So I used to use DrX on my Tab S4. I could hook HDMI up t my TV (I have an older dumb TV with a Chromecast, and AFAIK, DEX does not work with Chromecast), and have the DEX desktop on my TV, but the android desktop on my tablet. I could watch a video on the TV, but have the tablet as a trackpad or read a book on Moon+.
With the Tab S8 Plus, I hooked it up the same way, but got screen mirroring in DEX. This is the worst of all worlds! At least if it was an extended desktop, I'd have extra workspace. But it was mirroring? And I don't see a way to turn mirroring off?
Can anyone help me get back to either extended DEX displays or better the old Android on tablet and DEX on TV?
Thanks,
Joe
OK, I answered my own question: I read about 6 webpages and watched three videos, to finally find out that to have separate desktops (tv DEX, tablet Android), you need to enable "Start DEX on HDMI Connection". Then when you plug it in, it opens separate desktops: DEX on the monitor; android native or trackpad on the tablet.
How intuitive is that?
Any other quirks with DEX?
Thanks,
Joe
Thank you for posting the solution!

Does anyone know if it's possible to basically "stream" the screen to a projector? I'm thinking of an app that would have a server running on the desktop PC, where the Nook would wirelessly connect to that PC and display the screen of the Android on the projector.
Does anyone know if this is possible, or if there is an "app for that"?
i dont think the nook is suited for that kind of activity, you would need something like the droidx, which has a mini-hdmi output, then you can get an app to mirror the screen.
im not really sure of the benefit of streaming an android screen to a projector when the whole computer is there available to you? if its an issue of video content, there are a lot of other solutions that would work, if nothing else, a usb cable to mount the nook and access the video files through a desktop application
I think there are vnc servers for Android phones. If you need this for any video, it'll probably suck.
The main use case is for during a presentation, to be able to see the slides as they are shown on the projector, and potentially see the notes and such. It would be a super bonus to be able to make notations/drawings, etc., during the powerpoint if that's possible.
a more hardcore solution
not sure if this would help, but I came across a similar problem where I was doing a presentation so I wrote an air app for my galaxy tab, and one for a mac running a projector and used the netconnection and netgroup classes to send position and navigation data from one to the other. Have a look at the RTMFP protocol
Will it be possible at some point to use Chromecast as a gateway to use the TV as second independent monitor, rather than a mirror of the laptop/desktop with a browser extension, maybe in conjunction with Ultramon?
I have Ultramon installed in my laptop. When I turn my iPad into a second monitor using an app like AirDisply, Ultramon immediately picks it up as the second monitor and provides all the functionality for a second monitor - position, resolution, task bar, etc.
Can I achieve something similar with Chromecast + Ultramon, if not now in the future?

No the CCast wouldn't do that since it would be a waste since the CCast connects to the same network the Android device does so why send it to CCast when you could send it to the Device directly.
CCast does however act as a second monitor for Android and other devices...

Future, maybe, but the 1-2 second lag from having to compress the video (and Chromecast having to decompress it at the other end) would be annoying at best.

Oh... I never noticed any annoying lag when I use iPad with AirDisplay. I guess iPad has lot more processing power than Chromecast.
AirPlay is designed for screen mirroring and hence low latency. The current methods of Chromecast desktop mirroring essentially make the desktop a video stream first.
Likely this will change once they're screen mirroring is implemented by devices.

I'm telling you. With AirPlay, there is more than mirroring. You can use the iPad as a second monitor. It works perfectly with Ultramon.

Yes, and screen mirroring/output isn't the core intent of Chromecast, and I'm not sure screen mirroring will ever make it to iOS for Chromecast.
Long story short, we all can want Chromecast to be more than it is and it's growing steadily, but there will be limits based on its core design.
Thinking about it more... I think Google could (and probably is) making the screen mirroring similar to how RemoteX works in Windows - instead of sending a picture of a red box, send a command to draw a red box - much less data and identical result as long as both source and Chromecast share the same drawing language and techniques. Definitely possible for Android-Chromecast, not sure if/how it could be implemented outside of code that Google owns though, including Windows as a source.
Apple has a definite advantage there as they can make sure iOS, AppleTV and MacOS all share a common drawing implementation.

Problem is, can't use computer when full screen for other tasks
You cannot use the computer screen for anything else when using Chromecast. thios would be a win win
Anyone up to the task?

This sounds incredible!!!
Nice ROM!
This Project is just great and now Open Source ! Would like to see a Build on our N6...
:fingers-crossed:
As a linux power user, I don't find this to be particularly exciting or useful.
What would be, would be open source multi-window multi-display ANDROID.
We can already run xorg as an android application, so if you want that, you just run it in your add-on second display. Makes "Maru" pretty much meaningless.
Can you explain a little more what you mean by add on second display

You know when you have a laptop and you plug a second monitor into it with an HDMI or DP cable?

I'm doing this now by Using a micro USB MHL mini hub with a USB, HDMI and a SD Card reader, I than have a 4 port USB hub to increase the number of USB ports connected to that. Connected to these hubs are a monitor, mouse, keyboard, HD, Intuos Wacom drawing board (yep it works) and a AIO HP Laser Printer in which even the scanner works. Than using the fantastic app, "Second Screen", I change my desktops DPI to 240, which makes it look more like a traditional desktop OS and extend the desktop, instead of just mirroring, allowing me to use the Nexus 6's display along side a Samsung 24" 1080P monitor.
Since I'm now using Android N, I also have access to multi-window support, in which I enabled floating windows, a hidden feature in Android N. Which means my desktop system, again looks and feels like a normal desktop OS with apps in a individual windows.
This is extremely easy to do. I can't wait for a Chrome OS build though, now that Android has been integrated so I can have a proper desktop experience. Android only view when being used as a mobile and than Chrome OS when docked.

I'm calling BS on this. Unless I am completely mistaken the Nexus 6 does not even support MHL so this configuration you brag so openly about is either a total lie, or you are not running a Nexus 6.

I also call BS on those claims because the Nexus 6 doesn't support Slimport/MHL so I don't see how that would be possible.
I have a Nook Tablet running @amaces AOSP 7.0 and my husband has an HD running CM 11. The "cast" feature, as far as I can tell, does not seem to do anything. It doesn't see my Win 10 laptop and does not see a generic Miracast dongle I just picked up (the Win 10 PC does see the dongle...).
Does the cast feature support Chromecast? If so, what's the experience like? The main reason my husband's HD is still on CM 11 is to maintain functionality of the HDMI out. But we've run into issues with our local newspaper app (of all things) after an update and are now looking at trying the last CM 13 build to support HDMI out.
It would be simpler if the cast function worked (I.e., cast the entire screen) as well as the really simple HDMI out. I get it, people don't like wires. But for the price (now $10 online at B&N), that cable is pretty sweet.
So...what works for whole screen casting? We don't have smart TV's and don't use any streaming services. 90% of the video material is local, played with either MX player or Kodi. Occasional streams via Kodi.
I added an entry in the FAQ addressing some of these concerns.

Yes, full screen casting definitely wants a Chromecast receiver. I think it works pretty well, especially for static content; highly dynamic content might have slight delays, or out of sync audio. Movies should be fine, but really, you should send video, YouTube, etc using in-app casting, so all A/V processing is done on the receiver (rather than full screen re-encoded on tablet).

While full screen casting works, for the above reasons, it's always better to use in-app casting, if available. Even with local content, finding an app that processes only the actual media (rather than capture/encode entire screen) is usually preferable. I looked at HDMI intermittently, but no idea what's broken yet.
Could someone maybe assist. I received the latest update and everything is working fine. When pulling down from the top on the quick toggles I discovered a quick toggle that says TV Remote. Anyone one else noticed it? When opening it it says searching for devices and just stays searching. Has anyone gotten it to work? I searched in settings for the tv remote, but can't find anything
You have a Samsung TV?
I have 2 Samsung smart tv's
I have figured it out. It's for Android tv's. I have 2 of them and you pair the tablet with the tv and control certain features of the tv

Or use smart thing app. I use that app to use my Samsung phone as a remote for my Samsung TV with tizen OS.
