Hey guys, im from Brazil. Don't know too much about phones, recovery or root, but the basics.
I recently bought a S20 FE (Exynos) from a importer, but the phone was a showcase version (does not have IMEI). The seller made a customisation (root) so it have a IMEI and can do Calls and other stuff normally, so as it was in perfect state, I bought. I love the phone, it has been very cool to use it, but recently I discovered that another One UI version arrived (3.1 or 3.5, can't remember). Now, I wanna update it, but I don't want to lose my apps and another stuff in the phone, or even the IMEI for the calls and messages. In the Settings App, no update could be found, and I have lost contact with the seller. So, I'm here asking for help. Somebody has any idea?
while you are rooted and as a precaution, look up apps that can back up your apps and data.
the only way you're getting the updated android version by downloading the firmware yourself and using an app called magisk to patch a big file before flashing all that downloaded firmware yourself via an app called Odin.
that's the basics of it. you want to be sure you get the right version of firmware too, something intended for the same region your phone thinks it's from so to speak.
you have a steep learning curve ahead of you.
* google Samfirm and Frija to see what they are, then search for guides here which will hopefully have links to download them onto a PC.
* google what is a CSC so you're familiar and know how to choose the right firmware to download.
* google backup android apps and data to find either a PC app or a phone app (all being well you might not need this part but better to be safe).
* google magisk version 22 and look for GITHUB page by someone called topjohnwu only. don't get it anywhere else!!
* read the instructions on that GITHUB page 3 times and ask any questions you have about it here again. same goes for any other questions that come up.
* follow instructions to patch the AP file with your phone and magisk, it's amongst the firmware you would've downloaded.
* try to flash the downloaded firmware with the patched file also using one file called HOME_CSC and not the other that's just called the CSC file... all being well you should be good.
*** if at any stage you are asked or forced by a procedure to WIPE your DATA PARTITION, you will lose that IMEI that you have and you'll need to be discreet about getting it back. it's illegal to spoof that stuff to my understanding.
folks will help you here if they can so don't be daunted or put off.

I have been using Note9 Exynos 128GB Singapore version. Last update was on October'19. I'm yet to get Android 10 update. Need to know is there anyone facing same issue? Anyone have any update on getting OTA for Singapore version?
According to Samsung, the note 9 in all Versions will not get Android 10 before February 2020. My Provider here in Europe told me the same, so i made oan update with odin.
But anyway, the update is officially not out yet, according to samsung.

If I do update using odin, will I need to do rooting? One I update using Odin, will there be official update coming regularly?
It hasn’t been release yet in Singapore.
Samsung said February. However today is Feb 26 and still nothing. The gang of three (Singtel, Starhub and M3) have to put their rubbish in the rom so they won’t meet the deadline I think. Every year the same story. Singapore gets less frequent update than other markets making Samsung phones a real security hazard. I have to praise Apple for cutting the telcos and going on their own update cycle.
I applied the update on my Note 9 but I am having battery life issues. Have to use power saving mode all the time if not the battery is gone within half a day. I will do a full reset once the official XSP built for Singapore is out.
My wife's s9 has received the update. Me on the other hand, note 9, still nothing. They are Soo freaking slow with updates.
I downloaded and flashed the German rom from sammobile website using odin. Now my note 9 is running One UI 2 and Android 10 with Feb 2020 security patch. Everything seems to be working well so far
Note: when flashing using Odin, select "home csc" to preserve user data, or "csc" for full wipe. Personally I did a full wipe
Using N960F bought from M1, using on Gomo network (previously Starhub)
Can you please teach me how to update my NOTE 9 128gb variant from STARHUB? I'm getting frustrated about this. Everyone in the whole world got the android 10 update, Singapore is always last on the list.

You should be getting it soon. As I got the Android 10 update a couple of months after it was released in Germany.
All the countries using the N960F Variant received the Android 10 update. There is even up to 4 different built with bug fixes and security updates.
Last built released in Singapore: Oct 24...

You can follow these steps (works for both telco and retail models, so will work on your Starhub model too):
1. Download the firmware for N960F model from sammobile ( I downloaded both UK BTU and German DBT rom and both worked - currently using the German one, I think it doesn't matter which country the firmware is designed for as long as it isn't tied to a specific carrier).
Note: the rom is quite big, around 5GB so be patient. I left my laptop on overnight while the rom downloaded.
2. Unzip the rom and you should see 5 files inside the folder
3. Use Odin to flash the files (please backup all data before attempting to make any modification to your software - I used Samsung cloud to back up phone settings and manually backed up everything else to micro sd)
a) download latest odin version and unzip it. Run the exe
b) Add the respective files. The BL, AP, CP and CSC files are named accordingly. Make sure to select the correct files for each selection while flashing. To preserve data on your phone, select the home csc file instead of csc. Selecting csc will wipe the entire phone giving you a clean reset.
c) your phone needs to be booted to recovery mode in order to flash the rom
4. Enjoy your Samsung note 9 with Android 10
If unsure, just google for detailed instructions on how to use odin.
Hope it helps!

You can actually use samfirm or frija(both in xda) to download the firmware within 5mins

All noted! Thank you very much. Last question. My Note 9 from Starhub is still on plan, and only for starhub carrier. Can I change the firmware even if this one still not finished on payment?

Yup this is no issue. Flashing the official samsung rom via Odin is like manually updating the software and we are not making any "illegal" modification which can trip Knox, so no worry about warranty being voided.
I have attached a screenshot of my current software info. As you can see, my handset was bought from M1 shop. After I flashed a non-Singapore rom, the original carrier info remains intact so I can use the phone without any issue. In your case, after flashing the rom, your carrier info will still remain as Starhub
If you manage to update your phone successfully to Android 10 with no issue, just post it here so that others can update their phones too. Keeping my fingers crossed for you!
Reminder: Please backup everything before updating to be on the safe side
I'm back! I followed your instruction and the instruction from Sammobile. Everything went well! So far no problem after updating to Android 10. At first I was worried that when I upgrade it, my phone will be locked or bricked because I'm still paying it monthly at Starhub. But now I can still use my phone. I made sure to back up first using Samsung Smart Switch. I love the android 10 update. Everything becomes smooth and fast! Thank you very much!
Hi Guys it would appear that my concerns for getting a 2020 or Android rom / firmware are slim to None in that I simply cannot find my type of file required to do the job anywhere??
My daily driver is in excellent condition but most definitely do with a major face - lift, make that overall as it is more than capable, I had just upgraded my wife's Note4 with crDroid firmware and it is Fantastic!
This is the type I need [samsung/nobleltezh/nobleltehk] my device is fitted with Exynos / Qualcomm that I believe to be rare in comparison to most other of its variants??
I put this out there as a real S.M.C. can anyone help please? Riccardoray.
The answer is no. I have tried LineageOS, Bliss rom, pixel experience, crDroid, but there is no "IMEI" and "SIM" meaning I cannot make a phone call. Work-around solution:
Install the rom of your choice and give up the phone call function, use it as a wifi-tablet;
When you want to downgrade back to Android 7 and use phone call normally, use the stock firmware from https://sfirmware.com/ + odin to restore. Remember to delete google/ samsung account (odin warns so) because the accounts might mess up odin restoration process.
The disadvantage is that you need a PC to use odin. If someone knows how to use TWRP to intall stock firmware, please let me know;
The stock firmware looks like this: a zip file containing AP, BL, CP, CSC files in md5 format. https://android.stackexchange.com/questions/176515/what-do-the-terms-bl-ap-cp-and-csc-mean-in-odin
Alirghty so i bought a used samsung note 8 duos. it says it on the back, in the software, in smart switch, heck even the AP and CSC files are infact for a SM-N950F
Here is where the problem is as far as I've figured out, I'll explain what the firmware files are on the device taken from dialing *#12580*369#:
BL:N950NKSU5DSK1
AP:N950FXXS7DSH1
CP:N950NKOU5DSH1
CSC:N950FOXM7DSG1
The phone runs fine honestly but its bugs me that there two different binaries mixed in my phone from what i can tell the BL and CP are from a Korean level 5 Binary (also can someone tell me why security levels matter now?) and the AP and CSC are from F model level 7 Binary
I cant flash anything stock cause its the only thing ive tried and it just wont let me. I am downloading a level 5 binary in *hopes* that it doesnt see an issue with the security levels between firmwares as i always get the fricken PIT error or secure download error orrrr the magic string invaild
All i need is a way to get my dualsims back up and running ive got two imeis on this phone which ive checked online and theyre working also id love it if i could just get all 4 files to be from the same firmware zip
FYI the only thing ive been able to flash is TWRP after which i got to installing no-verity and magisk, Ive been using twrp backups as a failsafe to revert back to the 'original' state my phone was in and thats the only thing working for me so far and i may or may not be a noob in flashing samsung devices

The reason for that is because the phone has obviously been repaired using different hardware from different devices. It's never going to be able to flash normal firmware being that there's different hardware in it. If you want to upgrade that you'll need to use the different versions of firmware for each different hardware.. I'd just send it back if I bought it from somewhere like that.
Revert to Stock
I owns one Galaxy Note 8 SN950-F Indian version,
I have installed one custom ROM for my mobile last month and now i need to revert back to stock.
How can i do it ? Once i installed stock OS using Odin but Knox looks crashed and apps like secure folder not working !
Can i get it done through service center ? When i contacted them they said its impossible as you have rooted once.

Once Knox is tripped it takes a motherboard replacement to revert it.
If SF (Secure Folder) is that important to you, stay on a custom rom that has patched SF patched already.
Literally all TWRP/Rom threads warn you of this, always read the whole OP of any thread in the future.
Yeah. Thats what im doing now. Running on doctor ketans rom.
but im little worried now. Because haven't used any custom roms and worried about security issues.
Can we still go back to stock os ? With genuine updates?

Just follow the steps in the thread below. At the bottom of post #2 you can download "samfirm" for you Pc, it will let you download the latest filmware at a decent speed. (once back on stock you should disable OEM lock so your bank app, Netflix etc will work)

Like I said to you above, once Knox is tripped SF won't work, if SF is that important to you stay on a custom rom that has patched SF. If you're worried about security updates use DeluxeRom which has last months security patch.

View attachment 5103653Hi.
Just bought galaxy s9 snapdragon android 9. I would like to update it to 10 and I tied guide from sammobile so via odin
I choosed sm-n960f Poland play and didn't work. First SHA256 is invalid then after Google and tried patched Odin I had complete (write)operation faild.
First please tell me I can install that firmware on this device
Second. Should I root first or just fallow follow instructions on sammobile?
Few years ago I used to root a lot of phones and many many times but now I totally forgot everything.
Did I miss something or are you in the wrong forum? This is Note 9, not Galaxy S9. But anyways, I'm thinking you need to manually install something. You'd get the firmware via Frija and install it using Odin.
See this post about Frija: https://forum.xda-developers.com/s10-plus/how-to/tool-frija-samsung-firmware-downloader-t3910594
If I remember correctly, it gets a download where it extracts 4 files you need, maybe in total 6. Not sure what the last one is. Two of them, though, it depends on whether you want the file to keep your files or delete everything and start over, I believe that has something to do with CSC, but read into it. I've never done this process myself.
If I root this device to use titanium backup and root for apps like gsm battery - if i were to upgrade using samsung services, would this undo my root or lock my phone from future updates in some way?
Is it advised against updating if one were to root in the future?
Lastly why can't I call record?

I will try to answer....
First, IF you Root, one is Not able to do the OTA updates! ( Meaning, you will not be able to update the phone from within the devise)
Second one- The Hard Q to address - Only due to the fact that Everyone is Different. Everyone uses their phone differently. Plus, add in the fact that Samsung has stated, that the S20 FE will receive regular security updates and a few OS updates as well!! (When Purchased in January I has Android 10. A couple of weeks later, it was February, Samsung updated to Android 11. (Knowing later this year, if not next, we will be on Android 12, says something, about the devise!))
Now all that said, knowing XDA People, in time, we should be able to have Our beloved Root, as well as, Updates that come from Google and Samsung.....
I had to check my phone (recent update, things have changed a bit...) in my case, I no longer have call recording (stock) on the phone! It has disappeared!!!
if you don't mind downloading and manually flashing the latest update via Odin, keeping root would mean taking the boot.img (I think) from the tar file and patching it via magisk and then putting it back into the tar file and flashing the whole thing.

not available from here yet, you'd have to download the firmware from one of the Samsung firmware sites / apps. don't quote me on these names, Samfirm, Sammobile and Frija. and again don't quote me, do your own searches here to confirm but if you use the HOME_CSC file instead of the regional one your data won't be wiped.
you'd lose root if you didn't also patch the boot.img file and copy that back to tar archive.

you're confusing me now. so what's the order if I do want to update and keep root?
Root->magisk patch after its released for current upgrade (any eta on time after samsung releases)->upgrade?
my last Samsung was fully custom rom and I only ever flashed radio and bootloader, I got those from links in forums. I think firmware is pretty quick in being made available on these sites / apps but I've not used them myself.
so imagine your phone is already rooted (that first initial root is more involved as there's a data partition wipe), new firmware comes out.
* download that firmware
* open the archive tar of that firmware and copy boot.img file to your phone (I've only read this once so confirm I have the correct file name).
* from your phone install magisk v22
* open magisk and options for direct install will lead you to patching the boot.img
* when that's done, move the patched file back to your computer and replace the original version with the patched one. it might be handy to keep a copy of the unpatched file safe in case you need it one day.
* from your computer flash the contents of that tar archive, you'll need to read a proper guide for this, the correct files need to be assigned to the correct partitions in Odin (the flash app for Samsung) and the names aren't all obvious. also you need drivers for Odin too, and a good version that works for this phone.
* one of those files that needs to assigned is called the CSC file, that deals with the region your phone is going to be (put simply). if you use your phones correct CSC file for the region of firmware you downloaded the data partition will be wiped.
to avoid that you can use the HOME_CSC file and data will not be wiped. on your initial first root you will have to wipe though to make sure your storage is not encrypted.
* you really want to follow guides for everything you're doing for the first time, don't rely on previous experience. Samsung phones are different to Pixels etc. some guides are written as if you'll know half this stuff already, if you don't it doesn't hurt to ask someone.
lol, I haven't actually rooted my own phone yet. I'm waiting to borrow a laptop plus seeing how things develop with TWRP / mods / new procedures.
