It's amazing how much we actually use our phones in a given day, especially when we watch "videos"! Rate this thread to express how many hours of screen-on time you can get on the Samsung Galaxy Note5 before depleting the battery.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
SOT is usually 1 hour 23 minutes at 50%. With the Display brightness a little less than half.
The biggest culprit is Android OS stay awake time is always high.
Man I've been more than impressed by my SOT of the Note 5 compared to my crappy old Nexus 6. I can get 4-5 hours on here vs the 3 hours max I got on the N6. Blows me away. So much better phone than that was too.
I normally see about 3hrs on nougat where as MM I usually got closer to 4 hours which is a bummer but still reasonable. Main issue is the screen off battery drain on nougat. Seems to want to drain 8-10% per hour no matter what I'm doing most days.
It's ridiculous. I've drained my new note 5 in 2 hours SOT just browsing Web and reading this forum. I've got 4-5 hours of browsing with my old note 2. That's just crazy low. Xiaomi MI max 2 can easily give you 8 hours SOT. Thinking of exchange already :/
I don't understand how it is possible that every big review on the Internet that I found claims it is more than 8 or 10 hours of Web browsing possible on note 5! How can it be true? Some tests on YouTube shows there is only 4 hours from 100 to 0 without heavy cpu and network utilisation and just screen on...
I consider myself as a Power user. I Only get 2:30 hours no matter the screen resolution, 1080P or 2K. Nougat or Marshmallow doesn't matter. But I'm OK with that, I have a lot of apps and 3 Gmail accounts so I'm getting notifications all day long.
Oh man flashing the n fuel xl Rom was probably the best thing I've done with my note 5. Sot is still lingering around 3 hours or less but stand by time has literally doubled. Now when the screen is off, the phone actually chills out and doesn't burn up battery.
Went from 12-13 hours to 25-26 hours with my normal usage.
new note 5 user here
after reading many of your comment guys, i feel really lucky
i had a note 2 for more than 4 years (still have it) and with my average use i usually get 3.5-4 hours of screen time on
i just bought a note 5 like a week ago and i'm getting more than 6 hours of screen time on
i use the powersaving mode on "mid" and i usually dont need more than a low brightness ... i dont use my phone for games that much cuz i have a ps4 for that ... usually use it for social media and these stuff
i know its very good only bcuz i just got it but with my experience on the note 2 i will try not to drain the battery life and keep it good
note is just the best there is

Oh can you show me a link to the Rom? I am not a heavy user so about 2h sot is fine for me. However I need my phone to be able to last longer while in Standby. I get only 11hr of the phone, including 2hr sot now.
My note 5 battery is dropping >10% per hour with light use. SOT guesstimate to be about 3 hours. Standby drain is great but not when I start using it. Such battery drain defeats the purpose of a smartphone. I guess Samsung has a reason to design the phone with irreplaceable battery. Ordered the S8+ as replacement.
I was studying my battery life/SOT today. I managed to take some screen shots when my phone was around 8%. I'll upload them a little later when my phone is charged up. I let it drain all the way to try and calibrate it. I notice it shut off today at 2%. Around 8% I noticed my screen on time was over 5 hours or higher. Can't recall now the exact number but it seemed unusually high. I think I got around 10 hours of battery life. Once I post screen shots later can someone tell me if they seem accurate and if I get good battery life since I just upgraded to Nougat?

True. Irrespective of MM/Nougat, there is not much we can do about SOT. The best case can be just above 4 hrs. I am on PureX ROM of Rajeev. Between FuelXL and PureX, the best part is on Deep sleep. When the screen is off, the power consumption is close to Zero. The only reason appears to be that both the ROMs are heavily debloated. Any further major improvement to battery life of Note 5 can be only with Oreo ROM. In my Oneplus, i flashed custom Oreo ROM and the battery life is dramatically extended. So, lets wait and pray for Oreo form Note 5.
So everyone on stock N gets around 3-3.30hrs of sot. Felt relieved to read becoz i was worried and thought mayb my phones battery has loosen its capacity.
Btw is there any app that can tell us exact wear level of the battery?? I tried googling some apps but none gave me the exact info that I needed.
I thought my battery was still bad even after changing it but I'm getting well over 3 hours of screen time so it looks like I'm all good for now
I have 4.5-6 hours SOT every day. I'm on stock N, GPS, wifi, sync and lte on all the time. However, every now and then I make a cache reset in recovery, always after a new app installation. Guess my system is quite clean. Battery life is awesome om this device.

For some reason all the real consumers are having great battery life but it is not reflected in benchmarks tests done by the "reviewers".
Can you compare your battery life with similar usage on the phone you used previously ?

Well only reliable review so far has come from gsmarena.. all other tests are amateur/random tests, but gsmarena has a history/experience and most importantly reliable test pattern judging from my own experience.
Phones which score in between 80-90h in gsmarena battery test (https://www.gsmarena.com/battery-test.php3) are top tier 1 phone in terms of battery performance in real life based on my experience. I change phones almost as often as socks , so my statement is valid.
From my personal experience and usage pattern phones, which score in between 80-90h in gsmarena battery test, have SOT of at least ~5 hours in the heaviest of usage and up to ~8 hours of SOT in more relaxed scenarios. Like for instance OP5 constantly gives ~5 hours of SOT, but when you have long youtube usages together with heavy usage you reach the mentioned ~8hours of SOT.
My usage pattern -> Mostly whatsapp, youtube, chrome, some Spotify and Waze with BT, Location, SYNC always ON.
True the battery life is among the very top league in any case where there are only few top range phones (mid-range phones are not a fair comparison).
That said the we have yet to get an explanation as to why the bigger 4000mAh size battery advantage is not reflected into battery life advantage against other competitors despite Huawei promoting it big that they have a 4000mAh against their competitors. Also why the promised 30% better battery life than Mate 9 is not showing yet. I am eager to read the Anandtech review which is the best in breaking down the details when it comes to explaining all this but on the other hand im hoping they wait 1-2 months for more stable rom before doing their tests.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/mate-10/how-to/battery-life-thread-t3695518
I only use 'daily use' to check the battery life.
I try my best to use it as a normal person and after that i use it how i use it (heavy).
I'm not a fan of benchmark and software to test smartphones, it doesn't always give you the right answer...
Didn't the moto z play get a bad battery review from a benchmarking review site? I used that phone heavy for almost 2 days on a single charge. it was insane!
Even though gsmarena review of Mate 10 pro is not out but they have updated their specs and the battery test score is listed now. Mate 10 pro gets a 96h, making it an undoubted beast in battery life. So if all true, then the FHD+ oled combination did help over the Mate 10 standard. And also for comparison, the smaller 5.5 inch display Mate 9 pro which was QHD had a 87h score.

I had the Mate 8 9 and 10. Have to be honest, the battery on the 9 sucked but the 10 is amazing. I was initially reserved but just the other day i was down to 25% by end of day and i have about 4.5 hours SOT. This was a first for me and i did not do any tweaking. Ive never had a phone go past 3 hours SOT and i have cycled through a ton of phones. So if you're an out of the box guy with only a few simple tweaks like wifi, bluetooth and gps off, this phone is going to be a dream. I left the screen at 2k mind you.
So can we all agree if the Mate 10 gets an average of 5hrs + of SOT then this is what is expected of a 4000mAh battery?
Is SOT the best measure for battery life or is standby/usage hours (eg: 16-18 hours use) the better measure?
I get mixed SOT between 5 - 7 hours max.
My usage is around 17 - 18 hours max.
I would say I am a heavy user.

just learn to ignore that its always been like that (user posting crazy,in-explainable SOT times), even with phones which have the ****-yest of battery life out-there.
I look at this the following way - if my phone has +5.5" screen I am more than happy if I get ~5-7hours of SOT during heavy usage

Even if that were to be true, I don't care as long as I hit ~6-7hours of SOT with my usage pattern.
Don't get me wrong. I am not trying to challenge/refute your statement or the result you can reach. See, usage patterns vary from person to person, therefore I tend to reserve my judgement whether this or that phone is bad in terms of battery life before I actually use it. The only source I do trust judging from my own experience is gsmarena battery test -> any phone that has gsmarena endurance rating in between 80-100hours will be great SOT/battery life performance wise for me. Phones in that endurance rating range have always been great in terms of SOT considering my usage pattern and I consider great any phone that can do ~6hours of SOT on a 5.5"+ screen . That's about it.
p.s. one great example of SOT results was my experience with OP5. With regular daily heavy usage I was getting ~6h of SOT on single charge, but when I mixed in super long hours of youtube that same cycle would be give 10h of SOT, but it would be rather misleading to claim that OP5 is a 10h SOT phone, since its simply better @videoplayback in terms of battery consumption.. usage patterns differ from person to person and the results vary a lot depending on what the particular device is better at..

Seems weird, but I could be on 1 of the 2 things: display efficiency or resolution.
Resolution, strangely, didn't affect other phones that much.
But this can be testes with EMUI by lowering it to FHD, according to other members here.
I can't verify this, but when I buy this phone, if it's possible, I'll definitively lower the resolution. (I can't notice the difference)
The non pro is still almost no where to be found in Europe, right?
Hi all.
I have written a comment to another created threat in mi 9 forum, but I would like to read your comments here too.
I'm having battery draining and SOT problems with my mi 9, like I said in title (like most people I think).
I have tried everything to improve my battery life in my mi 9, and It's not bad at all, but I was expecting better performance for a top xiaomi smartphone with sd 855 and 5 months old in spite of the fact that it has "only" 3300mah battery ...
I'm not a heavy user and I try to get max SOT and minimum battery drain in all my phones, because I don't like changing smartphones very often and I like to take care of it.
I came from a Moto G4 plus, and I had 5h of SOT in 48h without high standby drainage (maybe 1-2% of drainage overnight in 7-9h) with a 3 years old battery and worst hardware and software. In mi 9, I'm getting 5-6h of SOT in 48-72h. Not bad at all, but standby drainage is awfull. It loses 20-25% of the battery every 48h (3-5% overnight), and in a smartphone with such a fair battery it's a problem. If I'm not getting great results with not heavy use and my smartphone is new, I don't want to think in 2-3 years + mid-heavy use ... I have tried everything (full wipes, reinstalling, the most powerfull battery saving, etc) and I don't have great result. Standby drainage is very hight compared to other phones (I have tried a friend poco f1 and I had 10h in 48-72h with 1% overnight drainage. It was awsome).
And now the question ...
I'm thinking of changing my mi 9 for a huawei mate 20... I still have the 30d Amazon refund and I am not comfortable with my phone's battery.
- Mate 20 pros vs mi 9: +700 mah battery and more efficient, the best ips panel without burn-in problem, and fingerprint sensor behind the screen (no like too much in-screen fingerprint at all).
- Pros mi 9 vs mate 20: sd 855 (but geekbech it's very very similar, and antutu winner is mi 9 only for gamming but mate 20 still on top), unlocking bootloader for mi 9 (better comunity in xda, but if emui works well I think I don't need custom rooms, the problem here is Trump/google vs China ... but now apeares to be solved and we would have newer updates to Android Q), wireless charging (I don't use it because smartphone is hotter when charging 3-5º vs cable+1,5a charger, It takes more time to charge with elevated temperature), not jack (better for waterproof), maybe very little better cameras in mi 9 and little better results, 4 months younger (very little difference) and It's the top phone on xiaomi (mate 20 is the little brother because we have mate 20 pro, 20x, p30, p30 pro and we will have soon mate 20 and mate 20 pro; and that could be worst because we will get latter uptdates in mate 20).
What do you think? Would you change mi 9 for mate 20? Reading your comments. Greetings.
If your looking for better battery life I'd say get the mate 20. I've had mine for just under 3 months. Best damn purchase I've ever made (purchased way below retail during trump ban). I consider myself a medium to heavy user (I don't play mobile games however). With some useless features turned off and some fetch services disabled. I can easily get 8-10 hrs on screen time with this phone, it's the best battery life I've ever had, prior I was getting 4hrs with another Android phone.

Just a month ago I had Poco F1. On the battery Sot was similar to the 20 mate. Night drainage in Poco 1-3%, mate 2-5%. Mate saves better on screen on. Performance similar to Poco. If I had to exchange Mi9, it was on mi9t Pro.
So, I dunno what these reviewers and youtubers are up to with these phones, but got mine earlier today (XL), roughly 7 hours ago, and have been using it since.
Phone arrived with 75% charge. Only charging I have done was about 2 20 minute trips plugged into my trucks USB port for Android Auto.
I have everything enabled such as location, soli, smooth display, etc. I use adaptive brightness, ambient eq is off.
I have been very happy with battery life so far. Reviewers are paid to be critical.
Sent from my Pixel 4 XL using Tapatalk
My battery life has been excellent as well. I have no idea what these reviewers are doing.
Reviewers forget they have every battery draining social app going, bet they leave Bluetooth, location etc on. Plus they use the camera a but load for testing
I am in agreement as well. seems to be fairly strong with light use and force 90hz checked in dev options for me also. Definitely had worse phones before, definitely better also though. Don't understand the hate though - Pixel 4 XL= 3,700mAh battery, 6.3 in screen vs 1+ 7 pro 4,000mAh 6.67 in. Contrary to popular talk the oneplus 7 pro battery isn't amazing either which is why I don't get the shade.
It all depends what you consider good. Personally I think 6hrs of screen on time staring with a fully charged battery is good, 8+ hours is fantastic. So far the Pixel 4 XL is just barely hitting that good mark for me.
I'm sure that once a few weeks have gone by and kernel devs are on this like a fat kid on a cupcake we'll see guides for extra battery life and other optimizations.
So I've had the Pixel 4 XL , for 3 full days in the UK now.
Day 1 SOT was 6 hrs 3 mins with 9% left
Day 2 SOT was 6 hrs 15 min with 4 % left
Day 3 SOT is 5 hrs 1 min with 18% left.
The battery is more than adequate. I had the 3 XL which would get a max of just over 4 hours. I'm new to the forum but I have screenshots as well but don't have a clue how to upload lol. The phone is on 90hz at all times too but most times you can't really tell. It's an amazing phone so fast, the disappointment is video quality again and some of the pic quality are a similar levels to 3 XL but I need to fully utilise the camera.
Boy I don't know what you guys are doing because I have been getting nowhere close to that in screen on time. I'm at 3 hours is SOT right now with only 30% left

**Update day 4 so 6.49am in the UK, fell asleep so didn't charge currently on 27% with SOT of 4 hrs 3 min which will give me 6 hours comfortably to 0%. After day 1 I forced 90hz on, tap to wake on, pick up wake on too. I may add a few more days updates if anyone is interested.
Battery of my Pixel 4 XL is at best "meh" so far. I noticed problems with several apps running away and draining battery which I would blame on compatibility issues with Android 10. Overall though even without the apps the battery drains quite fast under normal usage conditions. Compared to my S10+ and iPhone 11 Pro the battery is much worse, especially when compared to the latter. It is definitely not a worry-free, all-day phone. The reviews critical of the battery life were spot on. I cannot even imagine the smaller Pixel 4. It probably cannot get through half of one day without a recharge. Reminds me of my BlackBerry Z10.

I've been using my 4XL fairly heavy for the last twenty hours: six hours and one minute SOT, 20% battery remaining, four hours left predicted. I'm having no complaints with this battery. The phone's been in out-of-the-box operating condition, too. I haven't tweaked the phone into a 'Maximum Battery Saving Mode', but I did turn off the "Wop" and "Bong" motion gestures.
I've been running it through the ringer and I really have no complaints so far on the battery.

Really don't know what to tell you. As I said I have the other two phones as direct comparison (I've had the S10+ since launch day, same with the iPhone 11 Pro). For my workload and style of usage - heavy email, medium texting, lots of consumption of reading content throughout the day, news, streaming music about 1-2 hours per day, plus about 30-60 minutes of video on average it is definitely noticeably below the level of the other two phones, especially the iPhone 11 Pro which has kind of crazy-good battery life. I don't turn off any features to "save battery" (never believed in that because I should not need to adapt to the phone). I run auto-brightness, ambient EQ, use the high-refresh display (though not forced to 90Hz), smart stay, blue light filter and switch to dark mode at sunset, etc. Smartwatch (Gear S3) is always in tow. I can get between 4-4.5 hours of screen-on time before the battery is basically out.
I don't know why people are so focused on screen on time as there are so many variables behind it. Could have one person that's just texting all day, social media and some calls while mostly on wi-fi and be like zomg 8+ hours SOT BEAST MODE! Then you have someone that's watching YT videos, doing some gaming, pictures etc and on data the majority of the time but only gets like 4 hours SOT and gets branded as bad. People seem to forget as long as you make it through the day that's what should matter the most.

Everyone knows the saying "your mileage may vary" but when a majority of people are showing 4.5-5.5 hours SOT, that is disappointing for a phone of this price range. There'll always be exceptions and people getting 6-7 hours consistently but maybe even people only getting 4 hours. That's the YMMV part for this phone. Now for something like the iPhone 11 models, people are consistently getting around 8 hours and even more on a full charge. That's a good 3.5-2.5 hours more SOT. For me I'll be happy with what I used to get the first year or so with my 2 XL which was 6-7 hours and an occasional 8 hour.
It's too soon for me to judge my phone but yes I'll be disappointed if I only get 4.5-5.5 hours but I'll deal with it.

Spot on and then you'll get someone seeing someone else on 8 hours SOT and wanting to copy their settings to try and get the same result on a completely different usage pattern then complain they can't get it.

I'm hitting over 7 hour SOTs for the past couple of days and I'm pleased with that. However I also went through each app and restricted background battery usage on every app that I felt wouldn't negativity impact me if imposed it.
this may or may not fit in this thread, but figured i would post it as its battery related
Anyone having issues with idle drain? ... mine seems to be held awake quite a bit, and i cannot figure out why. Same apps as my pixel 3xl, same everything.
Installed gsam, and its essentially saying the system is what is keeping it awake
Was wondering if anyone else had this issue, or is anyone has any ideas as to what may be causing this
Any help would be appreciated

Hi, thanks for any help.
I'm between a mi 11 or a OnePlus 8/9 pro and the only thing I'm concerned about is whether MIUI might be a bit buggy or 'incomplete' feeling - seen mixed things on the forum. I've read many of the reviews so know most of the basics re battery / camera etc.
Generally with the stock ROMs do people find they have any frequently annoying issues?
It's also a bit quieter than other phones with custom ROMs - is that because it's a newer handset or is it unlikely that these will be developed?
People generally happy with their purchase?
Thanks for your help
I would recommend the OnePlus 9 Pro, the Mi 11 has AWFUL battery life.

What do you mean?
For me mi 11 is the phone with best battery life of all phones I had. I think battery is very good, but probably if you are a heavy gamer it won't last that long. But then no phone will last 2 days with top performance. It is like wanting a race car but no gas consumption.
I find the battery life good enough I get around 6-7 sot that must be around similar to other high end using similar spec also don't forget this actually is cheaper , fhd 120hz , fhd because I cant notice the difference
The battery life is really not that bad.. It easily lasts me through the whole day, with 5-6hrs of SOT (120HZ, 1440P resolution always on) Also the included charger is really fast, so even if the battery life is not the best, it can be easily fully charged in 35-40minutes.
