Question Mi 11 Ultra TWRP 3.5.1 is not decrypting properly - Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra

I have been having issues with TWRP 3.5.1 for the Mi 11 Ultra not decrpting data properly when I get an OTA from Xiaomi.eu. Does anyone know of another recovery available for this device?

Sadly no, however there is a workaround:
On the screen where you can enter the PIN, what I do is enterering the PIN to decrypt once and then press the left button to proceed despite the red error message.
You can then find your internal memory in TWRP under /data/media/0

Yes, but it still is encrypted, Will the data be updated properly when you flash an OTA copied to that directory?

Interesting, just checked - it seems as if my ROM (latest Xiaomi.EU Weekly) indeed hasn't encrypted the internal storage, I can access it even without entering any PIN ....
My apologies if my info has been a dud

If I don't enter any info, such as FP, Face or pattern, then it works but if I do that info is somehow corrupted and in TWRP and my data remains encrypted. My question would be, if you flash a weekly OTA in your media/0 folder, would it update to newest version of OTA, despite the data being encrypted or would you need to format and start a fresh with all previous data being erased?

I have been dealing with the same issue for so quite a long time now

I've read on the miui eu site that its a bug with the Chinese twrp and we need an updated/patched twrp for this to be fixed not sure when is that twrp be release, I got this problem as well and the only workaround is put your rom on root/data/0 for you to be able to flash .zip rom via pc then mount

I've tried twrp R2.3.2.1 and R2.3.2.5, it says wrong password... I use the pin code of the ROM...
What can I do?

Your data from the last install appears to be encrypted. If you have a backup the easiest way to resolve the issue is to format your storage. You could also use the All in One tool and use its encryption removal option. Please keep in mind that it will wipe out all of your memes, so hopefully those are backed up.

I mean, i formatted to have a custom ROM booting, encrypting my data. I can use the phone, my pin code works in android but it's impossible to decrypt with TWRP...
Édit : found that message from argraur on telegram, so basically we have to wait for an updated twrp ? "Android release 9.0.0_r36 (r37) with May security patch has updated FBE encryption that breaks decryption in TWRP."

That doesn't even make sense. Twrp will not decrypt your phone.
Install Miui again, backup your data, to your desktop, by manually dragging your files over.
Go here and download DM-VERITY, FORCED ENCRYPTION, AND DISC QUOTA DISABLER you will use it to flash between updates or for dirty flashing Miui updates.
Next go back to TWRP the choose format and type yes reboot to TWRP ( you will se a message that says you have no OS are you sure?) Yes, reboot to TWRP
TWRP is not your issue, go read
and read the first comment here
Format storage, or wait for the TWRP and you still need to the format storage, Again a TWRP update will not resolve the issue. We have all had this exact issue.
I'm using another workaround:
With the all in one tool, we can flash .zip from a PC.
So I could install a custom kernel file from my pc directly into phone without loosing data.
Annoying thing is that I need the PC... Can't flash files that are in phone memory... Not such a big issue...
Another question, can I make a backup from the PC? Used to do it via twrp, but it is not safe with that issue...

How to remove encryption in OrangeFox?

Everytime I boot into recovery it asks for my pin lock code. Entering my pin everytime into the recovery is mildly irritating. Anyway to remove this?
Do I have format data everytime I flash a new rom? It is a pain to backup my data everytime to a PC when flashing a new rom.

You don't need to format data unless you want to remove encryption, but it's advisable to at least wipe data.
When wiping data TWRP will leave the external storage intact (even though external storage is stored in the data partition). So app and ROM data is lost, but personal data is kept.
When you format data, then personal data in external storage is lost too.

Are you on official MIUI?
If you're on a custom ROM, then after formatting data you should remain unencrypted without needing to do anything else.

Sorry, I'm forgetting that is now standard to encrypt the phone automatically when setting a PIN for unlocking. Try the script linked in the bottom of this post to disable encryption permanently.

If I used pattern unlock instead of pin it wouldn't have encrypted the rom?
In the linked thread it says to format data and then flash the file. Suppose I want to install a new rom.
The current process for this phone is:
1. Flash MIUI Chinese rom.
2. Wipe everything except vendor and internal storage.
3. Flash rom of choice and gapps.
4. Format data.
5. Boot the device.
At which step should I flash that file? Flashing the decryption file is after formatting data (step 4), right?
What if I already am on a custom rom? Flashing the file would decrypt the rom or not?
Sorry for asking so many questions. The previous device I had was Redmi Note 4 (mido) so it wasn't necessary to do all these things.

My previous phone was a OnePlus 3, and so this was never an issue with that. After that phone had a fatal accident I had a Redmi 6a for 3 months while I waited for a an all screen with SD855 to be released. All I did with that was install TWRP and Magisk. So I've never actually tried to permanently remove encryption, so don't take what I'm saying as definite.
Not all ROMs require you to format data. I'm on the AOSiP ROM and it wasn't required. I'll move to the Havoc ROM soon, and again it's not required to format data.
My understanding is that you will have an unencrypted phone, even after setting a pin, after flashing that script, so I assume that it would be unnecessary to format data where a ROM install instruction tells you to. This is usually done to ensure the data partition is unencrypted before flashing.
I think setting a pattern also encrypts the phone. I have seen a guide on how to replicate the pattern using the keyboard in TWRP, but can't find it again now.

I'm running resurrection remix Android 10 on OnePlus 7t pro, formatted data still data partition is encrypted. Recovery: OrangeFox

TWRP can't decrypt phone (Pie)

I recently formatted my G6, downloaded Pie from the motorola assistant, flashed everything and installed TWRP 3.3.1-0.
TWRP boots up fine, im able to flash anything (like magisk) but it refuses to decrypt the phone. It shows a screen to input a password or a pattern (depending on what i've configured) but no matter what I tried it just fails to decrypt with the "Decrypt took too long, killing process". So far I've tried
* Pattern
* Password
* Swipe
* All the previous combinations with "boot time pattern/password requirement" enabled/disabled.
I'd like to keep the phone encrypted and still use TWRP, so my question is, has someone managed to use TWRP with the G6? If its not possible, I'd like to disable it, although i've found no tutorials about it.
Thanks!
I fixed it by using the 64 bits version of twrp i think. You can try it i guess?

Don't you need to wipe all the data anyway for the new rom?
Personally, I'd hit cancel, and wipe data entirely, which will obviously erase everything from any apps.

That's correct, but in my case I'm running EliteROM wich is decrypted by default, if I want to backup my system with TWRP-3.6.2 the super partition shows "zero MB" even without any lockscreen option... not like in OFox where it shows the real partition size... For AOSP rom or Custom Miui roms, first installation requires to format data not just wipe.
Again remove lock screen security and with the TWRP:
If the TWRP ask to "enter password for the user" just select cancel.
Wipe/format data type yes reboot TWRP.(if errors red lines restart the procedure).
rebooting to the TWRP on each try.
