Looking for help on this one. Every 3-5 days my Ultra gets into a state where no voice can be heard by either myself or the person on the other phone when a call is made or received, but I can hear the ring tone if I'm calling prior to the person answering, and my phone rings as normal if someone calls me. But when answering the call it's just silence on both sides. A reboot fixes this only for it to happen again 3-5 days later, requiring another reboot.

At first I assumed it was a corruption of the rom I had installed, so I flashed back to my stock image with Odin, including a fresh VOD CSC install. Unfortunately, it's still happening after this. Speaking as an engineer, it's unusual but not unheard of for a device to have a hardware issue of this type and it be rectified each and every time with a reboot, that would normally point to a software/firmware error of some sort. However, the fact it's continuing to happen after a completely fresh re-flash of stock Android suggests my worst fears that it is hardware. I could try some things, like not installing Magisk or even re-locking my bootloader, but I don't believe either would be a factor. I only used Magisk for rooting and don't install additional modules. I've also ruled out the sim card or sim slots by swapping to an e-sim, only for it to still happen.
Anyway, any suggestions would be welcome, especially if you have suffered something similar. There is an easy fix, which is to schedule a reboot every morning at around 3am, but I'd sooner not have to do this before working out what the underlying cause is.
Was this an issue before you rooted the device? If not that points to a software issue. Is the CSC native to the region you're in? If not you might try flashing the native firmware or your service provider's firmware. I don't believe one can relock the bootloader, at least as far as Knox is concerned which is integrated into various system entities. Have you attempted a Factory Reset? Unfortunately Samsung isn't likely to assist on a rooted device.
Ok, I have the 512 Gb version, Exynos and I have the same issue. I AM on stock so it is definitely the hardware. My manager has the same phone and he doesn't have this issue. Not sure what space capacity is his but I think it is a random hardware issue. I mean only some specific devices have this issue. I think it is time to ask Samsung to look into this.
I don't do many calls from the SIM , mainly Whatsapp, Messenger and Teams...
Same here! It happened when my sister calls and i thought that it was a problem on her end. But today it happened with another person. I've linked my Galaxy watch 4 lte to that same plan. I will test it tomorrow.
UPDATE: I cleared the cache and now every test call was succesful!

Hello. Have any of you experienced total signal loss? (The triangle in the status bar is hollow/empty). This happens seemingly on random and it "fixes" itself in a minute or so, and I can make calls and have mobile data.
Thanks
I have been also facing this issue lately with different roms. In my case, I loose the network and have to reboot multiple times to get the network up. Sometimes because of this, my phone shuts off. Not sure what is happening.
I flashed Dirty Unicorns a few days ago, and signal would drop every few seconds. Turns out the APN was set for MetroPCS, changed it to T-Mobile IPv6 and it fixed it.
I found my issue is related to my network operator. I am not sure why this happening, everytime I reboot or shut it down, I loose the signal and it takes many attempt's to get a connection. It could either be lollipop bug, network compatibility or issue with the device. Will find it out on Monday.
same here
I've been dealing with this same thing for two days. I have Sprint.
I was on Chroma and traveling. I noticed I lost data during my drive. Once I got to the location, my wife had full 3g and I had nothing. I thought it must have been from dirty flashing an update. I wiped and flashed again chroma with the sprint.zip for apn. Still didn't work. I occasionally would connect to 3g but would lose it randomly for long periods of time. I ended up walking around with my verizon hotspot to have data.
I just flashed stock and I've been waiting 10 minutes for it to try to activate. I'm hoping it will work this time. What a mess this phone has become.
It seems like it's a lollipop bug. I tested my sim on a different phone and multiple times, I rebooted without any issues. I wonder if Google messed with lollipop or is it Motorola.

Yeah, even if there the signal bar gets empty, it doesn't interrupt in incoming or outgoing calls Even mobile data works perfectly fine. For me it comes to normal after 5-6 seconds
For me it does interrupt calls and I don't have mobile data. I really hope its a lollipop issue. I guess they can add that as number 1500 to the bug list...
I am currently experiencing that exact same problem no matter which rom I am using. It is really becoming a PITA. Spent 950$ for this POS phone.
Not a lollipop issue.

Few things to explain if you really want to find out what is wrong. Who is your carrier? Or you running stock or modified ROM? Are you rooted? Giving information like this may help you get to the problem. If it were a lollipop issue, don't you think everyone or at least a lot more people would be experiencing the same thing and posting about it???? Come on guys, be a little more precise when posting issues with said device.

Hi,
WIth Fido in Canada. As some others have posted, if I choose LTE (recommended) in Preferred Network Type, I lost my connection every 15 minutes for 1 minute. If I set to 3g, all is fine. I tried the sim in my nexus 5, doesn't happen.
Tried CM and some other AOSP customs roms, always have the problem. Also tried different radios., same problem. I will definitely retry with the factory image soon, but I have strong doubts it's the OS. I contacted Google, they are sending me a replacement phone.
It's insulting to shell out 950$CAD for a new phone, have it bug on you, then have them ship you a freaking refurbished device. I have a 64GB midnight blue from the first Canadian run (I was one of the lucky bastards, or unlucky!). Then they wonder why people buy iPhones...yes they are very limited, but at least the damn thing works.
Almost every single Nexus I have purchased has given me problems (4-5-6-7-7(2013)). The only one that has yet to show me problem is the 9, but that was a gift for my mother, so she won't even notice if things go bad. I am definitely done buying a Nexus device when it is released...lol
Forcing 3G
Hey Guys,
I tried switching from Euphoria OS to Omnirom but no dice.
I deleted all unused APNs and forced 3G connection, rebooted and it seems to be stable for now.
Hope there's a better fix soon.
Got another nexus 6 from Google...same problem. Every 10 minutes LTE drops. POS....
No problems here.. Sounds like a network issue not a hardware problem.
Hey guys,
my Samsung Galaxy Note 8 was on the table, when the AVG-Anti Theft alarm started suddenly.
I thought that it is just a bug and unlocked my phone, using the PIN, that I set when setting up AVG.
Now, the intetesting part starts:
I was not able, to connect my phone to the carrier-network (let's call it carrier A), which means I can't call anybody or send SMS or do anything, a phone is supposed to do.
At thirst, I thought that the sim card must be defect and tried to put it into another phone. The other phone did not have any problems, connecting to the network.
My second thought was that the modem or something like that in my phone has a defect, which is causing the issues. Oh boy, was I wrong, as every other carriers sim cards are working with the Note 8. I do have 3 sim cards from carrier A and each one from carrier B and C. All three cards from carrier A are not working, but B and C are.
Then I decided to call the carrier A support, which assured that my phone is causing the problems, rather than their network.
Afterwards, I tried hard resetting my phone and even re-flashing the stock ROM did not do anything.
I would appreciate any help.
P. S. I'm sorry, if my English is not that good, it is a foreign language for me.
Looks like it is the avg app that is causing the trouble, have you contacted de developer?
Contacted AVG
Yes I did contact the AVG support, but have not got an answer yet. But do you think that AVG could make such changes to the system, which would persist, even after a factory reset/ re-flash?
Hi, I get the annoying message "Open channel for BIP" from time to time. I can relate it to the second SIM-card. After I put it in, the messaging starts. Can I switch that off somehow?

Thanks, but already found that as well. It's a bit old and not a solution. Here a summary of what was found out there:
What is BIP:
Barrier Independent Protocol, relative new high speed channel for moving data between a BIP server and a storage device (like the SD card in a phone).
Someone meant it could have something to do with a SD card. There is no in the phone, the SD-Slot is used for the second SIM.
Another one updated the phone. Didn't help me.
App bugs? Don't think so. The messaging start when inserting the second SIM-card and stops after removing. No Apps installed or changed during that process.
The last person change his SIM-card then, and the messaging stopped for him.
So the main question remains: what ist that BIP about and what does it have to do with that SIM-card and can I stop it somehow?
I already changed the SIM-card. Now it's a new one but the same provider.
The other SIM doesn't make any problems, it's another provider. But the provider might not be the problem. When I exchange the place of each SIM the problem still exists. Does it have something to do with the combined SD-/SIM-card-slot?
Any ideas?

Some users said updating fixed the issue, but if nothing there worked on yours then I would honestly just try a factory reset to rule out other potential factors. It might still be related to an app that triggers something when 2nd sim is inserted, not sure... Are you on latest stock firmware, or rooted on custom roms?

OK, that's quite weird. I've absolutely no clue how, but it seems to be fixed. Without factory reset. No root, no custom rom. Latest firmware, so there was no option to update anything.
What have I done now:
I tried to figure out several combinations with both or one SIM-card in different slot-combinations. I wanted to know if it could have anything to do with the provider or the SIM-card-mount. Between I restarted and reinserted the SIM-Card mount several times. Then somehow the messaging stopped. Till now (about 24h) it's best behaved
So I'm sorry that I've opened an new thread, because it's quite close to the result of that one:

Goad you managed to get it sorted out, and thanks for posting back to close the loop
OK, it started again. Now installed Norton Antivirus and it found no virus but apps with unusual/unexpected behavior. It was one for my electronic scale (yolanda-app) and one for voice recording. Deinstalled both and the message was gone. Hopefully forever now...
I have no idea about anything y'all are discussing. However I just opened, turned on and connect to my hotspot, my second Samsung Galaxy J7crown in 2 months and I am getting same pop up. Try to search for answer and I get opinions, cause Google and assistant absolutely suck now on any actual FACT finding anymore. Did anyone figure this out yet? Google won't. I'm sure it's another thing they DON'T want you to know about. Frustrated....
I have to agree. I just recently got a j7 crown and am experiencing this same message from time to time. I just came here looking for answers but have found nothing. Hope it's nothing serious
I had this message only once, when I went to Japan then switched SIM card.
I have had the same issue all day today. I've had this phone since November and have randomly seen this pop up but never like it has today. I went to settings, about phone and clicked update and it has fixed it so far. It has only been 20 minutes but hoping it doesn't happen anymore. I never thought something would annoy and anger me the way that did lol!
I've had the same Galaxy J7 crown with StraightTalk service, since Feb 2019. I've never removed neither my SD nor SIM card. I only hey the BIP message briefly at bottom of screen every time I turn my phone on (like from being turned off completely, not just the screen).
It's not a nueseance to me, I am just wondering what exactly it means.
Any answers? In layman's terms? Thanks!
Duh!..
They are watching you. Isnt it odd that there is no definitive answer????
Hi folks,
after the last update I have a big problem: when I start a call suddently the signal goes 0 (on both SIMs) and I receive a "no network" error. After a few seconds the signals go back but sometimes I have to wait for 15 or 20 minutes to call otherwise the call drops again.
It happens even when receiving calls.
I have this problem at around 30/40% of calls I try to make and this is very disappointing because I use the phone for work and I do many calls everyday.
A user on an Italian forum had the same problem two updates ago, he told me that he solved after a reset of the phone. I'm desperate now, tomorrow it's holiday in Switzerland so I think I will do it.
NOTE: It's strange nobody on internet is talking about this problem... It's only me?
Having the same issues with this build.
I have the HK dual sim, which I flashed the SEA firmware onto last year.
I'm having to go back to my old phone until this is resolved, I have missed several calls because of it. I tried a factory reset, which seemed to clear it up for a short while, but the problem came back.
Same problem here. After the update of
51.1.A.5.159I cannot receive or place calls
I cannot receive or send messages
IF I am inside a building. The network goes from 2 bars to 0 when I try to call. If i go outside of the building the cellular network is stronger (full) and calls are going through. I suspect there's something wrong with the baseband maybe? Which is what I was trying to search for yesterday. Was wondering if the current baseband for Android 11 is new or maybe it is the old one from Android 10?
Regardless, I can wholeheartedly say that Android 11 has basically shattered the signal strenght on this device to the point of making it useless. Now I can use it as a multimedia device... weeeheeeee.... Buy a premium device they say, it will be worth it, they say. Never had this issue on any of my Oneplus devices. Shame on Sony!
(btw my phone has the international software, not the HK one. using it on one single sim- XQ-AT-51).
The italian user told me now he's fine, the problem didn't came back.
Tomorrow I have a Switzerland holiday, I'm going to reset the phone to try to fix the problem.
Thanks for answering my question, it seems I'm not the only one with this problem. It's a pity there's no more official Sony forum to discuss these issues.

The phone is now restoring the backup from Google but this evening I don't think I will make a single call.
Tomorrow at work I will stress it (usually I make 1h of calls everyday, using both SIMs), and give you the results. Cheers!
The situation is maybe worse than before.
I don't remember if is it possible to downgrade. Xperifirm? Still works with new phones?
Otherwise I have to use my old XZ Premium because I have so many issues at work.

The thing I noticed is that the call drops when switching network from 4G to 2G. Expecially on my Italian SIM, i have a weak 4G signal in my office (1-0 bars) but I have a full 4 bars 2G signal. Before this update when I start a call you can clearly see the signal bar going from 0-1 to full 4 meaning the phone switched to 2G. After this update it was impossible to place a call from my office on my italian SIM because it fails in that 4G/2G switch.
I put that SIM in "GSM only" and I had no issues in managing calls. It's unpractical but works.
The problem is worse on my Swiss SIM (the one I use for work) that has no 2G coverage, so I leave it in 5G/LTE/WCDMA/ecc ecc and hope the best. But I see some switch happens even there ranging from 0-1 to 3 bars (I think is 4G/3G switch. I don't have 5G or 2G coverage in my office). So I can't do anything to avoid the issue, that happens randomly but it's quite frustrating
(...)Same problem on HK. Does anyone think that the problem will be solved with an update? Sony flagship haha. The gsm signal was much weaker than the former P20pro before .... 178. Now ..... disaster. I think the only asset Remaining that you can read "network unavailable" on a 4K screen
So far mine seems much better after the latest update 58.1.A.5.222.
Here's hoping it was a temporary glitch.
Please try to use only one SIM until new updates.
I have the same issues but with only one it works fine.
Do we have any news about a new update so far ?
Have a good day!
Today the 58.1.A.5.222A update arrived, I tested the phone and seems to be OK, tomorrow I will test it harder during the workday.
PS: since two weeks I was using my old XZ Premium and the 1 II was resting in the drawer. So sad. I tried to flash another firmware but I had errors on Flashtool and newflasher. Nothing worked wtf.
After a working day in my office with many calls on both SIMs (a place where the problem was at its best as wrote before) I can confirm you the update completely solved the problem.
So thanks to everybody for the support, I hope you'll also be able to fix it with this update.

I got the same software number and my problem still persists. Thank you for updating the thread with your findings. Glad to hear yours is working now.
Hello everyone, I faced the same issue on my device after updating to the software version mentioned by author, I've fixed the issue by flashing .280 software for SEA customisation. Original one was HK. So, now I'm able to use my phone as usual. Hope this tip will help somewho. Good luck with your devices.
I don't know how I ended up letting this issue last for so long but it has been happening for a good 3-4 months. It might have been after a firmware update, it might not. But at this point it's driving me coco-nuts.
Phone: Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G (SM-G998B/DS), using an e-sim.
Whenever I try to "actively" use my phone on cellular data (e.g. opening the Youtube app), without fail I will lose all connectivity and the "No Service" logo will show in the status bar. It takes 10-30secons to cycle back to having service, rinse, repeat. I get 2-3 seconds of working cellular data each cycle.
This doesn't happen if I don't try to "actively" use data. The phone holds service, I'll even receive Whatsapp Calls with no problem so long as I don't initiate them.
I've tried resetting network settings. I've also tried switching Network mode from "5G/4G/3G/2G (auto connect)" to the other options.
Any ideas?
bump
It's likely a problem with your e-sim data plan. Have you tried using a normal sim?
I should've mentioned I tested it with a plastic sim from a different operator and the issue remained.
I had this same issue since Jan. A few S21U phones have it and it seems to be some kind of software + hardware issue that affects a small portion of the phones.
The OneUI 4.1 update should fix it. have you got this on your phone yet? If not you should see it soon.
Thread from the Samsung community forum. posts at the end from MattH665 is me, detailing my extremely frustrating ordeal with this issue:
Samsung account
us.community.samsung.com
Until you have the update, if you force your phone to 3G (assuming 3G isn't shut off where you are) then you might be able to get by. Mine worked fine on 3g (of course it's slow).

I had tried googling the issue using many, many keywords and was getting stumped with unrelated results.
Your "S21 Ultra reception fail" youtube video is basically exactly what was happening on my phone, albeit a bit faster to recover from the no service status.
And...... I basically got the notification for the OneUI 4.1 update around the same time I was notified of your response. The issue has disappeared altogether.
Thank you for bringing it up with the techs at Samsung. Don't know how long I could've held on to the device in this state.
As a side note to anyone reading this in the future, there was an update to the "Private Compute Services" app available as soon as the phone reboot from the OneUI 4.1 update. The 24th of March patch notes claim "operating system improvements and capabilities. Bug fixes and various optimizations.". That could also have been the fix.
Cheers.
