Hello everyone. Can You please explain how to install GSI to SM-X205? I'm new to fastboot methods. I can't find proper TWRP for this particular model. I have achieved to unlock bootloader which took two steps (In old Android phone it was just easy with switch in developer options). I have installed TWRP from SM-X200 but it's not working. Restored everything by flashing Official Firmware. The main reason why I'm going to this is shortage of storage. I want to format external SD Card as Internal which is not allowed in new Andoirds. Thank you before hands and respect for ones who contribute their knowledge for community.
If TWRP is not available for your device, you can try using this to enable fastbootd. It won't have any TWRP specific features though.
As far as installing a GSI, you simply flash the system.img to /system. It's that simple. Make sure you wipe data.

SM-X205 installs the same as SM-X200 - I've followed all the instructions for any TWRP, root, GSI, etc and it all works as others X200's. I've not lost anything on the X205.
Piggybacking on this thread to drop some much needed general resources. I installed LineageOS on my s5e last year but struggled to find resources w/ GSI.
I appreciate all the hard work that the devs do, and typically documentation is not their strong suit, so in the future, maybe those of us who benefit from their work can create clearer documentation to spread around the burden a bit:
FAQ that covers topics like what is Treble, what is GSI, what is the naming conventions for GSI files: https://github.com/phhusson/treble_experimentations/wiki/Frequently-Asked-Questions-(FAQ)
Where as example of a GSI I can download : https://github.com/phhusson/treble_experimentations/releases/tag/v416
What should I know going in: Android 13 versions of GSI still have a few compatibility issues as per the first post in this thread. Android 12 is functioning 100% correctly.
Where can I see a more complete list of the GSI options available to me: https://github.com/phhusson/treble_experimentations/wiki/Generic-System-Image-(GSI)-list

I have followed all the instructions. But I'm stuck at stage where rebooting to fastboot from TWRP. Touchscreen stops to respond and I can't enable ADB.

You don't need to enable ADB. When the screen says "Entering fastboot mode" then you are connected. You can check this by entering "fastboot devices" from your PC.

Hey guys,
I recently purchased a Mi5 in China and had a hellish experience trying to get a working rooted international ROM on it even though I am definitely not a noob at android. I found out that most issues I had were result of small/stupid mistakes that can be easily avoided with the proper knowledge, so I decided to write a super quick how to on the process for anyone that might need it in the future. There are similar guides out there, and I will refer to some (all credit goes to original posters) but I found that most are incomplete/not updated/plain wrong. Please also note that this guide is updated to June 20th, newer ROM versions might require different steps.
This how to assumes you are familiar with the standard ROM flashing process, in case anyone needs a more detailed explaination of some of the steps, you can reply or search XDA elsewhere, most of the stuff has been mentioned here and there before.
1. Check that your hardware is ok (dial *#*#64663#*#* in dialer, you will enter hardware test mode, check every single item carefully)
2. Request a bootloader unlock from Xiaomi, unlock the bootloader: follow instructions here http://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-5/how-to/unlocking-xiaomi-mi-5-bootloader-t3336243
3. Now that Your bootloader is unlocked, you have 3 main options for working ROMs: Xiaomi's Global Stable, Xiaomi's Global Dev, Xiaomi.eu's unofficial Stable. If you want to play it safe, I suggest to go with the Xiaomi's Global Stable, otherwise choose Xiaomi.eu's unofficial Stable. I did not test extensively all three, so this is just a general recommendation.
4. In any case, you will need to use the official Xiaomi's flashing tool (Miflash) to do your first ROM flash. Just follow the process here: http://en.miui.com/a-234.html and you'll have flashed your new ROM. In case you want to flash Xiaomi.eu's unofficial Stable, follow the same process but get the flashable ROM here: https://xiaomi.eu/community/threads/xiaomi-eu-multilang-rom-for-xiaomi-mi5-unlocked-bl-only-released.31231/
5. Boot into your newly flashed ROM, check once again that hardware is ok (see step 1.). Please also see step 10b for a tidbit of additional info if You're in China.
6. Reboot into bootloader, boot (only boot, no need to install) TWRP, which you can find here as part of Xiaomi.eu's thread above in step 4. inside a zip packaged with a modded bootloader image. do NOT install the modded bootloader image. Also, this is the only version of TWRP that I found working for my device. There are a couple more versions from chinese developers (cofface, ganfan), but booting either resulted in blank screen.
7. Once you are in TWRP, the recovery will ask you for a decryption password, just press cancel, then "Swipe to allow modifications"
8. Sideload (you cannot install from internal storage since you will not be able to access it at the moment) the latest SuperSU stable, which you can find here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1538053. Please note that you WILL need the latest version, anything earlier might just get you a bootloop. And please do NOT format /Data to make it accessible to TWRP as that will also likely result in bootloop. Just sideload whatever you need.
9. Do NOT wipe Dalvik or Cache, reboot into System.
10. Congrats, You're done. Have a beer/coffee/tea and pat yourself on the back.
10b. In case You're in China, and this is Your first Android 5.0+ ROM, you will happen into a "bug" (it's not really a bug, but a result of China's Great Firewall), where whenever you connect to a Wifi, the phone will think you have no internet access and that will cause a whole host of issues (won't reconnect automatically, will try to default to 4G etc.). If so, just enable ADB Debugging and type adb shell "settings put global captive_portal_server httpstat.us/204" . That will mostly solve it (you might still get some weird result with some APs, but toggling Wifi should solve the problem for that AP forever.

After it says booting, does the screen light up? If so please check wether "adb devices" and "fastboot devices" return anything. If adb returns "recovery" or if both return empty, you're likely bumping into my same issue where the recovery won't boot (to me this happened regardless of whether I flashed or booted it). Are you using the specific recovery version from my point 6?

no, nothing happens on the screen, it stays in fb mode without any reaction. adb and fb devices doesn't return any device connected.. if i do an fb reboot it told me "waiting for any device" so the only option to get it run again is to power off.. yes of course, it's the recovery.img with the modified boot.img..

i want only to inform you, i get it to work.. the problem was my rom, miui 8.. for miui 8 you will need a new version of twrp, which you can download here: https://yadi.sk/d/oj6Z-0u7sXdw6 after that, i was able to boot to the twrp recovery without flashing it, so i keept everything original like it was and was able to sideload the supersu and get root without to format my data.. when you start the recovery it came in chinese, but when you click on the right button you can choose your language.. that's it.. thank you for you support dude!!
Is it only way to switch from chinese ROM to official global ROM to have unlocked bootloader? If it is, is there any other way of unlocking it, waiting 15 days to get permission seems ridiculous.
Lovely step by step guide. But, any idea if it will wipe the user data and/or internal sdcard when moving from the chinese to international version?
Hi,
I'm working with a Huawei Honour 4x, Android 6.0, Stock Rom, Model: CHE-TL00, EMUI 4.1
I'm looking to root it but could not find anything specific on google or XDA. I've read about systemless root for Android 6.0 but the material largely concerns the nexus phones.
I've got quite an odd brand with a specific model make which differs from other models of the Honour 4x.
Simply put, i'd like to root the device. Can anyone point me towards more information to achieve this ?
I've searched and failed. I'm hoping someone else may know where to look.
#Update: I have twrp installed.
#Update 2: I used TWRP to flash SuperSU. My phone failed to boot afterwards and kept looping. So i recovered using the Nandroid backup.
Back to square one. Any help would really appreciated.
#Update 3: Problem Solved. For anyone who has the same device, here are the steps to take.
1. Flash TWRP using Minimal ADB Flash and Boot
2. Use TWRP to flash the updated version of SuperSU (2.71 Beta). (HAS TO BE THIS VERSION or the latest version!!!)
Used: [BETA-SuperSU-v2.74-2-20160519174328-forced-systemless] or [BETA-SuperSU-v2.71-20160331103524]
3. Reboot; wait for a few minutes for phone to load.
4. Job done. Your phone should be rooted.

I can get my device to reboot into fastboot but it doesn't recognise the device after that?
(Just says "Waiting for device", and nothing shows up if I type 'Fastboot Devices')
Could you tell me what drivers you used? I really want to root it to try and get some space back
follow the steps anyway, dont worry if it say conecting in hisuite, and be sure u have hisuite installed, i.e, u have an hisuite.exe in the folder C:\Program Files (x86)\HiSuite\ .... and for the space, in hi suite desktop app u can uninstall some, goodluck!

I had the same issue. There're a lot of bloatware apps pre-installed which take up crucial internal space. It seems like it is a driver issue.
My process of achieving root was essentially trial and error, so there was a lot of google searching and installing; without making note of everything i installed (when concerning drivers).
So i won't pretend to be an expert but I'll list the most useful places i checked out.
Firstly, i download the basic Android command line tools from the SDK webpage.
Secondly, i followed the steps on the TWRP webpage (can't link as i'm a new user) I download their recommended drivers too.
Thirdly, (Since Huawei do support modification to an extent, you can find a set of their recommended drivers on google or on their webpage). I googled a set of USB drivers for the Honor 4x and downloaded these too.
Following this, I was able to connect my device successfully.
(Failing this, Google has a lot of content on connecting the Honour to Minimal ADB Flash and Boot. Check it out.) :good:

Hi, my model is Ch2-L11 and I'm very noob and very likely to mess up the whole phone, so I was wondering How did you created a nandroid backup?
I installed the minimal adb tool that you suggested in your post. should I use "adb backup all" in cmd? or creating a nandroid backup is different?
Why not sharing where you sourced the TWRP you used is a mystery and makes this correctly referenced thread rather worthless.
thanks for share..
Since no guide has been updated with information on official TWRP for root and backup reasons, I thought I'd create one.
DISCLAIMER:
To do this method requires you to unlock your bootloader. Your warranty is now void. This method assumes you have basic knowledge of ADB and Fastboot commands and know how to recover your device if you accidentally type a wrong command and now boot to TWRP and can't boot to system. If you cannot recover from this, Read up on guides to "return to stock" and familiarize yourself on how to recover your device should something go wrong.
There are two methods for root. You can flash TWRP to your boot image to be able to reboot to TWRP without a PC, or just a temp boot so you can just have root and not TWRP. I'll put in brackets the minor differences.
1: Get ready
Download latest build of TWRP img file from their website.(Previous link is to their instructions and device specific patches, download page is HERE.) {download the latest zip if you want to flash TWRP}
Download what you want on your phone (SU, Magisk, etc)
2:
Hook phone up to your PC, be sure you have latest adb/fastboot drivers. (I do not support windows related questions. If you have latest drivers, you'll have no issue with the below commands, Linux just works for this kind of thing)
3:
Navigate to your directory that has that img downloaded. (windows, shift right click and say "open command prompt here")
Type the below commands, and terminal output should be similar: (I.E. this is a copy/paste of terminal)
Main thing to remember is "Fastboot boot {filename}.img"
Code:
[email protected]:~$ adb reboot bootloader
[email protected]:~$ cd Downloads
[email protected]:~/Downloads$ fastboot boot twrp-3.2.1-1-nash.img
downloading 'boot.img'...
OKAY [ 0.841s]
booting...
OKAY [ 5.135s]
finished. total time: 5.976s
[email protected]:~/Downloads$
BE SURE TO DO BOOT AND NOT FLASH!!! (If you ask why you can no longer boot to system, I'll let you know you missed this line.)
5:
You're now in TWRP!
It will ask you for your password. This is your PIN or password to unlock your phone. Enter it.
TWRP has now decrypted your storage to read the zip file(s) you put on your phone!
Go to install and navigate to your directory where you put that file
Install Magisk/SU/TWRP/whatever you please.
(Note: some root zips require a factory reset)
6:
Reboot!
You're Done congratulations!
Attached are images if they help you see you're doing the right thing.
Special thanks @erfanoabdi @invisiblek @npjohnson @joemossjr @jbats
Without the above people a lot of what's above woudn't have been possible for this device specifically. Also, thanks to everyone who pitched in to get a device over to invisiblek. Leaps and bounds have been done since that donation. And thanks to the other devs who have invested in this phone and their time to help out.
(Quoted from Nathan Chance)
Quite a few people have asked to donate to me in the past and I have turned them down. I am not in this for the money, this is my hobby, something I truly enjoy. If you truly want to donate to something (it is not expected in the slightest), I recommend an entity like the Open Source Initiative, the Free Software Foundation, XDA, or any one of the people I have thanked in the OP. Additionally, you are free to copy any and all of my work; the only thing I request is that you not ask for donations as well (though I can't really enforce this lol). Thank you.
Random issues post:
SU does some wonky edits to the ramdisk. It is highly suggested to flash Magisk for root.
Some have reported needing to wipe data after flashing Magisk. If you can't boot after flashing Magisk, just go back into recovery (can be twrp or stock) and wipe data/factory reset to boot again.
Note: we do not have a recovery partition. Never flash the img file! Download the flashable zip if you want twrp on your phone and flash per OP instructions.
Awesome thanks
I get into a bootloop and right back into TWRP using this method. I got the failed to mount data invalid argument. I got rid of this by formating data in TWRP. Now I get failed to mount system device or resource busy when I attempt to flash Magisk.
Bootloop.

I apologize in advance for asking a question that may have an obvious answer, but will this work for the Verizon variant of the Z2 Force? I'm not interested in trying out different ROMs just yet, but I would like to be able to remove adds, bloatware, and go back to using FoxFi the way it was meant to be used, specifically as a wireless hotspot. I can use the hotspot feature built into the phone, but it caps at 15 gigs & gets reduced to low, low speed after. Thanks in advance. Oh, and I should mention I'm currently running Oreo.

This guide assumes you can unlock your bootloader. Since Verizon and AT&T feel they have a right to lock down their devices, this guide won't work. That is why I voted with my wallet and left Vz after my M7 due to them putting phone OEM's privates in a vice and forced them to lock out those carrier variants.

I was on 27.1 when I attempted to root and got into a bootloop and lost my baseband when I flashall back to stock OCX27. I have a feeling 27.1 update isn't compatible with this method and cannot be downgraded to even OCX 27 Oreo
so no go on 27.1 twrp? I have root on 27.1 TMO obtained post update. Obtained by fastbooting the nash twrp and running magisk 16.zip. No needing to format data or anything
I was just wondering about the installable twrp zip. I am coming from samsung development so all this A/B partitioning and some of the other partitions are new to me.
As soon as I can get twrp on the phone and feel comfortable recovering. The kernels and roms will start coming.

I'll put a warning about SU then. It also causes other stuff to not flash right. Suggested root is magisk for our device. Reflash your boot.img from the flash all and reroot with magisk then wipe data (wiping might not be needed, I never had to but some people have needed to).

I'm thinking of getting a 30 Ultra the next week, as I'm very disappointed with my OnePlus 10 Pro and the way OnePlus is heading.
I've been an OnePlus user since the 6 and never had a Motorola before, but the 30 Ultra really fascinates me.
Before I buy it I only wanted to ask how the modding community for motorola is.
Is Magisk easily installable with Motorola devices? Anything I should keep in mind with unlocking the bootloader / rooting of a motorola?
Thank's in advance
I didn't have any problems rooting my edge 30 ultra. I had to wait about 2-3 days for the OEM unlocking option to be activated in the developer options, but other than that it was smooth sailing.
Unlock bootloader, obtain stock boot image by for example using the Lenovo Rescue and Smart Assistant, patch the boot image in the magisk app, and then flash it.
You should keep in mind that it's extremely dangerous if not impossible to relock the bootloader again. In theory you have to flash the stock firmware and thoroughly delete all data and custom settings but a lot of people end up with bricked devices.

Ok so once I root my Motorola, I can't go back to unrooted, right? Surely not ideal but I rarely unroot my devices once I rooted. But thanks for mentioning!
I'm guessing custom rom/kernel support for this device isn't really a thing right?
No, you can unroot at any time if you uninstall magisk and flash the stock boot.img. But you can't / shouldn't relock the bootloader. I think times are over when a lot of people developed kernels / Roms / TWRP for specific phones. We need more people to take matters into their own hands, the market is flooded with too many different models.
@Killuminati91 any news on twrp for this phone yet?

Custom roms / kernels isn't a thing at the moment. It is confirmed however that Motorola will soon release the kernel source code of the Edge 30 Ultra, which can help with custom rom and kernel development (https://github.com/MotorolaMobilityLLC/kernel-msm/issues/445).

2. Reboot the phone to the bootloader, for example using adb reboot bootloader
3. Follow the steps from here: https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/standalone/bootloader/unlock-your-device-a
To root your phone:
1. Install the Magisk app from here: https://github.com/topjohnwu/Magisk/releases
2. Download the boot image from the official firmware, make sure the firmware corresponds with your device (or grab your own using the Lenovo Rescue and Assist tool) https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...cn-to-edge-30-ultra-eu.4491699/#post-87424851
3. In Magisk: Home -> Install -> Select and Patch a File ->Select the boot.img -> Click LET'S GO
4. Copy the patched boot image from /storage/emulated/0/Downloaded/magisk_patched-xxxx.img to your computer
5. Boot the phone to the bootloader
6. Flash the patched boot image with fastboot flash boot magisk_patched-xxxx.img, or alternatively, if you want to be sure that the boot image boots before flashing it, use fastboot boot magisk_patched-xxxx.img and if it works fine, repeat from step 5.
7. Reboot

No success yet and I currently don't have the time to try, sadly. Device tree can be generated with helpers but the whole Linux compiling part is still gibberish to me.

I did a tentative build, here are the results: img / zip
This was built with OrangeFox, using my device tree. Feel free to contribute to the repo, I can rebuilt if it doesn't work out of the box.
A disclaimer: I am a noob, and I don't have the device yet to test it, it is quite unlikely that this recovery works on the first attempt.
The prebuilt kernel I am especially unsure about.

I also tried myself to setup a device tree, but haven't been able to extract the prebuilt kernel. That's also why I asked for the kernel source on their github that will hopefully soon be published.
I'll try in a bit and edit this post to see if the recovery boots.
EDIT: Nope, it doesn't boot. After the usual motorola animation the screen goes black, and afterwards boots into system.

sorry for an off-topic question: What did you hate about Oneplus 10 Pro in particular?

I just don't like the way OnePlus is heading, like many users with the 10 Pro. It feels like using an Oppo device honestly and they made it impossible to unbrick your device by encrypting the popular MSM Tool.
After 5 years with OnePlus it's time for me to try something different

Yes it didn't work for me either
Nope !! , stay where you are, I had One Plus 9 Pro before, the Edge 30 Pro is much better in all aspects, One plus = Oppo, very bad phone.
A few questions;
Do you need to have a sim card installed in the phone during the 7 day wait period until the oem unlock button is available? Can I just connect the phone to wifi and let it sit for a week?,
Do you need some sort of unlock code from Motorola? I read the unlock directions, but to go any further it's asking for an email address and the need to register and account.,
Also what is the main difference between the pro and the ultra? Is it only the 200MP camera?

It works for me, thanks~
And is there any way to remount /system or /vendor directory with r/w permission?

I'm wanting a custom rom on my snapdragon galaxy s20fe, but none of the gsis I tried to flash would even boot, anyone got any ideas?
Really? Try this:
-Install your working version of TWRP
-Format data (before that you have to backup your important data)
-Then use the TWRP's fastboot going to "Reboot" > "Fastboot"
-Connect your phone via USB
-To flash the GSI you want use the command "fastboot flash system THE_GSI.img">>At this point make sure you extracted the img (or not) you downloaded.
-Reboot
The GSIs brings a few tweks that make Samsung phones works well, just take a look at them in the Config menu called "phh's tools" or something like that. Good luck!
I gorgot that you will need a working and updated SDK package to run fastboot.exe to in you Windows PC, put the GSI image in that folder to. And if you have troubles with the ADB driver, go to Windows Manager, and try to change the ADB driver manually from the not working one to a "Samsung ADB interface" that will show on the list.
I have not attempted the fastboot method, I did successfully install twrp and tried flashing it via twrp but the gsi would not boot, will flashing the gsi via fastboot make a difference?
Sure, thats the way I did it and it works pretty well
I've successfully flashed alot of gsis, I'm happy with evolution
Yea, Evolution X is the best for me too!

https://t.me/s20femodding/1 we have a detailed guide for getting GSIs working and we have a couple of the tweaks needed for GSIs on Samsungs pinned.
it could be the version that was flashed or maybe if you went from being rooted with an older version of magisk, that's caused FE users hundreds of bootloops.

So much customisation, took me a while to tweak the settings, but managed to get literally every function working

I successfully got it working now with evolution x but I bricked it in just about every way before I got it right, the gsis weren't working, I did my research and realized I wasn't flashing a file I should have been through Odin to disable something, so this is resolved, my current problem is twrp on my tablet, touch screen will not respond and I do not have a USB c mouse
