I'm running AA on a secondary dedicated AA phone that remains in the car. The phone has no cell service and gets data through a hotspot on my primary phone.
I'm unable to make phone calls using Google Assistant on the secondary phone. I get a "Voice commands aren't available right now" message.
Should I expect to be able to make phone calls using Google Assistant on the secondary phone?
No.nyou would need cell service on the phone, a car that allows simultaneous device connections, or use aagateway on the car phone as a wireless Android auto receiver. In the case of the last option, you will have full functionality as the phone is just receiving the info from your main phone.

My car allows simultaneous connections but only the primary phone can make outgoing calls. I can make outgoing calls through the car's Bluetooth connection, just not through Google Assistant.
The only reason I have a two phone setup is I don't want to have to root my primary phone but I use an app that isn't AA compatible. I use Screen2Auto (which requires root) on the car phone so I can use the app. So AAGateway won't help me.
It appears I either need to root my primary phone (which I really don't want to do) or get a secondary phone with a cell plan (which I don't want to do either).
I have a 2019 Chevy, it allows simultaneous connection, when I issue a voice command "OK GOOGLE" to trigger, I can make calls no problem both devices take the command, but only the one with cell service completes the request. I have my main (non-rooted) phone set to "connect first" in the car settings, and am having no problems making calls from my primary phone. Hope you figure out something works, I guess I got lucky with my set up.

Yea, if I say OK Google loud enough my primary phone will hear it but I can't see it's screen when it is in the wireless charger to confirm it came up with the same information.

Hello,
I just purchased and installed a Pioneer AVH-4100NEX. So far it's pretty slick. I'll be using it with my Galaxy S6.
I noticed that when I try to disable the Call Audio Bluetooth profile from the phone side, it re-enables itself... like I HAVE to use the NEX for call audio.
I would like to be able to turn on my BT headset and use that instead, without much hassle. There are definitely times where I'll be in the car with other people and don't want the whole car to hear the conversation. It also presents a call quality issue with the far end being able to hear the system speakers.
Do I have to unplug USB from the NEX to make this work?

I have same unit, try having headset connected before plugging in your phone. That may work

I'm bumping this up. With my previous phone (LG V10) I could select which device use to make phone calls, Android Auto device or a bluetooth headset (Plantronics). Now with a Oneplus 3T that is not possible anymore.
AA automatically rerouting "BT phone" to main AA device. That is really annoying.
If someone knows a workaround to this please give advice, thanks...
You have to have it enabled, in a nutshell the unit (Pioneer) declares that it has bluetooth capabilities and declares the bluetooth mac address when it initialize the connection, than Android Auto (trough Google Play Services which is a system app) will enable the bluetooth, set up a pairing if it doesn't exist and connect to it, so no matter what you do it will always connect to it, the only way to "avoid" this is:
a) Get another phone which connects to the Pioneer bluetooth, then connect the phone (haven't tried this, but probably will do the trick)
b) Alter the pioneer unit so it doesn't send the bluetooth mac and it doesn't declare the bluetooth service (almost impossible, you will need to replace the app on the unit)
Hi,
By default when i use ok google call XYZ the call is being made on the watch itself and not on the mobile phone.
How can i make or switch between watch call or bluetooth call on my phone?

If you're paired to phone via Bluetooth, make sure you're not connected to number sync... In order to use the voice diameter to initiate a call from your phone: settings -> Bluetooth -> enable phone audio: ON
Note when you "OK Google, call Batman" it will dial through your phone (if data is enabled it will prompt you to choose phone or watch).
Two annoyances:
1. Even though it's now using your phone, it will default to the watch speaker and microphone- obviously you can change on your phone's call screen to phone. Unfortunately, without phone audio enabled in Bluetooth it will not route calls through your phone.
2. If numbersync is on, the watch will assume it's a phone, even if paired. But, you just have to toggle it off (rather than disassociating).
Good luck!

Hi.
I have a similar problem. In the LG Watch Urbane 1 gen all worked fine, in 2 I have a problem because I am using a Bluetooth headset. And I wanted to call with a Bluetooth set instead of a watch. If enabled "enable phone audio: ON" then the watch is ringing only by the watch, as I turn off it stops ringing completely. Is there any way to solve this problem?
Solved
I solved the problem using two applications "Bluetooth Auto Connect" and "MacroDroid".
Hi, while I am connected to the AA with USB I don't see my phone contacts. There are only Favorites and recent calls.
If I use voice command /Call .../ it works only with the listed contacts.
Is this normal?

The first part is normal I think (not in my car right now). AA is designed to restrict the user from any significant scrolling through text in an effort to keep your eyes on the road. I find it leads me to become frustrated and I wind up picking up the phone at stoplights to do stuff manually, but that's another issue...
The latter part is not normal, if I understand you correctly; you should be able to hit the mic button. Then say "call Joe Blow" and if that person exists in your contacts with a phone number it should proceed or offer you a choice of the numbers that you have for that person.

Thank you. Maybe that's the reason.
After I reinstalled AA now I can use Call <name> function.
Does anyone knows how can I listen music from external USB device using the AA?
I recently purchased a new VW car and have been using Android Auto on the built in display. The first time I used it it all worked perfectly, since then it hasn't. My Android Auto no longer gives me notifications when I receive texts. And if they do show up on the home screen and I click the play button to read them, it shows the four dots as if its thinking but nothing happens and I have to cancel out of it.
Additionally, I've noticed that my bluetooth smart lock doesn't seem to be working at all. Every time I connect it asks if I want to add my car to my trusted devices. Each time I say yes but it NEVER seems to save it. It will then later sometimes prompt for permission to read my messages. To this I again say yes but it doesn't seem to make the message issue go away even after I do this. I am not sure if these two issues are related (I'm hoping they are).
Can anyone tell me why the hell my smart lock can't seem to register and remember my car? And why wont android auto read my messages properly? (Pixel XL. Phone calls and navigation all are working properly)
Same issue here
You have to give Android Auto all permissions it asks for at the first start. And be sure to use a very good cable. There are many USB C cables on market which are not fully supporting USB C features and the system do expect them.
I'm in the same situation with my VW Atlas. Problem is with both my Pixel (running Android O) and my wife's Nexus 6p (running Nougat). I have given it all permissions, including some that it didn't ask for. I also have been using the little 4 inch cord that came with the 6p, so the cable or its length should not be an issue. In addition to the above, my car also forgets its bluetooth pairings if I try to connect the AA cable before the bluetooth has connected. I've been learning to do that but sometimes I forget. It's got to be an issue with the VW software.
I have come across these issues myself in a Golf Mk7 both with a Motorola Droid Turbo and now with a Google Pixel 3 XL.
In the case of getting Android Auto to read/send messages where you just get the four dots bouncing up and down and doing nothing else, that's a setting with the Google Assistant app. Go into that app on your phone (the round G icon) and drill into settings and under Voice >> Voice Match, make sure "OK Google" detection is turned on. Even though you might not be actually using it, it has to be turned on for this to work. Totally lame and non-intuitive, but that's what fixed that for me.
As for the car falling out of your Smart Lock and for repeatedly prompting you for permission to access your text messages, I have only had this issue with AA in my VW and not in other cars, so it's a VW-specific issue and something to do with the bluetooth hardware. I do not have a fix for it but the workaround is you must have BT turned on on your phone first and let it connect fully to your car OUTSIDE of AA. Make sure at that point you permit text message access (if prompted) and check your Smart Lock and add your car to it if needed. Then going forward whenever you connect to your car you MUST let BT connect fully first before you plug in and fire up AA. It's unfortunate that you can't just plug in and go w/o waiting for BT first but that's the only way I've gotten this to work without re-prompting me for SMS access permissions and Smart Lock.
Good luck!
I wanted to share how to solve the problem of using bluetooth on a second phone having another mobile already connected to Android car.
The easiest solution would be to use a duplicate of the Sim card, but in my case my telephone company does not have that service and cannot be hired.
As you know, at the moment that a mobile phone connects to Android car, it no longer allows us to pair a second phone and use it to make calls via bluetooth, forcing us if we want to make calls to use the one that is connected by USB to Android car.
Well, using an application we can disable the sharing services by bluetooh and thus be able to use the 2nd phone. The negative part is that it is necessary that the mobile is broken.
The name of the application is: Service Disabler https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kunkunsoft.rootservicedisabler&hl=en
“IT DOES NOT HAVE THE PHONE WITH ROOT”
To deactivate all the services of sharing via bluetooth is easy, we open the application and type the word bluetooth in the search area and it will already be in the list, and now it is just click on it and we will leave the option to deactivate everything.
From this moment on, all audio from the connected phone will be through USB.

This isn't really an Android Auto issue. But I understand a workaround may be useful if you have a headunit with this limitation.
How many phones can be connected depends on the headunit. My Kenwood will allow two phones to be connected and both can answer and make calls. Usually, I have my Pixel connected via AA, and my wife's iPhone will connect via Bluetooth at the same time. I can even select Bluetooth on the headunit and play music from the iPhone. In fact, although only two phones can be connected for calls, it will allow up to 5 phones to be connected at the same time for music (I've never tried that many, though).

Most cars have this problem. I think is very useful, i will implement it. It may be easiest solution. Phone has root to work mirroring so, probably with freeze bluetooth with titanium, could have the same, but havent try it yet..
