Question Google search box on home screen - Google Pixel 7

Just wondering if there was an ADB command to uninstall the google app and give the search box the boot. Rather not use Nova launcher.

Why not just use lawnchair or any other launcher?

I did some digging a while back and the conclusion was that it is not possible to disable or uninstall the launcher with stock firmware. I also have not found any custom ROMs that explicitly state that it can be done, but it's possible some of the ROM developers could have a solution.
It is my understanding that the launcher is an integral part of Android, and cannot be fully uninstalled, but is instead hidden and running in the background by default on other Android devices.

Oh yeah, there might also be a Magisk module out there that can hide the launcher. Something to look into.

If rooted Pixel Launcher Mods can hide the search bar but that method leaves an empty space (for a widget) rather than shifting things around. I prefer a different launcher even if it means losing functionality baked into Pixel Launcher.

With Unicon and Xposed, can you undo changes?

I've currently got the 24A "manual OTA" installed on my G2 / VS980, rooted. After having used Apex and Nova over the last couple of years, I've gotten to like the LGHome stock launcher for a change. Some nice themes coming out, but I miss the ability to use some of the custom icon packs that I've used on Apex and Nova. Seems that, if I stay on the stock launcher, unless I want to replace each icon individually through the launcher, the primary option left to me is Xposed with Unicon.
My questions for those of you who have used it on the G2:
1) Any problems / issues? Any downside at all to using Xposed with Unicon? (responsiveness, battery, etc?)
2) Having selected an icon pack and allowed Unicon to update all icons in the phone, is there anything like an "undo" or "revert" capability? In the pictures, I saw what looked like an option to select the "system default" icon set -- with the LG Home Launcher, does this effectively restore whatever icons you had been using before running Unicon (based on whatever LG stock launcher theme you had selected, along with stock app icons)?
thanks in advance for any input on this.
@jonstrong
I've used Unicon for a long time. But only on AOSP ROMs because that's basically all I run. I've never once had an issue with it. It doesn't affect battery or cause any lag. The system default is like an undo switch. It just makes all the icons stock again. Basically what Unicon does is just inject the icons into individual apps while Xposed is active. You can uninstall Xposed and they go back to normal too. BUT...using Xposed without a custom recovery can be risky, because if the phone bootloops then you don't have a way to flash the Xposed disabler. There's a failsafe built in with Xposed now that disables it with some button combination, but I'm not sure exactly how to do it. If all else fails you can flash back to stock, but that a little bit of a pain.

Android launcher in NookColor Tools

Hi there,
I just installed NC Tools in my NSTG (to support keyboard switching) and I spotted a nice simple launcher in there as part of the menu options. Is it a hidden system launcher, and how can I set it up to be my default launcher?
Thank you for your help

It's actually the Nook Color stock launcher (located at /system/app/Launcher.apk) which B&N didn't bother to remove when creating the NST/NSTG firmware, just like Music.apk and Gallery.apk. I've done extensive testing with it to get it to launch on "n" button tap, and have come up short every time. The Android System's launcher chooser dialog doesn't recognize it, ADW and ReLaunch's app drawers don't recognize it, and Nook Touch Mod Manager doesn't recognize it, either.
The good thing is, that launcher is so bad performance-wise compared to, say, ADW EX, that you really aren't missing out on anything. However, if you'd like to try it just for proof-of-concept, you can launch it in a shell using this command:
Code:
am start -n com.android.launcher/.Launcher
Ha!
The primary reason why i'd have used it is to save ram space and battery. But now that I know it's not the case, there is no point even trying
Thanks for replying, nookie

[Q] Custom shortcuts on TouchWiz launcher?

Been messing around with null ROM for a day now and I've decided I like TouchWiz better
But soon after I turn the Gear on all my custom apps disappear from the TouchWiz apps folder and so I have to launch Apex to access any of them
Is there any way to keep them there or add them to the home screen? All the apps installed by null ROM stay there; Root browser, SuperSU, etc
What if I install the apps I want on the home screen via custom recovery?
Edit: Actually found out they disappear from the TouchWiz apps drawer when you get a Bluetooth connection

I think there's a build prop edit that's in a guide somewhere on here by fOmey.. How come you prefer touch whiz? I'm using nova with chrooma live wallpaper. Looks pretty cool and the launcher gives me all the customisation I could want

I just like the movement and gestures on it as well as the more sleek look, while a normal launcher does work fine it looks fiddly to me. Plus I like having the watch face up front and center, I use WatchStyler. If I were to use a watch face on a launcher I'd have to get rid of the dock which makes getting more apps a bit fiddly
Edit: Did find the thread you were talking about http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2606999
Unfortunately it's only for rooted phones, and that's just not possible for me on my Fire Phone right now
https://plus.google.com/106975101901250307319/posts/1v9cVdXYiQ6
That's what my watch currently looks like. I use a nova launcher prime gesture to hide the dock. I'm using an old version of gmd gesture control to hide the status bar and control gestures in app.
I don't use watch style anymore because I didn't like the battery drain. The watch face is stock just long press on the launcher and add widget. When I've time I'll create a better one with zooper. Been busy working on voice control with the gear, I use it to remote control ok Google on my phone.
Can you use android apps on the fire phone? Tasker is massively important to my setup!
That looks pretty nice, if I start having battery problems I might switch over
Yeah the Fire just has Amazon's own Android OS, so it can use any apps, and thanks to a recent update you can actually use the Google Play Store
The only thing I've been having trouble with is Bluetooth tethering, it doesn't have it by default so I've been trying to use PdaNet, but it's not really a big deal
Actually just been messing around with Apex and found how to hide the drawer, so it's quite nice, but it seems WatchStyler is still incompatible with it :'(
Otherwise might switch to it

Have you read any of the tasgear threads? There's one in the general section and one in the themes and apps section. It takes the watch to a whole new level! I can't stress how useful tasker is with the gear and being able to run it on both phone and watch makes the gear unique.
Well I'm not very well versed in these things, but I've come this far, got the threads saved so I'll take a look

Hiding apps in app drawer

Hi,
is there any possibilty to hide apps in app drawer like in Tab S1?
No, there's no functionality in S2's TouchWIz launcher dedicated specifically to that.
Yet some apps can be "disabled", as you probably noticed. When you drag an app from the app drawer, at the top of the screen you sometimes see an option to "disable" the app (as opposed to uninstalling it). This is not applicable to all apps though.
Another alternative in TouchWiz is to create a separate drawer folder (say, "Annoying") and moving all undesired application icons into that folder. That does not completely "hide" them, but at least gets them out of the way and reduces clutter in the drawer.
However, if you want full flexibility in this regard, then forget about using the default TouchWiz launcher. Install Nova Launcher (or some other launcher, if you prefer something else) and use it instead of TouchWiz. In Nova you can freely hide apps from the app drawer (withous "disabling" or uninstalling them).

Are you saying you can't? Which rom version?

I can turn off apps but not hide them.

Launcher?

Hi all,
What is the best launcher to install ?
The two things I want are to be able to hide apps, and to have to swipe up to access app drawer as opposed to having an icon for it.
I have tried a couple but the p20 original launcher always ends up taking over. Or with the Lawn launcher for some reason I could add the time/weather widget.
Thanks
Try Ruthless pixel launcher from XDA labs. (If it crashes go to settings and enable storage permission; Bug with pixel launchers on huawei phones)

Cheers, can you remove the Google search bar at bottom screen or is that there all the time? If so I'll download later!

Silly questions then.
I can't find in the settings:
Get rid of Google assistant on home page, and hide the useless apps in the app drawer I don't want to see?
Cheers!

It's right there in dock settings. "Bottom search bar" Disable the feed in the bottom of "At a glance" settings.
To hide apps simply long press, edit and tick hide app icon.

On the at a glance I only have the attached. And long pressing an app only gives me app info or some generic options?
Long press the homescreen to access settings. You sure you got the right app?

Apparently not ha.
I have now, cheers! Does the date at the top pick up the weather when it syncs or will I need to download a new widget for date and weather in one?
Also how do you go about downloading different icon packs that will work with the launcher ?
Thanks for your help
Nova, Evie...there are many out there but these are my favorites. Huawei widgets don't seem to work on any custom launcher.
Evie Launcher has been my favorite for a really long time and matches both of your requirements. Plus, the ability to change Icon pack not only by pack but also one by one is a big plus. Smooth, clean and minimalistic and has a couple of cool features.

For me the best launcher which i always go back to is LawnChair and it's Google feed add-on.
It's a lot like the Pixel launcher but has a lot more settings.
Icon size, theming, weather provider, gestures, app hiding etc.
It's rapid too and fluid, and it's free
Make sure the launcher is set as the default one, if the 2nd launcher in use crashes then the only thing the system can do is revert back, if you're using lawnchair, use the latest version.
I have it installed and mine never reverts back.
Another way would be if you were rooted you could freeze the original launcher in titanium.
CPL wins hands down.

Late to the party
Most customizable. No contest
Total launcher.

Steep learning curve though
Long time on my previous phones I used Nova and Apex launcher. For 2 years now I am using Microsoft Launcher which supports icon notifications for free and I must say I'm still returning to it. I tried Evie launcher on my P20 Pro but for some reason it consumed the battery a lot. Microsoft launcher does not consume battery at all (always like 1 mAh <), its fast and stable, modern looking but different compared to "stock android looking" launchers.

I use Nova Launcher, as it gives me everything I need. If you have problems with reverting to the stock launcher you can try to lock the new launcher in resent
See this screen recording to know how
keeps on recovery from crashing all the time, ive changed the permissions as stated above as well
I use Nova, bought the prime when it was on sale awhile back for $0.50
Nova forever,
