Hey everyone
I've recently solved my OTA problem (seen here) but I soon discovered yet another problem.
When I tried to enter SuperSU, I received the following error shown below.
As mentioned before, I'm on 4.4.2 and I have NO desire whatsoever to unlock my bootloader all over again. Is there anyway to re-root my phone without unlocking my bootloader or will I need to do just that in order to re-root?
Thanks in advance
Anyone?
Please help :crying:

From what I know, and by the error displayed on the attached screenshot, you need to do the whole rutine all over again. I am pretty sure rooting can not be done if bootloader is locked, which might mean you have a stock recovery image as well - and since that is not keen to be rooted (as far as I know) you need to flash a custom recovery like twrp. I might be wrong in all this, I'm newish to all this.

Since you are S-ON you can not flash a custom recovery or root without unlocking your bootloader.

Well, for starters, my bootloader is unlocked (as mentioned before), thus we eliminate the bootloader unlocking dilemma. But it still doesn't tell me how can I re-root my device: you want to tell me that I have to do is to flash a custom recovery and install SuperSU again, and my phone will be rooted again?

Why can't I flash twrp 2.7.1.0? and don't I need to install SuperSU via twrp? and what do you mean that twrp will promote me to root the phone? it never did that before..

latest known bug free version of twrp is 2.6.3.3/.4 thats why we always recommend using this version.

yes you can flash your stock recovery again, might be a good idea to do a nandroid backup of your current config before flashing back the stock recovery.
Code:
fastboot flash recovery name_of_recovery.img
fastboot erase cache
fastboot reboot

Will do! Thanks a bunch!!!
I got a NExus 7 wifi 2012 that was running 5.0. It was rooted, and used TWRP.
I got info about the updated and pressed install. Booted in to TWRP and nothing happened. I then pressed install in TWRP and in cache found the .zip and tried to install. Got an error.
I then booted in to android again, and flashed the stock recovery 5.0.2 (I guess it's like the stock 5.0?) and later I tried the OTA install again. Got an error.
I then read about the new "feature" in 5.0 about not allowing OTA if rooted, and I then in SuperSU completely uninstall the root and rebooted.
Later when I got the OTA update again, I thought it should work, but I still got the error.
What can I do? Right now I'm on a MAC. Can I in some way flash only the good stuff from the factory image, and in some way NOT have to factory reset the Nexus 7?
/Söder
Even when you unroot, your file system is tampered. Only way to update is using factory images.
I think you can flash the factory image without user data to prevent factory reset.

How is it I do that then? What files from the factory images (unpacked) is it that I need to flash? Is it fastboot or ADB I use to flash?

I have done this with my rooted N5 and N7. You need to re-flash system.
Unpack the 5.0 factory image and
fastboot flash system system.img

I managed to do this now to. My biggest problem is now to root the device again. I've switched back to stock recovery, before I removes root, when I was trying to apply the ota.
Now when I try to flash twrp recovery, I get an error about the size. I can flash the stock recovery though, the same way I flashed system.img and boot.img.
What can be wrong? I do I get root now again?

Are you saying you can't flash the TWRP recovery now? So are you now completely stock 5.0.2?

Yes, system, boot, recovery flashed with fastboot.
When in fastboot mode, I get error, something with size, when flashing twrp. I found a CWM recovery I could flash, but it didn't boot to recovery correctly.
The twrp file is not corrupt. Tried it again and also a different version.

OMG. I'm so f-ing stupid. Blaming all the x-mas food.
Was trying to flash the Oneplus One recovery. Not the one for Nexus 7.
Hope it works better now...

no, the only way to install them is to not modify the system in any way
If I have a P9 on Nougat B391, I receive an OTA, am currently rooted on Magisk v14. If I install the OTA anyway? What will happen? I know I will lose root, but will my bootloader be relocked? Am I going to lose any data?
Would like to know what will happen next as I am thinking of installing it. thanks!
there are 2 posible outcomes, maybe 3.
1. update will be successfull and you will lose root, twrp, bootloader can be locked too, but on fastboot it will shown as unlocked, if you cant instal twrp, then you need to unlock bootloader even if there is tuped unlocked.
2. update will fail and you will be back on same build you was.
3. never hapened to me, but are possible, that phone got bricked!

IMO, (2) is most possible utcome. (3) may happen if you force DLOAD and other manual methods.
Better:
1) unroot by Magisk Uninstaller, find the download link in the post https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=74913863&postcount=1
2) flash from TWRP original stock boot img
3) wipe Dalwik and Cache from TWRP
3) flash from fastboot original stock recovery
4) let it make OTA update but select in the System Update settings to use Full (not differential) update - it will not delete your apps and settings
Of course, you will loose root and TWRP but bootloader will remain unlocked and you will not risk bricking the phone.

thanks, this roughly gives me an idea on what would happen and the risks it contains! thanks a lot!

Magisk Uninstaller does not wipe your phone.
However, unlocking or relocking Bootloader (from Fastboot) triggers Factory restore
What is the correct steps to factory reset and lock the boot loader.
I don't want to brick the P5.
I am trading in the P5 and I am second guessing myself on the step for this method.
Use the Android Flash Tool. It's foolproof and gives you the option to relock the bootloader and wipe data.
To manually lock the bootloader, reboot to bootloader, and use ADB:
fastboot flashing lock
If you intend to manually flash the factory image via ADB, make sure this is the LAST thing you do.

Yep. You can force flash all partitions too, as well as disable verity and verification. It's honestly the easiest way to factory flash.
