It’s Friday! - Introductions

Hey everyone, I’m brand new to android and android head units too. I have a 2016 Vauxhall/Opel Vivaro X82 which is the same as a Renault Trafic, Nissan NV300, Fiat Talento depending on where you are. I’m in Northern Ireland.
Anyway, I’ve had this van for 4 years and it has the factory fitted DAB head unit (no nav) which never really worked very well and the Bluetooth support of Apple was crap. I use an iPhone, don’t shoot me!
So, someone showed me an android head unit they have in their car and I thought yes, I need one of those for the van. Sadly, not knowing much about them I bought one from eBay. It’s a vertical screen type which suits the van perfectly. I’ve got it all fitted and working retaining steering wheel controls etc. I’ve a few questions and issues with it I’m looking for guidance with but I’ll do that in the relevant places.
Thanks for looking!

A warm welcome to XDA! I hope you'll always get the support you require. Don't hesitate to contact the moderators team in case of any site related question or if assistance is required; however, for technical support our very knowledgable members are better suited.
And nobody would shoot you. XDA even has an iPhone related forum:
Apple iPhone 12
The Apple iPhone 12 is a 6.1" phone with a 1170x2532p resolution display. The Apple A14 Bionic chipset is paired with 4GB of RAM and 64/128/256GB of storage. The main camera is 12+12MP and the selfie camera is 12MP. The battery has a 2815mAh capacity.

XDA sociolgy report

Hey all, this probably will sound weird but I have to do a sociology report on a community of individuals and I chose the XDA forum. I choose this community because of how the majority of us have probably never have and never will see one another, yet we interact as if we’ve known individuals personally. At least that’s my observation lol. So any information, comments and help is greatly appreciated.
So here are a couple of questions I’m looking to answer.
1. Why and when was the site started?
2. Who started the site?
3. How are admins and mods chosen?
4. (For anyone who chooses to answer) why do you frequent this site instead of others?
Thank you Wroigo

The answer is in the Forum and in the Intro. Some aspects of the devices were not clear and there were no answers from the manufacturers or the carrier brands that put other names on the devices.

I think you better ask this to the Moderators. As some of the questions seem to be private, you better should ask them via PM or interviewing them personally. Remember some of the things here posted lay over the thin line between legal and alegal (I would not say illegal), so some people won't answer to you if they don't know you.

First, I found the best solutions. Now, I began to cook and to share my small experience, so that I think it's my way to give back to the Universe everything I could "obtain" coming to this site.
Thank you Wroigo[/QUOTE]

As for the sociology of Fora, sometimes I think a forum or the Net in general is like a kind of shell, a cocoon if you prefer in which people behave differently than they would if they met face to face. Some will behave in an extremely polite way, constantly apologising fror their lack of knowledge. Others do the opposite, flame , criticise, use rude language and seemingly look for arguments. In other words behaviour shows a wide an often more extreme range of behaviour than in direct contact relationships.
It's very like the difference between how pedestrians behave compared to the way folk behave when driving.. If someone walks past you in the street it does not matter - but if a car speeds past you on the motorway, well that testosterone kicks in and you speed up and try to overtake the son of a gun. And as you re-overtake you may deliver some rude hand signal and the battle is on. (If you and that guy had met as pedestrians you might be all sweetness and light, but in your car, well, your remote, protected and show more violent behaviour. So it is with internet fora, they give anonymous people a shell, a hidden identity from which they can be more rude and agressive than normal or on the contrary more meek and pathetic than normal. Sociologically speaking the internet forum is a safety valve that allows extreme behaviour to go relatively un-punished. What's a ban, well nothing really, there are hundreds of fora, but if I should swear and flame with real people face to face, well, I would be sacked from my job and possibly locked in jail. It is freedom of expression without the normal constraints of societies norms and values. Having said that, a complete free-for-all would be anarchy (look at the Dev and Hacking Section) and this is why at least a little Moderation is needed.
..... and that's what good old XDA-Devs does for you ....

4. (For anyone who chooses to answer) why do you frequent this site instead of others?

Hello from Grenoble - France

Hey everyone,
I've been on XDA since more than 10 years now but had to create a new account.
Thanks a lot for the forums and the job being done since all this time.
I am a big fan of technology and new innovations always amazed but everything going on not only phones but all the tech.
But still my thing is keeping these gems we have running for as long as it is possible.
Been an owner of the first OnePlus back in 2013/2014 ( don't recall the year exactly sorry) lived with me for 5 years.
Kept running on company given phones for a while.
Now running a Galaxy Note 10 a second hand purchased phone which I find actually amazing, battery life aside.
Nice being here, hope I can support in any possible way, even financially if it makes sens.
Best Regards

Sup all...vivid launcher question about using phone data

So I'm using vivid launcher on my Eonon head unit. I want to find a way to use my phone data like Android auto does to gain internet access with it...any ideas?
About me:. I'm just a general tinkerer and poo disturber. Like tech and working on my vehicles. Former aircraft mechanic and current heavy equipment operator for an electrician.

Just started looking through it...a bit daunting with 81 pages of posts trying to find what I'm looking for, but thanks for the info...

Hello from darkest Yorkshire !

Just a line to thank you for accepting me into the group. I'm a retired VoIP engineer, prior to that a Marine Radio Officer in the Merchant Navy although I started off as a Morse Code basher in the Royal Navy at 15...so quite a long time in what they now call IT. I like to keep my mind active so pulling out lots of computer stuff I've collected over the years and getting them up to speed with new SSD and RAM plus the latest W11 OS (with a few hacks) As I get them fettled up they will be going on eBay or Facebook market place so I will finally put a smile on the wife's face, she hates all my 'clutter' Sad to see some of these Sony Vaio's go as I've collected what I thought were the best laptops money could buy but then Sony pulled the plug on support ho hum. I will no doubt be asking lots of stupid questions, bear in mind I'm just a morse basher with a bit of age dabbling in something that interests me!
All the best
Steven Barrett

They sure do, and so do we...that adjustment can be a rough one! From an environment where frequent use of certain four letter expletives is part of the everyday vocabulary, to the "civilized" part of society where such things result in a trip to your not so friendly Human Resources representative.

Odd. I wonder if that was a Cold War thing. Anyway, welcome to XDA, a lot of us (especially the moderator staff like @Oswald Boelcke and @Badger50 ) are 60+ so you aren't so out of place! Never too old to learn!

Also from me a very warm welcome! I commenced to serve my country, NATO i.e. the free world in the Western hemisphere at that time, too. Actually much easier than the times afterwards, which I experienced until my retirement or monitor nowadays. But I think we better don't turn into any political discussions on XDA.

Howdy

So I have just joined the world of Android with a Chinese head unit for my prehistoric old banger.
I have so many questions and I probably won't understand the answers. I have already discovered that what a Chinese salesperson terms as plug and play, is just like a racecar guy saying "yeah it just bolts on" nothing could be further from the truth ! So after remaking the "plug n play" harness with the correct plugs to play with the canbus and the fibre optics I'm here to discover what I have actually purchased and how to Houdini it to my will. The first surprise was I purchased an Android 11 yet in the settings it says its Android 12 after reading so of the posts on here I reckon that's probably BS, yes I do know how search works and yes that's always what I do first only problem is from scrolling through these threads I still have no idea what I actually have as far as screen manufacturer, or software. So go easy on the Old guy, until I know which Mxxxxxxx I have
Welcome to XDA and enjoy the forums information!
