Has anyone in their rom building and reverse engineering ever found anything Big Brotherish in the code? Keyloggers and hidden processes that phone home
your location come to mind.

But that is upfront, I'm asking about hidden processes. One that would crop up after you say no.
I'm sure Google wouldn't stick a keylogger or hidden process for the fun of it in a fresh build of the OS. I doubt it, like if you choose "No" it will tell the OS not to send location data to google.

Yes, but what about HTC? T-Mobile? No offense but have you actually dug around the code? I don't know much about code besides web but I wouldn't put it past a company to do something like that.
ATT already got busted for helping DHS spy on citizens. I'm not paranoid, just curious.

I am wondering also now that u guys bring this up. Maybe someone could ask the devs. I faintly remebering a dev saying "got rid of shady HTC log apk". I think it might of been cyanogen but I'm not 100% on that. So if I gave credit to the wrong dev feel free to correct me.
Well it wouldn't be incredibly smart to put in something like that, and then make it open source.

HTC's code is technically closed source AFAIK.

This is the biggest reason I love open source. The more people with the code the better.

Why would a telecom company put spying code on the mobile? It would be so much easier to just snoop on their server end, where there's little possibility you could discover such an intrusion.
Thoughts and responses appreciated
Privacy policy from Google suggest private user information IS sent to Google*. I am moving from HTCs WM devices to the G1 and I'm getting quite concerned about things of this nature. I can see that a user has the option to share or withold some information but not sure if there are options to withhold ALL personal details (location, contacts etc). Are there any options or methods that COMPLETELY stop ANY information being sent to Google or any other party? (Device config options, ROMs etc???)
I am new to Android and still learning so any help would be appreciated. (also posting in a hurry!)
Thanks
*G1-specific information we collect
* In order to set up your device, we ask you to sign-in with your Google Account (if you already have one) or create a new, free Google Account. Your Google Account information is stored by Google. If you change your device, you will have to associate the new device with your Google Account before we can authenticate you.
* Each device is assigned one or more unique identification numbers. These identification numbers are associated with your Google Account and the IMEI number, mobile country code, and mobile network code of your device (which is also stored by your wireless operator), and allow your device to sync your Google email, contacts, and other Google services.
* In order to continually improve our services and provide a better user experience, we collect some basic usage statistics from your device. Information such as the hardware model of your device and the version of the Android software you are running is collected but not stored in association with your Google Account. In addition, we collect some information on device-level events such as crashes that is associated with your Google Account temporarily in order to provide customer service. Neither of these categories of usage statistics contains application-level information such as the content of emails or phone call records.
* Certain applications or features of your G1 device may cause other information to be sent to Google but in a fashion that cannot be identified with you personally.
* Your device may send us location information (for example, Cell ID or GPS information) that is not associated with your Account.
* Using some applications or features may send information to Google that is stored with your Google Account. If you use standard Google services on your G1 device, for example by creating new contacts or Calendar events, then this information will be associated with your Google Account and stored consistent with the privacy policies for those services. Likewise, if you use the Android Market, information about your downloads, comments, and ratings will be stored with and accessible through your Google Account. You have the option to disable or not use these features, in which case Google will not receive this data.
* Certain of our products and services allow you to personalize the content you receive from us. For these products and services, we will store your preferences and the information you provide for customization. These preferences may be associated with your Google Account or elsewhere with Google, as explained in the Privacy Policies for those products.
Yes in settings and during setup it asks you if you want info to be sent...However you should know that microsofts has the win update which sends info about your pc. You shouldnt be concerned though...Contacts/emails/calender is sent/stored on servers.

researching something else, came across this - samsung just released "samsung Dive" in Germany & UK - an app that lets you wipe or lock your phone remotely if lost or stolen
http://www.slipperybrick.com/2010/07/samsung-dive-remotely-locks-wipes-your-wave-galaxy-s-for-free/
I just signed up for it and tried it. Annoying that they're not enabling the tracking service depending on the country, wavesecure does that and more... If there a way to work around it by a proxy or such?
how do you sign up on the galaxy s? i cant seem to find what its asking for, and there is nothing in the user guide about the galaxy s

you need to sign up via the application within the phones app
where is that exactly? i cant seem to find it, thanks in advance!
From homescreen, go into settings -> location & security -> set mobile tracker
Have fun
You need a Samsung account first. In settings go to the area where it allows you to add various accounts like facebook/gmail and add a samsung account... then go to http://www.samsungdive.com/index.do
then enable mobile tracking ...
login with the account you made etc
full instructions are on that website ...
Thats the problem, in the account settings there is no samsung option, just google, facebook, myspace, twitter and corporate. and the instructions on the website are for the S8500 Wave, not the Galaxy S. enabling mobile tracker in security doesnt work, as again, there is no option to create an account, so even if it is set up, you cant access it from the website.
Since its not available in the US yet.
SIM Checker
Remote Wipe
Where's My Droid
3 apps will do.
annoyingly, i'm in the uk so it is available where i am, just i cant access it
Anyone managed to sign into the website yet. I can't find any option to create an account on my phone

i figured it out.
in contrast to the website, in order to create your samsung account, you have to enable mobile tracker first. then after setting it up do you get the option to make your samsung account, which is the opposite of the information on the website, saying that you need to make the account first and then enable mobile tracker. hope this helps anyone who was stuck
Brilliant, thanks
I'm trying to sign up for an account now, and it's coming back with an error message, saying "invalid birthday" .... which is odd - I'm fairly sure my birthday is NOT invalid - I am fairly sure I have in fact been born!

Had the same error. Just ignored it and signed up without entering a birthday. When I logged in, my birthday was correctly registered :/

When we know Samsung's skills to implement working and bug free software, do you dare to install that piece of software that can wipe off your phone I'm not sure, if I dare.
The service don't seem to work though. Tried sending a remote lock command, and it said it was successful, but I can still use the phone without providing the lock code.
Might be dependant on TwLauncher though. I use LauncherPro
it says it's only for UK and Germany

Is anyone having any luck signing up with the Web Tracker?
I've got a Galaxy S on Froyo, and it won't let me sign up. I fill in all the fields fine, but then get this error: "Unable to sign up. Processing failed IDM_1105"
Any ideas?
All signed up and seems to be working. Sent a location request and waiting for reply now. The register being hidden under the on screen keyboard did have me stumped for a while. Also date of birth is YYYY DD MM so not easy to get right without an example.
Hello. I've tried to create ad-driven app, I've succeeded to do so, and to test if ad is working I clicked on it a couple of times.
And then after like 10 minutes I've got e-mail from Google that they suspended my account. Can these two events be related?

Sounds likely. Which account got suspended, your Google Dev, your AdMob, or both?
Also think about if there is anything else that may have got you banned, things like a false/incorrect address, etc.
Get in contact with Google/AdMob, be really apologetic, they might un-ban you.

No, only Google Dev account. My AdMob account is functional. Where can I speak to a living being there and not to auto-response e-mail robot? Because it looks like I always talk to one of them.
Well, they want you to register your phone as a development device which won't generate income for you.
However, your AdMob account should be banned, not the Google Play one.
Publishers may not click their own ads or use any means to inflate impressions and/or clicks artificially, including manual methods. Google treats invalid click activity very seriously, analyzing all clicks and impressions to determine whether they fit a pattern of use that might artificially drive up an advertiser's costs or a publisher's earnings. If we determine that an AdMob account might pose a risk to our advertisers, we may disable that account to protect our advertisers' interests.

Friends ex girlfriend is remotely accessing his phone from her computer, she can lock him out and write text out of format on the lock screen. She has deleted everything on his phone 8 times in the past hour. The Verizon recovery app has been disabled, we went into the Verizon store and changed EVERYTHING, number, passwords, made sure if she ever called in wanting info she couldn't get it. There is no way she figured out any of the passwords, she doesn't have access to any of his accounts, gmails facebook etc... i thought for sure she was using the recovery app but that's impossible cause no account has been created to access to his phone. Idk guys like i said im not an expert one thing that has me most skeptical she can write whatever she wants, whatever color, on his phone on any spot on the screen. Its completely out of set text formations on the lock screen looks like doodles i guess. Just curious if you guys have have ever heard of anything like this happening before. Thanks and i apologize if this shouldn't be here just on a desperate attempt to figure this out. Verizon is completely stumped they have no idea how she does it, even the main tech guy at the store (idk his credentials) cant figure it out.
From what I've seen so far, Android Device Manager (part of Google's setup) can do remote wipes. as can Motorola ID. I imagine both of these may "automatically setup" when you re-activate the phone. Beyond that, you'd need an app to perform such changes, I'd think.
Also, if he's on a joint-account with his exGF, and if she has access to the account, VZ may be doing this without the store-people knowing it?

If it's Android Device Manager, maybe it would be sufficient to just change the Google login password?
Yeah, he changed his Google password right?

He was on a joint account but upon breakin up with her he took her phone, cancelled it, removed her from the account changed his passwords to facebook and google and everything else. Just for the guy to call in and request info he has to answer 5+ extra security questions before hes allowed any info. But ill check out the ADV maybe thats it. Thankyou
Hello,
With my former employer I had a phone that I used my Samsung account with, problem is that Samsung account is registered with the work phone number I had at the time, so I can no longer login to my account because of 2 factor authentification being enforced onto my account (without my consent).
To regain access to my Samsung account I need to have the phone's Serial Number, how can I get it? I don't have anything left from the phone, but I used it regularly with Google Account, Windows, "Your Phone" app, etc....
Can I get it through Windows registry, logs or some online webservice?
Regards,
Where it was bought... especially if it's was a carrier phone.
It was bought by the company which I no longer have contact with.
That's not data normally shared. I'm not a fan of most multitiered security as it always causes me problems.
Doesn't it show you a serial number in the phone information?
Otherwise try this app once. The serial number is also displayed under the Personal tab...

I was gonna suggest yesterday that she bites the bullet and just rings her old employers and explains she's spent lots of money thru the account.
they'd probably say the phone has been scrapped by now, in that case back to Samsung and look for a contact us link.
she can't be the first person to face this scenario since they brought in 2FA. if she still has an email account attached that's something.
