Hi everyone:
I'm an ex IT tech. but don't know that much about smartphone tech. I say that because I'll follow along quickly if people can use metaphors that relate back to PCs. I've used Linux a bit but am not a Linux expert.
I have a Droid 4 with Jelly Bean on it. I'd like to upgrade it to whatever is the most stable later custom version of Android. Do people recommend CyanogenMod 12? Some LineageOS version? Stability and having everything work as much as possible is what's most important to me. Speed would be a bonus, but it not as important as stability/functionality.
I've done the following to prepare for this:
-Taken a screenshot and put it on my PC to keep track of which version of Android I have.
-Downloaded SafeStrap 3.75, but don't know if I have the right version for this phone. Somewhere I saw something about
a special version for the Droid 4.
-I'm not sure which gapps version to download. Will later versions have more apps but be more likely to
have compatibility issues with an older version of Android?
-I know how to get into developer mode
-I know how to get into Fastboot mode
Any help would be appreciated.

see the index for correct safestrap version, 3.75 is latest, but you need the Droid 4 one

I haven't used the Droid 4 much since cm11, it's likely still a good option

Thanks, however I was looking for something a little more newibe-friendly. There are literally dozens and dozens of pages to read. On top of that, the link to the SafeStrap is dead, and there are circular links, all of which appear to go that dead link. As well, the page to download the patch to enable the GSM on CDMA Global phones also has dead links.
Nothing simpler?

The link for safe strap is not dead there are two versions. One from stargo and the other is a modified safe strap for unused partitions redone by some one else. You need to look in the correct posts and thread. Here is the download: http://www.internauta37.altervista....afestrap-maserati-v3.75-unused-partitions.apk
As far as for gsm keep looking you'll probully find something. I can't help you with that because I never needed to use but it shouldn't be to hard to do or figure out.
As far as wich rom you want to use just try a few different ones and see wich one you prefer to use as a daily driver.

Hi Shplad,
It all seems a bit overwhelming at first, but there isn't that much to it really. So, if you've got some IT experience, I'm sure you'll be fine. I always use the latest version (out of curiosity), but from what I've read, CM11 is considered pretty stable, but 12 and 13 are good too. And you'll probably find you don't need the GSM patch as it'll just work automatically - I think it was required in CM12 at one point, but that might be fixed now.
You haven't mentioned rooting. If you haven't already done that, you may as well get that done first, and it's covered in the pages that sd_shadow linked to. And I had a quick look at the links to safestrap in the pages that sd_shadow linked to, and they all seemed ok to me (as OGdroidster has just said also). You just need to make sure you've got the one with 'maserati' in the filename.
So, (from memory - could be wrong), you just need to:
- root the phone
- download your chosen rom and gapps
- install safestrap
- in safestrap install file system then boot into recovery mode
- create yourself a slot in the boot options
- make sure your new slot is the active one (it tells you at the top)
- install your chosen rom and gapps in the install section
- reboot
And if you get stuck, you could just ask, and I'm sure someone will answer pretty quickly.
Good luck
So, which versions of Android are CM11 and CM12? Can anyone else chime in and let me know if CM12 is better or more stable than CM11?
It turns out I could not download the Safestrap because my firewall was blocking some advertising/metric site which was required to go that page. Got it now.
Not sure what the GSM code you refer to is for. Will the upgraded phone with CMxx not work by default on GSM networks, or is something different?
Thanks

CM11 is KitKat (4.4), CM12 is Lollipop (5), CM13 is Marshmallow (6) and CM14 is Nougat (7).
I was referring to the GSM patch (that you queried above). What I was saying, was that in most versions of CM, GSM automatically works, so you won't need to apply the patch. But if you did have a problem, the links seem to work fine to me.
If I was you, I'd try out a few versions and find which version you prefer, as I don't think anyone will be able to tell you which is 'best'. I would have thought you'd be fine with 11, 12 or 13 though, and because you can have multiple roms installed with safestrap, you could install all 3 if you wanted!
Thanks. I guess I wasn't aware that you could use any CM. I thought only 11 or 12 could work properly on a Droid 4. So, any of those ROMs might work?
Also, at what stage do you install the GSM patch if it is necessary?

As far as I understand it (which could be totally wrong), 11 and 12 are no longer being developed and will only receive security updates, so from that point of view, I guess they will be more stable. But 13 and 14 will work, but there may be the odd issue here and there (particularly with 14 which is still quite new). You'd have to have a quick scan through the comments to see if there's anything that's like to be a problem for you.
With reagrds to GSM, I should just try it and see if it works to begin with. If it doesn't, then download the patch, reboot, go into safestrap, install the zip then reboot.
Hi,
If you are going to use a ROM with ART (Lollipop CM12x and above) Do not use CM12. It is old, outdated, and laggy. CM13 (LineageOS 13) provides a superior experience. Once LOS 14.1 becomes official for our devices, I would highly recommend upgrading to it, as it provides superior memory management.

Wow, this is a lot to take in. Thanks. So, I don't quite understand the repercussions. Once I root, does that mean any ROM OS that boots is somewhat more vulnerable, cause it's like being logged on as root in Linux, or does it depend which ROM I'm using or something else?

Okay, I figured out after my last post that root status depends on which ROM you are running, and of course installing a ROM without root status would put you back to unrooted status.
I downloaded Lineage OS 13 and verified the MD5SUM. I rooted the phone using Shadow's video.
Now I want to make an image of my NAND or have some other method of restoring the stock ROM before I install a new ROM. At what stage in the process do I do that and what is the safest tool / method to do that? RSDLite? Adding another ROM slot and using Nandroid backup?
Awaiting anxiously...
Alright, I learned from Googling that RSDLite can restore a ROM to the phone directly from your PC.
Does that wipe out any upgraded, more modern ROMS that I put on the phone, such as Lineage OS 13? Is it like having multiple partitions or hard drives on a PC?
How safe is the RSDLite procedure? Can someone explain the pros/cons of doing it that way versus (as I understand it) having 2 ROMs on the NAND available? I see a lot of HOWTOs, but very few explanations/diagrams/theory. If I could relate this back to PCs, I'd be able to understand better.

As far as I understand it, and again, this could be wrong, using RSDLite is usually a last resort in the unlikely event that you've completely messed up your phone. You will lose everything, and your phone will back to how it was when you bought it. I've never needed to use RSDLite myself, but from what I've read, it's a pretty reliable way to get your phone working again. As long as you follow all the instructions, and install CM (LOS) 13 into another slot, it's very unlikely that you'll damage your original stock rom and you'll still be able to boot into if ever you need to. Hopefully, someone who knows more about it will comment also...
I got Safestrap 3.75 special version for unused partitions installed. I didn't realize it allows you to make TWRP ROM backups.
I made a backup of the stock ROM. The first time I did that, I got an error stating it couldn't find or access /boot.
Strangely, the second time I tried, it seemed to work fine.
I copied the folder with the stock ROM backup to my PC, just in case. I managed to flash with Lineage OS 13. It booted fine, but I forgot to select the Gapps zip as well. It does not appear to be rooted after bootup.
1. Do I need to reinstall Lineage 13 or is there way to install the apps without reinstalling Lineage?
2. What is the normal state of this ROM? I'm not sure if I have to root Lineage 13. If I don't enable root, will I be unable to run TWRP recovery and add the Gapps zip file and reinstall? I don't want to be stuck with a successful Lineage install and no apps. I'd find another way to install the apps, but I'm guessing you can't without the apps themselves, no?
Help!
Okay, I figured out how to install just gapps 5.1-2015-05-23-24 . However, during configuration, I cannot get the phone to connect to gmail via WiFi (I don't have a data plan).
"Validating Server Settings...
Couldn't open connection to server."
I see other people had this in other version of Android. Is this a particular problem in Lineage 13? Any solutions known?
...AAAANDDD Google Play Services has closed.
Hmm...this does not seem very stable at all. Has anyone actually tried Lineage 13 on this phone or was it just a guess that it might work?
EDIT:
I tried these suggestions, just in case.
https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/gmail/ACSvDiQoufI
Now, I'm getting the error:
"Problem with account setup
Username or password is incorrect"
Google Play Services keeps closing. Should I uninstall the gapps and install a more compatible one? I think network connectivity is not stable.

Hi. I don't use gapps, and I'm uisng LOS 14 myself. But there's 57 pages of comments for LOS 13, so I think it's fair to say people have tried it! Now you've got it installed, you could post in the LOS 13 thread, and ask people which version of gapps they are using.
P.S. The first post in the Droid 4 LOS 13 thread appears to suggest using OpenGApps and has some details on how to install, or you could read through that thread for other tips.

I meant on this website. In the 'Droid 4 Android Development' section (https://forum.xda-developers.com/droid-4/development), there a thread for each of the roms. The one for CM (LOS) 13 is https://forum.xda-developers.com/droid-4/development/cm13-0-marshmallow-unofficial-builds-t3270938

Thanks for that. I didn't post there earlier because I thought it was only for developer reports of bugs, and my coding skills are exactly zero. Should I wait to see what happens in that other thread and not post back here until I hear something from there?
Aosip for Motorola Z2 Force
What is this?
AOSiP is a quality custom ROM based purely on GOOGLE AOSP source since 6.0 release. Twisted with the latest features and blended with stability. We strive for perfection and it shows.
Obligatory Warning: This guide and ROM assumes you know the fundamentals of fastboot, flashing TWRP, and running a flash all. Your warranty is voided because of the unlocked bootloader. This is a Third Party ROM. Things may not work as expected compared to stock (for better or for worse).
Warning 2: If you can't do fastboot commands, do a flash all, root your device or flash TWRP/ROM, please do not ask for help here. If you cannot flash all back to stock, please stay stock for everyone's sake.
Warning 3: if you don't flash the firmware so you are on Oreo on both slots, when you boot after flashing, you'll be on Nougat firmware and have a brick. Try a flash all as that's your only hope on recovering your phone.
How to install
1. Download the latest ROM from here.
2. Prepare your phone for AOSP style ROMs. (download one of the firmwares depending on your model)
Flash the firmware with the .bat file. (See links below or on Post #2)
3. Boot to TWRP
4. Flash TWRP to boot image (with the zip from their website.) Reboot to Newly flashed recovery.
5. Erase oem, data, and system
6. Flash rom like you would any aosp rom, in twrp.
7. Reboot to bootloader
8. run the command "fastboot -w" (this will erase EVERYTHING from your phone, even internal SD, but is needed to have these ROMs work)
9. reboot.
Whats working?
Wifi
RIL
Mobile data
GPS
Camera
Flashlight
Camcorder
Bluetooth
Volte (T-Mobile)
Change quick charge
Fingerprint reader
NFC
Lights
Sound / vibration
Some motomods (soundboost mod doesnt work)
Team Illusion:
Josh Fox (xlxfoxxlx)
Akhil Narang
Sri Harsha (@srisurya95)
Shreesha Murthy
Brett Montague
Known issues
1. WiFi Calling hit and miss
2. Cannot flash Gapps (included temporarily)
3. some Audio recording apps will not have audio recording work (phone functions fine)
4. if you don't fastboot -w, you will not boot.
5. if you don't flash the firmware your bootloader might relock itself and be stuck on Nougat.
6. SElinux is passive (meaning CTS check will always fail until further notice.)

Bug reports:
If you don't flash the firmware and your other slot is nougat, after flashing the ROM, you'll brick. (Custom ROM with a locked nougat slot.) Your only hope is attempting an official flash all and try again after flashing the firmware zip in the posts above.
Fair warning and off-topic: I am okay with some off topic questions. If you have a question, please use the search function. If I have addressed the question before, I will not answer and advise to find it in the thread. I will report the post for a mod to delete along with my response to keep the thread tidy. It seems some users think this ROM has international support. It doesn't and won't unless someone with another variant or an unlocked T-Mobile/Sprint model tests, confirms and debugs for that international carrier. Please keep in mind of what I said below regarding this. I posted this on page 20 or so and copying here for better visibility.
Your SIM is locked. You are trying to run a phone off it's intended network. Please don't post those problems here. It isn't ROM related. Like the thread states. It works for T-Mobile and Sprint only on their respective models on their locked networks. Any other tom foolery isn't supported and must be kept out of the thread. After this it will be considered off topic.
Edit: if you have Sprint or T-Mobile service and run into issues with using your (albeit, expensive) international roaming plan, I will assist with that if it works on stock but not AOSP. If you don't have a sprint or T-Mobile sim, I cannot help. Almost all devs on this device won't be able to help. "Almost" all of us are on US carriers.

Motomods work with kernel in ROM (hot swapping should as well iirc, I don't use the mods that often where my projector is outdated) LTE doesn't work on Sprint, but 3G and 1xTT works fine.
@Uzephi if we were to flash your kernel, we would lose motomods support?

For now, yes. Still trying to get it work. Clang is being a PITA on my build box, having to go to Linaro which can't build the Motorola Greybus driver correctly.
Thanks sir, I appreciate what you've done for the community, finally can go back to my moto from a GS8+
I'm sorry if this is a dumb question but...
Ive never had to install different firmware before on a ROM. If I install this, will it change the process of installing a different ROM in the future?
Thank you.
Sprint varient if it matters by the way.
Edit: I'm sorry for this but is there a way to do this without the .bat file? currently working on OSX

Open the bat file in a text editor and run each of those commands one by one.
This I'd a dual boot device. Your other slot has the older Nougat bootloader. That firmware flashed the current Oreo firmware to both slots. If you don't do that, and you flash one of these ROMs, you'll reboot to your nougat slot, locked and pretty much screwed without a flash all and luck of being able to flash OEM images in oem mode.
Edit: you won't need to flash this any consecutive times until there is another big firmware update like nougat to Oreo was.

Thank you for the quick reply. I've installed the firmware, but now when I boot to TWRP and try to install the ROM, it instantly fails with ERROR:1. Tried redownloading with a different browser but got the same result. I feel like I'm missing something obvious.

Flash twrp zip to your phone, reboot to your phone's newly flashed twrp recovery and flash the rom. If I remember right, you need to wipe oem and system before flashing the ROM as well. I'll add that shortly.
Up and running! Thank you!! Still looking around but I do see a built in updater. Will this function 100%? By that I mean, when the Sprint LTE issue is resolved and whatever else is coming will be handled by the updater?
Thanks again very excited to play around.

Working fine for me thru Evie Launcher. Soundboost mod is broken though. My SoundBoost is recognized and the notification says the mod is attached, but the volume steps are reduced to on/off and no sound comes out.
Edited to reflect that only the sound boost mod isn't working AFAIK.

Oh, @npjohnson and @invisiblek don't have the sound mod, so they can't get it to work. All of us in the development discord are trying to mail one out, they can't guarantee when it would get fixed.
Edit: added disclaimer to OP. We can only guarantee what we have works. Like when I do my kernel, the only mod I have is the free projector, so that's the only mod I can guarantee works when I do get it working.
I have an extra soundboost I could mail to someone.
I read this article, but I still don't understand completly how is anti-rollback gonna affect my phone.
Is it only MIUI thing or even with custom ROMs I won't be able to flash earlier version? Let's say I already have newest version of MIUI based on Android 9 so anti-rollback is present. Can I install, let's say LineageOS 15 which is Android 8.1? And can I switch between let's say LOS 15 and LOS 16 as much as I want? And... what if one day Android 9.1 is released and custom ROM is made, if I install it, does it mean I can't flash even the most recent version of MIUI until it would be based on 9.1 either? Cause it would detect that I had newer version and wouldn't let me flash it, right?
So the question is, I guess, does only MIUI check anti-rollback index before flashing or MIUI just activates this "feature" in my phone and then it's embeded somewhere deep and I'll never be able to go back again even with custom ROM? My thinking is... if MIUI version XY brings support for ARB it means, that earlier version, let's say XY - 1 doesn't have that support and therefore it can't check and know that it's earlier version, right? So that check has to be burnt into phone for good and it is gonna permanently affect my phone even without MIUI, possibly restrict flashing even for custom ROMs.
But I'm no expert, so I would like to know from someone who understands it.
Thanks!

Thanks!

Typically, there is no need to worry when flashing custom roms even when based on a stock MIUI rom. Also, this is an on-device problem, not something server side. Lastly, once custom recovery is in place, even if the phone were to fail to boot because of anti-rollback, I wouldn't see it being an issue since a custom recovery is in place and it should be easily recoverable.
I got my device yesterday and today i have been trying to flash legion os 2.11 but i always keep getting error 7 even tried by installing global rom through mi flash tool but still got error 7 from twrp and oxfox both.
Can someone just guide me clearly on flashing roms on this k20 pro.
Currently i using global miui 11 11.0.4.0 rom but want to try other custom roms as well..

I've got a bit more time to reply now.
OFox is really designed to be used with MIUI. The majority of it's extra features are specific to running MIUI. I would only recommend it if you decide to stick with MIUI in the long run.
The TWRP I pointed to is from the dev who maintains the official TWRP for our device. The unofficial version you've installed is identical to the official version, but with the TWRP app removed. If you intend to stick with custom ROMs, I recommend you stick with TWRP from mauronofrio.
If you prefer to have your phone encrypted, then there was no need to flash fcrypt/DFE. There are a small number of users that continue to insist that we need to disable encryption, but it is not needed.
Having the phone unencrypted does make life a little easier when flashing, but if you prefer the security and want to know about living with an encrypted phone, reply back and I'll give you more details.

I tried Legion Os which is Aosp based and it installed fine but then i tried Masik X 16 which again said this isn't for your device so had to make changes in updater script then it flashed fine.
Also i would like to know about decryption of storage and would it cause any issues in flashing roms again nd again..

If you want to be permanently decrypted, then you will not have any problems flashing ROMs. However, whenever you need to update the vendor and firmware, you will also need to flash the DFE script again.
If you want to be encrypted, then the best thing to do, every time you flash, is to temporarily remove encryption by removing all lockscreen security just before flashing, then once you've finished, restore encryption by adding back lockscreen security. However, if you restore MIUI, then choose to go to another custom ROM, you will need to format the data partition when flashing over MIUI, even if you've removed lockscreen security first.

Ok that means going from miui to aosp & vice versa - format data needed.
So this should similarly apply to all Miui based roms like xiaomi.eu or masik x or it is just for stock miui.

As far as I know, you only need to format data when flashing over official MIUI. I don't know the details, but it is my understanding that encryption on MIUI does not follow standard practice, which is why it it's necessary to format data when flashing over MIUI. I don't believe this issue exists with MIUI based custom ROMs, or when reverting back to MIUI.
Though, there may be occasions, when flashing from one AOSP ROM to another, and the phone is encrypted, when you may get a bootloop. In this case booting to TWRP and formatting data, will fix the problem. This is why I earlier recommended temporarily removing lockscreen security, if you choose to have an encrypted phone, even though this is a rare occurrence.

Thanks for the info.
I tried custom miui rom and well flashing dfe worked fine so i think its just for official miui.
I am using K20 Pro in India and quite irritated with MIUI 12.0.3 right now and want to try other ROMs. I used to flash a lot in my last device (Redmi Note 3). But, nowadays the process seems a bit complex to me. I am mostly confused with the Firmware/Vendor things which I used to not worry about back in the days. I have a few questions to clarify.
In https://xiaomifirmwareupdater.com/, I can see that Firmware and Vendor both are available as two different files. Is the combination of these two files is what that is available at https://downloads.akhilnarang.dev/MIUI/raphael/ ?
When I am switching ROMs, is it always recommended to flash latest firmware+vendor first ? Right now, I am on MIUI 12.0.3 which is the latest one. So if I want to flash a miui-vendor based ROM, I think I don't need to flash the firmware first while flashing. Am I right ?
If I want to switch to an OSS vendor based ROM from MIUI vendor based ROM or vice-versa, should I first erase Vendor and system partition and then follow the rest of the process?
Does all MIUI vendor based ROM zips contain the vendor itself ? Probably not and that's why latest miui-firmware+vendor should always be flashed before flashing a miui-vendor based ROM. Am I correct?
Does all OSS vendor based ROM zips contain the OSS vendor within itself ? Probably yes and it should not be required to flash miui firmware+vendor before flashing a OSS vendor based ROM. Am I correct?
It will be a great help if someone can clear out my confusions and help me gather courage to go ahead and flash my first ROM for this device. Thanks in advance.

Haven't installed and OSS vendor based ROMs, so I'm a bit sketchy on those details.
1. The first link has vendor and firmware as separate packages. (They are separate, independent projects that package them, but pulled together and linked in the website). This site has a more compete collection, if you look into the archive section. The second link contains vendor and firmware files packaged into single zipped files.
2. You only need to flash firmware and vendor when the requirements are for a later version than currently installed. You have the latest version, so you won't need to flash firmware and vendor until a new version of MIUI is released AND ROMs change requirements to the new versions.
3. Follow the instructions for the individual ROM. I know of one OSS vendor ROM (can't remember which) that requires flashing the latest MIUI fastboot ROM before flashing the custom ROM. Don't know if this is a general rule for OSS vendor ROMs though. Shouldn't normally need to wipe partitions before installing, as the install will take care of that automatically.
4. If it's not an OSS vendor ROM it will not contain any firmware and vendor files. Installing 'normal' ROMs won't touch the existing firmware and vendor, so if you already have the latest MIUI firmware and vendor then you won't need to install them.
5 OSS vendor ROMs should contain the vendor files in the package. I don't believe they have any firmware files though, so you will need to make sure you have the correct firmware installed. Not having used an OSS vendor ROM, this is where I'm a little bit hazy on actual details.
