Back after a long hiatus - Introductions

First dove into the Android world with the Samsung SII (International). Quickly rooted, then later installed CM7, viva Team Hacksung.
Moved on to a variety of Nexus phones and tablets, and then a Pickle 2, typically running CM or Lineage and compiling, even made a commit once...ONCE (required some help from Ricardo Cerqueira because of my ham fist) . Back to the Google phone fold with a Nexus 6, locked bootloader, no intent to do anything aside from sideload the occasional OTA.

Cyanogenmod Head Joins Samsung...

I'm very proud that I tote around CM7 (latest nightly) on my G2, which is a very polished rom. I have tried other roms, which they had their perks and trade offs, but I always came back to Cyanogenmod. I guess it is so good, it caught the eyes of a handset manufacture Samsung. See link below.
Cyanogenmod head joins Samsung to work on Android.
I hope since the head of CM7 joins Samsung, the CM7 team keeps up with the development of other handsets.
dont worry this is a very big win for the android world
hes still the owner of cyanogenmod and hes still gonna work in cm8 when ice scream sandwich comes out! plus hes got an amazing team of developers to back him up that your really not gonna feel any diference
also with steve in samsung i guess that crappy touchwiz UI will no longer be crappy
I highky doubt Steve is gonna mess with the TouchWiz UI as his focus with cyanogenmod has always been complete user control, stability and performance. I hope that he's the peptobismol to Samsungs bloated stuff...
Wow this means we're gonna have big improvements to our custom ROMs thanks to the knowledge he gets there...
I'd rather have him work with Google on Android, and not Samsung.
so this means only samsungs will get CM?

which means, samsung has monopoly on CM roms
nope. samsungs work is samsungs work and CM will be his own project, focusing on android. For some strange feeling that I got, I take it that CM won't be releasing any projects for the future Galaxy S line or any Samsung products
Have to wait and see what he does with Samsung. It's not like they are going to turn him loose in their software and allow him to make a completely different ROM for Samsung to run.
More than likely he will have some creative input - but will be a fellow coder (a.k.a. monkey) that will only be allowed to work on a specific parts of it.
Which is too bad actually - Sammy user's might get a slightly better running ROM - but it still won't be Cyanogen

[Q] OnePlus One Rom, ported to Nexus 5.... Can't we have it too??? ^_^

Hey everyone,
i just got this phone,
so far loving the fact i hold it, basically, with two hands all the time... i've never been so involved with a phone before... Bahahha ^^_^
Okay,
so i was cruising around the internet, when i ran across this thread:
http://www.loadthegame.com/2014/07/30/nexus-5-modded-run-oneplus-ones-cyanogenmod-11s
It appears to be that the OnePlus One, which has direct support with CyanogenMod (2 years support life), has been ported over to the Nexus 5.
Since our phones are so similar, what would we need to do to get this rom up and running on our phone?
Leave your input/thoughts on this...??
Well first off cm11 is on most phones. They just happen to build the stock OS for one plus one. It being ported to nexus 5 is no great thing. Nexus 5 has had cm11 for a year or so. And several versions of it at that. And our device is not similar to either of those. One plus one and nexus 5 are very similar but ours is way off from those. We don't forum an AOSP pure Google experience OS. Not even close to aosp. Or cm11. Which is very similar to AOSP with heavy customability. So as far as porting a very different Rom to our phone....with a locked boot loader and no custom recovery on 4.4 which is what cm11 is...... Well Ethan Hunt (mission impossible) said "f#÷× that. That's impossible" but playfulgod is working diligently on us a cm11 and custom recovery for 4.4. He built the custom recovery /installation apk for cwm or twrp on 4.2.2. Its in the dev section. But as far as similar phones and software. We are closer to the G2 and G3 than anything else.
The G3 and OnePlus One have the same SoC.
The G Flex and the Nexus 5 have the same SoC, so I can see where this phone is more similar to the Nexus 5.
What is needed here is developers interested in the task.
Since I am getting this phone Monday and haven't used it before, I am not sure what all goes into this. Maybe it's got a locked bootloader, maybe there are other issues. SoC is not the only thing to worry about here. The modules for every phone is different than any other and there are slight differences such as radio, LEDs, etc that can have significant impact on notifications, Bluetooth, network, etc.
The bottom line is you need interested developers, and this phone just doesn't have them.

LineageOS and BLU?

This might be a dumb question or even the wrong place the ask but what the hell. It sounds like a few if not lots of the various BLU model phones have bootloaders that can be unlocked at least the R1 HD does. What are the chances of LineageOS getting an official build/port? I have seen the unofficial ports (have not used any yet as it sounds like it might be a little buggy and not regularly updated along side LineageOS main builds.

If you take a look at ROM development for the R1 HD you'll see that any and all efforts in porting LineageOS to it returned in a lot of frustration to the devs. Mainly because they don't have the MTK kernel source code for it so the camera and some other minor stuff doesn't work as intended. If I were you, I'd move on to a nicer phone with a Snapdragon processor like Moto E or Moto G. I'm contemplating that myself in a few months as my Nexus 5 currently has been showing some CPU instabilities, heating up and shutting down randomly. So my main phone is the R1 HD right now. I was thinking about a OnePlus 5 but its not waterproof so it's a no go for me.
Early releases of the ROM had some security issues that allowed us to reflash them with SP Flash Tools. These holes have since been plugged and anyone who updates to the latest over-the-air software has a phone that can not be flashed with a custom recovery or modified ROM. There are a number of posts here from people that have updated to the latest over-the-air version and can no longer modify their phones.
At some point, the phones being sold by Amazon will start coming through with the newer software versions that can not be reflashed. These phones will not be able to be modified or have ROMs developed or modified for them. That's why I bought a backup as soon as they announced a new model.

Thanks, my r1 hd is by no means my main phone. I have lots of misc android based phones that I use as wifi only devices etc.. I have my r1 hd rooted debloated and boot loader unlocked. Was just hoping to see a custom stable nougat rom at some point. All my other (mostly Samsung devices) are running LineageOS and running just fine. I bought my r1 hd for my 13 year old daughter as the price was just right for a entry-level android phone. Can't beat $50 from Amazon after you remove all the Amazon crap ware.

Very true. I miss my Nexus 5... It's working but there's a problem with the temperature sensor. If the CPU heats up it reboots on its own.
So my R1 HD has become my main phone.
I've hacked the shie out of it. Magisk, Xposed, N-ify, GravityBox, etc. It's pretty much exactly like I want it to be.
Really wish they'd release an official Nougat for it though.
Custom ROMs like LineageOS... Forget about it.
It's sad and I thought that by now some devs wouldn't cracked this thing open but nope. Ain't gonna happen.
Looks like the new Moto E4 will trump the R1 HD one year later. I think I'm going to buy one and pass on my R1 HD to my mom. Haha!

Veterans, what has changed in your life since you started exploring XDA developers?

My first account was made in 2011 when I was 12. I had a Galaxy Y S5630 (totoro) armv6 powered mini vibrator. I wanted to upgrade to ICS from gingerbread and XDA was my Bible back then. (I couldn't do it because CyanogenMod didn't have Broadcom drivers back then sadly but I learnt to install custom firmwares)
Now I'm an AI engineer in an MNC at 23. I miss modding and the excitement it gave me back then.
Now, all my work emails, banking apps, important government documents and messages are on my phone so modding feels like a task!
Also, Android development hasn't been revolutionary in terms of functionality. It's now come to performance and smoother hardware interfacing. It has saturated.
I miss the Steve Kondik, Koushik Datta and KANGing days listening to Linkin Park, Akon and Eminem while flashing CWM before every ROM installation on my Windows 7 powered core duo 2 machine playing GTA San Andreas waiting for the latest CyanogenMod Nightly to download.
I wish I could go back to those days of being excited to Google up the latest UI changes in the next version of Android and then waiting for Nexus' announcement.
Surely, now that you have rejoined XDA, your assistance to young users will be as exciting to them as your experience of years past.

Absolutely! I'm back because I want to rejoin and rejuvenate the community. It feels good!
Welcome back and good luck on that...

I am the same age, I got into android modding in 2015 trying to install android kitkat on my samsung galaxy star pro and ended up flashing a JB ROM themed as kitkat called "kitkit" lmao was very fun. Themeing was my entry point into android.
Fast forward now, I work in android R&D in an tech startup and I'm having real fun but it can get lonely at times because I'm a individual contributor.
Let's see where the future takes us.
As for android, it has saturated and it's basically hardware revisions and better software.
I do remember using CWM recovery, Philz Touch Recovery, Carliv Image Kitchen for MTK etc but TWRP became the defacto go-to recovery, thanks DeesTroy!
CM became Lineage and so on.
I still have an Samsung Galaxy S5 with me which I mod all the time, Galaxy M32 4G as my main driver and it has increasing become less fun to mod android due to safetynet and more restrictions. Android is becoming iOS and iOS is becoming android, weird but ok.
Welcome back to XDA!

Question Custom rom?

Hello. There is no custom rom for samsung s23 (sm-911b / ds)?
No, and sadly, there will unlikely ever be.
It looks like you are new to XDA, actually you should only add the "Development" tag if you are actually posting your own development, questions and discussions like this should have the "Question" tag.
Lol ... Very curious to know what come to the conclusion "and sadly, there will unlikely ever be".
The phone has been released 3 months ago, stop staying misinformation.
There is already one for the S23 ultra.

Yeah it's not certain a custom rom will never be released, but the software currently being released by OEMs (and especially Samsung IMO) is already so jam packed with features and quite well executed as well.
I once used to root every android phone I had and even flashed new roms daily as I was doing beta testing. Ever since my Pixel 5 however, this desire has been gone completely. And it appears this is the same for other users, as the user activity on XDA is only a fraction of what it used to be in the days when I was still here for Samsung Nexus S and Galaxy S4 roms.

It's really a community thing. I agree users tend to not using custom ROM anymore. And yes, it's coming mostly because Android is just becoming as almost perfect and Samsung is really doing a great job with OneUi & update on time.
But I believe users tend also to keep the same smartphone longer than before. So I guess , and if the community is still there, custom ROM could have a big place once Samsung will stop to do major update on the S23 (in four years approximately).
So let's see, this phone is awesome, and could have the perfect hardware to make it alive longer than 4 years.
The future will tell
If some people work on bringing up LineageOS on this phone please let us know. People are already working on the OnePlus 11 and Moto X40, with non-booting builds for now.
We need to join forces to bring AOSP/LineageOS to the sm8550. CAF sources are available, Samsung sources too, bootloaders can be unlocked, so there's no reason we can't achieve this.

yess samsung release their source code, but sometimes they left few broken code that couldn't be track down easily because of no version control system.
