I am in the process of building up apps on my new S8. I have spent all day installing and uninstalling Office-type apps trying to find one that will allow access to my NAS for saving and retrieval. Has anyone found an app of this type that allows local network storage?
Thanks
Not what you're asking, but if you don't find a better solution, you could consider saving locally to a specific folder on the device, and use the free SyncThing app and desktop client to automatically sync those things to the NAS through your computer. SyncThing is great.
I don't actually have experience with NAS because I'm using 2x 24-port SAS controllers in my desktop PC to access a huge amount of space that's treated as one, and of course through the Windows share, is available on the network, but I don't usually try to save something directly from an app to it, although I have used X-plore File Manager to copy or move files that already exist from one location to the other.
Good luck!
Interesting question. I've got several Windows shared drives on y local network, and I can open them from Solid Explorer, but they get copied to a temp file on my tablet, and you can't save them back to the drive. I tried using an Excel file with Google Docs and Microsoft Office / Excel.
I don't see a way to map the shared drives inside the applications. Cloud storage seems accessible, but not local shared drives.

I want to quickly dump some files every now and then. Not a huge fan of cables and card readers. Do we have something like OpenSSH for iPhone? I thought it would be pretty straightforward for Android but nope! I tried various FTP clients and I don't want to deal with FTP speeds. SSH, WiFi, Local network - any possibilities?
A quick fix may be to use Dropbox. 2GB of free cloud storage accessible from any phone (iphone/android afaik) or computer (win/mac/linux/other)
You can use dropbear (note, dropbear, not dropbox, I always confuse the names) for ssh if you're rooted, or try quicksshd in the market.
WebSharing is another option.
andftp = ftp + ssh
or just use ssh (scp) to move things around. connectbot does a nice job here.
gui folks = andftp
non-gui= connectbot
you can save locations in andftp, then it's just a tap away to transfer via wifi/3g/whatever.
bluetooth exchange is slooooow, but fairly decent if you're sitting on top fo the computer ;-)
I use WiFi File Explorer PRO and it works great.
I use aFile. Not free but has an awesome web GUI for uploading and downloading files.

Are there how tos for setting this up?
If you're using WiFi, the free EStrong File Explorer file manager app will let you connect to network shares and copy files back and forth. No need for root or anything like that.
I use quicksshd. It's about $2, and I can move files to/from the sdcard using winscp (graphical ssh prog that supports drag and drop)

define "this" in your setup question?
If you're handy with the terminal you can get Better Terminal Pro, which comes with an ssh client, and run the ssh/scp commands from anywhere using the phone. A little script or two can automate most of it.
I am looking for a method to wirelessly transfer files over WiFi to my SD card (sick of popping it out every time I want to add a photo or pdf - usb cable doesn't seem to work). I am currently using a CM7 variant. Any good suggestions on how to do this? Thanks in advance.
Does Dropbox work on the CM7 Rom? That's what I use on AutoNooter3 and it works wonders!
I use an app named WebSharing to accomplish this:
http://android.nextapp.com/site/websharing
Basically it gives you a web browser interface to move things on and off your android device. It's pretty damn cool and has a free version you can try.
I also use Dropbox for this and love it. It makes it easy to move any files from one computer to another. Just dump them into the cloud and pull them down to your device. You get 2GB for free.
If you sign up with Dropbox you can use my referral link and we both get an extra 250GB free. Not trying to spam the service, but it is pretty good.

Search the market for FTP server. You can copy files to and from the sdcard or internal memory with one of those.
There is also a smb server for android so you can do window shares off your android device but can't remember its name.

If you have Windows, you can do SMB transfer with ES File Explorer using the LAN tab. You can also search for the cifs thread by dasdud in the development section. I use cifsmanager with the cifs modules there. The only down size is that it only work on eclair.
Samba filesharing. Super easy to use.

I've used all the methods mentioned here, and a couple fo others, and by far the most seamless is SAMBA - I've even use dit to transfer files between two android devices via my PC.
Otherwise I have ES File explorer installed solely because it can look across the network from the Nook, but it often cannot resolve names properly and can be a bit clunky to use.
Awesome drop app in market
Wow, there's an awful lot of choices there. I don't suppose that there's a AFP server app for us Mac users?
I use SWIFTP and it works great. On my PC I use Filezilla to connect. And Fetch on my Mac.

you could also use adbWireless from the market
and then just do adb push <file> /sdcard
I use DavDrive. I can mount the storage right to Nautilus in Ubuntu. It works about the same with a Mac I think. Windows is a bit trickier.
I'm definitely going to try SAMBA now also.

there is also an app called File Share on the market. been using it for awhile now, works great
which of these apps would allow me to view folders i've shared in windows 7? or OSX?

ES File Explorer should work with Win7.
Here's an example of what cifsmanager does,

SwiFTP rules! Use it all the time for my droid v1 and new nook. Lanch the app, hit a button to enable and start up your FTP program on your PC (I use filezilla). Transfer files back and forth to your SD using FTP.

Agreed. I used SwiFTP on my Nook Color & HTC Incredible and connect with my host machine using Filezilla. Quick and painless setup!

Ok, I am convinced that I should use Samba. Now, not bring the brightest blub in the box when it comes to networking (actually, it's my weakest event in the techie trialthon), I have no idea what I need to do on the computer's end (Win 7) to get it to see the Nook, or vice-versa (no offense, documentation is not Samba's strong point). This is obviously over WiFi, so what am I missing? Thanks (I feel like an idoit).
I have been playing with the "Files" app on my new Droid Bionic but cannot figure out how to make it see files (i.e. documents) on my PC (Windows 7). When I go to Files => Shared folders => Add Server => Scan for server, it will show the IP addresses of all my networked computers. If I click on one of the IP addresses is will say "Server is not reachable". I was able to see the files on a networked printer that has a built-in card reader (with an SD card installed) so I know that it will work.
Any help would be great. I would love to be able to see and download documents from my PC to my Bionic without plugging in the USB.
Well one easy way is just add the folders to the zumocast app. Bam! Available anywhere anytime to view or download.
This problem has to do with how the stock file app accesses the network when trying to connect to windows 7 64bit.
The fix requires changing some line in your windows registry.
What I recommend is using estrongs, file manager or the astro file manager.
All of those 3 are after market apps that can access your PC just fine without you having to change anything in your registry.
If your away from home and your PC just happens to be online, I recommend using zumocast like the last user suggested.
You won't be able to copy files to your PC with it, but you can still access your files with no problem.

Thanks for these suggestions. I had not gotten around to installing Zumocast because I thought it was just for streaming media which I can also do with DLNA. Zumocast does, indeed, work very well. It is great to have access to any files in my Documents folder. It would be rare for me to want to send a file to my computer but if I need to there is always Dropbox.
Thanks again for everyone's help.
Anyone using WIFI file transfer app?? I jjust installed it and man, what a pleasure. No more messing with the flaky Nook cable. I can wirelessly transfer to and from my nook SD card from my desktop computer. This is making the copying of files so much nicer.
Did you mean WiFi Explorer?
Where do you go to get this app?
Thanks
Several do it, I used to use paid ones but "file expert" has that ability built in and is free.

I use Samba, makes your SD card a shared resource on a Windows network. It's slower than USB but all I use my cable for anymore is charging and the last time I swapped SD cards was when I moved to CM7.2.

I use eStrongs file manager. Hardly used a cable in years...
I tried ES File Manager but could not get connected with my PC on LAN. Took my head out of you know where and now I've got it working.
Is there a way to do batch file transfers with wftp? It took me a while to upload a bunch of books to my NC using that program one file at a time. Other than that I do like it alot better than having to hook up the usb.
I use good old Dropbox, mostly because it is the easiest ad I can just drop something in there without having my nook with me.

I use DropBox as well. Simple to use and I can upload file from any PC I am on whether it is installed or not.

If in windows ftp integration of internet explorer lets you open as a window for drag&drop of multiple files at once.
Haven't seen any other browsers with integration like that, only reason I keep internet explorer around even though I use something else for actual browsing.
Should be available for most wifi transfer apps, any that use ftp for share at least.

I used swift ftp server on my nook and whatever ftp client you like on any platform. On windows I use filezilla.
I got Wifi Explorer Pro from getjar and it does everything. The interface is very nice also. Best of all because it is on getjar it is a paid app that is free.
I’m a big fan of MiXplorer. Best file manager ever. I never figured out how to transfer files over FTP to/from SD card using MiXplorer though. MIUI file manager on the other hand I never found attractive. Especially after I discovered it connects to facebook every time you use it. NOT good but can be handled with NetGuard for the record or, of course, by removing those pesky facebook files. But what I found out recently is that MIUI’s file manager is capable of connecting and transferring files to/from SD card via FTP. Sweet! I was just on the point of removing it but have now decided to keep it after all.
FileZilla is my FTP client on PC.
Xplorer by lonelycatsgame has been my favorite for years. I won't use anything else. There are so many things I can do on my phone, many a lot easier than my pc.
