or IMEI.

Hmm there is the IMEI will have VXN on it or the serial number will probably show it and such has it
It probably lies in the about phone settings

Just as an aside, I got my 4 XL from T-Mo when they had a sale and couldn't get the bootloader unlocked, but the Soli chip went bad under warranty, so when I sent it back to Google, they sent me an unlocked (both carrier and bootloader unlocked) replacement.

Have you tried resetting the phone?
No, I started with a T-Mo oem locked, but Google sent me back an oem unlocked replacement.

Try resetting the phone then check that setting
Could be that google had some type of admin on that is preventing OEM unlocking

Because you are BL locked the only two things you can try are a factory reset from recovery, and flashing a full OTA from recovery via adb. If that doesn't work, I'd be trying to get my money back.
Since your IMEI is permanently stored in a school or company database, the admin error will likely return when the device phones home (at first boot when wi-fi is enabled) and from the sounds of it, a policy has been set to prevent bootloader unlocking. That phone may be new to you but it is likely black market.
Now I understand the problem. I have tried the reset option and full OTA update in Android 12 the error isn't here anymore but OEM unlocking can't be enabled.

Yep. Looks like you were ripped off and will never see the full benefits of having an unlocked phone. Since it was "new" I would be getting my money back.
Oh thank God I came to know this before I buy the phone for myself. The problem is actually happening in my Uncle's phone.
Might have the Verizon variation
