Hi.
The earpiece is behind the screen. In fact is a piezoelectric "speaker" that makes the whole screen vibrate.
Whe you put the phone in contact with your ear, you can hear everything clearly enough.
Quality-wise is not the best sounding earpiece I've ever had, but certainly not worst. So not bad solution at all.
My personal observation is the developer ROM has considerably diminished "speaker" quality over the Chinese stable. I found this from talking on the stable ROM, maybe an hour or so on multiple domestic calls (USA). I flashed the developer ROM (because, apparently I get board easily), but after a couple of calls, about 10% of that I had planed, my ears were absolutely drained from the experience and I was continually repeating myself because my caller had difficulty comprehending my words, even though they were of the everyday variety. Upon returning to the stale ROM, all was good with hearing and speaking, including several calls to the some of the same people I had conversations with on each iteration. (stable/developer/stable).
I don't have "permission" to root yet, so haven't tried the eu ROM.
This, just in case someone would like to know some of the hidden differences in the ROMs.

I got the bootloader unlock sms . I would like to ask if it expires after a certain amount of time if not used?
Does an unlocked bootloader means no OTA updates for untouched CN stable/dev ROM devices?

Yes, the unlock permission expires after a month. You can always revert back to stable MiUi whether your BL is locked or unlocked. You just gotta flash the global stable update.

Thanks for the reply! I have another one.
My unlocked device will be bound to my MIUI account somehow? If I choose to revert back to CN official stable, will my BL be locked again, and unrooted with OTA updates possible?
Thanks in advance.

Welcome always! Also, if you revert to global stable, your unlocked state will be maintained along with the granted root access. Because the bootloader and root access are core files or what you'd call as components of the phone's firmware. So, flashing MiUi won't affect the firmware files. To be honest, I've never tried it so you might be doing this at your own risk, but I had a Redmi 2 and I did exactly what I told you to do. It worked perfectly for me as the redmi 2 had an unlocked BL out of the box. But this whole 'Unlock the bootloader' thingy started from the Redmi Note 3. So just be careful while doing this.

Yes, I'll be very cautious , thus the questions. Any info on the OTA updates? I assume they won't be possible for a rooted device, after flashing the CN official stable, right?
Thanks again.

Yeah, right. I don't have any idea about the OTA updates but I recently looked on Mi forums and saw a thread claiming a stable nougat update that'll roll over soon through the OTA. Also, Mi5, Mi Max are on the way to development of Nougat updates.

I think this is not quite right, as I read the Unlock thread on the MIUI site, you can only unlock one device per month. I didn't see anything that leads me to believe the permission itself expires. As a matter of fact @underlines shared that he obtained unlock permission a few years ago for another Xiaomi phone and that he was able to unlock other phones without needing to request permission again.

I just got the phone, this is the first non Galaxy Note and non carrier locked phone I've purchased. I'm wondering a few things.
Will I get updates?
How do I check what Rom I'm on?
What are the differences between the Roms and which one should I be on in America?

Hi there!
I previously told you that OTA's won't tamper with the firmware files, but while I was browsing out on some Mi forums, it seems that the explanation I gave is wrong ( for the locked devices). The OTA's try to relock the bootloader and may hardbrick the device. So, please be careful while doing anything because the Mi Mix doesn't come at a small price and plus it is a limited edition concept device.

Is there any chance of getting Cyanogenmod, AOSP, or any other Android variant in the future? Or is there something that prevents this, and keeps it locked into MIUI?
Hello, I wan't to flash my phone. But I don't know how to determine for which market my device was. Can I flash eu rom for if I suddenly have china version, or it may bring to a bootloop?
Hi,
I'm thinking about buying a Redmi 4X, and it looks like it's a little cheaper to get the Chinese version. They're also more readily available. I'm planning to install Lineage OS or another custom ROM (whichever is 'best'). Has anyone here managed to unlock the bootloader on a Chinese device, while not understanding Chinese? Is there a guide with screenshots that I can follow? I will happily take the screenshots if you can help me through the steps. Unlocking seems quite simple, but I worry about navigating the menus without understanding what they say
-Walter
Imho you can switch the language to english.
Not when it has Chinese ROM, I thought?

You can definitely switch the language to English. Make sure to check if it supports the bands you need in your area though. I'm in the US and Global version is the only version that works here with 4g.

It appears that no English speaking developer has this phone. This is bad news, because even if you buy it and send it to your favorite developer, they will not be incentivized to do the work. The parent company, ZTE failed completely to market this phone as a global heavyweight that it is.
I still like the hardware and what Nubia is doing with the rom.

I still may buy one though. Thanks for the reply. Do you happen to know if there is a fix for the shoulder buttons YouTube issue? I think I read the CN stock Rom doesn't have that issue and can be installed on a NA version?

When I installed NA 1.16 for the first time, the problem was completely fixed. Then I rebooted the phone, and the problem came back. It looks like they tried to fix it. Maybe they will fix it in the next version of the rom.

You stand to benefit nothing, both of these variants receive updates quickly, so to risk changing over for potentially a small update (usually security) is in my opinion not worth it at all.
I have the UK/EU version of the phone and I wouldn't dream of changing region, I also had the 8 pro UK/EU was either first or joint first in receiving updates.
This shouldn't be any different.
I have the 2213 UK variant, i think A13 is not out for me yet? It is for india and it seems the A12 update in oxygen updater is dated newer than OTA A12 update

Ah, ok. Yes, I agree.
Was just wondering if there was any "technical" reason (e.g. firware/dviers) not to do so.
On the 8Pro I was just (too) eager to test the lastest version back then, and that was not my main driver.
Thanks for your answer.

No worries man. As far as I'm aware they're identical. Can't see Devs making different drivers so ones better performing over the other.
Wouldn't have thought so anyway, the problem is just the inherent risk that comes with changing region, just not worth the hassle for me.

Agree, there isn't any major outstanding bug on 2213 that's been fixed on 2215 as far as I know. And, also, I had issues going back to EU ROM on my 8pro. Wouldn't risk that on my main driver.
Hey after flashing Developer Preview one I got no network connection.
My device is a Chinese version with global Rom.
NE2215
I also tried flashing the Chinese version and the EU version and it didn't work either.
Any ideas?
All the settings in the connection options are greyed out. I cant set the APN manually. Everything is greyed out.
you probably lost your imei. sorry to say, but you likely have a very expensive brick on your hands.
Got similar problem on 1+. The imei is available but both sim cards do not find network. It occures not only on developer preview but on all ROMs

if you lost the imei, then no you can't fix it unless you previously made a back up. go into settings and checkk if it's still there or unavailable
My problem is only happening in developer Previews of android 13
After I reverted back to android 12, everything works again. Dunno what it is. I did a log the last time. Maybe that will help someone.
I can active the sim with entering the sim pin. The sim tries to activate, but it always aborts. So the sign for the not entered sim in status bar is disappears and comes back again. Same with the options in network settings. They randomly grey out and come back again.
I got a Chinese version flashed du NE2215. So I got NE2210 hardware with NE2215 Rom. Maybe this causes my problem. Cant either flash NE2210 or NE2215 developer preview. Both have the same problem.

The question is not why I do such "experiments". The question is, why it doesn't work.
If I would like to wait for final release, I would not be in this forum.
