Can't reboot from "WebOS restore" mode - TouchPad Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I accidentally booted my HP Touchpad to the moboot USB connection mode, but I can't reboot or even power off from there.
I installed CM about 10 years ago... I don't remember what version: CM9 or what. I do know that WebOS remains on the system for dual boot. I haven't booted the device for years. I powered it up this morning, booted to CM, and tried to run the Google Play Store. My Google password has been changed since last used on this device. I entered my current PW to log in, but it insists that it is the wrong password even though I know it is correct. I rebooted but then, as I said, accidentally selected the WebOS restore item.
I connected to my PC, and it beeps like it detects the connection, but there it does not list the device in File Explorer or in the System Tray.
All that I related may not have caused the inability to reboot or power off from the USB connection, but better too much into than not enough, right?
I'm hoping it is something simple. It has been so long since I went through the procedure to install CM or even use the device, I may be missing a simple trick. I hope.

The problem solved itself. Since I could not turn off the device, the battery eventually ran down. I charged it and booted OK. Turns out it is Android version 4.0.4. That is CM9, I think.
For the record, is there no way to get out of the USB connection mode if needed? If not, that seems kinda flakey to me.
I am still having the problem logging on the Play Store. I was able to update my password for Android on this Touchpad, but when I attempt to start Play Store, it prompts for my password again, but does not accept it. Says not the right password.
I think I may, some day soon, replace CM9 with a later version. I hope that will solve the Play Store problem.

The Tablet can be " hard reset" or force reboot, just like any other device.
If The Tablet is not responsive in any Operating System or Recovery just reset it by:
Hold at the same time the following 3 keys:
Power Key + Volume Key ( closer to Home button ) and The Home button.
Hold until the Tablet turns off and then it will power on.

Question. I bricked my touch pad.

I bricked my touchpad.
First I installed cm7 alpha 3.5
It seemed working fine except wifi.
It got connected but once I rebooted it, it dropped the signal.
It ketp scanning the wifi signal so I just decided to install cm9.
I downloaded cm9 and put it in a folder named install.
I booted into clockworkmod and wiped data and all caches and flashed it.
Guess what?
I rebooted and the screen is just black.
I can see there is backlight but nothing comes up on the screen.
I just let the battery drain for a couple of days, and charged it.
still same thing. nothing comes on. Charge battery sign came on after I drained the battery before I plugged the charging cable in.
home button + volume button + power button = does not work.
What should I do?
My PC does not even read it when I connect it with USB.
I need help from you guys.
Firstly, I know exactly where you ran into your problem. You ran the upgrade from CM7 to CM9 from CWM. It explicitly states it in the instructions that you are NOT supposed to do that.
So, what I would do, if I were you, is try the following:
From when it's on, press and hold Power + VolUp, then hit the Home button 10x in fast succession. Then let everything go until the the screen shuts off. From there, press and hold Power + VolUP, you SHOULD end up with the big glowing USB symbol. This is where you wanna be. If you can get there, then you can run the AcmeUNInstaller, and remove the CM7 and CM9 install stuff. From there, you reboot into WebOS, and put the CM9 install stuff into the /media/cminstall folder, and try to run AcmeInstaller2 (very important to use 2, not just Installer). That'll allow you to install CM9.
If you can't do that, there's a thread at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1426244 that shows how to completely remove Android from your Touchpad, restore it to WebOS 3.0.0, and then upgrade from there. It's the best option, I think, if you can't get the AcmeUninstaller to work.
Hope that helps, mate.
Thank you.
I will try it and post.
Thanks a lot..
hopefully everything goes well...
It worked
I unstalled cm7 and other related files.
Thanks a lot!!!

Black screen on boot

My XT1092 powered down by itself at 4% yesterday, so I plugged it into a power bank and left it on its own for a while. At 24%, I tried to power it on, and the device boots, but gets stuck on the final image of the boot sequence for longer than usual, before booting into a black screen. From here, I can do some things, like Moto Display and Voice still work (I can get it as far as opening the camera, but anything else requires me to unlock my device, even tho I don't have a password), and notifications like WhatsApp and Gmail come in fine and can be seen, but the moment I swipe up from Display to unlock it, I can't do anything. Touchscreen is unresponsive in camera interface when launched, but volume to capture and screenshots work. Moto Gestures don't work, except double twist in camera interface to launch front camera. From a thread on reddit, this is apparently not the first time something like this has happened, but it's incredibly frustrating to get this. I've only had my Moto X for 3 months, since April, and in that time, I've had to factory reset it twice and send it in for repairs once due to a faulty power button. I've connected it to a PC in hopes of backing my stuff up, but while PC recognizes XT1092, it says there is nothing on the phone. Wiped the cache twice in an attempt to fix, and boot through fastboot, but once again, no luck. Running stock 5.1, unrooted, locked. Can access recovery menu, so whatever I can access from there is probably my best bet.
P.S. What does reboot to bootloader and view recovery logs mean?
Same thing here. Happened twice to me also. Not sure what causes it.

The new boot ipscreen doesn't appear on my device, but WhatsApp has warned me of date and time wrong, set to July 1, through Moto Display.
I am having the exact same issue. Has anybody had a luck resolving it short of a factory reset?
My phone battery died last night. I plugged my phone in, let it get about 15% charge, then tried to turn it back on. The phone boots like normal, but after the boot animation goes away, the screen is black. Active notifications still seem to work, and I can hold the power button to get the Power Down option. I can boot into the bootloader & access recovery just fine. However, my phone is fully stock (no root, no bootloader unlock, no anything). I can't seem to access ADB when the phone is powered normally (ie, when I'm at this mysterious black screen), but it's possible that USB debugging isn't even enabled.
So far, I've found a bunch people who've said a full factory reset will fix the problem, but I'm looking for another solution, or at least a way to grab my data before I reset. Since my bootloader's still locked, I can't seem to use fastboot boot to boot into TWRP, and I can't find any other way to access my data to copy it off the phone. I've tried wiping the cache using the stock recovery to no avail. Any suggestions?

Pure 5.1: Boots, has moto display, but black screen when I unlock

So currently I can boot my phone and it displays the boot screen fine. Once its done loading though I just have black screen. Moto display still works and shows new notifications but if I try to unlock the phone its still just the black screen. I can hold down the power button and the power menu shows up fine. I tried clearing the cache but that didn't help. Before I do a factory reset I thought I might see if any one here had some ideas on solutions.
I have the latest 5.1 OTA update. My phone us unlocked, but not rooted. I tried to hook it up to my computer to see if I could at least grab my files off of it, but while it shows up on my computer I can't access any actual files or directories.
I've tried searching around, but I can't find anyone else with a similar issue. Last night my phone battery ran down to zero (and rather quickly compared to normal usage). I may have ****ed it up by trying to get it to boot and be usable while charging but with the battery only at 1% (I guess with the standard charger an in-use Moto X uses power faster than it can take it from the charger). I tried letting it charge for a few minutes and then letting it boot, but after a couple of minutes of use it would shut down again. I finally gave up and let it charge. I didn't really pay attention to its status, but in the middle of the night when I woke up I booted it before falling back to sleep. Not sure there's a connection to my issue and this or not.
Any ideas on what the cause might be or what I can try to do to remedy the issue without data loss?
Edit: I ended up just doing a factory reset and that worked. Admin can feel free to delete this thread if they want.
This sounds similar to the issue here:

This is a bug that needs to be reported to Motorola.
I am that guy from the second post, and I wasn't able to recover the phone. Connecting to PC did not do anything. I would like to ask: is it booting with the new boot animation? Or old one? Because mine showed old animation long after the update was sent out, so I'm thinking the update may have tried to apply and failed, thus breaking the phone. Should all efforts fail, your only bet is to boot into recovery (power + volume up when off, volume down, volume up in the option menu (to select recovery), then hold power when Android robot appears, and while holding it down, press the vol up button once to make the list of recovery options appear. Scroll down to wipe data/factory reset, press power to select, then find Yes to confirm. Good luck!
so this just happened
i came back from a trip and took a whoooole lot of photos. when i came back my battery went to zero and device switched off. i charged the phone to 10-20% and switched it on and all i see is blank screen only moto display is working and power off option is showing itself when i hold the power button which is the same problem as yours
havent done any factory reset yet. is there any way to retreive the photos since i dont want to lose them. there are around 600 and all of them are of the trip.
im on 5.1
there are other people too who faced the same problem and all of them are on 5.1 but there is no solution

Mine did this yesterday, although I'm not entirely certain that the battery hit zero percent. The best I could tell from looking through the logs in recovery was that something was trying to update and failed. I suspect that it was a push from Motorola that hosed it. The only way to fix it is to do a factory reset. Once I did that and restored all my apps the battery was draining at a rate of 40% per hour or so. I found that the package access helper was the culprit and rebooted the phone. Post reboot, I immediately noticed that the boot animation and Moto logo had changed from what they had been on 5.0/5.1 (prior to yesterday). I also noticed that some of the widgets I hadn't reconfigured after the reset were now back. Weird indeed.
Anyway, I have to agree with the others that this is a very bad bug, that needs to be fixed. I am cautiously optimistic that the factory reset has cured it but we'll see. Based on my experience with this phone so far and the sale of Moto to Lenovo, this will be my last Moto phone.

OS Boots to black screen? Anyway to recover data?

Hi all, forgive me if this has already been asked in some form.
My girlfriends Verizon Moto X lost battery one day while she was playing a game. After she charged and tried booting again, it just booted to a black screen. It still runs through the full boot animation. Weirdly enough, active display will still show her information (and can be interacted with until unlocked), and holding power will bring up a power menu for shutdown. The camera gesture also works to launch it, but you can't interact with anything at all. Safe mode provides the exact same issues.
She is running the latest 5.1 update and is fully stock. She also does not wish to root or flash a custom recovery.
I have tried to pull the data, which windows recognizes as a media device, but shows empty when clicked on. OSx immediately says that the storage can not be accessed over android file transfer. I plugged it in for ADB but ADB won't seem to find it when its turned on. It is recognized in fastboot though. I also wiped the cache via the stock recovery, but that didn't help.
I believe a factory reset will be the solution to the black screen, but she has a bunch of photos she would really like to save. Is there anyway for me to actually get them off of the phone? If she can get those, I can get it factory reset for her no problem.
Thanks for any advice!
The exact same thing has happened to my girlfriend's phone as well and I'm also looking for a solution to recover the data. Moto X (2014) Pure, 5.1
The device boots. The Motorola boot animation plays all the way through, the screen brightness dims slightly as normal, and then the Amber Alert from the previous night vibrates the phone several times and displays over a fully black background. There are no soft buttons and no status bar. The home screen appears not to have loaded (yet?)
Attempts to click "OK" to close the alert fail.
The phone is hot. It is working hard. Something stuck in a loop?
The power button will bring up the "Power Off" prompt with no issues. The animation plays smoothly and the phone can be powered off as normal. The phone is able to recognize touch input here.
Calling the phone while it's on will play a ringtone. It is receiving calls.
Plugging the phone into a computer will show up as an MTP device. However, there are no contents listed.
Sometimes, the phone will prompt that the "System" process is not responding and will ask to close it. This has no effect.
Booting into Safe Mode has no effect.
Clearing the application cache from recovery mode has no effect.
I have a CSE degree but absolutely no Android experience. Forensics on a NAND dump or something like that isn't out of the question, unless it's not possible. Hope you're able to get some help.

Update?
Hello,
I am having this issue as well.
Unfortunately I am unable to perform any form of factory reset, the bootloader also just brings me to the black screen and I am unable to use soft keys. The kicker for me is that I cannot connect to my PC with a working USB. I used to have that available and now no device is recognized.

Reset itself overnight

Without doing anything myself, my Moto X 2014 has almost reset itself whilst I was asleep.
The first warning was no notifications, there's always an email or two, but then it wouldn't let me pull the quick settings down either. The phone wasnt using Smart Lock, in fact most system settings were reset. I figured something might be wrong with xposed (however, it's been running for months with no change, no updates to Android, xposed framework, or modules) so I updated all the modules and rebooted, still nothing. For some reason I went and switched to guest account, then switched back to my account and I'm now able to see notifications I missed and use phone almost normally. But my settings had reset and after setting swiftkey back up I see "Predictions not available. Check SD card." so typing is a pain.
My home button isn't working either, it flashes but doesn't do anything. The back and multitasking buttons work. Holding home button brings up Google Now on Tap, but it doesn't take me to home screen.
What could have happened? Is my storage knackered? Its not near full. Just to be clear, all my apps remained installed and logged in as far as I can tell. Only SwiftKey and the Home buttons remain as a problem.
Edit: Bluetooth devices also reset, wasn't connected to car stereo.
Edit 2: reinstalled swiftkey and predictions came back. Rebooted and they went again! Home button still not working.
Edit 3: Installed CatLog and when I press home it says: Not starting activity because user setup is in progress. So it thinks I'm trying to do first time setup? My accounts are already there (one of the settings that did remain).
Edit4: Ran
Code:
am start -n com.google.android.setupwizard/.SetupWizardTestActivity
as root (use su command) in terminal emulator and managed to complete setup... Home button works now and SwiftKey predictions seem to be working after a few reboots.
I hope that never happens again.
