I have had continuous issues with the Droid 3. One of my biggest issues is that the GPS seems completely unstable. I have tried turning on/off GPS options, etc...
Weather I try to use Google Maps or another application such as Endomondo, it cant maintain a lock. It seems to be able to locate me within 12 - 30 feet and then within a mile!!!
Using an application like Endomondo (running, cycling, etc), is completely useless. It can't track my location at all and when it does lock on, it only holds for a few seconds and then gone again.
I took the phone in to Verizon with a complaint about the GPs and screen issues (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1239980) and the rep said both were normal for this phone...
Has anyone figured out a way to resolve this problem?
I, too, have the same issue with GPS. I use SportyPal Pro, and cannot use my Droid 3 when running/walking. I can go for a 5 mile run, and SportyPal will show I had ran 6 miles. I can run north to south in a straight line, and when finished, SportyPal will show that I went east and west as much as 400-500 feet off of that straight line and because of that can add anywhere from .1 miles to .5 miles to that 1 mile run.
It is so unreliable that I will use my older decommisioned Droid2 to run with. It works perfectly with the same software.
If anybody has any suggestions, I'm all ears.

Are you using it for navigation only? Or a similar application for running/walking?
The reason I ask is because I do not notice a problem during navigation. It works great for that without any problems. Until I get to downtown Chicago. I almost expect problems there. Even with my Droid2.
i've only had issues with my gps in areas with lte. when im at college im in a city with lte support and my gps doesn't work (my friend who has an X also has issues with his gps when in areas with lte). when im home where there isnt lte support my gps works fine.
No it's not hardware mine works flawlessly and almost instantly fixes position, tho i have modded the gps.conf found in the etc folder. Details for tweaking this for your region can be found here:

Since we don't have a recovery yet to flash a zip you will need to edit the gps.conf file manually.

The problem I was having with the GPS from Day 1 is that I would occasionally notice that it would not start up at all when openning a GPS-dependant app (such as Maps or Weatherbug, etc). Whenever that happened, I would have to restart the phone, and then the GPS would be able to initialize again... at least, for a while.
Eventually, I was digging around in the setting and found the "VZW location services" option under "Location & security settings". I unchecked that option and, ever since, I've had no problem with the GPS. It seems that th VZW-based location services were causing the problem. Of course, since then, I've rooted and frozen all of the VZW bloat, so I might be able to turn that option back on with no ill effect. Still, it was as simple enough fix.
My issue might not sound exactly the same as yours, but you could give this a try and see if it helps.

I'm not having any GPS issues on my phone. Perhaps it's based on the area your in?
I know it's satellite but.. just a guess.

I have been experiencing the exact same problem and temporary solution (restarting) since day 1, on both my first and second droid 3's. Difference is, I've had VZW location services unchecked since around the time I first got the phones, and I am still experiencing the problem... even as recently as last night. I just double-checked the setting, and indeed, VZW location services is stil unchecked.
Once I have lock I usually have no problem continuously using GPS. Last night, I tracked a two and a half hour walk using the My Tracks app, including a 45 minute stop for dinner indoors. For the first 10 minutes, it couldnt find a signal, so I restarted. It got a lock almost instantly following the restart and never lost it after that. I had the app running for the whole excursion. As expected, it got a little confused while I was inside, but automatically picked the signal right back up when I got back outside and tracked my entire walk back home.

When you look at your walk on the map, is it true to where you actually walked? If I do that same walk on my phone, it will show me deviating off course as much as a 1/2 block and then back. I can tolerate that deviation once and maybe twice during my runs/walks. However, mine does it the majority of the time, adding bogus mileage to my walks/runs. In an hour's time, it will deviate approximately 20-30 times.

Just took a closer look at the track it recorded. I definitely do see these kinds of deviations, but they seem to only be in areas where I think it'd be reasonable to expect them. I live in a suburb, so I don't have any tall building to mess with the GPS reception, instead, I have somewhat steep hillsides. It seems I get a fair amount of deviation in the (significantly) hilly areas (it looks like I was walking down people's driveways, then across their front yards, when in reality I was just walking more or less straight down the sidewalk), but in the flat areas the line has almost no significant deviations, just some minor noise. Next time, at the risk of my fiance calling me a geek, I'll take my Droid 1 along for the trip, and see how the two records compare.

I've attached screenshots from two runs. D2 is this morning's run with my Droid 2. It's flawless. D3 is the last run I did with my Droid 3. Looking at it you can understand my disgust with it. Ignore the big missing section from both shots. I wouldn't want anyone knowing the exact location of where I live. Someone might come steal my Droid 3.

WOW... That is awful but a great example of the concern with this phone. You are actually doing much better than me. Mine is only able to triangulate down to about 20 feet and then it bounces between 20 and 300 feet!!!
I am going to call VZW today and see about a replacement phone but I doubt it will resolve the problem.
I just called VZW and once again, they said the accuracy was normal... They said none of their phones can lock on with the accuracy I described and if it has, I have been lucky. He said their phones are only accurate within 500 feet!
I explained to him that with that accuracy, it would be totally useless to use as a navigation device...
He looked through their documentation and said he has no record of other people having issues with the GPS... He also said he has no record of the blue tint when taking pictures.....
Oh well. I hope the replacement fixes it...

With that kind of change in accuracy, it seems like it isn't using the GPS as all, but just the cell towers. Is the GPS logo showing in the notification bar when that is happening? If it's there, is it blinking or solid?

My humble opinion of VZW representatives...they're all full of BS. They're going to tell you what they need to tell you to get your out of the store or off of the phone if you're not buying anything. A representative's main concern is sales. Sell him another phone, renew his contract, add a line, add a feature.
This issue may be better addressed to Motorola directly. I may make that phone call today.
I just got off the phone with Motorola tech support. Same story as VZW gives. There are NO known issues with the Droid 3. I asked about the GPS, the bluish pics the cam takes and battery life. The only thing the tech would say is the phone "needs to be evaluated"
Hi all,
I've had my T for a week now after upgrading from an iPhone4. Originally I was eyeing up the 5 and the S3 then I spotted this little underdog that I hadn't even heard anything about. After scouting around for reviews it grew on me and after seeing it in the flesh I was sold and managed to get the last one in the Vodafone store.
I've never had an Android phone before, so I was a bit wary, but so far it is pretty much everything I expected it to be and I am really happy with it...
But I have spotted a few niggles and I'm wondering if other users have had noticed similar issues?
1) Auto brightness seems to jump around randomly at time and makes the phone look like either a. it's struggling to cope with what it's handling or b. it hasn't been implemented right and for some reason jumps between levels instead of smoothly raising or lowering the brightness. This doesn't happen all the time, mostly on the net, but I've also seen it while navigating the OS.
2) The camera is really slow to take any decent images. Quick launch boots to the camera pretty quickly but then it sits there trying to focus for the next few seconds and makes the quick launch seems pointless as it hangs fo so long after it has launched. Also any movement seems to blur the images pretty easily. Took pics of my 3 year old and my wife while we were bowling and even their arms moving as they walked back blurred!? The rest of the pic was great but it's not like they were running past the camera or anything.
3) When using Chrome does anyone else have it duplicate the last letter of every word you type? Alll off myy wordss weree lookingg likee thiss wheneverr II typedd anythingg. This wasn't happening anywhere else on the phone and after downloading FireFox I've got a decent browser, but I'm intrigued as to whether or not it was something I was doing?
4) Whenever I copy a video across I am only able to play 2-3 minutes of it even though it says that the file size is correct. All of my videos are .avi and whenever I try to copy them the phone my PC asks if I want to convert the files so that they are compatible with the phone. When I click yes my PC takes 45 min's-1hr to convert it and the file appears on my phone as a few hundred Mb but next to it the time dislpays 2-3 minutes duration. When you play it it cuts out at the 3 minute point. Is anyone else suffering this?
5) The storage capacity of the handset is only showing up as 10.8 Gb of which 1.08 is reserved space. Aren't these handsets meant to have 16Gb? Those figures are shown through the PC Companion and the settings tab on the phone.
So is anyone else experiencing the same niggles as above?
I still love the phone and I'm more than happy keeping it. I know some of the issues are down to my education but others definitely aren't and they'll end just being qwerks of the phone. If there's any way to resolve them then I'd be greatful to hear your solutions.

That's 10.8GB for the data/storage partition. They left 2GB for app storage only. 13GB total after formatting + OS seems about right.
I have the duplicate letter/word, think it's a chrome thing.

Does anyone notice when playing back recorded videos on the device, there is a weird knocking / grinding sound while the lens is focusing?
I will upload a few videos, you can actually hear the device focusing, might be normal, but, it was never like this with my arc....its apparent on multiple set scenses, with both the UK Generic and UK O2 firmware.
I've not tested video recording yet, but the camera module is very close to the left microphone (the phone records in stereo). I am guessing you can hear camera noise on the left channel when playing back?

#1 try an app called Lux.
#4, try using MxPlayer, not the stock player... Also you don't have to convert the files.
#1, my Galaxy Note was the same until an update. Remember this is a brand new device and the software will get better with time. Apple don't get it right either but that may have been because you were holding it wrong

I'm using MX player and haven't had any problems regardless of what I throw at it (so far).
#5, a trick manufacturers use is to quote storage as 1000 bytes = 1kB, 1000kB = 1MB when the system reports actual memory based on 1024 bytes = 1kB, 1024kB = 1MB, etc so you get less reported than in the marketing specs.

So far:
1) Autobrightness turned off and everything is good.
2) Still not too impressed with the camera. It takes too long to focus and do anything useful.
3) FireFox is still working perfectly compared to Chrome.
4) After deleting all the videos and copying them in from scratch, unconverted, they play perfectly with MX Player.
5) The memory thing makes sense but its a poor sales tactuc on the manufacturers part. In reality the customer is only concerned with how much useable memory a device has where in reality the Xperia T has a third less than you would expect. 1-2gb wouldnt be as bad but thus is over 5gb difference!!

Noticed the camera lag seem slow when taking the pictures but whenever I look back on them they don't seem blurred.
So far I reckon Ive deleted between a third to half of my photos due to blurring.

Might sound a silly question, but how are you taking the pictures?
I ask because I started off using the camera with the screen off and just pressing the camera button (utilising the quick shot feature). In this scenario I had blurry photos and rubbish results half the time.
I changed the camera button behaviour to just launch the camera app and then press it again (or use the on-screen button) and my photos have been good pretty much all the time.
Hold either camera button to focus.. I rarely get any blurry photos

Quickshot seems borderline useless for image quality. But on standard photos after I wait for it to focus, even the slightest movement seem to really blur the image. On other photos it can take that long to focus that you miss your shot.
I've tried taking the ISO settings off auto today to see if that helps.
So far it's the only thing that I feel lets the phone down compared to what you would expect it to be like when you read the spec.

The only other thing I can suggest is there might be a fault with your phone. Do you know anyone else with a T? Do you have the same problem if you take pictures with their phone?!

I'm going to go and have a play with another one in the shop over the next few weeks when I find time just in case it is my phone but some how I just think it's the way it is.
So far it's my only remaining issue but it's not a deal breaker I still love the phone and look forward to JB next year.

Had my Nexus 6 since launch day in the UK, and I started out really liking it, but it's getting more and more in my bad books as I live with it. Wonder if anyone who has one could look over this and tell me if these issues are standard with this device, or whether I need to get onto the network (Vodafone - what a pain)
Reboots - I'm getting a number of reboots. I know this can be app caused, and I'm working through. The main problem is that it requires a pin or swipe to start it booting up, so overnight if it happens, you've got yourself a dead phone till you physically get it going again in the morning
slowdown - I've got a couple of games, one is sky force, that worked well on my note 3, but suffers some terrible slowdown on the Nexus. No idea why this would happen with a better processor
not connecting to 5g on the router - my router has a 2 and 5 g aerial. It works fine on the 2 g, and every other device works on the 5g, but the nexus just will not connect.

I've had smartphones for many years, and I'm used to their foibles, like battery life and apps that cause reboots, but this is probably the most difficult phone I've had to live with!
I love the screen, the hugeness of it is just what I want, and the sound is great.
I'm getting the crashes, primarily when using the camera, doesn't reboot just stops, 3 times in a few minutes on more than one occasion. Sometimes won't connect to home WiFi without a restart. Start up is very slow. Don't suffer from the other issues. I'm on O2 4G.

could be a faulty phone or rom ... I've had mine for a month now and no problems so far and great battery life

This is actually looking a lot like it may be a software defect. For now, the best solution (i.e. temporary, until 5.1 comes out later this month) is to run the phone withOUT encryption. There are lots of threads around about the minor boot partition change needed to accomplish this.

Two reasons;
1) is that despite the better processor, anything I/O heavy will take a lot of CPU power to just handle the crypto. Hopefully, this is something that will be solved (hwcrypto) with 5.1.
2) android 5.0 has some major changes in the runtime -- ART vs Dalvik. If the application developer broke rules in building the software you are running, then it is possible that it won't work optimally on ART. Hopefully, the application developer can adapt.

Works for me....?
Try a router with OpenWRT.
If I remember correctly, some of the OLDER 5G 802.11AC chips used in a lot of routers, like TPLINK Archer C7v1, which has a Qualcomm Atheros QCA9880-AR1A had hardware that was a bit rushed to market and failed to meet a number of the AC specifications. So if your router is such an AC, then the hardware that is working with it may be using 802.11N (older tech), whereas this phone is trying to negotiate an 802.11AC link with it, and failing. So there is a good chance that the problem is actually on the ROUTER's side, rather than the phone.

There are *two* ways to deal with orientation in jpg images; one is to write the image to the file "upright", the other is to write it to the image file as it comes from the buffer, and just give it an orientation flip flag. The software you are using *may not respect* the orientation flag.

I'm actually finding the battery to be quite phenomenal on this device. With low-moderate usage, it will actually go for TWO ENTIRE DAYS on a charge. Usually to get that kind of battery life, I have to apply very invasive controls against google services to prevent them from setting alarms and holding wakelocks.
However, if you have the screen on high brightness and actually turned on a lot, do remember, the screen is ENORMOUS. It takes power to light it up.

I had to check that to verify, and confirm it. That appears to be a bug in the camera application. Try a different camera program for now, and hope that 5.1 fixes it.

Might be software crypto, mine isn't encrypted, and literally boots right up to the unlock screen in about 10 seconds.
I've had smartphones for many years, and I'm used to their foibles, like battery life and apps that cause reboots, but this is probably the most difficult phone I've had to live with!
I love the screen, the hugeness of it is just what I want, and the sound is great.

Well, the SIZE is almost certainly what is causing you battery life issues. The rest of it is basically because you are running an early version of a MASSIVE system update and simultaneously riding on new hardware that brings in its own batch of *software* bugs. There are some bugs in it that need to be worked out, and hopefully, the majority get worked out with 5.1. There *are* google-private 5.1 builds for Nexus 6 already, so it is just a matter of waiting for them to complete QA and ship it out.

Found a fix for the 5ghz router issues on the Google forum.
Apparebtly the nexus favours the American 5g channels... So I've set it to 36 and 40 and its working well! Yey.
Tomorrow I'll try a cache wipe to see what else I can correct before the update.
I don't know how much longer I can put up with Samsung. I've been with them since the note 1 and it's so bad now. Everything from poor software to faulty hardware. GPS seems like its never worked correctly, no matter what they do. Updates cripple their phones. Their camera has certainly gone backwards in quality since the note 4 camera. The phone is lagging and slow always. Even in safe mode. The battery life is 3 hours at best, which is unacceptable. They force updates now, like Microsoft. They bundle things that you can't remove like facebook and instagram, but make you separately download their media players? That's backwards. The reception is horrible compared to other phones. Wi-Fi drops all the time, even next to my router. It has to warn me every single time I plug in headphones that it could damage my hearing. It has to notify me every single time I open the camera that location is either on or off. Charging is slow. Games shudder and lag no matter what I do. I can remove huge, useless apps like facebook. I can't root because of the locked bootloaders. I can't ever quickly see my new facebook messages because it has to now group multiple notifications and there is no way to turn off the "open chat heads" nonsense. The only thing mine doesn't do is over heat it seems like. That green battery ic9on update with the ultimate new UI completely compromised my Note. T-Mobile won't take it back without paying $50 either.
Samsung seems to have turned their backs on what their actual fans want in favor of being an iClone. Why does every single app and menu have a search bar now? Annoying. The drop down menu and notifications have severely dropped in quality since ICS. Does anyone else feel this way at all? It took me a long time to swallow my pride and get the note 2 way back when. Now I regret that I did. I can't find a way around these issues and no one will help.

My 2 day old, 5a with 5g just overheated. I have no case on it and it wasn't charging at the time. I was in a FBM video call and at about the 30 minute mark, I got the overheating warning. A few minutes later, the phone froze for about 60 seconds and then resumed. The phone was very hot to the touch! Ironically it was propped up against a laptop screen that was in hibernation mode and there is a table fan approximately 8 inches from the device blowing directly at it.
I reported it to Google Support and 1st level was very understanding. 2nd level told me to try some tips that he would send me because I was probably just overusing it. I told him I was using it exactly the same way I used my 2xl, but that didn't seem to make a difference.
I'll keep this updated as I continue to use my new "hot" phone.
Interesting. There's a known issue with recording 4K video, but this is the first time I've heard of an issue just streaming video.

I have not tried the video recording at 4K...but I have been streaming YouTube videos and no overheating for me. YMMV
I have experienced the overheating issue while using video recording at 60 fps 4k. The phone didn't seem warm at all though so here's hoping it's just a software fix Google can implement.

Use H.265/HEVC format" makes it better or worse?
I only had a heat issue when I first started my 5a, and it was installing all my apps in the background. Building the cache is notorious for its CPU use, so I can't say I'm surprised by overheating then. I've done a couple 5 minute 4k 60 videos without overheating since then.
I noticed the same thing today on my new Pixel 5a. Wasn't doing anything other than participating in a Whatsapp video call and browsing text messages.
I do have a Spigen case but the ambient temperature was low 70's inside.
This could be concerning...

I had a similar heat issue when setting up my phone the first time as well. It was when I was just going through the setup, and transferring everything from old phone to the new one. I, unlike you, have never experienced the heat build up, that occured with this phone, on any other phone in my many years of flashing ROMs and setting up phones (unless I was flashing it multiple times due to issues). So, this post does leave me a bit concerned....
I hope once I get my case that this doesn't start occurring for me.
I have experienced the video camera causing the over heating. It appears that any app using built in video recorder will produce the heat. Google camera, Duo, … Zoom. I did a little searching before checking here on xda.
Google admits that the issue is with the 60 bpf 4k recording that is the cause. And of course they do not have a fix available at this time.
I was hoping to find a way to lower the setting to 30 bpf but I cannot locate a way to change the setting. Can anyone help with that please? Or is it possible to install a different camera from the play store with custom video settings, and set that as default for all video?
Edit: I use the system wide dark mode, so I didn't see the camera drop down arrow which opens the settings popup. Open the camera, select video mode, touch the drop down arrow at the very top center of screen. The default setting for Frames/Sec is Auto. The other 2 options are 30 bfs and 60 bfs. Select 30 bfs. Touch outside the popup to dismiss.
I left the resolution at Full HD which is the default. Most users report the issue is while using 60 bfs at 4k.
My wife, who is traveling in another section of the country, also reports over heating. She was not actively using any app when the heating issue occurred. After rebooting the device she saw that the WebEx Meet app was attempting to connect in the background. A persistent silent notification was displayed in the notification tray. This app was one of many that she had transferred from her old device to her 5a during the initial setup process. I told her to uninstall that app. Then review all apps and remove any not needed. Probably should do the same as I have not looked at which of them may also be outdated and needlessly using system resources.
Grr, time for an update. I've had the overheat warnings every few days, but no noticeable effects from it. Until today!
I was in a long video call, maybe an hour or so and got the warning. Shortly after that, the phone shutdown. It was not charging at the time, battery was at 51%
I contacted support and they listened to my complaint and asked all the same questions as last time... except for the new question to confirm that I bought it from the US Google Store (I did of course, but not sure why they would ask that). They said a specialist will contact me via email within 2 days.
Having this issue as well. Shut down the phone for 10m and still got the issue when I powered on.

I had a 5a for about 2 wks. I was in Facebook video chat for about 15min when overheated and dropped internet connection. I was holding phone in hand parked in car 80 degree day. I had one day left to return it, so I rma'd it. No way to report hardware problem as reason for return. Charged me $35 restocking fee. I loved the phone, but they need to solve this. If they fix it, I may buy again.
The phone overheating at all is unacceptable. I've never even personally seen/felt a phone "overheat". That's crazy.
Obviously some kind of defect that google will ignore for 1 year as per protocol.
I've only had my 5a 3 days so far but mine has yet to overheat. And I'm a heavy user. Now my OnePlus n10 after the android 11 update would overheat multiple times a day, sometimes when just sending a text. When it was on Android 10 it never overheated.
Im starting to have those issues too. I cant record for more than 1 minute sometimes
Was this solved in the new update? I havent updated due to root, so just wondering.

Unfortunately no... I'm still getting the overheating after the update.
This happened to me initially, like one user mentioned, when I got the phone and it was building the cache. More recently this happened to me while on a Caribbean vacation to Anguilla; was using the phone for pictures outside. It never got hot enough for a general overheat error, just always warning me that the camera was too hot and flash was disabled, or at one point camera was too hot when I was taking video and said the video could be unstable. I was filming in 1080/60. Switched to 1080/30 and it was ok. I have a Spigen Tough Armor case, so I wasn't surprised at that.
UPDATE: The phone finally died. I had been receiving the overheating issue about once a week since the beginning. Google support didn't care. Now, while I'm travelling in a foreign country, the phone died.
I called support and they said as a 1 time deal, they will replace it free of charge. However they only ship to the US and I have to send back this one in 14 days. That is an issue because mail from here takes months sometimes to reach the states. I"m not due back in the states until this summer.
WORST part: the password safe app that I use on my phone unlocks with my fingerprint. Never requires the actual password, so SHAME ON ME, I forgot that password. I have the password app on my laptop and it has current info, but I can't access it because I don't remember the actual password. :-(
PSA: use your actual password from time to time to ensure you don't forget key passwords!
