What is it?VaporUX (user experience) will be a set of open source apps for Android. The plan is for it to use an flashable zip file the way you would install GApps. This means we won't have to worry about building an entire ROM, just the apps and services required for any device. The goal is to have a lightweight, fast set of apps, completely free of bloat. However, I don't want to sacrifice features and customization options just to be lightweight. I'm not sure exactly what specific app features there will be, but here are the basics for the project as a whole.
Spoiler: Features
F-Droid app store. It's a relatively complete app store and everything is open source, which makes it fit in with the rest of the VaporUX apps.
A simple themes system for all VaporUX apps and any other apps that support it.
Open source Chromium based browser.
Media player and YouTube client with support for casting to TV.
Possibly an app for syncing the device with a PC (Windows and Linux).
If you're interested in helping, let me know.

A new version of the Mozilla Firefox browser for Android has been released, under the company’s “Fennec” codename. As well as browsing, Mozilla have also whipped up a version of Weave to synchronize bookmarks, history, passwords and tabs between the desktop and mobile versions.
There are a couple of issues to bear in mind – this is an pre-alpha release, after all – with the biggest limitation being that the browser currently requires Android 2.0 or above. You’ll also probably need to have an OpenGL ES 2.0 capable device, you can’t open links from other apps in Fennec as yet, and there are bugs that will chomp through your available memory and likely end up forcing you to reboot the phone altogether.
Still, if you want to give it a try then head into your Android phone’s settings, check the option that allows you to install non-Android Market apps, and then head here for the package. Initial feedback seems to be that the UI needs some work, especially when trying to scroll without triggering the browser’s controls.

ps if you want to install it just check out the link to the story
Hey guys,
I'm in the very very early stages of my masters work and I was toying around with the idea of using an Android tablet for part of it. I want to ask you devs what can be done when modifying the Android OS itself specifically in terms of a few things.
1. Logins - I would like to implement a classic user/password combination with levels of access for user, administrator, and some sort of superuser.
2. Restriction of User account - I would like to lock the user into one particular application. It must be relaunched when the device is booted and if the application crashes (hopefully not!) it must be restarted. Additionally, no market access, web access, etc.
3. Remote management if possible
4. Data encryption if possible
5. Prevent anything from being introduced from USB ports, SD slot, etc if unwanted.
I guess this brings me around to - is Android even the most suitable platform for such an endeavor. I'm not sure, to be honest, but I would love to get into development myself and this seems like a great way to learn. This is all just one part of a much larger project that I don't want to discuss just yet so sorry for being lax on details.
Thanks guys!
Android runs a virtual machine system called dalvik, in which each application gets it's own insuranceof the machine. It's implemented in such a way that each application gets assigned a user id, which unfortunately for you means each app is a different user, at least to the system. That's going to be a major wrench in the multi user plans. taking that into consideration, to have the same level of control over your tablet you'd have to give even the most basic user level "root" access or else the apps will start crapping their collective pants. As far as unwanted usb, there are a few apps that implement this functionality freely available through the market. Same with remote management. What I haven't seen yet is total encryption and I don't know enough about it to say it's possible or not. Seems feasible though.
My advice: write a custom login screen widget and then bake all these features into a pretty rom.
News from : yourstory.in/2013/08/uc-browser-unveils-open-add-on-platform-for-android/
UCWeb, a leading provider of mobile internet software and services, has just launched the 9.2 version of UC Browser for Android, unveiling an open add-on platform to achieve an advanced personalized browsing experience. With the announcement the company plans to draw upon its user base of 400 million users and work with app developers to develop this open add-on platform
With this 9.2 version, UC Browser provides an open add-on platform that allows users to customize the functions of their browsers. Add-ons can be added or removed as you please. The first group of individual add-ons can be seen on the panel. Four of them have been made especially to meet the needs of a large amount of users. Their features are as follow:
Facebook photo uploader: This add-on shares your photos to Facebook much more easily, and allows you to upload multiple photos at once. An added benefit to this add-on is that it can turn on the function of Facebook push notifications, so you don’t miss any message from your friends.
Save web pages as PDF: To cater to a growing need for saving high quality mobile web pages, UC Browser has created an add-on that allows you to save webpages as PDF files to better preserve their content and allow for easier file transferring. These files can be quickly accessed through the browser’s Download Management system.
File Unzip: Helps you open RAR or ZIP files on your phone. They can be extracted with the ‘Unzip’ add-on.
Webpage Translator: Taking advantage of the Google Translate and Bing system, this add-on supports more than 70 languages, allowing you to break through almost all the language barriers you need! This add-on supports both whole page translation and individual word translation.
News for developers: The add-on platform is expected to be officially open to third party developers soon. This opening aims to encourage more third party developers to create a wide array of customized feature add-ons for UC Browser. With a user base of over 400 million users, the add-on platform offers the opportunity for each of these users to enjoy a more personalized mobile browsing experience catering to each of their specific needs.
The add-on platform enables a bi-direction communication between UC Browser and the Android system’s services. In this environment, data sharing is much easier, and the UC Browser API has been standardized, making it more accessible to third party developers via SDK. Programs created by developers can be used in all operating scenarios of UC Browser.
The platform was developed on the basis of feedback of users, and research on users’s favorites. For example, they did a survey to capture users’ favorite behaviors on mobile browser includes SNS and news reading, and that was the insight behind releasing the Facebook Photo Uploader and Webpage Translator. The spokesperson for UC Browser says they get much feedback everyday from Facebook, customer service systems and email. There are periodic surveys also done to know more about users’ favorites from time to time. The browser is currently free and they do not have any plans to charge for the service.
So I've got my app up and running but would like to know if anyone has any insight on setting up a download manager inside of my app?
I'm assuming that you're planning to just download files, with your own UI, instead of implementing your own download manager that handles the raw connections.
You could use Android's built in download manager. Google's Developer page contains the documentation for it. It's good and has great pause and resume support, along with the ability to decide by itself when to queue download requests and when to download concurrently. However, it's very flexible, and thus needs a lot of boilerplate code.
If your requirements are simple, you could try a library like Medescope. It's easy to implement, and also creates notifications by itself, so that's one less thing to worry about. Medescope uses Android's Download Manager internally.
Hello.
I wanted to create a thread for apps that I personally use and find useful. I will update the main post with other recommendations if they are well known and safe to use with our device.
I may change the layout of this post in the future to help organize it when we get alot of apps. but for now i'll do what i can with the apps that I personally use.
The apps listed are in no particular order of preference. they're just typed as I see them on my phone. I may setup a top 10 in this post eventually when more people comment on the apps they use. (most of the links are google play store of canada. if they do not work for you, try searching in your own country.)

Waze - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.waze&hl=en_CA
Some small info on the apps.
Media monkey - should be self explanatory its quite possibly the best music app on android, ans windows for that matter.
MMremote - is a client side app to control the windows version of media monkey with your phone.
VLC - its the best full featured and supported video player on Android.
youtube vanced - just a different version of youtube with more features and options.
Amaze file manager - my favorite manager it due to its side by side dual screen, makes copy and pasting to different locations very easy.
Terminal emulator - for when your PC is out of reach
Greenify - may not be needed on this phone, but its still an excellent app manager to keep any battery hungry background apps sleeping when you turn off the screen
Wifi analyzer - I've been using this same app for over 10 years. its excellent to see and check the quality of the wifi channels around you. and troubleshooting connection issues
Night mode - for those with sensitive eyes, I use this to turn the brightness down even more than the stock level. (just dont forget to turn if off before going out in the sun)
Cool tool - this is to show all sorts of information. I use it to show the temperature of the CPU and GPU on the nav bar
DNS66 - this tool saves my sanity. I hate adverts with a passion. its gotten from a alternate app store. best non root adblocker imo.
Gazbuddy - is a community aided app, it shows and records all the prices of Gas / petrol in the US and Canada. at each station. its great for finding cheaper gaz than your local station.
Waze - this is a google maps alternative. it needs data to run, it shows more real time stuff than google, and updates road closures quicker than google. this is also a community added app.
Thank you for dropping by. I hope some of these apps help others. None of these apps are mine. I am only sharing my experiences and personal opinion of good apps for most android phones. if anyone does have trouble with any app that i've posted, its still best to report it to the developer through Google play store. but if you do have an issue that i can help with I will.
Is there something specific I have to do to get DNS66 working or did it break in the past two months?
Also why can't I install Youtube Vanced without MicroG? I don't need to login to my account.

not sure about youtube vanced, I took the installer form the XDA page.
but with DNS66 its been working fine for me. it may need a restart.
some of the host files don't update all the time, i turn off HP'shosts as Stevens hosts has all of HPs,
but i'd recommend just manually turning off the server, running an update for the host files then manually turning it back on.
sometimes the VPN breaks when moving to and from wifi, I've not experienced it on the RM5 but I have had it happen on other devices.
