i just noticed that my 1 month old nexus one has the notification bar burnt in. go to landscape view in the browser, load a white background like google.com, and sure enough i can see very faintly the notification bar.
i've always kept the display on auto brightness. i'm very curious to hear if anyone else checks their screen if they have the same issue. the phone is only 1 month old, maybe 2 at the tops, so its very strange for this to happen. anyone else?
Had mine since end of March. No burn-in or any type of ghosting. I have my screen time-out set to 30 seconds. I wonder if that's got anything to do with it.
that's weird. my time out has always been at the default of 2 minutes. surely that isn't too much different though. 1.5 minutes shouldn't make or break it.

its not too bad, but definitely there. the concern is how new this phone is. what happens after 6 months?
I'll try to take a pic later, but don't have a good camera on me.

Definately, you should give htc a call and tell them whats up. No rush on a picture.
AMOLED displays are worse for burn in than old CRT's, so br interesting to see how these fair
Got mine in late Jan and no sign of it.

Can't say either way if 1.5 minutes more of screen-on time can create the burn-in. But compared to the standard 30-sec time-out on most phones (some have 15 sec), 2 minutes is pretty long. You may want to set it to a shorter time-out duration.
you REALLY have to look close to see it. I tried it on black screen and you can't see it all. except in landscape the notification bar switches so at the very left inside the bar you can see the small faded line of the portrait bar.
i don't care enough to call HTC for any type of exchange or repair. I've heard the horror stories of their service too!
I have slight burn in on mine too. It's expected and I doubt the screen time out has anything to do with it. Keep in mind that any use of the phone the notification bar usually stays in the same place. Sometimes I have maps nav going on and that alone keeps the display on for the length of a car trip.
Also you guys can test by getting Dead Pixel Detect from the market and cycling through a few different colors.
well I'm not gonna get all worked up about it. sucks it happened so soon, hopefully it doesn't get worse. I'll try that dead pixel app just to see.

Drawing white on AMOLED requires much more than drawing black.
One more reason for using Desire (or a black notification bar theme)
I have two Nexus One's. The first was the Tmobile version which I used on ATT EDGE. That device has the purple tint issue and also has some burn in(uneven wear)where the notification bar is. Unfortunately I ran it with the brightness at 100%, 24-7. Now, it is very slight, but it is there.
I also have the 3G ATT version and it has no purple tint and has no burn in(uneven wear) yet and I've used it more now that I did the EDGE version. BUT, I never run this one with 100% brightness unless I have to.
Also, it is better to run at very low brightness for the first say hundred hours because there is a sharper dropoff in brightness half life during that time, making burn in(uneven wear)detectable with the human eye more likely to occur.
At the end of the day, for my situation, I blame myself for running at 100% brightness. I should have known better. LCD, with as long as they have been around, have innovated to the point of having very long half lives making burn in possible, but very rare. I was operating the way I always had with mobile devices. BUT, with these new screens, new care must be taken until AMOLED matures with higher brightness half life.

I have the same problem. t-mobile nexus one. Happened about 2 months after I first got it. HTC replaced it. And it happened again on the new one. I keep it on 100% brightness pretty much all the time except at night. Doesn't bother me much though. I hardly use my phone in landscape and it's only on white backgrounds.

If you get a new one just remember that even with a black notification bar, you're at risk. You will also need to run dark or black backgrounds to stay even with the black bar. Otherwise you will end up with a very bright bar and the rest of the screen will look yellowish/grey compared to it. It's always about making sure all the pixels are as evenly worn as possible. Another thing you can do is switch to a black notification bar now and run bright backgrounds and you can reverse some damage. It will never be perfect but you can get the wear more even again thus making the issue even less noticeable than it already is.
I agree about auto setting should have prevented this. At least you would think, but I'm no expert.
Several more things that can be done to help prevent this issue: if browsers or apps you use have the option to turn off the notification bar, use it. The more you can keep that notification bar off the screen, the more evenly you can wear the screen. Also, set your screen timeout to a shorter level. I used to use two minutes but now I use 30 seconds. The time that the screen is on and the bar is on the screen add up and can eventually contribute to uneven wear, and it's just wasted time waiting for the screen to timeout.

even with a black notification bar you would prob need white letters which would still burn in the white letters.
why the hell did I read this thread... lol mine is slight but I have some and I didn't notice it before because the only time I'm in landscape is in navigation most of the time.
So I bought the LED flip cover for my S7 Edge (EF-NG935). Although its a really good quality case I have issues with its software. The LED's on the case display the time, receiving a call or a text and afterwards it goes dark. There is no way for me to see if I have a notification on my phone. Usually the phone LED would flash slowly notifying me to check my phone. Other than that the Flip cover LED does not notify me for any general notification (viber,facebook etc). Not even when i receive a message on them. So there is no way for me to see that i just received a message or that I had received a message. Other than that it doesn't display music bars when music is playing or the volume.
What it would be excellent is that the LED's should be always on (hence low consumption). In case of a notification it should display the icon of the app that I got a notification from. The LEDs are quite a lot so its easy to figure out what app send the notification. The case costed 70 Euros which are quite a lot. There should be a customization software or something. Samsung needs to address this issue. My ROM version is : G935FXXU1APAW
I agree 100%. One of the great things about Android phones are the LED notifications, but this cover covers it and it should IMO show notifications on the cover.
Just a simple blinking diod would even be good enough.

I reported the issue to samsung...but I'm not expecting much...xda devs is the only salvation haha. Any rom cookers that can help?
When i went to a samsung store to buy the led flip case, the first one i used had an issue like yours so we cracked open another case and tried it on and the 2nd one works like a charm and as a matter of fact no issues until now.
My previous experiences tell me that the sensor itself is faulty on the case. Go to your nearest samsung store and try a new led flip case. See if the issue is still there on a new case.
Does it show all general notifications? Like what's up, Facebook,etc? Because mine shows only time, battery charging, incoming call,and sms. No general notifications...and furthermore it should stay on all the time so I know I had a notification..like the phone led! I'll go try another one Monday...but I still want to see customization on the led case. Always on option...app icons etc.

Ok so I was doing some googling on this, and found that it seems to work with Nova Launcher Prime + TeslaUnread (their unread badge plugin). It seems to show four dots spinning on other Samsung LED flip covers.
I don't have Nova Launcher Prime, so I can't test it. If you do, please feel free to try!
edit: ok so I've got nova launcher prime now, and it still doesn't work..

edit 2: from reading a bit more, the note 4 led cover had some support for 3rd party apps, but that seems to be gone with S7 LED cover..

I'm sure its not such a hard thing to do...if it could only take the notification bar icons...and show em on..that would be great. For example if you have a viber text...it should show a viber icon always on till you read it!

Notification only works with standard sms, prompt to swipe for call only happens when receiving calls, music player led only works with samsung music app, alarm clock with samsung built in clock app.
No 3rd party notification support.
Led doesnt stay lit all the time.
It was meant to do that.
And if u wanna check the time u can press the power/lock button.
Well that's no good. First of all..even if I get a standard sms or call..after it lids up for some seconds then it goes dark. The phone led is covered so how I supposed to notice I got a notification. If someone is willing to modify its settings or make a small app to take control of it that would be great. It's highly inefficient as is.
Luckily i read it. I was planning to buy one. Saved some money there.

No you should buy it...it's a really nice case! Even without the notifications...and I'm sure it's a matter of time till we get it right! Haha! I don't think there is a better case..leather plus led
Update: the case works with samsung music player. Wish it would stay on all the time. Volume shows up as well. So the only thing that doesn't work is general notifications and always on (which it's a must if you ask me)

Im not too sure but the number of leds there > number of lcds on a 5" lcd smartphone. If its always on, theres bound to be a huge battery drain
Well at least one led should fade in and out just to let you know you have a notification... Like the phone LED on top of the screen. Can someone write an app to control it? Or at least enable general notifications.
hi, i got problem with this s7 edge led flip case. somethimes it show the clock when i close it but sometimes not. already claim the warranty, and got new one but sadly it happen again after several hour using. one thing i noticed when the led it not show , then put my phone back on metal object suddenly led is working. what do u guys think, problem came from the case or the phone itself?
Probably nfc interference... The case works fine here. Except the above complaints. Try testing it on someone's else's phone. And try your nfc with another phone as well. If both works fine its a software problem. Hard reset!

I have the same problem like this. If the phone
attached with another phone the LED
can work properly,
But if not attached the LED not working.
Picked one up today, tried the hopeless Samsung Experience store in London - who had no S7 Edge cases at all !!!
Went to Carphone Warehouse and got a 3 for 2 deal, but again only bought the LED as that was all they had. Works fine, but boring the led as always with Samsung great idea (hardware) poor software failure to exploit hardware potential.
so did anyone figure out how to modify its software? it shouldnt be that hard i guess.
I've been using XZ3 for about 2 weeks. Last few days when always on display kicks in, the display turns green. This doesn't happen always, but a few times a day. So at this point I'm suspecting software issue and trying to find the cause of it.
Anyone having the same issue?

Yes, got the same issue about a week ago, and returned it. now waiting for replacement.
In my case, the screen become all green buy upper area had lighter green and lower was darker.
This can be a LG screen problem like the Mate 20 Pro is suffering
I contacted sony support and they are investing the issue.
They said since this only happens when always on display is enabled, it's likely software issue and fixable with update.
Every amoled screen I had was burned after some time. Mostly on the status bar. Once it was WhatsApp.
This time I want to prevent or delay it as long as possible. What recommendations do you have?
Never understood how people managed with burn ins. Well, stop watching a static picture with 100% brightness for 5hrs in a row is a good start.
i have owned more than a dozen samsung products with amoled screens, never had burn in on one of them. I always keep the screen very bright because my eyesight isnt that great. the one lg amoled phone i owned had terrible screen burn
The factors involved are: heat (ext), brightness (curr), uneven degradation rate of each color (rgb), persistent elements, and age (of panel). If half a screen is black and the other is blue, at max brightness, the blue subpixels are under the most stress. Their decay rate will overshadow the resting blue lights - plus that of green and red.
5yrs from now you're going to look at an all white image. Half of it will look awful.

Fall asleep once with your phone under your face and you'll have a burn in your amoled screen. Probably many other ways.
This is a common issue that most people don't even notice.
I get how it happens. I'm looking for ways to prevent it.
Setting a screen timeout is helpful
Had every Samsung for years and never had this, so I've no idea.
Maybe some people don't have a screen timeout and fall asleep sometimes dunno

I don't remember that. I know they had it on their Plasma TVs. I thought the Pixel phones with OLED screens also had it but don't know about Samsung phones. I do think that 99.9% of people that use a phone normally will never experience burn-in for the time they own the phone.
Use full immersive mode to hide the status bar and the top and bottom. Turn off auto brightness because if you leave it on and go in sun the brightness get high.
Screen time out to 15 seconds
Leave the brightness slider 50 percent or less
If you use aod make sure to flip the phone so it turns off when not using it
Use youtube in full screen if you use it a lot
These are my tips as I've had my screen changed 4 times due to burn in on my note 8.now using these methods my screen so far has no burn in
For me it's always was the top status bar that would burn in
But now I should never experience burn in ever again now I've actively tried to avoid it
Everyone I know that swears blind they don't have burn and have never had that issue on any device I immediately grab there phone and look closely on a complety grey background and 100 percent of them have status bar burn in at the top at the very least
No way am I turning stuff off to avoid something I've never seen

I also honestly don't know what you're talking about. I've had s3, s5, s7, s9 and now to s10. Never had anything of the sort and since s7 I've been using AOD. Nothing happend. For the love of me I can't imagine how you may have had anything wrong with the display....

Exactly, it's always the status bar. I think there is no immersive mode on s10+ yet, but I removed all the icons.

Well, I have had screen burn in occur on 3 different galaxy phones. Not from falling asleep, not from being clueless...but from using my phone with games. 2 were mine and 1 on My wife's..hers occurred from youtube.
I used to play clash of clans tons, got burn in from the smaller stats numbers at the top- over time...But replaced the phone no sweat. Verizon insurance took the phone as a defect, noted as screen image ghosting, no charge. I just didn't realize that it was an issue playing, but it was over time. I think it was an s6. The reps in the store were as surprised as I was that it had occurred.
Different device & model, S7 , but same thing occurred, not in the same game either...This time with clash royale- the towers and little cloud icon burned in from too much playing and too often, apparently. I thought I had been a bit more careful, but i think it was the frequency in which I was playing versus overall time.
This time I simply contacted support in the chat about the ghosting, they replaced it again as a defect, no charge.
My wife's occurred on the s7, hers was the top bar because of YouTube, too much & too often. So, did the same for my wife's phone through Verizon insurance, they replaced as a screen ghosting defect.
After I noted what was going on, she made adjustments, didn't happen again to either of us.
Both of us are on the 10s now and very aware this can occur. So, you just need to make sure you're not on those static images or bars or icons for either long periods or frequent shorter periods...it takes time, but it happens, despite popular misconception.
It is only really noticable on a white background, like when looking at mostly blank new tab in chrome.
On the last device, the S7, I made sure to cut the amount of time spent on static images, especially the games. I still kept the brightness always max during the day, nights it was at the lowest setting.
And yes, I kept my settings the same after the replacement, just made adjustments to my gaming approach. I didn't want to baby the phone screen settings, shouldn't have to. No issues on that one after adjusting my approach.
So, it's certainly possible to avoid and I bet there's many out there that use certain apps for long periods and frequently just do not really notice it may have occurred, even if slightly.. and I'm taking heavy users.
A note app with a clean page or white blank background reveals it, most of the time you're not using that, so ignorance is bliss...and makes It's easier for folks to bust on someone else for asking about screen burn in because they themselves are simply clueless it even remotely occured with them.
Heavy user naysayers, check your old phones, just for the heck of it... and then keep the findings to yourself because no one actually cares about you being right or wrong.
Anyway, it was an inconvenient lesson at the time,for me but good to know and learn from. Didn't cost me much but time, as it just took up time set up the phones again.
I know Samsung isn't too concerned about it or they wouldn't have preinstalled games on the phone (ie. solataire).
Just do your best to adjust your screen settings, like those that mentioned, if you're into that. Or simply adjust your apps/usage habits.
Don't overlook the Digital Wellbeing settings on the S10...that may also help you target certain apps with a timer also. Might be something useful for you.

You can set the schedule for the time for the AOD is active and either use the AOD auto brightness option or set the brightness lower, if that helps you feel more confident with it. The movement should help avoid issues.
FWIW, I used AOD with my previous phone without any issue and I anticipate the same with this one.
My burn in issue was only with the games & YouTube as noted.

This is my main issue with AMOLED screens. They look nice but they wear out. The nature of Android means they will wear out unevenly which is why people see burn in. The wearing out of your screen is cumulative. Meaning that it isn't like an old CRT TV where it would take weeks of a static image to burn in but just showing the same image over time day in and day out. The only way to prevent it is to use the entire screen with moving images, like full screen movies, so that the panel wears evenly.
The status bar and navigation bar tend to be on the screen all the time those images will burn in first. Dark mode can also cause issues because if the area is dark it isn't being used and if it isn't being used it will look brighter than other areas that were used more frequently. The s10 has a full screen mode option for some apps. Some apps like Netflix will show the full screen movie even around the camera cutout and that is ideal. Youtube will also allow you to zoom in and show the video around the camera. cutout Chrome and the Samsung browser keep the status bar but it will change colors based on the site and if the bar is white it will invert the status icons which will help keep the panel wearing evenly. I have the dolphin browser which runs in full screen but the top portion of the panel is not used so that is less than ideal.
Auto brightness can be used but in the bright sun that panel is wearing much faster. The screen time out should be set to 15 seconds. These panels are designed to look great but not be super durable and in many cases that's what Samsung wants. They benefit when you have to buy a new device. It's sad to say but its business.

I want to find out if heavy usage of youtube on this phone will cause Screen Burn In?
Heavy usage = Always on youtube. At least 8 to 10 hours of youtube per day.
Unless all the videos have the same static image (or its the same video on loop) screen burn is unlikely. The only issue would likely be the video not filling the screen leaving black bars down the side which could burn in. I'd recommend zooming in the video to fill the screen to avoid that.
That would mean there will still be burn in. ???????

Unless all the videos have the same static image (or its the same video on loop) screen burn is unlikely. The only issue would likely be the video not filling the screen leaving black bars down the side which could burn in. I'd recommend zooming in the video to fill the screen to avoid that.

isnt it an amoled display, meaning the black bars would just be the leds turned off meaning no burn in?
I use you tube a fair bit, maybe not to the extent the OP uses but a good few hours, and not even a hint of burn in
They would burn in eventually as the black bars are getting less use than the video area so they'd be brighter than the rest of the display
My experience with burn in is that I had to go change the front panel 4 times in One Year (Samsung). I am now afraid to buy a new phone because I don't want to have to go to the service centre 4-5 times in one year. Just wanted to find out if Huawei also would get such issue. And don't know if Huawei cover such issue in their warranty.

It's going to happen on any Amoled screen if you leave the same image on for long periods of time, nothing to do with the manufacturer of the device, the displays are rarely made by the same OEM as the device anyway
Turn brightness down and don't leave the same image on the screen, turn it off when not using it
I would recomend you to use "Youtube Vanced" as it has built in "background playback" and completly black theme and you can also turn the screen off during video playback.

Me too, the display seems very high quality in terms of build quality....
It really depends on your personal usage. High brightness means screen burn ins will appear sooner rather then later. On my old Galaxy S4, after 3 years of usage, no burn ins. On my old Galaxy A5 2016, after 2 years, no burn ins. My girlfriend's Galaxy S9+, after 1 and a half year, full keyboard burn in. She uses her phone with brightness at maximum a lot of times while I, on the other hand, can't stand high brightness, only in direct sunlight.
It all depends on your usage.
