Madd Tinkerer - Introductions

Stumbled upon the site when looking to take my old kindle fire table out of the amazon jungle and just make it an Android tablet . Work in progress. I have always loved tinkering with things have sent several working items to the scrap heap due to me taking them apart and not figuring out how to get them back together, but somewhere a long the line I learned what to do . Have a mind that thinks way outside the box. Hope to continue my learning and maybe even teach a few on what not to do while here . A curious mind will always seek the answers in the unknown. As always stay curious.

Welcome to the XDA forums!
Maybe some information in the Kindle fire forums:
Amazon Kindle Fire
The Amazon Kindle Fire is a tablet version of Amazon's e-book reader known simply as the Kindle. The Kindle Fire has a heavily modified user interface that doesn't appear to be running an Android OS in many ways. Users have access to an Amazon App store, which includes many apps from the Google...

I have a question

I am looking for a cheap Android Pad like this one but with 3g and at a cheaper price and that has active ROM support. Is there such thing yet? I hope I posted in the appropriate thread I couldn't really see any that related to this subject.

Probably the general q+a section
But about the tablet how much are you willing to spend?

I would like to spend in the neighborhood of $150.00 us for an Android Pad similar to the one in the link.
Avoid that at all costs.
Do not buy a tablet that lacks official Google support. No market/play store, no maps, YouTube, Google talk, gmail or any other Google app. It will not have most of the apps you will want available, and on these devices root is often very difficult to obtain, making getting a functional market/play store onto it will be incredibly time consuming.
Due to their shortfalls, these tablets almost never have an active dev community.
There are 4 exceptions to this: the kindle fire, and the nook color/tablet/touch.

Thank You for your response, I believe you to be right I guess I will have to wait till I can save more money. What would be you and Scoffy"s recommendations ?
well you stated in your first post that you wanted 3g in it. the cheapest "real" tablet with 3g i know of are the Archos G9 series. I don't know your location, but from what I've heard they don/t work with US SIMs, you'll have to look into that if you're in the US.

Rooted nook + Kindle app help

Hello Everyone.
My Wife and I purchased some nook simple touches at the bargain price of £30 each.
Me being me decided that because they where running android, It would be rude not to root them.
I used the NookManager here :Nook Manager Link
and i also used :NTGAppsAttacks
I then proceeded to download the Kindle Apps 'app' from the market place on android and install it.
Unfortunately this Kindle app wont see the .Mobi files that are on the Nook.
I can still read the .epub files which are native to the nook using its own reader... its just i have a good stock of Kindle books on my PC as i used to have a Kindle before my wife decided to end its life with the heel of her foot after falling asleep, dropping it on the floor and forgetting about it.
Any help would be very gratefully received as i would like to continue reading my Game of Thrones book which is in .Mobi format.
Thank you in advance
Not really an answer to your question because I don't have any Mobi files, but I thought I'd recommend the e-ink friendly version of the Kindle app available on this forum.

The interface is much easier to read than the one downloaded from the market.
I will, however, grab a couple of public domain mobi files from my daughter (she has a Kindle keyboard) and report back on whether it works or not. Other readers do work with Mobi but probably not with DRM files. Come to think of it, maybe that's why your GOT book isn't seen by the app.

I've just downloaded a .mobi file from Gutenberg using Dropbox and can confirm that the Kindle app doesn't see it. FB Reader can read it very well, but it is a public domain non-DRM file.
I am not sure kindles are used to side loading DRM content. Try going into settings and looking at the device name. Then, log into Amazon's website and send the files to the device.
That should work. Also, make sure the app is registered with the same account you used to purchase the books.

Android Play Store and films etc in Fire Tablet Child's Profile?

Ok, first of all apologies if this is already answered somewhere, I have looked and worked my way through the beginner stuff but haven't been able to figure out exactly what I need to do.
I have just bought a 5th generation 7" Amazon Fire tablet and I wanted to set it up for my kids. I have a number of apps I've purchased on Google Play and I've got a number of films in .mp4 format that I want to have on the tablet for my kids.
So how do I make this happen? I fumbled my way through getting Google Play onto the tablet and its up and working, but only on an adult profile. Ditto for video files. The apps and video files just aren't visible to then select to add to the child profile.
How do I access apps from Google Play and media files etc in the child profiles?
Now I've come to the conclusion that I'm going to have to go down the root route but the reading I've been doing on here are all dated five years ago or so, I'm guessing things have changed!
Could someone point me either towards a straight solution or an idiots guide to rooting for a 5th generation 7" Fire tablet please? Also, once the rooting has taken place what exactly do I need to do to get up and running?
Thank you in advance!!

Can I teach Android development on Amazon Fire tablets?

I'm a college professor and will be teaching an Android development course in the spring. We will be using Android Studio and programming in Java. The textbook will be Head First Android Development.
When I last taught the course in 2016 we were able to use 2015 Android Fire tablets as cheap development platforms. I don't know how things have changed since then.
Which Amazon Fire tablets can be used as Android development platforms? What needs to be done to them first (such as installing Google Play Services or routing)?
Thanks.
