I recently purchased a Tab S8 Ultra and it's been great so far. However, I noticed that the S Pen doesn't work consistently at the edges of the tablet, particularly the 'bottom' edge where the keyboard connector is.
I initially observed this when I tried to click the 'home' navigation button with the pen, but the click would not register. Repeated attempts to click were met with failed responses more often than registered clicks. This was with the tablet in landscape mode and the taskbar enabled - so the navigation buttons were concentrated at the bottom right of the screen. With the tablet rotated to portrait mode, however, the buttons were responsive and worked as expected. I tested this in Samsung Notes as well. It seems to be common for small 'dead spots' to appear when drawing along the edge. The thing is, when making a pass back towards those spots, they can sometimes be drawn over. These spots are generally in the same area, but the pens' ability to function over these regions seems random. See examples.
I assume this has to do with the magnets around the sides of the tablet interfering with the display/pen EMR technology, but it's odd that it is inconsistent. If the tablet is using permanent magnets at the bottom, one would expect the effects of their magnetic field to be present at all times. It would also be a pretty major design flaw if the pen doesn't consistently work with the navigation buttons in one of their default locations as well.
Has anyone noticed similar behavior with their S8 Ultra (or any S8 series tablet for that matter)? Do you think I have a defective unit?
Make sure you have not turned on disable gestures and buttons when using s pen. That will make so when you use s pen the home button and such won't take affect when touching them with the pen. So no it has nothing to do with magnets for keyboard. Since i tried now with my s pen and it's registering fine.

Im facing the same issue infact my s pen doesn't work properly in the middle of the screen also. If i press it too hard then it seems to work fine. It started happening a month ago can someone please suggest what i should do ?
Also if it take it to the service center will they replace the device ?

I have the exact same problem + it also happpes in the top edge not just the bottom ,,
As you said home button doesn't work with s pen but other buttons ( back , recent , screenshot , power off ) works instantly without any miss , which is weird
But in other scenarios , not home screen , like photopea.com ; the "adding layer" button ( which is at the bottom edge almost at the same place of home button ) doesn't work with s pen
Another example; in adobe lightroom the top edge have the same problem, it doesn't respond when tapping ir drawing on it , but it Does when starting the drawing in a closer area from the middle then moving the s pen to the edge , in this case it works , which is very weird

If your issues are to the right of the front-facing camera, maybe they have to do with the S Pen magnets?
I ultimately decided to exchange the tablet. My new one doesn't have any of my aforementioned problems. Also, the issues had nothing to do with the gestures option - the dead spots existed with gestures on/off.
Although the issue is solved, the root cause is still unknown. I'm starting to consider if the problems I had were due to a case. For a short period of time I had a Speck Balance Folio on my first Tab S8 Ultra. It was a nice case but I had to remove it after the first day because the cases magnets were creating huge dead spots on the screen. The case had a pretty large magnet spanning the lower half of the tablet, so maybe it was strong enough to permanently alter the in-built tablet magnets? I never drew on the edges of the screen until after I removed the case, so there was no way to know if the issue existed beforehand.
I currently have the official Samsung Protective Standing cover on my new tablet, and while it does have two small magnets near the edges, I have no issues using any part of the screen with the S Pen.
I guess to answer my own question in the post, and to possibly help anyone reading this in the future:
Your tablet should not be having issues near the edges of the screen.
Avoid all third party cases if possible, unless they are confirmed to be magnet-free (e.g. Supcase Unicorn Beetle and Poetic Turtleskin - It's a shame there are no magnet-free folio cases with decent protection).

The problem ( in lightroom ) happens in the left side of the cameras
I have the official Samsung bookcover keyboard , i removed it but the home button stil didn't respond , then i thought what will happen if i try from a different angle ? And that's what i did , i used the s pen as its top is heading to the cameras not to my side , and it worked ! Home button responded in every single try ,,,, then i placed back the kickstand piece of the bookcover and did the same with the s pen , and it also worked with no miss , so i think it's not the magnets' fault , it's something in the angle of the pen ,,,, note that i tried the normal way of using it ( when the top of the s pen is heading to me ) and rotate it many times and touch the home button , didn't work , so this probably confirms that it's a matter of angle detection not dead spots or magnet thing
Also , the top left edge responded when swiping down to bring the quick setting , so maybe lightroom app is programmed to not detect the edge's touch in order to prevent any accident touching when handing the device
So i guess there're no big concerns here , we can live with that
Generally speaking, Samsung tablets have always had issues with covers that use magnets to hold the flap closed against the screen as they are too strong for the inbuilt algorithms to compensate for. The Spen itself is nothing but a magnet whose movement is detected by these algorithms. The magnet flaps interfere with that.
I have had ZERO issues since I switched to a cover that uses an elastic band to hold the flap closed against the screen. It has magnets, sure, but they're tiny and only for the lock/unlock functionality, not to physically hold the flap against the screen.

Well, that "problem" it isn't that. They need to do that because they want you to see the line that are you drawing.
If you enter in to the options of the drawing pen and change to left handed, you will see how that millimeters move to the other side of the pen. So, 1 2 up and 1 or 2mm left/right are necessary and it is how the wacom screens works. In other side I have tried a lot of wacom devices and this is one of the most accurate.
The only problem that I see it is the pen that if you don't give enough pressure it doesn't works, and if you give much, then it will writes in "bold" rather than skinny lines.
Try to move the pen without pressing it, only light slide and see how it doesn't do anything.
Other funny thing on the wacom devices is that the accuracy is not the same in the center of the screen and in the side of it. Problems of magnetism
Did you try pen pressure with autodesk sketchbook, is it working ?

Just a quick question for you who have the phone and use the pen. When you use your pen for drawing, what happens when your hand (which you hold the pen with) touches the screen? It must be annoying always to write without touching the screen with the hand/fingers like you would do if you were to write with an ordinary pen on a classic paper.

The good thing is that u can touch the screen with finger when u write, unlike pure capacitive screen
If u touch the note with finger u will get a mark, ie u can use ur finger to write on the note
If u touch the area of screen above the note, the note app disappears to show the app beneath it and when u remove the finger the note comes back. This is to jot down things from the app beneath it. Hope this makes sense.

I'm curious, are you left handed?
There is a setting: settings -> pen settings -> dominant hand.
I changed mine to left handed (which I am), and when my right handed friend used it, he complained that it was off by a millimeter or too to the right.

Thats not an issue as when the pen is touching (so it's active), the screen will no longer accept any additional touches. So with your fingers, multi touch will be active for upto 10 (I believe) seperate touches at once, but as soon as the pen is touching the screen, it will only pick up the pen and no additional touches from your fingers etc so you can rest your fingers on the screen while you are writing.

The offset is variable and depends on the angle of the pen.
The most simple way to test this and to get used to it, is to open
a S-memo. Then instead of using the line option you choose the
eraser option. Touch the screen and on the screen you see a circle.
Now with the pen on the screen change the angle of the pen and you will see
the tip of the pen 'move' inside the circle. Now get used to the angle of the pen
where the tip is in the center of the circle. Once you are used to this angle your pen will be dead on when drawing.
Remember way back when you learned how to write, it took you days to get used to holding a pen or pencil the right way.
I can recommend the official samsung s-pen holder for a much nicer feeling when using the pen.

I just want to clarify thhis, the pen needs to be touching and in writing pressure on the screen for it to stop accepting input from your skin.

Go to photo editor choose a bright picture choose the pen option from photo editor hold the phone on portrait mode and try to draw on the edge with a smaller tip on the pen then go switch dominated hand on spen and try again and then come back and say this isn't a devs calibration problem or coding or call it how you want. But give attention to

This idea that we need to see where we are writing is just as imbecilic as Motorola's idea of protecting users from rain drops. Back then, it stoped you from playing any games that required you to keep your finger stationary for more than 15 seconds. Here, it makes drawing and writing very difficult.
I don't ****ing see where I'm writing when I'm using a paper, why would I need that on my phone's screen?
I have also problems using my spen. Is it realy normal to put quite much pressure on the pen to write sth.? It's realy hart to dram thin lines without any interruption of the line..... feels as if that'S not "normal"

I don't know if this will help, but my s-pen was off a few millimeters too after an official update. I tried calibrating the accelerometer and gyro and the s-pen became accurate again. I'm not sure though if this indeed did the trick or if my mind was just playing tricks on me.

I also wrote Samsung's support yesterday. I'll see what they say.
I won't flash my phone before I can be sure that it's okay and I don't have to return it.....

iam having the exact same problem..please tell me if you find a solution.
it didnt happen with the pen which came with phone..it had the millimeters away problem..and when i lost i ordered new pen this new pen has more pressure problem..its very hard to draw thin lines

This is absolutely correct... the stylus orientation definitely does affect the point offset.
The problem is (at least on mine) is that the "left-handed" setting appears to do nothing. The point offset is the same regardless of the setting (it's biased for right handed), so trying to write left handed is very hard.
How many people that are having the problem are 'lefties'? If I pretend to be right handed, the offset is perfect (regardless of the left or right setting). This has to be a bug and I'll presume it'll get fixed soon. Because it's really quite intolerable as a leftie.
Today I upgraded my phone to Criskos rom with Abyss kernel and all accuracy problems are gone for me.Never had problem with pressure.

Sometimes If I hold the pen close enough (but without touching) the screen would annoyingly picks it up. The problem is way more apparent if I hold the phone upside down, with the screen facing downwards and holding the pen inclined at an angle. Is this a common problem?

Wacom styluses are magnetic based, not capacitive, so technically it doesn't need to touch the screen. You can place a piece of paper over it and trace images for example.
I can't reproduce what you are seeing though. If I open s-memo, and place the stylus in contact with the screen with no pressure, it doesn't trace.
Just watched the video - holy cow, your pen is nowhere close to the note. wow. it looks like it's a good 1.5 cm or so.

Can not reproduce this on my device. Sounds like some electronic magnet issues or perhaps some other pen?? Anyways, sounds like you should get your device replaced unless you wish to keep it as a Magical Note ;-)

Faulty Pen
You have a faulty pen! Your pressure sensor from pen's tip is defective, jammed, or maybe only the white tip is physically stuck.
Everybody could reproduce this behavior by putting the pen close to screen, with memo app running, and applying pressure on pen's tip with your finger/nail.
So it's normal for the S-pen not to register if there is no pressure applied despite contact? Because that is what is happening with my s-pen. There is contact, no pressure, and it does not register. Is this how it is suppose to work?
Also, does the S-pen have a very faint click or sound when applying pressure like it is activating a pressure sensitive "something".

I contacted Samsung for replace the Pen, but they told me that is the first time they receive this type of problem.. so.. they will tell me something after some check..
Same problem for me, noticed that it's usually after the first time you touch the screen with the pen, like it still thinks the pen is touching even though its not. I'll log it with Samsung too see if they give me the same 'haven't seen this before' line.
I also have the same issue, it's rather annoying.

Same problem here, appears to be worse when you first start using the pen. They should add a calibration option for the pressure to fix this, i think its now auto calibrating and that's why the problem looks worse at start.

It involves pulling the pen apart and there are tiny parts in there!
I am kicking myself I did not take photos, but I honestly didn't think I would get it to work again...
If anyone is still having probs, I can make up a tutorial of what you need to do.
Atleast you MAY not have to buy another S Pen.

S-Pen repair tutorial- not for the faint-heated
OK...
Now I believe everyone that is having problems has at one time or another accidently or on purpose pulled the rear end out.
From what I have seen you CANNOT replicate this fault without that happenning.
Using a small blade prise the button from the Spen starting at the rear end.
The button will flex and pop out.
Pull the rear end off the pen (again ) now CAREFULLY and into a small tray if possible, turn the pen upside down and the 'bits' will come out, they are:
white nib
tiny O ring
tiny disk with nob one end and hole the other
electronics with button
What had happened on mine is that the o ring, disk and nib had pulled apart so that the disk and the wire-wound rod were always in contact so the Note always thought that the pen was in contact with the screen.
The correct order of bits is:
Nib-Disk-O Ring- Rest of electronics...
you will see the nib has a nob that will locate into the disk, the other side of the disk will hold the oring and all this sits against the wire-wound rod.
NO I AM NOT PULLING MINE APART AGAIN FOR PICS!!!
I put the electronics back in first and then using tweezers put the other bits back in through the button hole before carefully sliding it all back to the nib-end of the pen.
The button then pushes back in and locks.
Now, I a happy to answer questions, or if you like, and if you trust me, I am happy to have you send your pen to me here in Australia and I will repair it if i can.
Mine has been 100% since I did this...

This sounds like an individual problem. For if the Note was faulty as described then it would have been noticed by the 80% in the poll here who like me think the note is pretty perfect.

Atleast it is fixable without the exhorbitant price asked for for a replacement stylus.

Thus the S-Pen is one of my keys in the decision and it did disappoint me:
I tried writing some text in the S-note app and when ever I finished a word and raised the pen the line is still drawn further and thus the text was not quite readable.
Same happens when I use the handwriting field at the bottom (instead of the screen keyboard). Then due to the lines being drawn further when the pen does not touch the screen, the recognition puts together the words.
So I think the problem is facing on many devices.
Does anyone ever get a better / more in-details answer from Samsung? Or should we one by one contact their support?

I contacted "Samsung Exclusive Italy" but they simply told me that check for this problem and recall me. I Never received a call from them.
Thanks to heelerdog for the tutorial, but i dont understand well english, and without some pics I'm afraid to break the S-pen
I got a used galaxy note in tip top condition and decided to apply a new clear screen protector. My only problem is that each and everytime I use my SPen with any kind of pressure (except the really really light ones) my screen protector gets scratched! This is absolutely appalling and my screen protector is the same brand I always use for all my phones which I have never had a problem before. I've read on the forums about some people claiming that the Spen should not scratch the screen because it was designed for that BUT I tried out another Spen on my note and it didn't leave a single mark! Now I'm left thinking that my pen was probably modified or damaged or something but it looks pristine in all angles.
Are there samsung ICS roms that have the home button lag / double click feature disabled? I'm running rocket rom and can't seem to find it.
Lastly, can anyone try sliding their finger and applying pressure on the home button on the left or right hand side? I tried it on mine and I could have sworn the whole button slopes down and this is making me worried.
Ok, so I thought I was having a touch sensitivity problem on my Nexus 4, because often a touch or a swipe would go unrecognized...
Then I realized I was noticing it especially in these two situations:
-Turning wifi slider switch on/off
-Swiping back to a previous tab in chrome
Turns out, what was going on was when I reached that far with the thumb, my palm was touching the curved edge of the screen, making it think I was already touching with a different finger. This "numbed" the screen from my intended touch until I shifted my hand slightly, releasing the unintended multi-touch situation. This made the issue seem sporadic.
I am not saying this is what all other people are experiencing, I am just putting it out there in case someone else is unknowingly doing the same thing. I could also imagine typing errors on the far side of the keyboard for people with certain hand shapes.
It seems almost unavoidable due to the thin bezel and rounded edge, but I would think problem could be avoided with some clever "palm touch near edge" recognition code, but until then I just have to get used to not gripping the phone so tight.

I think that might be the case also. In some instances, it seems like I can't tap on the screen, but it can swipe and if I reposition my hand, it will work.
I only got this phone couple of days back and I am having a strange problem.
After installing a screen guard, touch stops working when phone is lying on flat surface. Once I lift the phone, touch starts working again. This happens regardless of the phone is plugged or not in a power socket.
Removing screen guard resolves this issue. However, I installed three different screen guards of glass, plastic and rubber types and with each type touch stops working on a flat surface.
I also did a factory reset but it didn't help. I tried with case on and off but the problem still persists.
At this point I am clueless how to resolve this issue as the phone doesn't seem to be defective as touch works flawlessly without a screen guard.

With glass screen protector I have this issue... Can't really use it while device lying on a table.
Hi... Same here also... I thought the screen problem but not even lying on the table but when in charging lying on the table also can't touch... And sometimes it's stuck when to touch... My nokia 6 i think also like that... Maybe the screen curve is??
I have screen protector bought from Taobao, no such problem on my Nokia 8, TA-1004.
The screen protector is not glass type, but looks like plastic type.
Another strange observation: If I plug headphone jack when the phone is lying on flat surface, touch starts working again.
I suspect this entire thing has to do with metal/glass body of the phone and static electricity generated or magnetic field around touch panel.
I don't have much knowledge on this type of scientific stuff so I am not sure what the problem is.
It's the cheap glass protector and its glue that is messing up the touch screen.

I thought so. But what about headphone jack fixing touch issues with screen protector on?
Also, I have used similar quality screen guards on Moto and Huawei phones at my home and they don't have this issue.

Are you connecting it to headphones or speakers?
Maybe the capacitive buttons doesn't like the glue and messes up everything? You could try enabling these in the Developer Options: Show taps & Pointer location. Let me know what is happening

Headphones.
Enabled taps and pointer location. When phone is not touching a flat surface everything works fine. A curve is drawn on screen showing various gestures and a circle is drawn to show taps.
When lying on flat surface, if I use any touch gestures (e.g. scrolling) curve is drawn once in 5-6 attempts. Same with taps, circles appear only once in a while.
It is all very erratic. When I repeatedely try to tap anything, I receive ghost touces at a different part of screen.
Just noticed that I don't need headphone jack to fix touch. Blocking 3.5 mm port with one finger also works. This is truly getting weird.
Have you shown it to the Service Centre? Do they have any theories?

No, since the phone works perfectly without screen guard, I think service center guys will simply tell me to use it without a screen guard.
But I will indeed show them this problem after few days, though I am not sure they will understand or will be helpful in this regard.
I think I am reaching somewhere. The antenna reception at the top might be messing with touch.
What I have observed that touching the top of the phone or keeping any object or my hand one inch away from top of the phone fixes touch issues.
If I remove the object or move it farther than one inch, touch becomes messy again.
If I put little pressure on bottom chin of the phone, the top of the phone raises a bit so that the top antenna is not close to flat surface any more. This also fixes touch issues. Lowering top part of the phone brings back touch issues.
Anyone else with this issue can test this?

I found that many phones had these issues in past including oneplus, lg, sony and galaxy phones. Everywhere it was mentioned that it is a grounding issue which is unfortunately a hardware detect.
My phone is fortunately within replacement window. So I will contact the seller and request for a replacement.
I was thinking about the grounding, but when you mentioned you used headphones i thought it couldn't be the case.
Keep us updated if you get it replaced.

I don't know what to do now. No other phones in my family have this problem and that includes $200 budget devices. This is flagship and much more costly.
I will just summarize different cases in which the touch issues on a flat surface gets fixed on my device:
- Inserting headphone jack (with screen gaurd applied on display).
- Inserting charging cable (with screen guard applied on display).
- Touching any part of the phone with finger including blocking the headphone jack (with screen guard applied).
- Removing the screen guard.
I am tired of this sh*t. I have tried all things possible to fix it. I have also wasted money on 6 different screen guards to fix this issue.
Some guys on galaxy s8 forums mentioned that modern curved phones uses a touchscreen placement mechanism different than traditional smartphones (they were also having the same problem).
There were two possible solutions mentioned:
Find a screen guard that has glue all over, not just around the edges or at dots. Which means that screen guard should stick to the screen 100% flat without any gap, air or bubbles.
Second solution was to use a flip cover to protect the screen and no screen guard.
I will go with second solution and buy a flip cover. I simply have no energy left to hunt for screen guards that work properly on Nokia 8. Not to say that you will never know if it works or not unless you purchase it and stick on your phone.
Hi, I'm writing from Italy and I've the same problem, exactly the same problem, solvable with the same solutions you have proposed: remove the protective film (a glass screen guard in my case).
I'm noticing that the touch screen works perfectly with the protective film only if the phone is connected via USB cable to the battery charger or to the pc.
