hi i'm not an expert excuse me if the question seems silly:
i own a google nexus one. i've seen a lot of kernels around and i was wondering what is their purpose. besides i wanted to know if the roms (cyano, stock deodexed rom and so on...) come with their own kernel or if it has to be installed separately. in this case how do i know which my stock kernel was?
Think of Kernels as mini ROMs, they are addons that you can install to the System Partition. Common addons are Undervolting (less power consumption), overclocking, and enabling 720p video recording. So yeah, they're like ROM addons. Some even speed up the phone and fix lag and coloration issues, but thats mainly for the Galaxy S line.
an example is the battery driver edits we did to the nexus one. if you want to change how the phone works with the hardware, changes had to be made to the driver, and re-compiled, then install that kernel to the phone.
so all the devs have all sorts of ideas and things they want to change to drivers and cpu voltages and whatnot to get better performance and stuff. so each kernel has different edits like that battery one. and people like to try out different ones to see which works the best. that's the idea.
ok tnz a lot for the explanation
Hi!
I guess many people like me were experiencing WiFi leaks problems: wifi turned off, scanning etc in settings were denied, but still in power management Android indicated wifi being Active. Getting root and trying many firmwares with the same problem I finally found out what a hell was that. Reason for such bug are two Samsung's packages: QuickConnect and BeaconManager. Deleting them wifi leaks stops(no more unauthorised wifi switching on and draining battery).
So anyone who wanna wix it, delete or deactivate(if without root it's possible) packages named above.
Hope will be usefull for someone else, except me. I wasted over 3 month to find out what a hell was happening to the phone. It's only about SM-N910C model. Other model - I don't know, if the same issue, try the same steps, maybe will also help.
Defect's screenshot attached. Check it out. If you have the same trouble, now you know how to fix it. Quite possible that you can disable those apks without root too.
Added also screenshot(in Russian, but you'll easily find that apps by icon) with apps you need to disable to extend battery life and disable wifi leaks(battery drain).
Hi, I'm on stock Lollipop and I can only Force Detention (sorry, I'm on a spanish ROM) but no delete or deactivate. Will this get rid of these forever or I need to root and uninstall?
Thanks,

You should be able to deactivate that packs using Setting=>Applications(3-rd from the bottom of menu)=>All. There you'll find these apps and by idea you can switch them off. If it doesn't allow you to turn it of, then yes, only with root. As for me I use SweetROM(custom rom) and special app that completely deletes system apps. If you fail to deactivate them using Samsung's app menu, then you need root and and get from PlayMarket this app - "Root App Deleter" to delete these apks. After that, wifi stops switching itself on and wasting battery without your permission. But remember, that rooting device will void device's warranty. So if you don't care about warranty - best option is to get root and use named app for deleting this packages.
Thanks, planning on downgrading now. Too much hassle with Lollipop

You're welcome. If you care about warranty, then yes, downgrading to kitkat is the best option I guess. But if warranty is not valuable for you, you can root device, install SweetROM (search for it in Galaxy Note Exynos general forum) and delete named packages. As a result, you'll get amazing performance and battery lifetime(even better, then KitKat's one). So just a matter of choice

Yeah, I was considering a custom also, but I'm an audio junkie (that's why I've got the Exynos variant - Wolfson DAC) and am planning on installing V4A with full support. Not enough in Lollipop with using it as a preset in certain apps.
Thanks again!

What V4A is? Maybe it's also portable to 5.0.1 android
I'm on lollipop BOE3 and have V4A fully running with no problem. You need a custom kernel with SELinux set to permissive though. You can try any custom rom in the forums. Almost all have custom kernels.

It's Viper4Android, a low-level audio driver (well, sorta) which enhances greatly your device sound quality

I do confirm, that it's nicely working on SweetROM V14 (BOE firmware). If you fail to install it over that custom ROM, I'll gladly assist you Sound is amazing and removing named packeges above no wifi leaks, so system is working brilliantly Only stock Samsung's player doesn't support V4A. Screenshots attached. Used also custom kernel with GUI for it's config. You can see kernel name on last sreenshot, it's also taken from XDA. So all components you'll get easily from XDA. A bit of time to spend on system configuration and everything will be brilliant with the latest firmware available. You actually have no reasons to fall back to kitkat.
ATTENTION!!! Just noticed, in case you use V4A as primary audio system, you should also terminate SoundAlive (Samsung's mixer) to avoid sound distortion and dual mixing and to get a more clear sound.
Heh, only problem now... That I used Samsung's stock player and it's not supported by V4A. Any recommendations for nice free audio player, that is not less good then original Samsung's one?
NEVER mind... If SoundAlive package deleted, V4A working nice with stock Samsung's player Cool Reason why stock player didn't work(and developers say it's not supported, is that Samsung's orinal player has own sound effects - SoundAlive. And if SoundAlive is deleted, then V4A works with stock player nicely too
Once you disable SoundAlive V4A works fine. Only glitch i noticed so far is that I have to start V4A to get it enabled in stock music player. If I start playing a song sound quality is regular and then i start V4A and notice the difference in audio quality. Like no autostart for V4A.
Did you enable V4A icon in statusbar? If not - that the reason you have to start it manually
Ahhh and also check out that stock player has AdaptSound disabled, cauze it's incompatible with V4A. And since you use V4A - AdaptSound can also be deleted to avoid conflicts.

Hi everyone,
Am currently on EMUI 9 (.241) I have been through the threads of custom roms in this forum but I see that almost all of them need some specific version of EMUI 9 as base before one can flash those roms. I was wondering the following:
1> If any rom would work directly for me on my current EMUI 9 version.
2> How are the roms compared to EMUI when it comes to battery life, native camera app & stability mostly. I do not care much about NFC or dual speakers.
Emui is more optimised for the cpu than custom roms.
Hi
My experience between stocks, and custom (CypherOS, and Lineage)
Performance
You can check the benchmarks. with performance mood, stock
Is better, normal mood AOSCP is better
Battery
(Stock is better)
Have no screenshots, but for my case it's significantly better in stocks.
Hardware Compatibility:
(Stock wins)
I switched saying the same -i don't need USB headphones, dual speaker or NFC-
But for me I realized u only miss what u don't have. Sound quality is inferior and NFC is not compatible with extended bytes (I use it for official NFC cards)
One more thing, cameras API was exported and one thing that is not working is RAW pictures.
My verdict
As long we don't have a open source Huawei kernel and drivers I would stick with Huawei.
What I did though is
CPL lunchers
Root/Magisk passes safety net
Deleted/disabled Huawei bloatware background services.
Hope this is informative.
Thanks, much appreciated. Am currently rooted on EMUI 9 with just the right amount of customization. Was wondering if custom roms would give better performance and battery life and if it's worth the effort to install one. Your reply makes sense.
I got my Redmi Note 10 Pro a couple of weeks ago and I'm really liking it except for some issues. MIUI feels really bloated and sluggish even after using the adb tools to remove most of the pre-installed garbage. Battery life has been really disappointing even after going to 60hz and using low brightness. You also can't use a third party launcher with the full screen gestures and i hate the default launcher. I've been thinking about installing Pixel Experience as I've seen other people having better battery life and performance than on MIUI. It's also stock android so that's a cherry on top, but i don't know what sort of issues it might come with. First of all I don't know if all of my apps will work. I'm also scared that I might brick my phone and I'm not gonna be able to go back to MIUI if there are any issues. Also I might not get regular or quality updates and I don't trust the small team that works on the pixel experience rom more than Xiaomi. Can someone tell me if any of these issues exist and if it's worth it to use a custom rom? Thanks.
it is, I've been using debloated miui11 and 12 on tulip for over 2 years, it is much, much better than original miui. My wife has been using custom aicp on rn4x, and again, experience was much better, than on stock.
Apps will work in 99% cases, if not, there are tutorials how to install them. Stuff that you have to look over the most are banking apps, nfc apps and rn10p miui stock cam (which is actually better, than gcam mods now).
RN10p does not have anti rollback protection, it is generally easier to flash than smartphones based on mediatek cpus, so you must done some physical damage to actually broke this phone.
About OTA's - there are options to install ota updates on custom recovieries like skyhawk recovery project or others to twrp (this recovery does not have that option, as far as I know). If that fails, you can always install new version on top of the old.
Ok thanks a lot! Are there any suggestions you can give me on what rom i should use on the rn10p and can you give me any tips about installing and using custom roms? I'm new to this.
I've just started and installed pixel experience (normal, without plus, not sure, what is the difference between it, since even the size is the same). Firstly, you have to unlock your bootloader in order to proceed. Then make sure you've installed usb drivers for this phone (without it, you cannot unlock bootloader, for example, because miunlock does not see your phone).
About a rom - the cleaner the android, the better (mostly). If you aren't super tied to some special miui-only options (most noticeable being xiaomi account and preinstalled mi forum), then you are free to go. Phone is capable of running even fully packed android 11, so picking the lightest rom without gapps to save space doesn't have much sense these days (it had like 7 years ago, when internal storage was always a shortage). Most cool stuff are call recorder (blocked in official miui and in most european countries), small tweaks with gestures and buttons (most roms have it), tweaks like "long press menu button to torch" etc. You'll have to look for yourself later then, but for now just follow guide to install and read topics before instalation - in most cases if something goes wrong, you should be able to pick that from somebody's story. Also remember about backups of internal storage, music, photos, app installers etc, because all of it is gone with almost every operation.
Generally from MIUI there's one thing that You must take with you - camera app. So far stock is best. There are tutorials in pixel experience thread on how to install it. Also, I highly recommend root - you can make it only after unlocking bootloader, but being able to access deeper areas of system, uninstall unwanted stuff, get rid of ads etc is worth the try, especially if nowadays magisk instalation is really simple. For more advanced users, you could try to install edxposed manager to customize phone even more.

Thanks a ton for your help! I'll install pixel experience and try it out tomorrow. I'll root it and install the stock camera. Wish me luck.

Why would it be a joke? Not everyone is master of rom swapping and adb commands freshly out of the box. It is already much higher level than at least some people, who called their phones by Wrong models or keep asking for help, because they screwed their phones badly. Normal questions, if you ask me.

Exactly, Thanks!
My buddy got a new note 9 and needs help getting it back to as basic, stripped down as possible.
He's used to AOSP ROM's on other phones where there are no bells & whistles.
Just Internet and camera and like five other apps.
So, debloating, removing all the crap from status bar and pull-down menu.
I see there are no reliable AOSP ROM's available, so we need to do all this with the stock ROM.
I can root it and get rid of system apps, but I'm not sure what all can safely be removed.
And it's not my phone, so I can't use it and fix it as I go.
I need to do the work and then hand over the phone to him.
Also, does xposed GravityBox work well on the latest stock Android 10 firmware for this phone?
I figure that might get him a few mods he needs for an AOSP feel.
