SM-G977U root, its on G977UVRS8GVB1 now, still possible? - Samsung Galaxy S10 5G Questions & Answers

Hey folks,
So my S7 has finally come to the end of its life, and I'm looking to get an updated phone that is still rootable. Decided on the S10 5G since it has wireless charging, an sdcard slot and what I'm assuming is ability to root, but the phone I got is a G977U and bootloader unlocking is missing from the developer menu.
Some options here, maybe. Is it possible to flash to a lower firmware, or perhaps another version of firmware via Odin, maybe a Korean version or another that gets me to an unlocked system? Or should I return the phone and look for a different version of the G977? If so, which one should I be looking for? I see B,N,P,T and U variants of this phone, which one is truly unlocked and rootable?
Sorry for asking what is probably the millionth time its been asked, but I've literally spent the last 5 hours searching XDA and other sites for an instruction sheet on rooting this one. Have had every phone up til now rooted and just can't live with a phone that doesn't have it now!

Never mind, after spending all this time, I find that it does in fact NOT have a damned sdcard slot. Now back to looking for a new phone with a card slot...

[Q] A few questions regarding GT-N7000

So I bought the Galaxy Note international for my wife for her birthday. I full well knew that I wont be getting any official support from Samsung US. Those people are so incompetent anyways that its not really a loss. So I have a few questions for those of you who are using this device in USA.
1. Have you guys in US gotten the ICS update yet?
I ask because I am getting conflicted information everywhere.
2. If the hardware is international version, why does the country matter?
Very confused about this. I thought the good thing about having international version is that I wont need to wait for ATT to get off their backside to release updates.
3. Is there any way I can make my device simply talk to German or Indian servers to get the update?
I have rooted android devices before, so I am no stranger to the process. I would rather not do it on a device I am not using, simply because I want to keep getting official updates, without having to keep up with news on the device. So rooting to German ROM is the option only if Samsung has its head up its arse and update doesn't arrive this year at all.
Thanks for your help guys!

Your beat bet is to get a device from a region where ics is already released. It doesn't matter what country you're in, only if the country your device is from gets ics I believe. Not only is the updates better than ATT but I specifically got it for the hardware/ devs
Sent from my GT-N7000 using XDA
Thanks for the reply man. How do I find out what region the device was made for? It came with what I believe Russian documentation. Is there any way to know 100% sure? Using some serial number or something like that?
I want to say you can tell by the stock Baseband version that phone has, but I'm not 100% sure. Where did you buy this Note from? Amazon sells Brazil and Germany based ones for the most part I have heard. I bought mine on eBay and I THINK it is Germany, but not sure totally and I'm already custom and everything.
On the other hand, there might not be a way to tell what country you are on and how to get updates since you live in the states. I'm in the US too on ATT but ATT will have nothing to do with this Note. (They couldn't even recognize the IMEI number when I went into the store when I first bought it). Didn't know about the different model Notes until I got home and looked on XDA.
Andrew, I am on ATT as well but as my wife doesn't need a data plan (Wifi available everywhere we go), ATT doesn't even know that her line has a smartphone. Else they would push a useless data plan on us. Also, I got it from a third part seller at Amazon. Those people were as useful as a stick. Asked them where they get their stock from and never heard back.
If there is a way to find out country of origin, I would like to know. I've spent countless hours doing research on this, and for the first time, I have not been able to figure out a cellphone problem.
Also, I take it you already got your ICS update if your phone is German?

No, I didn't do an OTA update or Kies. I just PC Odined ICS, but now I'm on a CM9 build. If you are comfortable flashing and stuff, I would say just use PC Odin.

[q] n7000ubkk1 version ota ics update question...

Hello friends. I have a simple question to ask. I am on At&t and up until recently was using the 717, however, being the android fanatic that i am it just wasnt good enough so i had to go out and buy a brand new N7000 off of ebay to see what all the fuss was about. Within the first day i knew immediately. Much smoother and more fluid then the 717. Who needs the LTE anyway right i mean wont be anywhere near me for awhile so just a wasted feature as far as im concerned. Anyways the baseband version is N7000UBKK1. Im on Att and the phone was new and unlocked when i purchased it. My question is how exactly will my phone be upgraded to ics under these set of circumstances? I know that samsung and att are working on an ics release for the 717 but what happens with my phone. Im not a noob by far as ive been doing this awhile and just cant seem to find any answers. Trying to stat away from the custom roms and leaks but will that be my only option. Any advice will be greatly appreciated and thanks in advance.

Hello Jack, my N7000 had the same baseband and though I live in Venezuela, a few weeks back I only had to connect my note to Kies (this is the one I installed: Kies_2.3.2.12054_18_2) it downloaded and installed Stock ICS without any issues (even when my phone was rooted).
Hope it works for you.
Regards.
Kies ota update
Thanks for the advice however i have registered it on my computer through kies and was unsuccessful in finding an update. Upon setting my phone up for the first time on the network i got a system message saying that it was registering and then after it was done i noticed that at&t was branded onto the device. Had a little problem setting up the new apn but now everything working well. As you said though your device has already been updated through ota officially maybe this is somehow connected with the carrier your device is registered to. Being that mine wasnt technically designated to att because they had a different version of the model will mine now be left out in the cold because of this.

Thats odd. As your my device is unbranded/unlocked, but never got "branded" after network registration, I work here with Movistar (a Telefonica subsidiary). Never got an OTA update, no matter how many time I checked for it and on june 11th, I plugged the phone to my PC opened Kies and it showed an update avaiable.
I think yours should also be able to get the update. Regretfully I can't try for now since I'm running Paranoid v0.4
Hope you can solve this easily.
Well i will certainly look up that software version for my note. I may or may not be running the same kies version that was previously installed with my at&t note so that may be my problem. From what you were saying there is no network logo on your lockscreen or drop down menu? I did notice that when i first turned my phone on it was set up in spanish along with all the included included accessories so it does make sense that this would be the south american version. Accordingly what version of the official ics update did you get? Would there be any potential problems with me doing a manual flash of this rom that you can forsee. All that talk about the infected ics roms and kernels has got me really worried about flashing anything unofficial ics wise but i am an impatient man when it comes to waiting on these sluggish carriers to release updates. With att there is no telling if youll ever see an update. Please provide me with the official version of ics that is designated for my version and i will flash it. Thanks
I'm actually having the same problem. I bought mine from the UK Amazon (I'm from the UK as suggested) and mine seemed to have been imported from Spain because it came in a Spanish box. The supplier was Samsung and many people had reviewed the product. I just don't seem to be getting an update for my phone. I've waited and waited, and now I'm hearing people are being updated to Jellybean :/

[Q] Should I grab a GS6 from somewhere else?

Hello forum,
Like many of you I received my Galaxy S6 yesterday. After turning it on I naturally check the XDA forum to see if anyone had obtained root. I didn't realize that root may not even be possible, not to even mention custom ROMs. I wanted to know if it would be advisable to go and buy the T-Mobile version, should I buy an internationally version, or should I wait and hope the boot loader can be unlocked? I really miss Cyanogenmod on Samsung device for a true super Nexus experience like how my GS3 was. Unfortunately, I bought the GS4 and had my boot-loader locked down so the best I could do was Safestrap and the Google Play Edition Rom by Joe-Tech, but I still long for the feeling of the device truly being mine. Another concern is that anytime I had a real issue with the phone, like if I bricked it, or if the charging port stop working I could take it to the AT&T device store and just get a new (Samsung refurbished) phone. My 14 days are ticking away and I don't know what to do, I would really appreciate if some forum members could point me in the right direction. I signed up for the Next program with AT&T at Best Buy when I got it, so how would that be effected if I returned the device. Also, how do I use the menu key, if I hold the Recent key (the menu key) it just the multitasking window?
Thanks,
N7spaceuser
Bump.
Buy the unlocked version. SM-G920I. You can find it on eBay, thepowersellers.com, and a couple other places. Works perfect on AT&T, LTE and all. Unlocked bootloader, no bloat, faster updates, no AT&T bs. What are you people doing buying from AT&T?

Can I get VOLTE on an unlocked N9 on Verizon?

SquareTrade just replaced my Verizon locked N8 with an unlocked one. I found out that VOLTE did not work on the unlocked one, and have been through the research about using IMS settings, and then having that option die with Pie. Working with ST has been a nightmare and I need a working phone, so am looking hard at an N9. I know the N10 is coming out soon, but that has turned into the iNote with no expandable memory or headphone port, so I'm not really interested in it.
I have been offered a brand new USA N9 unlocked for a reasonable price. But I believe I'd have the same issues with it that I'm having with the unlocked N8, that I would not be able to use VOLTE, wifi calling, video calling, etc. So the first question, is that assumption correct?
I've been searching these N9 forums, and don't see an easy way to get those functions back. I used to root and flash my phones as a matter of course. But I've gotten away from that with the 7 and 8 series Galaxy phones, and really don't want to go back. Knox bit tripping, more difficult updates, missing functions, etc. So am I missing something as far being to get VOLTE on Verizon enabled on an unlocked N9?
I'm assuming it's a U, but don't know for sure. Would the method used to flash the phone compromise the 0x0 Knox status?
EDIT: I just confirmed it is a 960U.
Thanks
Links please? I appreciate it.

For which phone? I was going to write up a how too but I don't know if you have the n8 or n9.

I ended up getting the N9 after testing it with my Verizon SIM and finding it does work for VOLTE w/o having to flash anything. It is a U, but not a U1.
So a guide for the N8 would be awesome! Thanks again.
jd14771 said:
so, assuming that the note 8 is a SM-N960U1, you can flash it to be a N960U be following the following guide i just wrote for another member. The only difference will be to skip step 5 and ignore step 6. that guide is for a N960F. (note 9). supplement step 6 in that guide for this one.

Thank you! It'll be a few days until I get my replacement N8 from Squaretrade, so that I can try it.

Will do. I have the firmware downloaded and unpacked. And I've used Odin before.
Another question. Will I be able to take the normal Verizon updates once finished?
It'll be at least another week getting the replacement phone, probably closer to 2. Squaretrade sent it to the wrong address, where nobody is currently at. So now we're waiting for FedEx to attempt delivery 3 times, hold it for 5 days locally, and then send it back to ST. And then we'll start a new claim. ST has just been awful to work with. Nice on the phone, after the always 10-15 minute hold times. But they have a very poor "say to do" ratio, especially when it comes to getting addresses right, or calling back if we get disconnected, even though they ask what call back number to use, in case that happens. I'm glad I have the insurance on the phone, but you need to be ready to be w/o a replacement phone for a LONG time with these folks.

Thinking of buying V40. Custom font and other questions

You can get a used v40 in supposedly A grade condition now on eBay for just under $200. Seems like a good deal. Is this phone still a good buy? Big OLED screen with great audio. I'm going to take a huge hit in battery life though because on my previous phone xiaomi a3 I got 12 hrs screen on time, easily.
I read through the various threads and I'm resigned to the fact that I'm unlikely to be able to root this phone. There is one thing I must have, though: to be able to change the system font, specifically to Google Sans, i.e. a font I sideload and not one of the sanctioned fonts you get from the LG store. Is this possible to do without root?
Also, can I update the firmware with the one on LG's website or does it have to be the firmware from the carrier?
Thanks
PS the phone is it originally a Sprint phone but is now supposedly unlocked

Im not sure what you mean but there is a way to root and must be on pie but youll need to use qfil from qualcomn. In terms of firmware since yours is sprint youll need to update it in the phones software update check or kdz by checking your phones carrier website. LG's page is only up to date for their us unlocked phone only

Which thankfully can be crossflashed onto the Sprint variant...but there would be no way of going back to the Sprint edition of the ROM.....so if that's important to them than as you said OTA all the way....
