Pixel 5 (file managers) - do ANY have root permissions any more? - Google Pixel 5 Questions & Answers

I realize with Android 11 for any app that's targeting Android 11 there's been a change in permissions that block apps from accessing other app folders. I just thought having root access to my phone would supersede this and I'd actually have ya know, ROOT!
Am I missing something?

I started using Mixplorer after realizing the change in file managers on the play store. It's exactly what you're looking for, however, there is a slight learning curve. I tried to stay away from it because of that but there just isnt anymore left thats worth anything. You can find it here on XDA. There's a setting somewhere that allows root in it.

And if you like it, you can show your appreciation with the purchase of the Silver edition in the Play Store (altough the free version available in XDA has the same functionality)...

X-plore by lonelycatsgame is my favorite and has been what I have used for many years now. Dual pane.

Root Explorer. It's the OG imo. It has a clean, adless design and works great still. It's paid however, but for only a few bucks, it's definitely worth it. I still use it on my phone, even though i'm not even rooted haha

[Q] How can I buy and sideload an app not compatible with the Xoom?

I am an absolute noob when it comes to more sophisticated techniques of the Android OS. I have encountered more than once now that I want to (buy and) install an application but it is not compatible with my device (i.e. Xoom). Could someone point me to where there's a noob's guide to purchasing and installing apps that are apparently not compatible (who's deciding that anyways?)?
Thanks everyone!
The app developer chooses what devices his app works on. They don't want a Xoom user trying an app that isn't supported. If / when it crashes, the user writes a nasty review.
I got apps to my nook color by using a couple different apps. One was Hocker, I can't remember what the other one. Essentially it was an app that allowed you to backup your apps to folder on the SD card. It made a .apk for the app. Hocker then lets you send the app via WiFi over to the other device (both devices had Hocker running and on the same WiFi network). You could also transfer via dropbox or using a computer to move the .apk over and forgo Hocker.
The other app was a file manager I think, maybe even astro? I'm not sure though, it's been a few months.
This method does require two android devices though. If you don't have another device to initially download the app, then you are going to have to pirate the app and you won't find help from me regarding that.
Thank you sir!
I downloaded MyBackup to my Nook Color and created a .apk file. Then I uploaded it to Dropbox and extracted it to my Xoom. Worked like a charm

Or we like to manipulate the data we install and download. Appreciate your opinion but I personally find it invalid.

Maybe you should give the tablet back to mommy and daddy. Play time is over!
my comment was a bit confusing, one thing is a very useful application, and another thing that I consider a top application, I use daily applications like astro or root explorer or battery saver, but this is why no android gives me a native application to do, and I do not think an application that serves to complement android should be on these lists, only that, I thought the list was more for the "normal" use of the tablet (not power user )
I still apreciate your opinion, I just disagreed with it. I felt the poster was looking for good honest thoughts and those 5 popped into my head. I use them daily if not hourly. Didn't mean to "attack" but to "educate". I am no "power user" just a user. I think this is why we all come here, commradery and differing opinions on something we all love. Thanks for the clarification on your opinion.

[Q] Adding To Favourites

Ok, I've been unrooted - but its not the end of the world. I can still use remote desktop to connect to my PC , google music work fine as does flash and the android web browser.
However, the web browser (not silk) doesn't feature on the Carousel, and the only way I can launch ot is via ES File Manager.
Is there a way I can pin it to favourites, if is doesn't appear in the carousel??
Cheers

If it features in the kindle apps list you can long press and add to favorites from there.
I mean the apps tab from the carousel, not ES File Explorer

No, it's not on that list, which is why I have to use the file explorer. I don't want to try reinstalling in case it f doesn't work at all afterwards.
New root procedure for 7.2.2
Try this and see if it works for you to re-gain root access

Paid APKs on Gear

I've noticed people cannot port paid APKs (or haven't) to the Gear due to licensing, no internet, etc.
If you have purchased the app on your account, I recommend using 'APK Downloader', a Chrome extension that uses your Google Account to download the APK file directly from the play store through the browser. Then use Wondershare to install the paid APK to you Gear
Alternatively, you can download the paid APK to your phone and navigate to "/data/app" and copy it to your computer (using Wondershare) then porting it to the Gear again.
Obviously you need root, and these are the methods I've been using.
APK Downloader link: https://lekensteyn.nl/apk-downloader
I can confirm this works on apps such as Root Explorer, Nova, Apex, AlarmDroid, Emulators, UCCW, Widgets, and I'd imagine most, if not all paid APKs.
The issue isn't with getting the .apks over to the watch.
Any dev with half a brain knows that the only real paid-authorization methods all require a network connection,
which at this time, the watch doesn't have.
I'm sure the large majority of devs still don't use any sophisticated activation methods and probably just
assume that people don't know how to pull an .apk and upload it for everyone else, but I'd imagine
that at least a couple major apps use a method akin to what I've described.
Yep, most decent apps have built in license check which utilise google services framework which the watch doesn't have

not able to install Motorola apps on my Nexus 6

I am using nexus 6 stock rom latest updated security patch. I am not able to install Motorola llc apps (Migrate, moto gallery, moto camera, moto file manager). I tried downloading from other sources but unfortunately that too didn't work so please help me on this .
Any suggestions or advice will be much appreciated
Thanks in advance
While made by Motorola and branded with a Motorola logo, this is a Nexus device. To me it's no surprise the apps won't install. As for installing them, you'd have to modify the apps in order to get them to install, as the apps will refuse to install on anything but a Motorola device. You would have to change a value in code to have the app always think it's on a Motorola device. However, there is a very good reason Motorola limits installs to the devices listed on the app pages, and it likely has a lot to do with the IR sensors found at the corners of a Motorola device. Those sensors are missing on the Nexus 6.
For the Nexus 6 the Motorola apps aren't your best options either. Installing the Motorola Camera means losing the ability to take photos in HDR+ mode; you'd be limited to Motorola's HDR, which is likely software-based and thus not as accurate. There are plenty of Gallery apps on the Play Store, and before I upgraded to the Pixel 2 XL, I used a copy of the Cyanogenmod 11 Gallery and its support libraries instead of Google Photos, though now I use Google Photos. I should have the zip to the Cyanogenmod Gallery floating about somewhere on XDA, but you'd have to search my posts. As for the file manager, you have tons of options, and all of them are better than what Motorola provided. One of them is in my signature (a re-signed copy of ES File Explorer) but you could also download Amaze, Solid, FX, Total Commander, Root Explorer (or its non-root variant), and more.
The TL;DR: My suggestions: forget about trying to install the Motorola apps. Keep the Google Camera, but seek out alternatives to the gallery and file manager.
