Installing Magisk v25.2 on Google Pixel (sailfish) on Android 10 - Magisk

Hi guys,
I'm trying to install Magisk v25.2 on my old Google Pixel (sailfish) that's on the latest Android 10 stock ROM. My bootloader is unlocked, and I tried to install TWRP unsuccessfully, and then I read that the new Magisk v25.2 can be installed directly from the app. Is that true? If so, how?
Thanks.

Well, you should follow this tutorial right here: https://topjohnwu.github.io/Magisk/install.html
The "complicated" part is getting an image file you need from your device. For example, on my phone, the OP6 I have two possibilities: I need the boot partition, so I can do two things. Either extract the latest version of the ROM I'll be using and extract the payload.bin using a program to get the boot.img, or, through some CLI magic, I can boot TWRP and inside of its terminal get the boot image file right from the currently installed system using `dd`.
All of this depends on your device and what the Magisk app initially reports to you.

Happened with me also...i gues the only solution is you have to uninstall mafisk via magisk uninstaller and flash it once again via whatever recovery you are using...i am also using lineage os 15.1 but with RN4....
Happened to me as well. HTC u11, ViperU 1.8.0, Android 7.1.1, TWRP 3.2.2. Tried flashing it though TWRP got a bootloop. Had to revert back to my previous nan which luckily I made yesterday.
I attempted the same, now my galaxy s6 is in a boot loop
Look other posts in this section - you should flash latest uninstaller before Magisk v17 package. It seems that some residues from v16 prevent v17 from installing correctly.

I had to reflash stock (OTA sideload version, in stock recovery) via adb sideload. Essential phone. Wifi is working now, didn't lose any data.
I'm also having the issue on my OnePlus 5T. I was running v16.0, and when I tried to flash the v17.1 zip in TWRP like usual, but it said zip signature verification failed. I flashed the Magisk uninstaller zip and tried again, but still had the same problem. I've lost root, but all my data is still intact and it never had boot issues.
After using uninstaller in recovery, restart into recovery to flash v17

Code:
adb install MagiskManager-v5.9.1.apk
if you get a error message like
the sign with the installed apk has not matsched..aborted

Does anyone have a working solution?
1.download magisk 17.zip from inside magisk 16
2. uninstall magisk 16 (i do from inside, not twrp)
3. instal magisk 17.zip from twrp
4. open magisk 17 and get notification for downloaded magisk 17.apk
5. download and instal it,

How I recovered from this on a Pixel 2 XL
I'll chime in with my experience here, as it might save someone else a lot of time if they are at my skill level with this stuff (which is only moderate, I suppose, although I do always get things to work eventually!).
As of yesterday, I had a Pixel 2 XL, rooted with Magisk, and working great. This morning, during the middle of the night, Magisk innocently asks if I want to upgrade to a new version. I was very tired (in fact, I think I was sleeping when my phone buzzed to alert me of the upgrade message) and don't even know how I responded except that it was "yes" to the upgrade part. By the time I'd fully awakened, I had a phone that waw in a boot loop. I went back to sleep, figuring I'd have better luck looking at it after a little rest.
Getting out of the boot loop was easy: I just reinstalled the August 2018 factory image for the phone. However, getting Magisk reinstalled was an adventure. I saw posts that said I should run the Magisk uninstaller, but when I did it just said that Magisk was already uninstalled. And yet, whenever I tried to apply either v16.0 or v17.1, I got errors (error codes 1, 2, and 255 at different times).
Up until this event, I'd always upgraded Magisk by installing it via TWRP. However, that was not working, so I thought I needed to try patching the boot image, something I'd never done before. Because I'd never done it before, it took me a while to understand the steps, which are actually quite simple. This is where I'm hoping I might save someone some time. Basically, my fear was not knowing which file the "boot image" was. Seasoned Android veterans might get a chuckle out of this, and that's fine, but I was looking at the file in the factory image download and basically saw only two image files: bootloader-taimen-tmz20j.img and radio-taimen-g8998-00253-1805232234.img. I was trying to figure out if either of those could be the boot image, and they both seemed pretty big to be a boot image! Finally it dawned on me that the much larger file in the directory was a zip archive (named image-taimen-ppr1.180610.009.zip). I looked inside there, and sure enough, there was a rather small file named boot.img. I was pretty sure that was the "boot image" file!
Here's what I did after that, again just hoping to help anyone who finds themselves in the same predicament I was in: Magisk is broken, root isn't working, and I can't install any of the Magisk *.zip images via TWRP.
- First, I downloaded a copy of Magisk Manager: this version is named MagiskManager-v5.9.1.apk.
- Next, I ran a couple adb commands to send the Magisk Manager apk and the stock boot.img to my phone:
Code:
adb push MagiskManager-v5.9.1.apk /sdcard/Download
adb push boot.img /sdcard/Download
- Next, I installed /sdcard/Download/Magisk-Manager-v5.9.1.apk by nagivating to it (I use ES File Manager) and launching it from there.
- Next I opened Magisk Manager
- Magisk Manager detects that there is a newer version available and asks if I want to upgrade
- I said yes
- I told it that I wanted to patch a boot image
- I chose /sdcard/Download/boot.img as the "unpatched" (stock) boot image
- Magisk Manager churned away for maybe half a minute and then produced a new file called patched_boot.img, saved in the same directory as boot.img.
After that, all I had to do was run these commands:
Code:
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot flash boot patched_boot.img
fastboot reboot
As soon as the phone restarted, I opened Magisk Manager again and it verified that its upgrade was successful, and root began working for me again also.
Like I said, I hope this helps someone else. If not, it's probably good for me to just write it all out anyway.
Cheers,
Sky Captain

I too have a Pixel 2XL but had a much easier upgrade experience. I downloaded the latest version of Magisk files (3 files: MagiskManager-v5.9.1.apk, Magisk-uninstaller-20180901, and Magisk-v17.1 from here https://www.xda-developers.com/magisk-v17-1-android-pie-a-b-support/) and put them on my phone.
Rebooted into recovery TWRP run the Magisk-uninstaller-2018090 file, then ran Magisk-v17.1 rebooted and all worked (thanks to ALL the developers out there!!!)
I'm running rooted Pie (standard google Pie) with Rootchecker, 4.4.153-FlashKernal-Wahoo-v3.06, Greenify, AdAway, and of course Magisk 17.1.
Hope this helps.

If patch boot image is getting failed in magisk latest version v17.1 then enable storage permission for magisk app manually in Device/OS setting. Now patch boot image again, It will get patched successfully.

Question How To Update System While Keeping Magisk

I have several modules in Magisk app and couple of apps having root authority after get root with Magisk (like Tasker). Now I want to update system while keeping my magisk apps and root-to-use apps working without any risk of stucking in reboot after install a new ROM.
Could I just firstly patch the boot.img of objective ROM in Magisk, replace the boot.img with magisk_pathed_XXXX.img and flash all the .img files needed? Will this way work? Or any other ways?
while flashing a newer rom version, the magisk modules are not deleted. After flashing the new version install magisk again and everything is working well. Before updatating the rom version "restore hide magisk by itself" if you have enabled it.
If you have modules like SmaliPatcher - These will cause a bootloop after update.
Disable all modules before any update and make sure to Restore the Magisk App if its hidden.

I take from your description that you are flashing a fastboot ROM. In that case you are correct, i.e.
take boot.img from new ROM, patch in Magisk and copy back into the original installation folder. Simplest is to rename the original boot image and name the new magisk boot image: boot.img
now you can simply start the installation batch and it will automatically install the magisk-patched boot.img
If you are using TWRP to flash the ROM this is not needed, just flash the corresponsing magisk installation ZIP/APK in TWRP right after the system update and BEFORE rebooting.
In addition @JazonX gave a good advice , but it really depends on which modules you use.

How To Guide (Guide) Rooting, payload dumper, magisk_patched guides NE2213

Hi all,
Thought i'd share a guide on how to get these boot images yourself as well as all the files required, plus the patched boot.img if you just want to go ahead and boot/flash it without obtaining one yourself
Please read the process before committing to proceeding, so you know what's required and what you should and shouldn't use!
Stock and patched images are UK/ EU NE2213 but the guides are universal and could be used on multiple devices.
NOTE:
For these guides the versions used are:
Stable, Canary or BETA depending on firmware, simply change the channel in Magisk settings then select install / update:

Magisk Manager v24.3 (24300) Stable
NE2213_11_A.13
Magisk Manager v24.3 (24300) Stable
NE2213_11_A.14
Magisk Manager v25 (25000) Stable this version retains root after a restart, more stable version over previous iterations.
NE2213_11_A.16
Magisk Manager v25.2 (25200) Stable

1st
Extracting a boot.img using Fastboot Enhance
Pre-requisites
A device with a working version of magisk manager installed, simply change the channel to the version outlined in the list above relevant to your firmware then select install / update:
A Windows 10 computer / laptop
A full update downloaded firmware zip for your model (recommend oxygen updater)
Payload dumper program for Windows.
An unlocked bootloader.
The local System Update Installer : normal local system update will not allow a reboot during installation, the one I've linked will.
Process
On your computer
1. Download and copy the fastboot enhance folder to your desktop or a location of your choosing.
Download from here: https://github.com/libxzr/FastbootEnhance/releases
2. Download the firmware of your choice (always use full zips, not incremental) and open it using Winrar or a similar zip program, extract the file called payload.bin to a folder of your choosing.
3. Run the program FastbootEnhance.exe, a window will appear, click Payload Dumper, then click browse and point to the payload.bin file, the contents of that payload.bin will now be shown, bare in mind you'll need to check the box "Allow incremental" even if it's a full zip
4. One of the files will be called boot.img, this is the file we'll be patching, click extract then copy this to your phone, root of storage which is called /sdcard.
On your phone
5. Open up Magisk and click Install / Update, if you don't see update then change channel, do this by changing the channel in magisk settings, it'll then show the install/ update buttons.
6. Select "Select and Patch a file" it'll open up a file browser, navigate to the boot.img you copied earlier and select it, allow it to complete (this will output a file called "magisk_patched" which will be output into the Downloads folder)
You now have a patched boot.img ready to boot or flash to either slot with fastboot or boot via fastboot.
I would recommend booting as this is risk free, if it's a bad image for whatever reason and you choose to flash then your phone will bootloop.
NOTE** Some people have noticed that an already patched boot.img when flashed can fail and cause a boot loop when flashed, so if you have downloaded a magisk_patched img from somewhere else then you WILL need to re-patch it on your own device preferably using the afore mentioned magisk manager based on what firmware it's from.
If you intend to follow the guide below with your own patched img then you shouldn't need to patch it twice but it won't hurt if you do.
2nd
Update from XX stable to XX+ stable whilst retaining root
Guide
**NOTE- Although this may work, the system may be unstable, especially when changing bases, eg: Android 11-12 or 12-13, so if you encounter strange behaviour then a factory wipe is advised.
1. Download the relevant firmware for your device via oxygen updater
2. Open Magisk and remove all the modules you have installed, then reboot
**NOTE- At this point I tend to copy out the whole firmware to my computer, incase I need it in the future, the boot img and patched boot img are at the foot of this guide, I'll always upload the latest firmware as soon as it comes out for the UK/EU model
3. Install the OnePlus local install apk listed below in downloads. Click the cog and select "Local Upgrade" the file should be listed on screen, if not then move the file to the root of your phones storage.
4. Click install and allow it to go through the process
**NOTE- DO NOT REBOOT AT THIS POINT YOU WILL LOSE THE ABILITY TO PATCH ON THE FLY, SIMPLY BACK OUT OF THE SCREEN WHICH SAYS "INSTALLATION COMPLETED. RESTART TO EXPERIENCE NEW FEATURES"
5. Open up magisk and click install (you may see two install buttons, top one is magisk and the bottom is magisk manager, we need the top one)
6. You'll be faced with a screen that has several options, you want to select "Install to Inactive slot (After OTA)" then select "LET'S GO" once complete click reboot.
7. Once your phones booted back up your system / files should all remain as they were and you should have root access.
You can now install all your modules again so long as they're compatible with the firmware you've just updated to.
3rd
Rooting using fastboot commands
Method 1
Booting the patched image
1. Obtain a patched boot image for your device variant preferably using payload dumper or download one of mine from the foot of this guide or if you've just performed the above guide you should already have a functional one, copy this file to your fastboot folder on your computer
**NOTE - The above suggested downloads are for the EU / UK variant- if you have another model / firmware please use that instead, If you did not obtain the boot.img from a firmware and patch it yourself, you will need to patch it again in magisk manager to avoid a bootloop, if you still get a bootloop it's best to obtain one yourself using the guide at the top of this post.
2. Reboot your phone to fastboot
and connect to your computer.
3. Boot the magisk patched img
fastboot boot magisk_patched (or name of your patched boot img)
Your phone should now boot automatically, you should now be rooted but we need to make this permanent, if you were to reboot you would lose root.
4. Open magisk manager and click install/update, if you are missing the install/ update buttons, change magisk version to beta in magisk settings and install the update, the buttons should then show.
5. Select Direct install (recommended) then click ok.
6. Allow magisk to permanently root your device then click reboot.
You should now boot and remain rooted.
Method 2
Flashing to both slots
1. Obtain a patched boot img for your device variant or download one of mine from the foot of this guide or if you've just performed the above guide you should already have a functional one, copy this file to your fastboot folder on your computer
**NOTE - Again the above suggested downloads are for the EU/ UK variant- if you have another model / firmware please use that instead, if you did not obtain the boot.img from a firmware and patch it yourself, you will need to patch it again in magisk manager, to avoid a bootloop
2. Reboot your phone to fastboot and connect to your computer.
Command: adb reboot bootloader
3. Open a command prompt on your computer and navigate to your ADB/fastboot folder.
4. Type the following.
fastboot flash boot_a magisk_patched
Press enter.
fastboot flash boot_b magisk_patched
Press enter
fastboot reboot
Press enter
6. Your phone should now boot, open magisk and verify you're rooted.
Troubleshooting
If flashing succeeds but you don't have root and you've followed all the instructions, you may have some magisk modules still active, try performing the following.
1. Connect your phone to your computer.
2. Reboot the phone, then during the boot animation enter this command via ADB.
adb wait-for-device shell magisk --remove-modules
3. Allow to boot, modules will be removed and root should then be active.
If there is no magisk install / update buttons.
1. Make sure you have granted permission to magisk in settings / apps / magisk / permissions
2. Make sure that the update channel is on canary, then force close magisk and then re-open
3. If it still doesn't work then update magisk using canary
4. Last method to check would be to change to the beta channel in magisk settings, then install it.
Or change the update channel, install the version on offer, then change back to canary, install and you should be good to go.
Window's version
Windows 7 will not work with fastboot, please use Windows 10
USB
Use USB 2.0 not 3.0 or 3.1
ADB
These are the files i use for ADB (in the below list) tested these on fresh installs of windows on several windows machines, all win 10
Place them into the root of C so it reads C:\ADB much easier to navigate to that way.
Bootloader unlock
Boot to the bootloader with adb reboot bootloader
type fastboot flashing unlock
Agree to unlock - allow to boot.
If you can't see the device using ADB
Make sure USB Debugging is turned on
Connect your cable to your phone and computer, when asked what you want your phone to do, click on transfer files, a driver will be installed.
After this reconnect your phone and it'll prompt you with a disclaimer with a check box, check the box and click ok, ADB / Fastboot should now work.

Slowly coming around to this phone mate, we desperately need a few custom ROMs..
EvoX on this would be phenomenal.
Nudge nudge @AnierinB
UPDATE: First patched boot image is up, using the latest stable Magisk v24.3 (24300)

I honestly hope so..
I'm having a few issues isolating the correct files to make the center clock Magisk mod, but that's in the works. Will have it done soon hopefully.
OnePlus thought it would be a good idea to get rid of OPSystemUI.apk in place of systemui.apk so maybe more in line with stock android. But we'll see
@galaxys as if my prayers were answered, joined the Evo X TG group and there is now a OnePlus 10 group so it's in the works, seriously hope it's AnierinB, he did so well with the 8 pro.
Literally cannot wait

Oh I've found it.
Hello All,
Very many thanks for your guide. It really helped me root my OP 10 PRO
I was wondering if it is possible to flash my OP ColorOS with OxygenOS EU/UK version you have uploaded?
I copied the 02b0d1b2508744e3a41115aeb274cccf.zip to the root folder and I tried installing via Oxygen Updater using the automatic method, but it fails every time.
If I try installing it manually, I have to download the Oxygen Updater via oxygenos.oneplus.net/OPLocalUpdate_For_Android12.apk.zip and rename to .apk. - I then launch System Update , click on settings and it says 'Move installation package into root directory' (which it is).
Have I missed a step?

Ah was just about to post it mate.
Glad you found it, it's only new but that fact that it's here is brilliant . I'm hoping AnierinB is the dev who makes the rom for the 10.

Honestly mate i'm not sure, you're essentially changing region.
Have you looked into fastboot enhanced?
You can obtain the firmware from oxygen updater (it's 4.15GB the one i uploaded is only the boot image and patched boot image)
Then copy it to your computer and allow it to flash to your phone.
This isn't without risk mate and i've not done this before myself.

I am hoping too, because in this state oxygen os in this device is bad. Yeah, it is quite new, but hey, it is halfly baked. And not only evo x, but other ROMs I hope will come.

Thanks for your swift reply. I will wait until there is a verified method. For now, I will tread lightly with the rooted version hehe

Magisk root not detected by Magisk Manager 25.2 (25200)(33) after uninstallation of hidden (renamed) Magisk Manager (by mistake)

Hello,
I stuck in quite specific situation. I am using OnePlus 7T Pro (HD1913) with installed the most recent stock Oxygen OS 12.1 MP2 - 11.F.17. EU (Android 12) and Magisk 25.2 (25200)(33) stable release.
What I did I used Magisk hide option and renamed package to random one. After this operation succeeded by mistake I uninstalled Magisk Manager from my device, and that was big mistake. Since I installed Magisk Manager from apk file once again it doesn't detect Magisk root installation anymore. In result installed apps for which there were granted root privileges when Magisk Manager properly detected Magisk Root installation (before hiding operation) still have root privilleges (e.g. Tasker, Total Commander in my configuration). Of course for new apps Magisk Manager behaves like there would be no root so it doesn't ask for granting root privilleges.
What can I do now to make Magisk Manager aware that Magisk root is installed in my system? Is there any way to achieve that (below there is some explanation why it is a bit tricky to root Oxygen OS 12.1 MP2)?
Below there are steps which I already done and some explanation why I cannot simply re-root my device with Magisk package with e.g. TWRP etc.
1. Currently there is no working TWRP compatible with Oxygen OS 12.1 MP2. Whenever I try to perform 'fastboot boot twrp.img' (and many other users confirm that in this forum) bootloader stuck and TWRP is not being loaded. I didn't found any resolution for that. This is the reason why I cannot simply reroot my device with Magisk package again.
2. I tried to extract 'boot.img' from Oxygen OS 12.1 MP2 firmware and used Magisk Manager to patch it. Unfortunately it didn't resolve the issue becasue after command 'fastboot boot patched_magisk_boot.img' Magisk Manager still doesn't detect Magisk root.
3. Before the whole described here issue occurred in order to root my device I had to use Magisk Manager with the last version of Oxygen OS working on Android 11 (rooted with Magisk) and performed patching to inactive slot directly from Magisk Manager just after installation (before reboot) of Oxygen OS 12.1 MP2. This is the only way which worked for me. This is the reason why I cannot simply perform this process again now because I would have to erase all my data / configuration and revert to the previous Oxygen OS.
Thanks
A new APP desktop shortcut will be generated after random naming. Please look for it on your mobile phone
Hi phidix, have you solved the problem? I got into exactly the same trap and still looking for a way out...
It looks like I found the solution.
First, I ensured that I had the latest stock ROM installed without any modifications. For that, I downloaded the official ROM and flashed it manually using the old system updater with the local upgrade option. Just to be on the safe side, I had repeated that twice, so both A and B slots eventually contained the same stock ROM.
Then I installed Cygisk, the same steps as for Magisk (I extracted boot.img from the firmware, patched it with Cygisk and flashed with fastboot).
VoilĂ , my phone reverted to being rooted.

Update lineageos OTA update and keep root access.

Hi
I installed LineageOS 20 on OnePlus 9 with the instructions on official wiki. Then I root my phone with Magisk. I install Magisk by sideloading the Magisk ZIP file and then install the apk as it's been explained in this video. Now I can't update the OS with updater in system settings. I find this guide that explained I need to uninstall and restore images in magisk then update my phone and reinsatall magisk before reboot. But magisk didn't create a backup during installation.
I followed this instructions to fix magisk stock backup does not exist
I create a backup with this guide and lineageos boot.img file and I can now restore images in magisk but I get the same error when trying to install the updates. I noticed that there is also dtbo in backup function and I did the same thing for backing up dtbo.img and it doesn't solve the problem. Is there anything I'm missimg. Should I use vendor-boot.img instead of boot.img?

I just learned that Magisk doesn't work after an OTA update. What I do is I normally update, uninstall Magisk, boot into Lineage Recovery, sideload the Magisk .zip file via ADB, reboot, and finish setting up Magisk through the app. There are other ways to do this, but this method works well and doesn't need anything special. Works for me!
Alteratively, look here.

I was exactly looking for this for my SM-T290, which also runs LineageOS 20. I think it is the most easy to deinstall Magisk root from the Magisk Manager, apply the update and then reinstall it. I think this also works with TWRP???

I'm installing an update right now. I would imagine it works with TWRP as well, but I only recently started using it.
I realize that this may be a late reply, however, there is no need to do any of these convoluted processes.
Here is what I do, flash the Magisk as a .zip in Lineage recovery once and set everything up. Once the Magisk install is working you can apply OTA updates normally without Magisk and root being removed. On my OnePlus 7 Pro which is an A/B device I just install the OTA and hit reboot with Magisk seamlessly persisting and nothing else being required to preserve or reinstall it. The reason that this works is because the Magisk.zip installs an addons.d script which automatically runs after OTA updates and takes care of Magisk for you.
I installed many Lineage OS 20 OTAs and I never had to touch Magisk at all, it is always installed and working with no intervention whatsoever. Keep in mind that this will only work on A/B devices with Lineage recovery (which you should all be using anyway).

Well, I came to the fact I have a problem with TWRP. It uses OpenRecoveryScript for OTA updates and should also run addon.d scripts after it (Magisk uses this to survive an OTA). The only problem is that the scripts should run after the OTA flash, but for me, it doesn't. So I need to manually reflash Magisk and Gapps after installing an update. My data is encrypted, but I edited the addon.d script to flash the ZIP from the external SD card.
