[Q] Moto X AT&T stock version, does it come with a lock?

Hi guys,
total n00b question.
A friend of mine brought an AT&T Moto X (1st generation) phone with him for me from the U.S. to Germany.
He bought it from the motorola.com page directly 2 years ago through the Thanksgiving promo, never got it activated and its still stock and everything, never used before.
He paid the full retail price of 400$ at the time, does it however still come with a sim/netlock?
I thought since it didn't come with a contract (where you pay only a few $ and you are bound to a 1y/2y contract) and he paid the full 400$ for it, it doesn't have any sim/net lock?
Sadly I don't have a nano sim card to try it out, before I order one from my carrier I was hoping someone could help me out with this
I know that simlock threads are not allowed, I'm not asking for an unlock, just whether a retail 400$ phone has that lock or not?

If it's stock and on 4.4.2 or below, invest in Sunshine to unlock your bootloader. I'm not sure if AT&T sim-locked their Moto Xs. They should provide the code for free, if necessary, though since the phone was paid in full.

But worth spending another 25$ for it!
Now I'm still curious about the sim/netlock.
From what I found out by googling and reading for hours, if it has a simlock, AT&T will not unlock it cause I've never been a customer and it never was hooked up to an AT&T account, kinda bad if you ask me for a full price cell phone... The T-Mobile version comes 100% sim and BL unlocked...
Moto chat support cant help, they didn't even know that there are different versions of the Moto X 1st Gen...

It's usually less than 20 dollars to unlock them on a website that offers Sim unlocking. Not sure if at&t devices are usually OK to do so, but I would think they are. The carriers usually charge more even... In Canada anyway. ?

Hope you guys don't mind asking me another few questions, I'm just transiting over from my Razr I so a few things are different
If I don't need a custom recovery but planning on installing a different official Moto firmware which is signed by Moto (would love to flash the EU firmware to have full German language support) do I still need to unlock the BL or will this work with a locked BL since its an official Moto firmware?
Also are there any files I should not flash, therefore remove from the xml?
And I know that the BL unlock has nothing to do with the sim unlock, but any change if I unlock the BL and flash a different firmware, I won't need to enter a sim unlock code then?
I'm just trying to get as many answers before I try it and find out the "hard" way it won't work and that it results in a completely bricked device in the end...

Are the LTE bands hardware or software coded? Cause we use different bands over here in Europe and I know from the Sony Z1C you can activate all bands software-wise, so I was thinking maybe its the same with the Moto X?

Long story short, I reveived a nano sim card today, AT&T Moto X is locked, contacted AT&T via the above mentioned website, it took 2 days and today I received my sim unlock code via email from AT&T for free, no account with them needed and it works!

With the bootloader on the ATT XT1058 being locked, you'll only be able to flash Moto Signed Roms for your phone's CID or carrier branding. You will not be able to flash the XT1052 EU rom, or other X roms. Only the ATT XT1058.
If you are lucky and your ATT XT1058 has not yet been upgraded to Android 4.4.4 and bootoader 30.B7, you should be able to use JCase's Sunshine tool to unlock the bootloader. Note: Because this is a HACK, do NOT try to re-lock the bootloader after using it, or you will be permanently bootloader locked.

I don't believe flashing a different ROM would give you SIM unlock.
You're only option is getting it from the Carrier if you meet their terms/conditions. Or buying a SIM unlock code from an online seller.

I've read different things. So I can't say for sure which is correct.
I know that the Verizon X, XT1060, initially game supporting only LTE Band 13. Band 4 was later enabled by firmware update.
But I've also seen posts of some losing their entire cellular radio when flashing other model's full roms, and not getting it back by flashing the correct rom. (I don't recall the full details, sorry!).
On other phones, I've seen things like "edits" to turn on other bands. But no so for the 2013 X.
So I wouldn't mess with it.

Until know I didn't know that a signed Moto firmware is not just bound to the model but also to a CID, always thought you could flash any region firmware over the phone as long as its the same model.
Sunshine is def. an option, I didn't take the OTA (even thou it reminds me at least once a day cause I suspected already there would be more exploits available with a lower android OS.
SIM unlock is no problem anymore, AT&T provided me the unlock key via website request (took me a while to find that link, thou) and you don't need to have an account with them and the phone does NOT need to be hooked to an AT&T contract.
About the LTE bands:
OK, I don't want to mess with the modem / radio and lose all bands in the end but could I just flash the system files from the EU version via fastboot?
Which files should I flash and which files should I avoid flashing?
Basicially what I'm trying to achieve is getting German as android language and not just have German as keyboard language.
Or is German included in the CM11 as well cause then I imagine it would be much easier to just flash CM11 without damaging any bands...
All in all, I'm just looking for a fully stable KK OS that is in German

You could try using mFastboot and flash only System.img... BUT!!!! Its going to cause issues with OTA updates, and having mismatched parts always increases the risks for bricking and/or things just not working correctly!! So I usually don't recommend mixing things up.

I've not messed with adding additional languages. Nor have I used CM as I like my Moto features too much, and stock (rooted) runs just fine here.

Source for phone with unlocked bootloader

I am looking to buy an S4 Active with an unlocked bootloader that will allow flashing of custom ROMs. I have found a vendor in Hong Kong that appears to be selling the S4 Active with either what appears to be the AT&T configuration ("i537 For ATT"), or a non-ATT configuration ("I9295"). Can anyone confirm that this is what the "I9295" is and if it will work with North American GSM networks? Is there another avenue to get an S5 Active with an unlocked bootloader that I am missing?

The i9295 has the unlocked bootloader that you're looking for. I bought mine off eBay for $200 but had to weed through a ton of items claiming they were the i9295 but in reality were the i537. I used the i9295 on AT&T and am currently using it on T-Mobile. It works great, however you only get HSPA+ and not LTE, I'm trying to figure out it it's just a modem issue where I can just flash the i537 modems but I haven't been able to spend enough time to really figure it out.
If you want an S5 Active with an unlocked bootloader, try searching for the SM-G870F. It's the international version of the S5 Active, so theoretically it should have an unlocked bootloader. There are people posting on XDA who have this phone, so you might want to try asking them.

There is no such thing as a T-Mobile version. That is an i537, an AT&T phone. IT DOES NOT HAVE AN UNLOCKED BOOTLOADER. You can see the AT&T logo on the back cover. The phone has been SIM unlocked to work on T-Mobile, but the bootloader is still locked. This not the phone you want. If it's not too late I would cancel the order.

Thanks. I suspect that even though the seller said that the bootloader is unlocked and it is a Tmobile phone that you are 100% correct in your assessment that it's only carrier unlocked. I sent a similar message to an S4 Active motherboard seller in California who also told me that all of their mobos had unlocked bootloaders. I strongly suspect that most vendors have no idea what a locked bootloader is...

You're right. If you want to be 100% sure you are getting an i9295 with an unlocked bootloader, have them send you a photo of the phone's About screen showing:
Device Model
Baseband version
Kernel version
Build number.
Those should tell you whether or not it is an i9295, particularly the baseband version which is linked to the bootloader. The other information can be faked if they know what they're doing, but the baseband information is pulled directly from the modem and there is no way to fake it on the i537.

So am I correct in assuming that all non-ATT phones have a Device Name/Model number that is SAMSUNG-SGH-i9295?
What is specific to the non-ATT phones in the Baseband version?

Locked Bootloader = SGH-i537 (AT&T version)
Unlocked Bootloader = GT-i9295 (international version)
The i9295 baseband will say something like "I9295XXUCNE5" while the i537 will say something like "I537UCUCOC6". There an entire list of i9295 firmware on the Sammobile site in case you want to check where the exact baseband is from. So basically as long as it has i9295 in the baseband it is safe to assume it has an unlocked bootloader. When I was looking for my phone the first thing I did was look at the picture to see if it had the AT&T globe on the back cover, if it didn't I then asked for the photo showing the About screen to confirm. As long as both of those things check out I say you have a 99.9% chance of getting the i9295. You're probably going to have better luck with sellers in Europe because that where a majority of the i9295 sales occurred.

[Q] Why doesn't exist any upgrade to android 6 or 7 for s4 active i537?

Hello community, recently I did the procedure to get the lollipop version in my S4 active i537 keeping root, but after many searches I can't find how to upgrade to marshmallow or nougat version and I wondering why.
I think it have to be because at this moment doesn't exist any way to intall a custom recovery as TWRP or CWM, if this is true, why nobody found the way to unlock the bootloader yet? in order to manage the custom recovery.
And why is so difficult to unlock it?
Which are the differences between this s4 version with the others? And how can I help to unlock the bootloader, thanks in advance.

There is not and never will be marshmallow or nougat for the i537. This is because it is outside the "2-year" update cycle of Samsung/AT&T. If you look at other phones from Samsung and AT&T, there are very rarely updates to phones 2 years after the initial release of the phone. There's not really a good reason for this other than Samsung and AT&T want you to buy a new phone to get the latest updates. In the past you would need to get a new phone in order to have new hardware that is able to run the latest version of Android. But we're now at a point that nearly any phone released in the last 2-3 years can run nougat with minor lag. Manufacturers and carriers are holding on to the 2-year upgrade cycle and forcing you to buy new phones in order to get updates.

The i537 has a locked bootloader while the i9295 does not have a locked bootloader. Nobody has figured out how to unlock the bootloader on any variant of the S4.

As I stated above the only difference between the two versions of the Samsung Galaxy S4 Active (i537 vs i9295) is that the i537 has a locked bootloader and the i9295 does not. The i537 was sold exclusively through AT&T (US), Telcel (Mexico), and Claro (Uruguay), while the i9295 was sold internationally. Neither device will get official versions of marshmallow or nougat, but since the i9295 has an unlocked bootloader you can flash marshmallow and soon nougat custom ROMs. Other than the bootloader, the i537 and i9295 have identical hardware.

Honestly, unless you have a deep understanding of kernels, Linux, and cryptology, I'm not sure there's much help you can provide. The link I provided above explains all the effort that has been put into unlocking the bootloader. If you truly want to help I would read through that thread and see if there's anything meaningful you can provide.
Finally, if you don't ever want to have this problem again, always do your research and but a phone that has an unlockable bootloader. I purchased the i537 when it first came out only to find that the bootloader was locked and because of that I will never buy another phone with a locked bootloader again. Good luck.

A71 SM-A715F/DS and A-716U questions

is the unlocked A-716U rootable using magisk and does anyone think there will be development on it(ie Custom recoveries ? One last question one this specific model; assuming root is possible on unlocked would it be possible to get a carrier locked version (cost saving) and reflash firmware similar to oneplus's MSMtool?
lastly is the A71 SM-A715F/DS root-able with TWRP support?

U.S. variants usually can't be unlocked and therefore you can't install custom stuff like magisk patched files.

But, you would have to ask if the A71 is supported. It probably would need to be tested, but the owner of the thread was quite confident that it could be possible.

Oh okay, so there is no MSMtool like with oneplus devices where you can just change to international firmware? If so if there an international 5g version of the a71 (any a-series) with 5G? sorry the model/SKU's for samsung devices is confusing and there is an insane amount of them.

I'm sort of guessing that's the Odin equivalent of Samsung devices, not sure I've never owned a OnePlus device.
You can use Odin to flash different firmware on the device as long as it's the same SoC. For example, I've flashed Galaxy S9+ Unlocked firmware on my T-Mobile Galaxy S9+. One is variant SM-G965U and the other is SM-G965U1. However on this case, both firmware were US. One was unbranded U.S. firmware and the other was T-mobile branded firmware. I've also flashed Poland firmware on my Mexican A71, they're both model SM-A715F on this case.
I don't know if there's an international variant of the A71 5G. I guess you'll have to look that part up on your own. I think there is though.

Not really. Odin can only flash firmware, either stock or custom (you use it to flash TWRP and then basically everything else you flash with TWRP).
And no, Odin doesn't do any bootloader unlocking, any unlocking is done with the device itself. But as I mentioned, U.S devices aren't unlockable out the box.

There is no possible way to do it... for free as of now. If you want to unlock the U.S. variant you have to do it via the paid service I pointed out and thats only IF it works (as I mentioned, its been untested on the A71)
In comparison, you can buy the F variant, turn it on, head to developer settings and select OEM unlock and then unlock the bootloader.
If we ignore the paid service, sampwnd, that I pointed out in my other response then it is impossible to unlock the bootloader of the US variant and therefore, impossible to root.

There are a few A71 groups on Telegram, you can just search with @A71 on there, most groups are public

Question about Samsung S10 FW.

I had my S10 unlocked to work with any carrier, but the default is Sprint, it keeps asking me to activate the phone which is driving me nuts. My SIM works but its not a sprint SIM. I was wondering if I could just flash a Verizon FW to it of the same build? I tried to root this phone but im having problems-That was my first intention. My phone is a S10 Model SM-G973U P.S. Is there anyway to root this model? I tried Magisk. Thanks, Rob

You can try to insert a Sprint sim card for a few minutes. Maybe that helps to prevent the activation message.
