I'm just curious, I'm 18, and will be attending college at the end of the summer UT to be exact, and I'm not sure what I want to do after I finish my basics. I'm going for computer engineer, but I'm not not sure that's what i'm exactly trying to do, I want to build my own phone, and send it to manufacturers, but I'm not sure what class I should be taking for this, or even where to start?
Am I taking the right course? Or am I way off?
Sorry for being so off topic.
YEAHHHHHHHHHHH UT!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Computer engineering sounds good.
You need to start looking into internship opportunities right away. Here's a good start:

If you really want to build your a phone from scratch, then you need to consider about electrical engineering instead. I am not implying CompE is a bad idea, but most school's CompE curriculum do not require the study of electromagnetic, fields/waves, communications, and barely touches on analog. Those courses are very essential to what you want to do. I am about to graduate in EE with a RF/microwave concentration, and these stuffs are no cake at all...
From one Texan to another i welcome you to one of the best states in America.
That said you probably want to either go into hardware engineer, electrical engineering, or do a dual major in Computer engineering and Electrical Engineering.
Good luck bro.
Definitely go with EE and CE dual major, if your gonna be building it yourself you'll need to know both sides, software and hardware. I'm personally going for Game Software development, but in regards to any software the same rules can be applied that you learn in any degree that involves programming. If your wanting to get into working on android you'll need C, C++ (kernel and some other aspects are in these) and Java for the UI. Also gonna need some xml, html, and it never hurts to know some lua and C# =) I here mono & .NET are coming to android too
I would agree, and a double major in C.E. and E.E. would probably be best, but be prepared. Engineering isn't easy. I just finished up a Mechanical Engineering degree, and I can't imagine doing a double major in it. Also, your school will have a lot of clubs/teams you can join that can help you network to find an "in". Our school had an aerial robotics team, robotics team, formula s.a.e., etc. A lot of big companies show up for competitions, and networking there would def help you get your foot in the door. Plus, putting this on your resume looks good as long as it's a related field. Good luck, and prepare to lose a lot of sleep.
props to you man thats pretty cool
Do a business major and hire people to build it for you. Then start your own company go public and do some inside trading
ecotox gave the answer I was going to
@OP: I thought that this would be another lame question about what to do in life, seeking guidance, etc., but I see that you have an ambition and would merely want to know how to get there. Kudos to you, my friend, and I wish you succeed in life.

I would have +1'ed, but looking at some of the greatest people in tech, and the richest, they started out as geeks and nerds. So, no, that doesn't work.
reach for realistic goals
I was reading an article today about the hottest jobs in IT for 2012 and "Mobile Application Developer" was one of the 3 careers listed as a hot field.
Over the past decade I have felt that IT Development has been a tough job market because of all the global outsourcing.
I realize there are many devs in this forum, some do it as a hobby, some create apps to sell through Android Market etc for either money or ad revenue, and some work at the enterprise level and are also involved here for hobby or for other business/personal reasons
When I am thinking career in Android Dev I am thinking enterprise level... working in corporate supporting/developing mobile apps for employee/client/customer productivity, to basically improve business processes
http://www.metro.us/newyork/life/article/1029481--the-hottest-it-jobs-for-2012
I created this post hoping to get some feedback from devs... on their opinion of mobile application dev as a career prospect - would you recommend it to someone in college, someone later in their career etc?
Thanks.
ok guys i know this probably shouldnt be here. but as far as i know, xda community is one of the best educated , most creative bunch of android enthusiasts i could ever find
long story short: i guess you all saw the romo robot thing that uses your smartphone as a brain. and i have to achieve this huge senior project in systems and networking engineering for my last year in college. the point is i need new creative ideas on an app i can develop that uses this thing for a new purpose. please feel free to post any ideas you might ever have
device:rooted nexus s i9023
the company even produced its own sdk for devs
well i cant post links cz i'm kinda new here...jst google romo the smartphone robot to see what i'm talking about

How about a WiFi mapper? Romo wanders around the hallways of a building, sampling the Wifi signal strength. It produces a map of it's travels, annotated with the WifFi info (SSID, channels, signal strength).
yeah its not a bad idea. i even thought about that earlier. how big do you estimate the project to be? i need something that fairly takes 3-4 months.
smaller than that wouldn't be considered senior project material
My bachelors degree is a mere waste in contrast to d interest i have in, In fact i'm not yet graduated & almost on verge of drop out from college due to lack of interest in d degree i'm pursuing on Civil Engineering.
My basic interest lies in tech which was limited to non technical stuff or basic stuff and have almost zero knowledge in programming but have a urge to master machine learning which is grabbing my mind a lot but have no idea where to start.
May be i sound little crazy as a guy who dreams high but practically applies nothing, Due to hectic schedule & examinations in my college, I wasted my valuable 1st two years due to lack of guidance, & from last 18 months i'm badly into learning about mobiles, android, PC stuff but that is limited to non technical, which even a layman could do if he has interest.
I'm from India and planning to do Masters in US. XDAis the only place i know where i can interact with great programmers who have accomplished something practically,
I'm aiming towards machine learning, So any suggestions where should i start from or any specific forum suggestion where i could get better help other than quora or reddit
Thanx for u'r time and waiting for u'r valuable advice
Hey their guys, I know I'm a little late to the party but I decided it'd be good to introduce myself to the community.....Sooo Hai I'm Kenji, I'm a guy living and studying in England, I was originally from Japan. My hobby is generally around reverse engineering games and understanding the core structures developers put into place to prevent individuals from having an unfair advantage in games, I started hacking games from early 2015, back when I was a younger sport, I'm currently 21 and I've taken even more interest in Reverse engineering, going into fields such as Malware Analyst. Oh I almost forgot to mention I'm doing a degree in Comp Science. But yeah that's me. I initally joined XDA as I was interested in learning and exploring new areas
Welcome to XDA Forums. Hope you enjoy be in here
