Hi,
Anyone of you guys have this problem? After connecting a USB storage (USB flash drive) using an OTG cable and dismount it properly, the device would not go to "sleep" anymore. The only way to resolve this is to reboot. It happens in all firmwares released so far (KL1, KL3, LA1, LA4). Attached are some screenshots explaining the problem.
Nobody has this problem?
Yup, identical issue here. Didn't know what was causing this problem until you identified it. After using OTG cable for USB storage you need to reboot otherwise you won't get 'deep sleep', cpu stays at 200 MHz. I'm on stock LA4 with CF-Root LA4.
I don't have the chance to check since my cable hasn't arrived yet, but open up Settings > Applications > Manage applications and choose the Running tab, see maybe there's a process or service that you could kill.

I've checked Running Services, both before and after using the cable and nothing is added to the list at any stage.

I think the "UsbStorageUnmountter" is running under Android System process so we can't see it. BetterBatteryStats shows it clearly.
I'm trying to get Samsung informed about this issue so that it can fix it in the firmware, but so far is unable to. I went to one of Samsung Service Centre to inform them but the technician just shrugged and say they only know how to change the parts. I asked them to file a report to Samsung but they asked me to do that via the web site. I did that and the Samsung support team (via web site) keep asking me to go to their specific service centre for check up. I then ask them to replicate the issue on their own but they keep insisting to have my unit, most probably to factory reset it. Its a total "merry-go-round" here.
Anyone know how to get it through Samsung?
A bit of update, this problem still exist in the latest ICS 4.0.3
Seems the only cure is to reboot phone...
Sad news. Problem exists with ICS 4.0.4 too.
Hey everyone-The Lg Thrill I have seems to have become corrupt, so that every time it reboots, it's stuck in the same settings and applications. Every time I reset, any applications or files I installed are gone, and all of my settings are reset to the way they were in a past state. I've done the all the resets possible and still no luck. Is there any way to fix this?
Sorry for thread resurrecting. I'm trying to fix my roommates phone and having the same issue. Tried hard reset, factory reset, manually deleting apps, Recovery reset, nothing seems to work, same apps and settings, even on the SD card (yes, I did try to manually remove them via the phone), Once the phone is turned back on (it doesnt reset on its own for some reason) it'll be exactly how it was before I removed or reset anything. In fact, the only thing that DID change permanently was removing the screen lock. I wouldnt really care because it's set up the way he wants it, but it's been having connectivity issues (texts take hours to recieve or notify and phone calls drop out frequently, even in good signal areas) and I'm frequently getting crash errors, usually regarding On-screen, Google Play and USB mode.
My Windows 7 PC doesn't seem to recognize it either, it fails installing the drivers on its own and after finding a legacy LG support tool that supports the Thrill, only recognizes mass storage mode.
If it was me I would try to flash a firmware. If what you have is simply corrupt system or whatnot, doing so would fix that
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2195753
FYI proper driver install (i.e. part one there, the 'tricky' part...) is critical for a good flash.
I'd try that first to see how it goes and take it from there.
And FYI, all the good Thrill info is over in Optimus 3D (P920) section...same device, but Thrill is US ATT branded. I have a Thrill (P925).
Moto G 2nd Gen XT1063 won't connect to my Windows PC after the Marshmallow update. In the past, I would see two folders upon connecting (one of them being the SD card). Now I just see an empty folder, and when I try to copy a file into it, I get the "Cannot copy item - The device has either stopped or has been disconnected" message in Windows.
USB debugging is enabled. I uninstalled/re-installed Motorola Device Manager (2.5.4), but that did not do any good.
Any help will be appreciated.
Note: I f***ing hate this. Whoever rolled this out without properly testing should be fired. I wish I could go back in time to this morning.
OK, here's how I solved this, and hopefully it'll help others:
Developer Options -> Select USB Configuration
In my case, MTP was shown to be already selected (as it should be).
I clicked on the "Charging only" option. This disconnected the device from the PC.
Then I selected MTP AGAIN. That did the trick (there was some driver install message that was displayed in Windows). Then the connection folder showed the familiar "Internal storage" display.
I cannot believe that as users, we have to go through this crap. Shame on Motorola/Lenovo/Google.
Spoke too quickly - it seems the phone loses the MTP setting every time and it has to be set over each time you connect to the PC.
Not exactly the answer to your question, but I was helping a friend who also has a moto g and a similar problem, and after we achieved nothing he just went with Droid Over Wifi as an alternative. Works pretty well imo, more reliable than mtp

Sphynxie, thanks for the link, will try it out.
By the way, I have since learned that this is how it works in Marshmallow:

Appreciate those links, that's some nice insight into Google's continued efforts to make file transfer over usb as awful as possible. IMO MTP isn't worth dealing with. My own phone got updated recently so I also switched to wireless solutions. Unless I happen on a pc without any wi fi access, I won't be using a cable anymore.
Hi Everybody,
I'm trying to connect my Mi5 with my PC using MTP connection (i'm on Ubuntu). The problem is that I can see the device connected and mounted but i can't copy anything from it. It always crashes. Strange thing I can copy files from pc to the device without any problem, but if i try to copy something from the device to my pc it always says " libtmp: Could not get file from device."
I've also tried with windows, but nothing changed. i cannot copy or transfer any type of file.
While googling around i've found that this might be an Android 6.0 related problem rather that a MIUI one.
But i've also tried a possible solution that has been proposed which consists in changing a configuration under developer option and switch it back but it didn't work.
here's the steps i've followed:
Open Settings
Enable Developer options:
Go to About phone (or tablet)
Scroll to the bottom
Tap Build number repeatedly. After several taps you will see it count down and then say "You are now a developer!"
Back to Settings
Tap Developer options, near the bottom
Scroll down to and tap Select USB Configuration
Change it to Charging only
Tap Select USB Configuration again
Change it back to MTP (Media Transfer Protocol)
I don't know how to proceed.
If someone can help me it would be great!

Nope didn't work at all
How long do you have to tap build number?` nothing happens here :/
Edit.
Found it tapping Miui rather than build version, but cant find the USB configuration after being in developer mode.
@zofox I don't have a solution but can confirm the problem.
On WIndows 10 latest release, it's working like a charm.
When I connect the Mi 5 to a Usb 2 or Usb 3 port on Ubuntu (same computer) it does nothing, only charging works.
So that means: I am not sure if it's a problem with Ubuntu, your PC or both!

right now i'm using ftp to comunicate but it's pretty annoying also the fact that i can copy stuffs from pc to mi5 but not the opposite it's pretty strange ...
It might be the USB port(s) in question: check if the port used is on some external controller or part of the PCH/southbridge (i.e. part of the motherboard); next up, try direct ports instead of through USB hubs (if any in between). Other than this, I have no further idea.

Seems like it was a cable related problem ?
Changed it and everything works like a charm ?
Mods can close the discussion ?

First go to settings, then click the option 'about phone'.
Then click on 'miui version' several times until u become the developer.
Then go back to settings and find the 'developers option' in the 'additional settings' .
Afterwards look for the 'usb configuration' option in the 'networking' section.
There select the 'mtp' option
This worked very well for me and solved all my problem
change the cable works like a charm, thanks!! you guys save my semester.
This works like a charm to me. Only one thing I have noticed is, in my phone(Mi5) Developer options comes under Additional settings of systems& Device section.

Thanx bro
I was facing the same issue in redmi note 5 pro.
I had same on Redmi 5 (rosy), my 'solution' was to drag drop down down, tap Android System and change from 'Charge this device' to 'Transfer files'. I was expecting a pop up when I connected the cable to select what I wanted to do, none came.
Hi. I own a LG V40 THINQ Korean . I have been using the device for sometime without any problems until one day I noticed my device could no longer connect to my PC via USB connection, I tried everything to fix the issue including reinstalling all drivers. I also noticed that the USB configuration option in developer options closes immediately I open it (I have attached a video to this effect). Please I need advice on how to solve this issue. Thank you

Sounds like the usb port has gone bad, not unheard of. First I'd try cleaning it with rubbing alcohol and q-tip. Maybe try a can-of-air also. If that doesn't work, you'd have to open it up and replace the usb port.
good luck
(pls don't post same question in 2 places, you won't get an answer faster, and it's just extra work for the mods to clean up).

I have a model V-405QA, rooted. I have developed apps on this phone for over a year. Suddenly, my PC doesn't recognize it. In fact, the Win10 Device Manager doesn't show the USB device at all. I am using the same cables, the same USB port. Power gets through. But nothing else - no data for file xfer, no adb, nothing. And like the OP, when I go into developer options and try to set the USB configuration, nothing happens. I don't even see the flash that is in his screen video - only visual feedback of the item touch. I too am stumped.
PS - I tried plugging in an OTG cable with a thumb drive attached. The drive doesn't get mounted. But I do get a notification that I can tap to change the USB mode. It always comes up as Power Supply. If I select any other option, the dialog goes away but it comes back in the exact same mode.
PPS - I tested in Safe Mode and get the same results. So the implication is that it is not installed apps.
PPPS - After some googling, I see that many, many LG device users - not only V40 - have reported similar issues. This is really no help but displays the scope of the issue.

Thanks. I have not yet done a factory reset and likely will not due to the complexity of my setup.
I have cleared cache and Dalvik without any impact.
It is interesting that when I plug in an OTG cable, I see a notification from Android System app that, when tapped, offers to change the USB mode in a dialog. It is always showing Power Supply as the selected choice. If I choose anything else, the dialog goes away, the notification briefly disappears. But when it returns is shows Power Supply. So it is as-if the system is unable or unwilling to process the choice.
This is different from what happens when I plug into my computer. I see nothing happen at all. This includes having Tasker watch for USB connections and flash a message on connect/disconnect.
Add this to the odd behavior of nothing happening at all when I tap USB Configuration in Developer Options.
I have managed to get logcat records for these conditions and I see that at some level the system "sees" the plug/unplug events. I have seen entries like these:
START u0 {cmp=com.android.settings/.deviceinfo.UsbModeChooserActivity (has extras)} from uid 1000
and
AUTORUN] mStateReceiver() : action=android.hardware.usb.action.USB_STATE
I have looked at the manifest for com.android.settings app. There are tons of them as I would expect. And I do see the named activity. But when I try to start that activity (via various means including the am command in a root shell), I get nothing. When I use the pm command in a rooted shell for find which apps resolve the USB_STATE action, I find these:
com.android.providers.media.MtpReceiver in package com.android.providers.media
com.android.settings.lge.usb.UsbSettingsReceiver in package com.android.settings
com.lge.hiddenmenu.ModelProtocol.LGDMReceiver in package com.lge.hiddenmenu
com.lge.opterator.hiddenmenu.ctc.UsbDetactchedReceiver in package com.lge.operator.hiddenmenu
com.lge.sync.StartReceiver in package com.lge.sync
So it seems like there is code to be executed. But it is not always being done and/or it is having no effect.
Thankfully, I have found work-arounds for most of my needs. I use adb over wifi for app debugging and shell operations, an smb server or an smb client to move files around my network. But this is confounding and it does NOT appear to be the USP port hardware - although I did take the time to clean that out (it wasn't really dirty but just to be complete).

As mine is rooted (from the very start), I cannot say I have hands-on doing this. But I googled "android adb wifi without root" and the first results points to this app (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=za.co.henry.hsu.adbwirelessbyhenry&hl=en_US&gl=US). So might well be worth a try. The other results might also be helpful.

Well that is a catch 22 indeed. Rats! And rooting would require the USB as well (I have not yet tested to see if download mode is working but I have tested to see if an OTG drive can be accessed via TWRP and that seems to fail as well).

Holy smokes! I had considered that perhaps my rooting (and many modifications) were the cause of this problem in my case. Yours makes it clear that either that is not the case or at least there are cases where rooting and such cannot be the cause. I wish I could have been of more help.
At least for file to/from the device, driven from the device, you can employ a File Manager app like X-Plore which provides several means. I use the LAN connection to Windows and other computers on my network with SMB server capabilities. I would not be without it!

Perhaps this is a problem common with LG phones
I also encounter this issue. Tried changing the USB C port to a newer one but it still persists. Hopefully, it isn't caused by a malfunctioned motherboard. I am careless with my phone and I always drop it. Praying this problem will go away after the Android 11 update. LG V50 user here.
Have had this same issue on 2 LG devices now. Tried and Tried all manner of things, but nada. Has there been any solution posted anywhere to share on this? Its honestly hella frustrating

Just had the identical issue on a different variant. Would charge only. Wound up being the USB port.
I hit same issue. Strangely usb-c hub works fine when connected. So I guess hardware is just fine. Looks like some software issue.
Add one more person to this list. Every time I try to change the type of usb connection in developer options, to anything other than photo transfer, which isn't working. The menu blips on the screen and then immediately disappaers before I can select or confirm anything. Without adb this phone is garbage. Trying to hard reset now.

Hard reset does nothing. Junk.
Lg v40 user here aswell, got the same issue, but for mine, sometimes unplugging it or plugging it in the phone will randomly reboot on its own, like a short or something.
Same here (LG Wing), incl. not being able to select USB connection type in Developer options; I recorded the Developer options screen when selecting USB configuration and this is what shortly pops-up -- no clue why exactly MIDI device has to be the default option...
