I apologize if this has already been asked; did some searching but didn't really find much.
So I updated my samsung galaxy tab 8.9 wifi to ICS via Kies when the update was released sometime back, not thinking that it would prevent me from being able to root (I know, stupid of me). I always figured Samsung devices were developer friendly, and always had easy ways to root them.
I tried the root instructions posted in all the tutorial posts, and unfortunately they does not work for me (and I presume others). I get a "E:unknown volume for path [/sdcard]" error when trying to access "apply update from external storage" from recovery. I assume this is a change to the bootloader/recovery that Samsung made to prevent unauthorized access (aka, rooting), which is kind of a bummer if you ask me.
When googling for that I found a lot of stuff, but nothing that really told me the best course of action to take for this tablet. Should I hold out for someone to come up with a solution, or would it be best to revert back to 3.2 (if that is even possible), and then "install" the package I saw on the XDA developers front page that gets ICS on the tab with root access. Or is there something else I should do? I've found articles explaining some courses of action, but none explicitly related to the new ICS update that was just released (these were mostly articles referencing the prior 3.2 version).
I realize it was only recently since the update was provided, but any ideas/suggestions would be appreciated. I would like to have root again on ICS if possible!

I just got mine rooted and I had the exact same issues as you. It's basically a broken root, as laid out in the OP of that thread I linked. See the How To section, subcategory Fixing Root.

I have same issue and have thoroughly trawled the referenced threads. Can't access a root zip from recovery and can't flash a recovery from Odin. As a relative newb would really appreciate a step by step idiot's guide

Why not? What goes wrong? What recovery file did you try this with?
Tried various versions of cwm. Odin simply freezes although it has a connection to com6. Stock recovery same issue.
I downloaded the wugfresh tool to try and unlock and root my Nexus 6 used on Verizon but obtained from the Google Play store.
Wugfresh recognizes the device. I have enabled debugging and developer options and have the phone properly set up with the original cable.
When I open wugfresh and after I download the appropriate files, I click on unlock phone and a pop up just says ENCRYPTED.
I tried googling as well as searching this forum and I cannot figure out how to remove encryption without the phone already having been unlocked and reverted back to Lollipop.
Can someone give me a hand? I'm unsure of what to do next.

All the info you need is in the stickies. Many will tell you not to bother with tool kits. This is due to that you wont know how to fix any issues that may come up. It is always best to learn what you are doing. All you re.ally have to do to un-encrypt is to completely wipe the device. Then you need a kernel that doesnt force the encryption

It appears that this would work if my phone was unlocked, but it isn't. I don't yet understand how I can flash anything if my phone is still locked and I don't know how to unlock the phone if the device is still encrypted.
I'm still stuck!

Read the stickies on unlocking your phone manually first.
Be careful that some of the stickies and or threads on rooting ect are old. Before you blindly follow instructions check the date and the version its meant for. If its more then a month or so old, or states a different version of android proceed with causion. Also, make sure you read the last maybe 4 or so pages of the threads if not more, as if the instructions ARE out of date you will see people note it there, and either suggest what changes are necessary or point to newer guides.
You really will help yourself out A LOT to learn the little bit it takes to do it manually. Multiple threads every day from people who have one little thing go wrong with the toolkits, that would be REALLY easy to fix if they knew what they were doing.
First read up on how to unlock, its really really easy... Once your unlocked STAY UNLOCKED, and make sure you keep "allow OEM unlock" on... Do those two things and you can almost definitely fix your phone no matter what you mess up.
Ok, so my old Nexus 6 fell 40' down a pipe chase while I was soldering some 4" copper water mains at work. Needless to say it was destroyed.
Got the replacement phone from insurance, went to plug it in to the computer to unlock and root it, but the computer won't recognize it, even though it had no problem recognizing the old phone. I checked, and device manager says unknown device with the little yellow triangle on it.
Android sdk tools are installed, as are the latest Google drivers.
I followed the instructions in the All-In-One thread for getting the computer to recognize the device, but it doesn't seem to be working.
Should I uninstall the sdk tools and the drivers, and redo them all?
Or does anyone else have any other suggestions?

the Nexus Root Toolkit can help you set up drivers, I'd give that a shot.
i was always told to not use toolkits...
i went ahead and deleted both the sdk and the google drivers, and reinstalled them, and everything is working now. unlocked and got twrp back, making a backup now, then on to root.
any idea if we can get regular root on mmb29v? i don't think i want systemless root... or do i? is there a link that i can read to learn the difference between the two and why one is better than the other?
People on this site recommend not using NRT for *rooting*, but NRT is more than just a rooting tool. It's a fantastically-well-programmed kit which helps with all parts of the process - as you've just discovered yourself (or did you not use NRT?). I've questioned (what I perceive to be) the kneejerk antagonism towards toolkits, but I think that the more experienced members recognise and admit that toolkits have their place once people take the time and trouble to understand what the toolkits are doing so that when they go wrong people don't plague the forums with questions that have been answered dozens of times already.
Yes, you certainly do want systemless root. It makes things like Google Pay (or whatever it's called - I wouldn't touch it myself) work, and it potentially makes OTA upgrades work. There is no benefit that I know of that would make system root better than systemless, though I'm just an uninformed end-user of other people's expertise...
(P.S. As an aside, unrelated to this query, can I ask generally that people don't respond including the entire original message unless the thread is so fantastically busy that the reply would make no sense? I wade through dozens of posts which repeat again and again the post I've just read directly above the reply. It's a waste of space, processing power and my time to have to look for the reply following the 50 lines of repeated comment above it. If you're responding to a specific point, copy and paste that particular point into your reply, not the entire 200 lines... You get me...?)
no, i didn't use nrt. i did the fastboot flash of the oem unlock and recovery.
as for the systemless root helping with ota, i had systemless root on my old nexus 6 and it wouldn't allow me to do ota's. i also don't use google pay.
it also seems easier to flash custom rom's when you have system root as opposed to systemless root, but maybe i am wrong?
Yes, I think that even Chainfire accepts that his systemless root won't work with OTAs unless you use the built-in unroot function before trying the upgrade. I mentioned it only because I was rooted with v2.68 and the N preview installed regardless, which surprised me. I dont think that the same happy event occurs with ordinary security OTAs.
I don't believe installing a custom ROM is affected in any way by the root method, since you lose it anyway.

i know for installing purenexus, there is a difference between system root and systemless root. nathanchance gives a description for updating purenexus with systemless root, but not for installing it fresh.

You don't need a custom recovery to install Magisk. I'm not gonna sit and watch some video about what you have and haven't done, so I'm not sure what how-to you've been following.

If you took a moment to read those you would have seen that you don't need a custom recovery to install Magisk (it can be useful, but you don't need one).

i saw that page and it makes no since to me. it still says i need a custom recovery also. i dont understand a single think. why cant they make it set-by-set?
let me make it as simple to understand what im looking for. i want to use my Sony Xperia Z3v to game assets dumps for Uta-Macross so i can have pull the 3D models and cards (very nice photos) from the game. to do this i need to have my sony phone rooted and i need to have Magisk so i can hide the root from Uta-Macross so i launch into the game to download the assests to do a dumb. everthing up to this point i have YET to understand what do at all. that link u give - https://topjohnwu.github.io/Magisk/install.html says to this then go here then go here and do this over and over again never saying just do this, this, and this, and your done.

The instructions by @topjohnwu are pretty complete... They do assume that you are somewhat familiar with things like fastboot, but that is information that can easily be found by searching the big ol' interwebz.
Using a custom recovery is one of the ways of installing Magisk. If this is the route you really want to go I suggest you take a look in your device's forum here on XDA:

That's usually a good first step since you'll likely find others discussing the same device specific topics.
But if you take a look again in the linked docs, you'll find that you can also use something called boot image patching (which doesn't require a custom recovery at all):

Rooting and tinkering with your device does require a certain level of knowledge about what you're doing. If you can't follow/understand the instructions available there's a good chance you might mess up your device. If you have your data backed up somewhere off the phone (which you should always have when playing with this stuff) you should be good since a complete and catastrophic failure is very unlikely. It's really annoying to have to set everything up from scratch though...

You'll need the boot image that corresponds to your currently installed firmware/ROM. If that is the firmware you have, then that should work.
You'll need to install the Manager again so that it can patch the image.
A small warning as you progress further: I've seen reports of old Sony devices having issues installing Magisk. Therefore it might be a good idea to visit the Z3 forums (linked in my previous post) and see if there's any information available on this before you continue. Doing proper research before committing always helps in the long run.

No. If you want to install Magisk you should not install any other root solution.
Install the Manager.
Patch the boot image.
Flash the patched boot image to your device.
Those are the basics...

ok now im lost again. to do date dumps for Uta-Macross i need a rooted phone so i can pull the files without windows again tard and saying "unknow error" when i go to copy the files from my phone. but to play this game i need to hide the root from Uta-Macross so i need to use Magisk. is Masgisk a root itself? im really lost again
Magisk provides a way to do systemless modifications to your device, it is a root solution in itself, and it has the ability to hide itself and it's components from most apps and services that look for a rooted or modded device.
This is kind of the basics, so I reallly suggest you do more research before continuing. The best source for information is the Magisk GitHub page:

Start there, take a look at the readme and the documentation available and continue searching for whatever other information you might need.

nothing i did worked. the .zip fail or the D6708_23.4.B.0.319_1288-1477_R30C.ftf file in the .zip witch in the rom from the phone, it will ALWAYS say failed, unsupported/unknow image format.
Morning. Like I posted previously, old (and new) Sony devices have been known to have issues installing Magisk. Search your device's forum for Magisk related posts and you'll likely find the info you need.

I am super new to rooting I mainly use it for PokemonGo. I am following this video on YouTube.
Basically when I flashed via Odin, I then install Magisk. Then everything is working and rooted BUT when I restart my phone my Magisk is then magically unrooted (I dont know if this is the right term) it says 'Magisk is not installed' and underneath that is says 'Magisk Manager is up to date'
So why does it keep doing this? Everytime this happens I need to Flash again via Odin and do the whole procedure again. This only happens when I restart the phone. Why does it keep doing this and how do I fix this? I will pay someone who can fix this for me. Ive been trying to figure out for the past day and Im going insane. I have no knowledge about rooting etc like i said i just want to play Pokemongo location spoofing.

You mean from the guide? Yes, as far as I understand that's the combo that you'd need on an s10 (I don't do Samsung). If you look at John's instructions he's covered that prety well.
Are you sure that you are doing the button combo properly? Because if you don't you'll just end up with Magisk not loading during boot and the system will seem to be unrooted.
But, as I wrote above I don't do Samsung so I'm not the best person to give advice about this... You might be better of asking for advice in your devices forum (because there you'll find people who knows the ins and outs):
