Hello! I've been out of the rooting game for a while and for the life of me, been trying to find a step-by-step on how to root and install a custom rom from beginning to end, but have been unfortunately unable to find anything like that.
I also hear that unlocking the bootloader disables certain features, is there a way to prevent this?
Is there a post that I missed? What is the best guide for this?
There is no guide necessary as all steps are generic and similar to any other phone:
- install a custom recovery (e.g. TWRP) and follow the installation instructions there.
- install a ROM using that recovery.
- install root, nowadays most people choose Magisk for this, again using generic installation instructions.
Of course you have to unlock your bootloader in case you want to load a custom ROM. You can optionally save your DRM keys before you do this.
Good luck.

I am admittedly a noob, but I have searched exhaustively, and cannot find out how to accomplish this without installing another ROM. I was able to get a used N1 that is stock and unrooted to use on an upcoming trip overseas. I hoped to use it while I was there, but recently found out that I would need VPN access to access many services.
I just got the 2.3.6 update for the N1, but found out my phone has to be rooted for OpenVPN to work. Is there a tool that I can use to root this phone, leaving stock Android on it? I'm leaving in a couple of days and don't really have a lot of time to learn about installing a custom ROM or time to install that custom ROM.
Thanks for your help.
This is covered in the wiki I believe, but the short of it goes:
1) "oem fastboot unlock"
2) Flash new recovery image (I prefer AmonRA, CWM is good too though) from fastboot
3) Once you have your new recovery, flash the super user zip
4) All done, you now have root access.
This is a pretty good guide (from the wiki): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=636795
Hi XDA members,
I need to root a HTC One (m7) on Verizon. I have been reading threads and watching videos but I still find myself confused as to how this works. I could really use some help and I would greatly appreciate any I can get.
I need to root the device so I can gain the full functionality of the program 'ispyoo'. Some of it's features work on a stock phone. But features like facebook, text, email monitoring only work if the device is rooted. Otherwise I have no need to root the device. Would like it to resemble 'stock' yet be rooted.
Looking for the most basic, simple, and stable way to go about rooting and roming this device.
Best I have gathered is I need to unlock boot loader, root the device, and install a custom rom.... What am I missing? Any suggestions or directions to a post/video I should look at will be much appreciated.

Verizon blocked unlocking the bootloader .. you have to use Firewater or SunShine to get s-off to unlock a Verizon One
The steps for unrooting a HTC One are:
Unlock the bootloader.
This is normally done through HTC Developer, but the person above me says that this is not possible for Verizon M7s; I can't comment as I am from the UK, but if you follow his instructions that should be this part done.
Flash a custom recovery.
ROMs are installed through a part of the OS called recovery; this is separate to the Android system. TWRP is my personal favourite, but there are others you can use.
Instructions can be found here.
Flash a custom ROM.
For most people, the next step is to install their favourite custom operating system. If you just want to keep stock like you said, you still need to flash a custom ROM, but in this case it would be the rooted stock ROM; the Verizon rooted stock can be found here, along with instructions.
Hope this helps!
Good day!
I am new here and I am interested with rooting my HTC ONE M7.
My purpose is to install a certain app which requires it. (XMOD games)
Before I do this I just want to ask a few questions and I hope you can help me.
1. Is it required to unlock the bootloader? or there is an option to not unlock it?
2. Granting that I have rooted my HTC ONE, can I still get updates on my OS if it prompts me to update it?
3. I watched some videos here and learned I need to unlock and then root, is that all I need to get the XMOD games app working?
For now I am only interested with using that app.
4. After unlocking the bootloader, it says it will be back to stock settings, can I restore my backup in my HTC SYNC manager and then proceed with rooting next? or I need to unlock + root and then restore?
I want to restore my back up using the HTC SYNC manager so that I wont have to install the apps and lose some other info.
TIA

1. yes you need to unlock
2. you must be full stock to update, but rooting requires flashing of a custom recovery first, recommended is the latest version of TWRP recovery: http://dl.twrp.me/m7/ then put this on your inernal storage and flash it to get root: http://download.chainfire.eu/696/SuperSU/ you will need stock recovery back to update, however, no one is sure if the M7 is going to get anymore updates yet, its pretty EOL
3. see answer 2
4. yes unlocking wipes the phone / factory reset, so backup everything first, unlock, flash recovery, root, reboot and restore.
I need more reading to pull this off without any problem. I've been reading some nasty stuff and I need to be careful.
I was under the impression that rooting is easy breezy. lol
Thanks a lot for answering my questions mate.
hello raga, I have a huawei p9 and as you probably will not see the update at oreo, I decided to root my phone. I would like to know how to do it, if it is better to do it through supersu, if through magisk (what is the difference between the two?).
Also, once I've done the root what can I do? I saw that it is and little for this phone ... Do you have any suggestions? Thank you.

and once magisk is installed, what can I do with it? what chance opens me?
Look, 'rooting' is complicated, you have to unlock Bootloader, you have to flash custom Recovery, then to install custom pre-rooted ROM or to root yourself the stock ROM
If you are unfamiliar with them (incl. ADB, Fastboot) then better gave up or postpone and search through XDA to becone familiar with.
It's not possible to do it all in 15 minutes (and for total novice not even in one day) and nobody can walk you through tens and tens of steps - everything is well described in the threads you can find on XDA and read
Giving you such advice for your good ,- there are too many reports on bricked phones resulted by unfamiluar users who ad-hoc juped into flashing (particularly for Huawei phones)

Thank you very much, I come from a Moto g3 on which I flashed the LineageOS, so something root I know. I just needed information, maybe what thread to follow and what can i do with the root or magisk ...
O.T. The p9 is fine even with the rom stock, but what is the best custom rom for this phone?
This is IMO (see also the number of users) the best custom ROM
https://forum.xda-developers.com/p9/development/rom-huawei-p9-magicrainbow-v4-t3759292
Debloated stock ROM, pre-rooted, with additional tools ported and built in
Generally if you go for AOSP ROMs, yhey cannot use native drivers and cannot fully/properly utilize camera, etc

Ok, thx, as soon as I have time and I want to try flash. hopefully, from the procedure it seems a bit 'complicated ahahha. Thanks again.
Ok i just followed a guide online and got my Root Access but with stock firmware. Thinking of switching to a custom Rom.
-How can i find which one is right for me, and good for Note 8 in General? I eep hearing of Lineage 17.1..
-What that Gapps Package you get to install? Fo install them prior to the ROm or even after i boot? If you dont do this you dont have google access? Like not having Google account linked Play store etc?
-While flashing that new ROM that ends up being the one of my choice. Do i have to repeat the previosu steps and instal magisc etc, or is the root now done forerver, like a one and done step? Cause i was installing the magic the no opt verit and rmm state modeule on twtp. Hope i wont have to this each time
