Is the pink tint on all devices or is it a defective screen issue?

Hi, I have noticed the pink tint to the screen when using adaptive brightness below 30-40% and was wondering if it effects all devices.
I have read a lot of people talking about it and that it happens because the screen goes so dark and some people are saying that it is supposed to happen. Is this true and if not is it effecting all devices?
I am on my 3rd device now the first one i took back after a few hours as the screen was tinted really yellow and uneven and my second one had image retention pretty bad and would happen after 5 seconds of the nav bar being displayed and i dont know if it effected them as i didnt try adaptive brightness as i didn't ha e them for long enough.
The one thing i find really weird though is that i have been using the lux app to test if it was to do with the phone going so dim and while there is a slight pink tint when putting the brightness down on the lux app it is no where near as bad as when adaptive brightness is being used and the lux app goes a lot darker.

Its because you're brightness is below 0. If you use adaptive brightness at night its lower than 0 without adaptive brightness. You will see the same thing if you use the lux brightness app.
Edit: I noticed you used the lux app, you're correct its not as bad with it, but it's still there. I could be a software implementation or a bug for all we know.

I got 7 days to return it for another one but if it is on all devices and there is nothing that can fix it i dont think there is no point in risking it for another nexus 6 that could have a worse screen like uneven colours.

This is more of a feature than a defect, frankly...
Not that it is pink, but that it can be dropped down as low as it can.
Basically, there is a minimum brightness threshold. The lower the brightness, the less power it consumes. If you set the brightness below a certain point, the colors (because of the nature of the amoled) will start to mess up a bit. Most vendors will set the minimum brightness high enough to not have this happen. Google sets it a bit lower to save a bit more power, without making the colors go *entirely* crazy by setting it WAY too low.

Its made like that to conserve power. All nexus 6 are like that

I thought it was a defect too until I started researching and like someone suggested turned off adaptive brightness which made the tint go away completely even at lowest brightness setting.

Adaptive brightness is actually a really nice feature.
If the pink bugs you too much, you can (if you know your way around a compiler, that is...) bump up the minimum a little.

What if adaptive brightness is off, and the brightness is set to at least 70%, and the pink tint crap still happens? kernel issue? nougat issue? Because it's very annoying, randomly happens to me. usually, going into twrp and clearing cache fixes it. sometimes it doesn't though.

Never mind. I figured it out. it was night mode that was causing the pink tint via purenexus settings.

Sick of samsung's bad displays

So my display after being replaced 2 times in 6 months started flickering. My phone is very hard to be turned on because of the green flickering.
I just want to upgrade to a S6,S7 Edge or non edge. i just want to know if they have the save problem with displays ? I want to have a phone at least 2 years, can you recommand me a phone like that ?
I was just considering switching to a iPhone even though i prefer android on phones ... o how are S6,S7s displays ? Samsung still have the same problems?

Samsung improved a lot on screen quality in S6 and after, so you should be okay

green flickering problem just for auto brightness problem (some custom Roms have this issues) if u will untick the auto brightness u will not have this problem

Not really, it has more issues on this "display green flickering " , on my S5 i dont get display on if the temperature around it getting cold .

Wow that's amazing. Been using samsung s5 exynos version for the last 1yr. Never had that kind of problem till date. And it have the same display as snapdragon version. And on comparison I found that this is by far the best display out there when compared to other brands.
Maybe perhaps you might be having a faulty unit from the begining.

I have the same problem here with the display and it's not a software problem (same by original os 6 and same by cyanogenmod 14).
After the temperatures are under 10 C. i can't open my s5 with home button i must do it over the power button.

Using S5 for more than 28 months still I have not faced any issue. I just had to buy new charger apart from that not a single problem and yes I mess up with my phone so much but I still working and no display failure yet. And also I have dropped it many times, it still refuses to die.
You are just having a defective model or some internals of the phone are messed up. Because Samsh*t produces one of the best displays..

Maybe thats a point, but shouldnt only the processor be different? I assume the display is.the same for both...

Nope, Exynos variant have this same problem

Im also facing green flickering and blinking at low brightness.

Its not a good sign. Try disabling your light sensor. Even then if you experience such a problem than it means that your flex cable that attaches the screen with the motherboard needs to be changed.

I try to disable Auto brightness. but in manual the problem is persist when when brightness is full low .
if brightness is normal it is normal

Yes and expect the same problems with the following generations. It's an amoled screen thing. The green colour happen when there's a colour displayed on the screen for a very long time (for example, I have a green on my screen of the size of my keyboard).
I think a solution to this problem is to set the display to turn off after 30s (it saves battery too) and maybe, if you're using a custom keyboard, change the colour from time to time. Use the brightness of the screen to a lowest which would still be comfortable to you (and auto unticked).
This last tip alone is enough to prevent greening. My flickering happened after an incredible fall (it had a tempered glass so the screen was safe). The flickering showed green what it had in memory.
Samsung has a 2-year guarantee for its products so you shouldn't worry for that period of time. Problem not solved, replacement.

The funny thing is i already did "by mistake" all the tips you said and still have this. Never dropped the phone though. This problems seems very big though, i expected a burn in to be the biggest problem, but to have flickering at a level that i cant turn on the phone. I wanted recently to switch to a Nexus 6p, but knowing that it uses Amoled too, its a bad ideea. So the only "solution" is to switch to IPS screens? (btw i want a phone that holds on for at least 3 years)

In my research thus far, the AMOLED screen technology is to blame. When the display circuits get old or damaged, they don't sustain current at low power settings. In LED screens, a back light controls brightness, but AMOLED screens send current to each pixel for brightness control. If the circuit is damaged, or any corrosion has built up inside, this could attenuate the current below the point required to sustain light flow. I see this problem with some LED and CFL lights on motion sensor switches. Just enough current goes through the motion sensor to keep it's circuits active, and that current causes a flicker in the light.
With the screen though, since the problem is only resolved when you increase the brightness just a bit above minimum, it seems anything that lowers the display power (auto brightness for example) will cause it to flicker if this setting gets too low. I also noticed that before the screen locks on timer, it dims to low power for a few seconds and flickers as a result. There are apps that attempt to resolve this by putting a translucent black screen over your desktop and apps. This keeps the power up on the pixels but adds a black overlay, kind of like a screen filter. You can adjust the darkness if you need it to save your eyes when reading in the dark but it doesn't help save power any. They also require a rooted device, which could void warranties. The reason for this I believe is because apps are supposed to operate in a way they don't intrude on each other, and a filter that lays over your screen does in fact alter the output of your display rendering. With the added security concerns of these apps possibly collecting screen shots and sending them to another site, I would avoid this. Best to use a physical screen overlay you can put on or remove as needed as long as it doesn't interfere with your touch screen options.
Ultimately, these devices were meant for replacement every 2 to 3 years so if you're like me and you like to make your investment last, best thing to do is apply any work around you can come up with. A repair shop may be able to wipe the circuit boards down with a solution that clears away corrosion, but it won't repair any weakened pixels. I'm still using a Samsung S5 G900F
- And i finally got this fixed. it sounds like the reason for this is that since the latest update your phone cannot decide whether to use hardware or software back light settings. I managed to make the problem go away by doing this:
Go to settings >> system >> About device.
Find "Build number" and click 6 times fast on it.
You will then get the message saying: "You are now a developer"
and then go back to Settings >> system >> Now you will see the "Developer Options"
Now go to Developer options >> Drawing Section or Rendering Section >> Find "Turn off hardware overlays" or "disable hardware overlays" >> This will force the phone to always use GPU for screen adjustments. no more flickering.
but If I turn the brightness ALL the way down, it still flickers like crazy, however, if that's the only time it'll do it, I consider that a win.

Red tint on dark grey ie dark theme on brightness below 50%

There is a noticeable red tint on dark grey color everywhere while the brightness slider is set in range of 0-49%. Effect is more pronounced while using 120hz refresh rate and less while using other modes. 50% and above and the tint just disappears.
Does anybody suffers with the same issue? This is indian variant of the phone.

This seems to be a problem with many ROG 2 owners. The Red tint is massive at low brightness. And yes, this is a screen problem not a software issue.
Better try replacing the unit. But there is no guarantee new phone won't have the same problem as many people are reporting this issue.
I think maybe Asus is buying cheaper display from some other manufacturer, not Samsung. Here is a similar complaint thread on Asus forums -

But 1 thing that is interesting is at 60hz the red tint is visible at 0-10% range. And the higher the refresh rate the more brightness range it covers like at 120hz its visible at 0-40% range. At 50% nothing of such sort is visible at any refresh rate.
It mostly has to do with that 1ms gtg ie grey to grey response time at high refresh rate. And yes all units will have that issue maybe not at 60hz but definitely at 120hz.
Lets see if asus has any response. I still have my return window left.

And now you know why others don't have 120Hz AMOLED panels, and why reviewers complain about the minimum brightness being too bright. Asus tried to mitigate these issues because the panels are only acceptable above a certain brightness.

I have an Indian unit and have the red tint. I don't have an issue as i keep my screen at 50% brightness. Hope in Android 10 apps use black instead of dark grey for the dark mode

Reality is that most apps including google ones are going the way of dark grey background, not pure black.
Also always 50% brightness? Don't you turn it down in room with no lights or low lights?

You sold OP7 Pro for this? Seriously bro? I mean unless one is a gaming fanatic, ROG doesn't make sense for someone who wants a overall great experience. It was evident that Asus has cut corners at many places when they priced it so low.
Even if it's 60Hz, red tint shouldn't be there. It's an example of not a good display.

OP7 Pro had its issues, I bought it on first sale. camera focus was not good, camera output was soft around corners while clicking text/documents for sharing. the screen though gorgeous looking was actually hard to use. i can recall a particular issue - i use phone pe and the menu for edit beneficiary was just in the screen space where it started to become edge and it required multiple touch to activate it.
actually rog 2 feels more premium in hand and the weight distribution is quite good as compared to op7 pro, it was top heavy. i have large hands so actual phone size was not the issue with either op7 pro or rog 2.
if one can ignore this red tint issue almost every aspect is better than op7 pro. screen above 50% brightness( which is actually not 50% screen brightness output, its just 50% slider) hdr in video playback works very well, its a quite brighter than op7 pro. Sharpness is less but only apparent on close viewing. Sound quality is better on speakers and louder too. Screen smoothness is much better. gets less hot then op7 pro, Cyber hunter on full was 47-48 on op7 pro, its 44-45 on rog ii. and the battery life is way better. There are much differences to be pointed out but the thread will grow.
Though the phone might not look professional in a meeting and i don't think it will receive timely android updates. But as a usable device i find this better than op 7 pro. If the grey management was not an issue this would have been almost unbeatable in its category and even in a higher category. op7 pro costed me 51.5k after bank discount, this costed 34k after bank discount.

Agree. Said just a hope. The objective of dark mode is also to take advantage of amoled which is not met by grey. Hoping common sense prevails.

Definitely a hw issue. Its only notcieable between 15 to 30%. I wouldnt worry about it.

If you wanna see the issue:
1) go to a dark room or in a room with almost no light.
2) add "Screen Frequency" toggle in the status bar, and lower the status bar to show the toggles;
3) lower the brightness above 40-50%;
4) use the toggle to swap frequency from 60Hz, 90Hz and 120Hz.
You will notice the colour of the status bar itself changes… it's like is 80%grey and 20%red on 60Hz; 90%grey and 10%red on 90Hz, 50%grey and 50% red on 120Hz (it's like the status bar is dark-brown coloured).
And, then again, increase slowly the brightness: the status bar will be "magically" turn back to its natural color, dark grey.
This is a big issue for a smartphone which costs about 960American dollars here in Italy! I'm thinking about to return it...

This means international version suffers with the same issue. What they have done to achieve such high refresh rates and such low response times must be the issue. Now if someone from asus can confirm if this tinting can be fixed via software update or not that will be the main factor for either keeping or returning the phone. The issue is already raised in zentalk forum and i have also commented there and the mod also has accepted the issue in his demo unit.

It's so minor I've literally never noticed it (until using your test image just now) and I've been using this phone for almost a month now. I'm filing this under not an issue for me.

Not an issue for me. My brightness is pretty much always set to 50% and 90hz - never even noticed it. If you're running brightness down around 20% then you're either pretending to be on an Ethiopian diet, or you have an issue with over sensitivity of your retinas and should get it checked out asap

This only affect night time usage with lights out or in low lit environments where you will keep your screen brightness low. Daytime usage is perfectly fine as 50% slider is not actually 50% screen brightness. So slider % remains high during day.

Its clearly mentioned that its a non issue with brightness slider in range 50% and above. So you wouldn't notice it.
And by the way if you are using that high of brightness in low lit or lights out environment then maybe you have less sensitive retina and maybe get it checked.
This will only affect people who use this for night time reading and naturally dim the screen to read comfortably. If people use normal day brightness at night this will be a non issue for them.
The main point is is this a hardware or a software issue. And i have already hypothesized why this might be happening. You can read the posts above.

I don't think I would ever find myself in a pitch black room with just my phone and no other background light of any sort. I'm not that kinda guy
If you head over to the Asus forum, this is not a new issue. Asus have declared the reddish tint is normal behaviour of the screen at high Hz, so its hardware, not software, and operating as it should. Every handset will be exactly the same. If it bothers you too much, then maybe look at the Nubia Red 3S or Xiaomi Blackshark 2 instead. For me, its a non issue as like you said, i never drop below 50% brightness, and my retinas are poor, so I would never see it.. :fingers-crossed:

We are all fans of something! :laugh:
This is my first Asus phone, and I'm coming from a long line of samsungs (the latest being the Note10+) and for what I do with the ROG2, its performance creams anything Samsung has ever produced.. so, when a negligible issue like red tint (don't forget Samsung had blue, sony had red also in the past) I'm willing to forgive it because 99% of the time it doesnt affect me. If you call that fanboy-ism, then so be it..

Looks like, red tint in the display, issue is widespread in most of the ROG 2 phones .
Asus has confirmed the same, but refused to say, if it is a SW issue or HW issue.

Question True AMOLED display ? Is my device defective ?

Hi. I don't have any way to show this but my unit has what I think is backlight bleed when displaying a fully black (#000000) picture.
This bleeding is somehow especially visible at 35% (don't ask me why) and 100% brightness.
Now, it's only really visible when in the dark and when my eyes are used to it so it's not a big deal for daily use. However, this screen is supposed to be AMOLED which presumably works on the same principle of OLED displays.
My OnePlus 3T, with the same picture of a plain black background and with the brightness turned to the max shows no sign of any light whatsoever, as any true OLED display should.
My Zenfone 8 however has a weird pattern of tiny scattered dots and a few vertical lines you can barely make out all around the display and especially along the left edge of the display.
Can anyone with a Zenfone 8 check if they observe the same effect ? Like I said, it's only visible when your eyes are well accustomed to obscurity. I tried repeating the experiment yesterday when going to sleep and didn't see anything at first but I woke up later that night and sure enough, the same pattern was visible again.
In case you're doubting the file I used to test it out, here it is. A fully black pic. Of course you have to watch it in fullscreen so that no UI element can pollute your vision.
Any insight on what might be happening would be greatly appreciated.

Used your file and checked it in a pitch black place. Can't see nothing on full brightness. I still had the home-recent apps slider on the bottom but covered it with my finger. I couldn't tell where the screen is at all.
Maybe yours has some defect but if you cannot see it without hours of eyes adjustment than I think you are exaggerating quite a bit.
I've been using the LG V30 which also has OLED but it had a grey lighting always. Don't know why. This screen is much much better.

It's not like I was purposely trying to find flaws in the display. I was looking for a wallpaper while in bed and as I was zooming in a picture, I noticed as if what I initially thought were color variations in the image remained static on the screen. It wasn't due to a dirty screen. In doubt, I tested with the black picture and cranked the brightness to emphasize the issue and it was clear something was up.
So even if this issue can't be seen during the day, it's still something that can be seen in normal use when using the phone in the dark.
I just went from the my PC to a dark room and tried to reproduce it with brightness at 35% and I could see it in a matter of seconds.
One of the key factors that made me buy this phone in the first place is the AMOLED display. If it's actually defective, I might as well get it replaced. I would just like to know if it's worth the hassle or if every unit has that defect maybe due to something in the manufacturing process.

Can't see anything like that on mine. Totally black everywhere. Try exchanging the phone. Or just give it back and get another so they will not try to repair it.

The only way the pixels can light is if they have current. Otherwise they are black as night.
Bad firmware or defective hardware.

Try clearing the system cache.

My display has that too, but only at 60 and 120 hz. At 90 Hz, the Dysplay is without lighting, so black as it should.

I don't have the option in the bootloader to reset the system cache, only "wipe data/factory reset".
I selected it thinking it would let me choose what to wipe but then it warned me about permanently deleting everything so I nope out of there.
Any other way I can do that ?

It's in Settings somewhere under storage or memory.
On Samsung's it's on the boot menu.

That's it! I got the same behavior. Perfect black at 90hz, grey goo at 60 and 120. Since I'm not the only one, I suppose this is "normal". I guess that must be some sort of compromise they had to make for the display and they hoped people wouldn't notice.
It's a shame but at least I'm relieved knowing the screen works well at 90Hz. Since the 120Hz was not one of the key features I was looking for, this doesn't feel too bad a compromise to deal with.

Same.. When viewing black wallpaper @60/120 hz, it got scattered gray all over the place with a vertical line in the middle. Noticeable if you're in a dark room. Glad i'm not the only one

Alright, so I was able to capture a long exposure photo of the phone on a black screen. The issue appears on 60 and 120Hz like mentionned above. I found that it is more apparent on the 120Hz mode than 60Hz. 90Hz is flawless. The effect is kind of exagerrated, but it was the only way to visibly capture it.

Also during restart, the "Zenfone" loading screen appears like that in dark room.

Same behavior here, 120 and 60Hz are not truly black. 90Hz is.

Quick reply to add here that for those that use the phone at 60Hz, you can enable DC Dimming, that solved the issue for my device. 120Hz still needs to be figured out though...

DC dimming can reportedly have its own drawbacks as well like skewing color rendering.

Question Picture in Picture, Split Screen etc - Refresh Rate drops to 60Hz (EXYNOS)

Hi there, I'd not noticed this before the Android 12 update, but refresh rate appears to drop from 120Hz to 60Hz when using Picture in Picture or Split Screen views. Can anyone else reproduce this please?
You can confirm this by going into developer mode and toggling to always display the refresh rate.

Try a factory reset if you haven't already and it was a OTA upgrade...

I'd rather see if others can reproduce this first - would have thought it's a simple enough thing to test and post your results here, thanks!

Hi SSJ100, I just tested this to confirm for you, it does drop to 60hz immediately and I cannot prompt it to 120hz until I return to full screen view

Further testing, if i have video running in the background, Amazon, netflix or YouTube it stays at 120 with windowed mode on

Thanks for checking! Again though, I'm quite amazed (okay, maybe not quite the word hehe) at how no one has reported this issue in this forum (and at least one other "major" forum). If they have, please excuse my ignorance and I'd appreciate a link to the thread.
I can also confirm that this issue persists even after updating to the so-called bug fixing patch "BUKG".

Interesting how bugs like this manifest sometimes huh hehe. I first noticed this issue with Google Maps when I was navigating with it and switching to another app (which automatically forces Google Maps app to become picture in picture mode). Scrolling looks quite different and jittery - it's amazing how one gets used to 120Hz!

Have you tried the tiles app developed by a user on here? It can force refresh rates very easily and just requires an adb permission.....there was a thread the other day

There is some black magic going on with these 120Hz panels. 60 Hz never seemed to be a problem before these high refresh rate displays started popping up. I remember smooth as butter 60Hz phones (both iphones and android). But now when i use a 120Hz panel at a 60Hz refresh rate, it feels like something inside the phone is in it's death throes, coughing and spluttering - the stutter is jarring! But if I use my wife's OnePlus 6 (which has a fixed 60Hz screen), it doesn't feel so bad. It's definitely not as smooth as 120Hz but the 60Hz on a 60Hz panel feels smoother than 60Hz on a 120Hz panel. Is it only me or has anyone else had a similar experience?

I'm on Android 11, One UI 3 still, and when my phone displays split screen apps the refresh rate drops from 120 down to 60.
This must be some battery saving feature, because If I toggle performance mode (processing speed) from the drop down quick menu, the fps shoots back up to 120 in split screen.
So an easy fix if you need 120 in split screen.

Yes, that seems to "fix" it for split screen. However, it doesn't resolve picture in picture fps drop to 60Hz.

Hmm must be an Android 12 thing. I'm sat here typing this with YouTube playing pip and the screen is holding 120fps even with my finger removed from the screen.
I did try Android 12 when the public version was released, but didn't like it, so downgraded back to the last version of 11, with a clean wipe.

Ok something odd going off, my screen seems to be stuck at 120!
Forcing it back to 60 in display options, works. Putting it back to adaptive, keeps the screen at 120. Even on the lock screen, and AOD!
I might try a reboot.

If you're in low ambient light, screen at low brightness, panel will be locked at 120Hz even with adaptive selected. Move to bright area or increase screen brightness and check if you are able to get to 60Hz

Yes, I've only noticed this issue since Android 12 with the picture-in-picture scenario. Hopefully Samsung fixes this soon.

Nothing odd there - as previous poster mentioned, it's always behaved that way when the ambient lighting is low enough. And yes, has always been that way for AOD too. I never understood why 120Hz is required particularly for that!

I think that after android 12, my unlock animation is rendered at 60hz because it is sometimes sluggish. Did a full factory reset and i have the last update. Do you guys experience the same? other than that the phone is perfectly smooth

Still the same issue with BULC December update. Somewhat disappointing, as you'd think this should be quite an easy fix.

Still same issue after BULG update with PIP. As a previous person has noted, split-screen mode appears to be auto-throttled to 60Hz by default, and the only way to change this so it remains at 120Hz is by toggling "High" or "Maximum" "Processing speed".
