firstly thanks to anyone who helps, I have searched and found some similar queries but not quite the same / not answered.
I did find this in case anyone else is wondering.

Sprite has three restore modes - i cant remember what they all do exactly but it is something like
1. ignore that it is a ROM update
2. Think of it as an update to a newer version of a similar ROM
3. Think of it as a totally different ROM
One of them should work but either way you will have a back up of you texts, email, diary etc. and worst case your can install all your apps/tweaks again.

Anyway my problem is that i upgraded to a new rom over the weekend and had some issues doing a restore. In the end i have my texts/contacts restored and even call history etc which was mainly what i was after. Emails were lost but stored on server anyway.
Question being, my phone thinks its got all the software i used to have installed, ie things like sprite backup which i havent put back on yet. TomTom and various others. They are all in the add and remove list and uninstalling them it says it can and do i want to remove from list, choosing yes, they stay there.
It now seems that i cannot uninstall anything, ie i installed a version of sensor lock which i tried to upgrade today to the latest, the cab installer tried to remove old, it couldn't, neither could I.
Just wondering what went wrong so i can not do the same next time. Also the restore of the emails, it added the accounts to TouchFlow email tab saying x amount of unread emails, but it didnt restore the actual accounts.
Is there a backup and restore guide anywhere?
Thanks in advance
Is anyone else unable to use this on the latest couple of CM builds?
It seems to always force close on me, going to try to get a log and maybe pass it on to the developer of the backup application...
One of my main reasons for not switching builds is because the lack of being able to backup and restore my sms.
I use sms backup and restore.
Works great.
Really great.
5,000 texts backed up to my sd card.
When I want to backup more sms they add to the data file or making more files in the folder.
and I've restored all my texts to three different builds now.
Last back up I did was on a new Dwang build, and for 4k and some odd hundred texts took about 34 minutes to restore in my inbox but it did perfectly.
the author of sms backup is aware of the issue. he's working on it.

Oh sweet, that's excellent - thanks for the heads up. : )
I'm looking into it as well. I'm not sure what broke it yet.
Just found the issue #50 in the google code page. Looking forward to seeing it fixed, one of the most useful (even if never used) features.
Being able to do a quick Google search on your sms messages is phenomenal. = )
I was having the same issue so I was about to contact with the dev but checked here first. Thanks for the advise!
The developer does not run CM, and as such is having a hard time replicating the problem, or getting enough information to figure out how to fix it.
SMSBackup is a must for me, as much as I text. When it broke, I started looking for alternatives.
XArchive is a similar app (based on the same source originally, I think), and it works fine on the latest CM builds. It's a pay app, but it works, so I bought it. No problems. I just couldn't wait for the free app to be fixed.
there is small fix here, works for me:
http://code.google.com/p/android-sms/issues/detail?id=50
An update was pushed today and the issue is now fixed! All is right with the world again!
Did everyone get up and running again with the latest update (1.1.1)? Because I'm still getting FCs, on 4.2.7.1 and 4.2.8, despite uninstalls and a wipe of the phone before 4.2.7.1.
Seriously bummed here, that's one of my favorite apps...
Ugh - of all the things I tried, I missed the most obvious... The folder name is case sensitive. D'oh!
Hey guys, i have a pretty serious problem with SMS messaging. It seems like my Milestone refuses to receive SMS messages. I've been using FroyoMOD and now i have Cyanogen 7 RC3 from kabaldan. With both of them i've experienced this issue. And it's always the same.. after like a month or so from when i flash the ROM..it's happening again. It's really annoying and people are yelling at me for ignoring them So, if anybody knows what's the deal or has experienced the same issue.. i'll be more than glad if you had any suggestions. For now i pretty much think it might be something like kernel-related or whatever.. i don't really know
Thanks in advance and sorry for my bad english.
install advanced task killer, open the sms app, go to advance task killer and uncheck the sms app...with this setting you can receive sms...
forgot to mention that i use handcent or chomp sms..not the stock app. that also might be the problem. i tried rebooting and i don't think i have any task killer that kills my sms app. unless the task killer is integrated w/ the ROM. Anyway, gonna try this.
Got the same problem here and it's driving me crazy.
I've taken a look at the log and you can clearly see the sms arriving, because android is starting the sms app. But it get's killed before it can safe the sms. I believe it's due to a memory shortage. I've tried several different memory management settings and also tried to fix the sms app in memory by adjusting the oom_adj value (see thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1012330)
But nothing realy helped for long. I still loose many SMS also Whatsapp mostly does not notify me about new messages. Push mail works most of the times. Gtalk notifications I'd say work only in 50% of all cases. I'll probably downgrade to CM6. The milestone simply has not enough memory for Gingerbread.
Is your data memory low?
there is a bug when getting lower than ~20mb of free memory,
(last time I ran in that problem was in 2.1, so i'm not sure if releavent to 2.2 and up)
Yes, it's quite low and can possibly be below 20mb at some times. When I look at it it's usually around 30 Mb. I can get more free memory by adjusting the memory manager settings, but that only means it kills background apps even more agressively, or so I understand it.

Handcent seems impossible to run even on stock telus froyo http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=12675946&postcount=13
I'm going to reinstall it and test with minfree values of 6, 8, 26, 16, 16, 32.
Hancent is always in the 4th or 5th slot so maybe that will work.
well i just flashed latest MIUI, sent sms to my number and received it.. i think i had SuperCharged minfree from you zeppelinrox. well i guess it's always the same: i flash new ROM, it works and after some time it stops. what the hell.. the thing is i never used stock messaging app, that might be the cause.
I use supercharge script with aggressive 2...moreover i use advance task killer...i didn't lose any sms...before that sometimes I didnt receive any sms...you have to unselect your app for sms(stock one, handcent, chompsms)...I use stock sms app and everything is working...
Its seems you'be got me wrong, I mean applications data memory, not device ram.

You're right. I got you wrong. I've got plenty of application memory. I've had low applications data memory a few month ago and it took me days to realize taht this causes the phone not to receive any sms. But as soon as you free up memory all SMS seem to be coming through.

by the way, What do you mean by "I've taken a look at the log"?
by the way, just got another problem... seems like everytime i flash MIUI ROM (and maybe any other ROM, idk) and recover my messages from backup with SMS Backup & Restore, the phone sends out by itself like 5 messages always to the same people. It happened like 3 times so far.. and it's pretty much possible that i flashed it 3 times.. but i think that might be more like the sms backup-related issue. The 5 msgs seem to have something like hasn't-been-sent-yet flag or whatever.. seriously, i just feel like throwing the phone out the window right now.
Maybe it's application issue?
I've been using "SMS Backup+" for long awhile (probably since november when I first flashed MIUI)
and never ran into problem.

Is used the Debuger from the Android SDK. When you connect your phone to the computer you can log almost everything with it in realtime.
Btw. I've just migrated to MIUI to try if SMS arrive here more reliably. But I'm not yet sure I like the user interface. It's rather different from CM7.

Thanks man!
you've just open a whole world for me..

You need to install the Android SDK from Google. Since you know adb I guess you allready have it. In the SDK there's a file called ddms.bat. That starts the debugger.
Same stuff here...
I´ve had similar issues relating the sms thingy. I´m going to try that app killer thing to see how it goes.
You may view my post here:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1112009
Hope someone figures out a way out of this.
Thanks.
Possible solution

well i have an observation. after i stopped using all sms backup apps, the problem is gone. and by sms backup app i mean those that backup to gmail, not to sdcard. if you have an app that checks for new sms's and automatically backes them up, then get rid of it.. if you need an one time backup, use SMS Backup & Restore.
like i said, getting rid of automatic sms backup apps did the trick for me.
for the life of me cant find a way to do this, please dont say google sync.
my backup root/pro which worked for me great between GB roms just sits there forever I dont know if its actually working or not but it didnt progress for 2 hours suggesting something wasnt working.
Tried titanium backup which is currently sitting there with spinning circle restoring data, is it just a slow process or is it likely not working?
Any other ideas for OFFLINE transfer of data?
also messing around with ICS it doesnt feel particurly great and even doesnt look much different to gingerbread. I was expecting something like the theming in CM7.2 which I thought was took from ICS.

google sync!!
Did you try using phone-contacts Cm7/9/10 app? You can import/export all your contacts to a file (.vdf extension) in your sdcard and then you only need to push on this file and all your contacts will be restored (working on stock roms, CM7/9/10x roms)
You can also try 3er pary apps as Clickfree
Well it seems it does work it may be a CM to stock issue instead.
The backups done on cm7.2
But do import to cm9. Just fail to stock ICS.
If I remember correctly I couldnt import log from stock GB to cm7.2 but contacts did work.
Reason I dont want to use google sync is 2 reasons.
1 - privacy, dont want phone contacts on gmail.
2 - gmail has 1000s of contacts which I dont want cluttering my phone, I strictly keep the 2 seperate.
Yes, yes, I feel stupid, but I figured I had a backup so... Already searched for a few hours for ways to get Titanium Backup to stop hanging on restore, I've tried everything and I've pretty much given up. I have the files Titanium backup created if anyone knows how I can manually install them.
Otherwise it would be awesome if someone could link me to "Calendar Storage 4.4.2-N900AUCUCNC2". I've scoured the Internet already, and I'm fairly certain it's not online. If someone could pull it off your phone and post it for me, it would save me a ton of time. I might just have to live without a calendar if not, going to have revert to stock to retrieve it and I'm not sure I have the patience. Maybe a backup made with ES File Explorer would work? IDK
Thanks!
I just happen to have a spare Note 3 running 4.4.2, i extracted the apks from it, hopefully one of these solves the problem
Thanks! I'd be embarrassed to reveal how long I've spent today trying to fix this problem, you're a life saver! Definitely not going to put much faith in Titanium Backup again, although it seems to work great for a lot of people.
Hopefully if anyone else has the same problem, they'll stumble upon this thread.
