Xperia Z Ultra as AA Head Unit - Android Auto General

Hi all, I am wanting to mount my old phone (Xperia Z Ultra) as an AA unit in my car alongside my cars traditional head unit. I could do with some tips and advice. This is how I intend to use it:
1. Mount my old phone
2. OTG cable from old phone - one into USB charging port on cars existing head unit - the other as a USB input from my new phone.
3. Audio cable from old phone to head unit (or audio via bluetooth from old phone to existing head unit?).
4. Old phone boots straight into AA when powered by usb from headunit.
Is this possible? How can I do it? Is there anything I could do better? Thanks all.

If you hands-free car kit supports bluetooth then you won't need any adapter to use your Kaiser.
nope.
its an old fashioned car kit where you stick your mobile in.

I doubt you will find any adapter for Kaiser.
Here's what I did for my "car kit" since my car doesn't have bluetooth nor a cassette player...
1. Generic Wal-Mart phone holder -- it has padding and clips onto the dash air vents ~ $9.00
2. 3-in-1 usb device for Motorola/HTC devices ~ $14.00 shipped
3. HTC 2-in-1 mic/speaker extension cable ~ $5.00 shipped
4. iTunes digital FM Transmitter w/ 3.5mm speaker cable ~ $40.00
5. Motorola/HTC car dc adapter ~ dunno, came w/ my Tilt
6. 2-way lighter spitter ~ $10.00 shipped
It's a lot, all-in-all lol. What I did was this:
1. mount phone holder onto the dash
2. plug 3-in-1 usb into the phone
3. plug dc adapter into one of the 2 lighter ports and into the left usb port
4. plug fm transmitter into other lighter port
5. plug fm transmitter's 3.5mm into the end of the 2-in-1
6. plug 2-in-1 into the right usb port
it should be good to go. I prefer the digital FM transmitter only because it has no frequency limitation.
If the car stereo had a cassette player, I'd just get a cheap 3.5mm to cassette adapter.

which car kit? The nokia specific car kit? Go out and buy a bluetooth car kit, then you don't have to worry about connecting any wires. Or you can upgrade your stereo to one with bluetooth built in, this is what I have in my STi http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/PION...022QQitemZ350039047357QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW works great. Decent stereo, and great bluetooth integration, except I have problems syncing my contact list on my tilt. It used to work fine with my 8125, but when I try to sync with the tilt bluetooth resets on the tilt. You can get a refurbed one for $200 Here's a new one for $200 http://cgi.ebay.com/PIONEER-DEH-P79...ryZ39752QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem the major only difference between the 7900 and the 790 is the 790 has the ipod integration cable included

[Q] iPod emulation

Is there an app that will emulate and iPod when I plug the usb cable into it?
The reason I ask is I have a pioneer head unit in my car and would love to be able to control music from the head unit and not have to fiddle with my phone. The head unit can also handle usb drives, but I don't think it likes having 2 drives mounted at the same time, so that doesn't work either.

Mate 10 Pro connection to Kenwood DNX525/DNX516

Hello,
I have never been a chinese devices fan nor I will be. However, I've got my hands on the Mate 10 Pro a week ago and I'm using it and testing. I have to say it's not the best phone out, but has a lot of potential.
I thought it might be interesting and useful to give others some guide about connecting the Mate 10 Pro to a car head unit from Kenwood (2 versions I have already tested - DNX 525 and DNX 516). I've smashed my head to the walls looking and reading for a proper solution to connect it to the radio car unit and I couldn't find anything. Main reason is because both Kenwoods are using a HDMI <-> Micro-usb cable and that's ONLY for older devices (until USB-C came on the market). So, basically, if you're trying to get an adapter USB-C to Micro-usb WILL NOT WORK! You have to use the above cable hdmi to usb-c!
1. Look for a HDMI splitter - 1 x father and 2 x mother so you can connect 2 devices at the same time (just like the one here: http://www.vivanco.com/Homepage/Products/Audio-Video-Antenna-Cable/Video/HDMI-Adapter/vivanco-42144-hdmi-splitter-1-2-black-0-5m.html?id=nsession;
2. Open the radio car unit and disassemble the original HDMI <-> Micro-usb and connect the above splitter;
3. Connect BOTH HMDI cables (the original one and the second one);
4. You'll have to find a solution to get both cables to the front of the IP so you can connect car head unit to the mobile phone (instrument panel - either on the gloves compartment or by making a hole to the small compartment beneath the air condition climatic control - this is actually very easy);
5. Assemble everything back and start the unit;
6. Connect the USB-C to the Mate 10 Pro (or any other mobile phone with USB-C connector) and voila! You'll have the complete screen on the radio car unit.
You also need to install onto your phone the Android app from Kenwood (that will open the MHL/HDMI).
What you can't do on the DNX525:
1. you can't control the phone through the radio unit - you have to use the phone to control it!
Let's say you have a Note4 and a Huawei Mate 10 Pro - YOU CAN NOT use both of them at the same time! Only one!
Everything is related to VW Golf (5, 6, Plus).
Apologies, I had no time for taking pictures .

Audio out via the USB in car?

Hi
I've received my P20 Pro this week and am loving the phone so far. However, one big issue remains that i can't seem to get my head around - how to play audio from the phone through my non-Bluetooth car stereo?
I previously had an iPhone 6 where this was easy; plug the phone in to the stereo via USB and it would simultaneously charge and play music from the phone through the car stereo.
But when I plug in the P20 Pro via the same USB port, I can't seem to get audio coming out. I know it's possible - as obviously headphones plug in to the same USB-c port - so is there something I have to turn on or toggle to get it to send audio out?
Any help much appreciated. Thanks.

Check you don't have this option enabled in developer options?

Thanks - I looked and it's not checked. In fact, the headphones work when you plug them in, so it is allowing audio out with certain connections.
It's just when I use the charging lead to connect the phone to the car stereo (USB) - nothing happens. It doesn't even charge, and says "check USB" on the front of the stereo. if I play music when it's connected, it just comes out the phone - which obviously it wouldn't do if it was connected to the stereo.
Do I need a specific audio lead, rather than just the basic charging one that comes with it?
Coming from an iPhone background, it's just the same lead... so I'm struggling to see why this won't work either.
My case was huawei p20 pro generate so much noise and jitter during playing through USB audio connect to Helix dsp, it solved by changing USB speed mode from full speed mode to high speed mode on the Helix dsp USB setting. As my iPhone was working fine on both mode. In case if you can try to change setting on your car stereo system. Try to consult with your car stereo manufacturer.
Hi Slangking, did you already find a solution to use P20 (pro) audio over USB in your car? I'm having the same issue as you, went from the iPhone 6 to p20. Just a cheap USB stick works, and I could even remote spotify on my iPhone with my steer trough USB. Changing the USB output in the developer settings to audio source didn't work

I did some research and mounting your memory card as a USB Mass Storage will work like explained over here, but I still can't find out how this will work for the internal storage...
UPDATE
I found something called WIRELINQ: Smart Android USB Converter Cable for Car Stereo. Started as a kickstarter project, but are now able to buy. Will try that one out.
I got one of these and found I can't get anything to play through the stereo, the audio plays on the phone speakers but the track info displays on the stereo screen and the steering wheel controls also work, I can disable USB audio streaming via the dashlinq app which makes radio player within dashlinq work properly.. but nothing else works.. have you had any luck?
Thanks for your reply. You are a step ahead of me. I have the Wirelinq cable but couldn't get it to work, not even the track info on my cars stereo display. It recognise the Wirelinq cable, but not my phone. I am in contact with GROM and even tried to install a new firmware update (which I was able to install myself by connecting the cable to my computer), so there last message was:
This is issue of the phone USB Audio output in software not working correctly as standardized by Android's AOSP. You will have to contact Huawei to get support and resolve it on phone's software end.

Did you ever get anywhere with this? I'm a new P20 Pro owner (also having switched from iphone 6) and wanting to crack this issue. Thanks.
Not sure if there is a solution. iPhones behave differently when connected to stereos, just like an usb stick. Android devices don't, unfortunately. I am using an AUX cable with the usb-c adapter in my husbands car, or bluetooth streaming in my car.

No, it didn't work. Maybe it will if GROM will come out with an update. I've returned my cable and have bought a bluetooth to AUX receiver adapter on eBay for just a few dollar. This actually works very well, you plug the bluetooth adapter in your USB and the cable in your AUX and you can listening wireliss music on each app through bluetooth. The downside is that you won't be able to see your track details, no remote from your steer and the quality is different. But you can still charge you phone with a normal USB cable while listening. It's not a solution, but I got used to it now.
Not a bad idea with the bluetooth to aux!

iphones actually don't behave like a usb stick when connected to a stereo. the music is still played on the iphone, but the sound is streamed to the stereo. controls on the stereo actually control the playback on the iphone itself.
with android, to play audio over usb, you need to use mass storage mode, which will behave just like a usb stick.
ios can output digital audio over it's usb cable, which the stereo can receive.
android can output audio through usb-c, but i don't think that it can be used to output audio over the usb cable like iphones can. it might be some protocol that iphones use and android phones don't, but technically it should be possible.
Just stumbled upon this thread as I am in the same situation. Basically, I have a P20 Pro and a Huawei Mediapad M5 Lite that are behaving exactly the same..i.e they cannot play audio from USB to car stereo's USB ports. The internal media can be browsed and played via car stereos interface but you cannot stream music via USB from phone (say Spotify) to car stereo.
USB audio streaming works if I enabled ANDROID AUTO at the car stereo and installed ANDROID AUTO in the phone/tablet. You might ask why not just settle for this setup?
I can, butI I hate so much the AA's "Swipe to Unlock" lock and the changes in the UI when AA is active.
What I want is the plain/original phone interface (without AA) and all audio routed via USB.
Bluetooth, I know is an option, but again, it would be nice if this (USB) can be solved. It seems possible, I think. If AA can switch USB audio streaming on, can other apps or workaround/reverse engineering not?
BTW, i tried playing with the Developer Options, USB Configuration as "MTP or Audio Source" --- no luck here
Just bought a Kenwood DDX6906S receiver for my 2013 GMC Sierra I cannot get anything to work via USB. USB debugging enabled. I feel like I've been going in circles. any help would be super appreciated, TIA

Make AndroidAuto WIRELESS using 'USB over the Air'!

Hello, I have an idea how we can make the current Android Auto completely WIRELESS.
Idea is as follows:
Plug a micro Dongle in the car's USB port.
The Dongle will essentially be a WiFi Tranciever. (it may need custom code/firmware etc.)
The Dongle will talk to the Android Phone over WiFi (Because Bluetooth is already being used by Android Auto).
A custom program will be running on the Android phone to send ALL USB Data to the Dongle using WiFi.
Suggested Dongle models:
Xbee, Arduino with WiFi module, any other similar board, possibly any cheap Chinese WiFi USB dongle available on Ebay/Aliexpress.
Things to consider:
The Car's infotainment must recognize the Dongle when it is plugged in as a "USB device" (not a USB Stick/Flash Drive !!!)
The Dongle may need custom code/firmware that will start sending packets to the car's infotainment as soon as it is connected/powered up/car ignition is on, in order to Emulate a phone running android auto.
In the mean time, the app running on the phone will already be connected to the Dongle and the two will be talking to each other.
I you have any other suggestions, leave a comment bellow.
PS: Such devices (USB Over the Air) are actually available on the market, but are quite bulky. We need something smaller.
But even if it is big, we can use a Micro USB plug like this one with flat cable, that will run in the Phone tray, where the board will be hidden so it will not be visible at all!!! :good::laugh:
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000325524998.html
Just cut the other end of the flat cable if needed and solder as necessary.
Again, if you have specific ideas/suggestions leave a comment bellow.
