Hi,
This thread is to report custom themes issues - as I noticed currently available themes (working fine on EMUI 8.0 phones) are partially incompatible with EMUI 8.1 on our P20 phones.
Known issues (EMUI 8.1 vs EMUI 8.0):
- sms app is no longer supported (there is no longer Huawei sms app - Google Messages instead, completly inconsistent with EMUI design...)
- some (not all) custom screen locks are not working
- custom settings menu icons are not visible (only default ones)
- general issue with non-system app icons - most of them are not changing with theme (even if there is custom icon inside theme)
- custom status bar and notifications are not working
I received my P20 today, so i'll update above list during my tests. If you notice any not listed issue - let me know, i will add it.
I'll try to find a solutions for that issues - but of course any help is appreciated
Life saver!
I've been playing around with the themes and noticed my notifications had disappeared from the lock screen. I had assumed it was another setting I'd changed by mistake, but couldn't find what I'd done.
Found this thread last night, stuck the theme back to Romance, and the notifications are back!

But you can use custom theme with standard lock screen - and notifcations should appear
Any custom lockscreens that work with notifications? I tried a few but none display spotify lockscreen controls. I ask because I'd prefer a lockscreen with the clock at the top instead of the bottom like the magazine theme.

Try lockscreen from my SimpleP theme - there is a clock in the top and spotify controls work
I have the same problem. I tried some custom themes and now, no matter what theme I choose, notifications won't expand, I can only read notification first line. And yes, with some custom themes, notifications won't show at all.
@mr.mrcn I can't find SimpleP theme

It is in my app (link is in the signature). But notifications in this lock screen don't expand either.
They are not expanding for me as well, seems like a stupid bug (much like no synchronized volumes with Bluetooth audio devices)
EMUI 8.1 ignores all xml images in custom themes, they are displayed by default.

Not quite true, in my theme are all icons changed, and some other stuff too. I don't have much time to look around, but some paths of icons are different from previous versions. Will try with png's and new folder paths. ???

Because all icons are round and there is no special mask in this icon pack Look at my screenshot - there is a mask, but for unknown reason is not applied to some icons (like gmail, slack, whatsapp..), but for other it is (facebook, telegram..).

Some files in the theme are now overlooked by the system (EMUI 8.1).

Do you think this will be fixed soon?
Probably Huawei actually wants it like this, I think they would've fixed it already

I think not..they would not include a theme engine if they do not want customers to change the look of it..but that is my opinion

You can still change UI colors and drawer icons... Maybe they just want you to do it/they want developers to optimize their themes for the p20/p20 pro before allowing them to change navbar icons/notification tab icons and stuff, at least imo
No Status Bar for me at all, tried Factory reset, the same.
Hi,
I'm wondering if there is a way to get a stock Android/Pixel like looking notification and quick setting panel/menu for EMUI 9.1 (I just like its simple icon style and the darker background compared to the particularized bright EMUI appearance).
Something like that is what I'm looking for.
I already found some information on launchers etc., but it doesn't seem to affect the panel in the top:
https://blog.en.uptodown.com/simulate-android-stock-huawei-emui
https://theunlockr.com/huawei-p20-stock-android/
This XDA icon pack does not seem to yield the desired results either (regular app icons are changing, not the top panel though).
Thanks for some info
The only way is to use PowerShade.
It creates an overlay on top of the stock notification panel.

We have to wait untill EUMI 9.1 themes will be available. 9.0/9.0.1 themes are not compatible.

Alright, I tried these kind of apps now and it doesn't really seem to be of any convenience. A lot of system permissions have to be set and then it only works for the drop down menu, but not the actual notification panel at the top.
Thanks though!

Sorry but this is all new to me. You mean we just have to wait until a custom made Android-like looking theme pops up in huawei's theme gallery?
I'm not sure if this is what you're after, but I really like this theme, and it gives dark notifications and volume slider...

Yes, right. There is no other way to change it. Some custom themes compatible with emui 9.1 are already on line.

So, i found the problem, look really strange but, looks like turn off MIUI Optimization in developer settings change icons shape, at least 3rd party ones! So, i fount that after reflash the whole ROM again...good, a tons of settings and changes to made to put them like i want but at least found the culprit!
Hope Xiaomi do a update to fix this, since i dont know why and how MIUI Optimization can affect icons shape, and this dont make sense at all!

Thankyou, that fixed it and also fixed the leftmenu first panel in homescreen where by trying to expand it was causing a weird visual bug where, now that i can see it normally, was basically trying to expand it but keeping the bounds of the original panel, therefore just spreading the icons inside. Now everything seems working fine.
Also reverting it back on active is not causing the bug to reappear.
Xiami Mi9 t pro (right out of the box literally opened it 3 days ago)
After update to MIUI 11.0.3.0 on Mi MIX 3 happened to me as well on stock ROM. Turning off optimization also helped.
God thank you, sun_is_shinning. I already tweaked the hell of themes and icons with no result. Now I want to use my phone again.
Also in that update they did something to animations so they became annoyingly slow. I made all the animations 0.5x in developer options and it became less annoying but some apps relying on it are now showing ridiculously fast animations but it's bearable.
Hi, I cant find this "MIUI Optimization" menu in developer settings.
MIUI 11.2
help bro is there any alternative way to fix the square icon ? other than flashing whole rome
Hi,
Well I like the Official Miui rom but some functions I loved got removed by xiaomi so I finally want to break out.
I want to actually use the Notification Logs that came with Android 11 (don't know why xiaomi removed it) and I miss the option to set the priority of notifications. I used this one a lot because I had some notifications I wanted to see when I pull down the bar, but I don't need to see the icon all the time.
Also more customization would be nice...
So I'm asking you here, wich ROM comes the closest to a stock android experience or wich ROM is the 'best' one.
Thank you and have a nice day!

Without hesitation:
https://xiaomi.eu/community/
or
https://one.revtechs.me/en/index
there's Pixel Experience which are the same as Pixel phones, HentaiOS which are heavily tuned for great user experience, or Evox if you want more customization than barebone. LineageOS are similar to AOSP. There's so many ROMs to try, really.
I know about the double-line clock option in the settings but it's still ugly for me. I want to completely remove the clock and that small widget from the lockscreen. Is there any way to do that?
Also is there a way to customize the lockscreen? I've heard of klck but it seems like this doesn't customize the lockscreen but just creates another lockscreen on top of the original lockscreen? I don't want to go through two lockscreens in order to unlock my phone.
For now you can't remove the clock since the module for custom clock isnt working in pixel a13, but you can customize it a little with aosp mods, i've added custom text below date, custom text that replace operator and bottom shortcut. nothing more for now

Dang. Just have to wait then. Thank you very much for the reply! Would you know which module it would be once it eventually (hopefully) gets updated?

Yes, follow Madness/Kodansha/Mayhem on telegram. All are substratum themes that changes clock and more. Madness is paid on play store, Kodansha have both version free and paid (if i dont remember wrong) and mayhem is totally free and have amazing system/status bar icons to choose from.
