My Huawei P40 turns on display if email/whatsapp/sms/telegram message comes in, so I can see content without touching phone while driving. Can s23 do that as well? My ex S22 Ultra couldn`t do that, so I sold it.
Nope, the S23 can't do that either. I didn't know that before, too, and its a bit disappointing.

What about using something like Aod notify, only stays on screen for 20 secs initially but you can tap to see if you miss the notification, and I'm sure you can keep the notification for a specified time.

This might seem like a dumb question but whenever I set my phone down and it is moved even in the slightest the Active Display lockscreen turns on. Is there anyway possible to disable that?
That's the cool thing about this phone. Don't worry about it

You will get used to it and come to love it. the great thing is that it doesn't adversely effect your battery, it uses the special built in processors. I thought it was weird at first but now I just tap my phone or bump the table to see my notifications.
I love it because I never have to push the power button to turn my device on. This is a great way to save wear and tear on your power button. A lot of devices that rely on one button all the time (power button) end up with that button not working anymore. If I didn't have this option I would be using my volume rocker to power up my phone.

This is easily my favorite feature about the Moto X. All I gotta do is pick up my phone and it automagically shows me any notifications and is ready to be unlocked. Power button? What's that?

I like this feature. I usually tap my finger on the screen or press off to one side so the phone rocks slightly on the curved back to get the display to come on. As someone else said, it saves a lot of wear on the power button. I can't tell you how often I clicked my Razr Maxx on just to see what time it was, and clicked it off again immediately. The button never wore out, but it's nice not having to do it at all.
I do have a question though. I got the phone on Wednesday and didn't notice this at all until this morning, and I don't know if it's normal or not. While getting ready for work this morning I noticed the Active Display fire on and off a few times in a row. I thought since it was right at 7am that I may have gotten a few emails close together or something, and didn't worry about it.
When I got to work I set my phone on my desk and was reading emails and such and I noticed the display puling on and off about every 5-6 seconds. It fades in, holds for maybe 1 second and fades out. It only had one notification, for Plume (Twitter), which only polls every 15 minutes in the background, so I knew it wasn't getting new notifications repeatedly.
I can't remember if this was happening yesterday and I just opened it up right away to see what it was for, or if something actually changed. I disabled Plume from the Active Display list, which didn't change anything, I got the same result for email (Maildroid) and Snapchat.
I guess it kind of makes sense that it repeats, as there is no LED on the phone, but it seems a little excessive. I don't know how much power is saved by using white on black in the small area of the screen, but it's bugging me a little because I don't remember it doing this before.
Thanks for any input anyone has on this...

It's normal. When you have a notification, the screen pulses instead of having a notification LED.
I haven't measured it, but it's my impression that it slows down the pulsing if the phone sits quietly for a while after the notification happens (I seem to notice that, if I ignore the notification, I don't see it as much). It really uses almost no battery, though, so don't worry about it.
Does the phone always light up when driving? I don't remember it happening on my old X but it's lights up at every bump on my new X.
Thinking I've frozen something I shouldn't have. Did not use assist on either phone.

Thanks for the quick reply. I'm guessing yesterday I either cleared them quickly, or they were present long enough to go slower and I didn't notice the repetition.
I will have to play around with what I actually want notifications for. Plume (Twitter) is the worst, followed by email. I wish I could turn on different channels for Plume so that Mentions/DMs could go to Active Display, but regular tweets didn't, but still have it do all in the notification shade. I might have to just settle for not getting a notification for all new tweets. Or increase my poll time...
Email might get shut off too. I get too much spam to care, and rarely get any emails that are urgent enough to warrant it.
Yes, mine lights up when driving Lol. The second I press on the gas it lights up, tripped me out the first few days owning the device, but I'm used to it now.

Hi, I need a screen with a very bright screen. I am considering buying a nokia 8 but the only thing holding me back is the lack of led notification. Does it bother you or not? Appreciate anyones thoughts.
I don't miss it at all, and now I like the fact that it's not always blinking for something.
The glance screen will tell you if you missed phone calls or SMS, although you do have to move the phone for it to come on.
I thought that I would miss the notification LED, but am getting on fine without it.

thanks, so just moving the phone turns on glance screen? Seems like a good alternative.
Yes moving the phone will turn on the glance screen.
I attach two pictures, one of glance screen in operation and the second of the possible settings for the glance screen. The time-out for the glance screen can be set up to 20 minutes.
I should point out that while the screen on the Nokia 8 will not disappoint for clarity and brightness, that the glance screen is dim (to save battery) and you cannot make it brighter.
Hope that helps
I'm the opposite end of the stick. I think glance is [email protected] and do miss the notification led.

Backlight notification. In other words, use the capacitive buttons as notification leds.

Not really... It only shows counters for missed calls, mails and texts. Missed messages from other apps (like messengers) are not shown. Besides that, the counter font is very tiny. I turned off glance screen after a few days because I found it totally useless...
So, yes: I actually miss a notification LED.

No, you need a custom kernel to be able to do it.
Edit: The apps I was trying (that used the camera flash for notificaitons) didn't work, so I've deleted the links.
Hi,
I saw from some reviews that there is a reflective ring around the front camera which makes it more visible.
Has anyone noticed this? Is it very obvious?
Also, I was wondering whether anyone could post a picture of the screen with the camera cut-out hidden via software. I know that Huawei allows time and notifications to show in the black area and I was wondering if Samsung does the same.
Thanks
Andrea
Hi Andrea,
Yeah, I definitely notice it. It's honestly not bad most of the time. How glaring it is depends on how the light hits it and it's usually not actually bad unless you have the phone angled unnaturally. In other words, through regular usage, you probably won't notice it. The glare in most cases is no worse than the sheen of the phone itself.
Not sure what you mean by "cut-out hidden via software," but Samsung does illuminate the area around the pinhole for notifications.

Thanks for your reply.
I meant the option that reduces the screen size in order to 'hide' the front camera.
(it should be Settings->Display->Full Screen Apps->Advanced->Hide camera cutout)
If I am correct in the past it was just shifting the content down leaving the top portion of the screen black and unused.
Huawei instead was shifting the content down but at the same time was using the top black section for time, notification icons etc...
I was wondering if Samsung improved this function with the latest updates.
Cheers,
Andrea
I just tried this and it shifts all content down, including notification icons.
Yes, I don't understand why they put that chrome ring around the camera. I would think they want to make the cutout less noticeable, not more.
But it turns out to be one of those things that is more annoying in principle than in reality. As Moxie3000 said, the ring itself is not too noticeable most of the time (I hadn't even noticed it until I read about it and specifically looked), because if the light is reflecting off the ring, it's reflecting off your screen too, so you wouldn't normally use it in that position. When I notice it mostly is when the top of the screen is otherwise dark and there is a reddish glow (which also varies depending on the viewing angle) from what appears to be a coating on the camera lens.

Thank you for checking.
To describe it as chrome is rather sensationalist you can only notice it if you really look hard

I saw the S20 FE at my local store and it was right next to an S20+ and A51 5G. The reflective ring is barely more noticeable than the others. Funny thing is the A51 5G looks almost identical. It's like they took the chassis from that and increased the processor, screen refresh rate, and added wireless charging.
I recently purchased a new Galaxy Watch 3, coming from my trusty Gear S3. One thing that is annoying me to no end is this "Screensaver" feature when the watch goes to sleep while an app is open. Pretty hard to describe so here is a video with a side by side comparison between the Watch 3 and my Gear S3.
photos.app.goo.gl/YiaqCt8L5rL2mncE7
Both watches have the exact same watch face. Notice that when the Watch 3 goes to sleep while on anything but the Watch face, it switches to this stupid Digital screensaver. The net effect of this is that 90% of the time when the screen is in "always on" mode it uses this stupid screensaver instead of my chosen watchface.
I should not that I am using a custom WatchMaker watch face.
Is there anyway to disable this "feature" so that it behaves like the S3?
I noticed the same! I expect it is because of the too small battery. Its not always on exactly, its always on to a Screensaver.
Would be nice to be able to change it...
Same here. I'd like to kill this "feature", i.e. when timed out revert to the "Always on" watchface, not the default screensaver.
Mine does this too, but falls back to the Watch Face AOD after about 20 secs. I think it was actually designed this way to allow you to go back to the screen you were on before the screen saver was triggered, by pressing the top button.

Mine doesn't fall back to AOD watch face at all. It can stay all day on the "screensaver watchface". That's what I'd like to switch off.
Reducing the time, but still not a fix

I'd love to get rid of this screensaver watch face as well, however, as others have mentioned, for me it also goes away fairly quickly. In your Galaxy Wearable app, if you go into "Display", what setting do you have under "Show last app". Mine is currently set to "When screen turns on again within 20 seconds". Unfortunately, there is no "off" for this, and 20 seconds is the minimum. If you have this set higher (e.g. to 1hr) I wonder if you'd see what you are seeing.
Regardless, if anyone figures out how to disable this, I'd love to know as well!
Same issue here. It is annoying. Following.
Same problem coming from the Galaxy Watch to the Watch3. Following hoping for a solution.
I hope someone can help me. I really hate that Samsung no longer offers the little LED light notification. I hate the AOD. I try using the app aodnotify but the app is kinda buggy and eats a lot of battery. So I decided and bought this amazing fancy expensive cover case yesterday. I put my phone inside, download the app and said some apps pop up when some notification comes. And yes, it works. For a 5 seconds. Once the notification dissapeare the cover not repeat it again. You always have to press the damn power button. So, is there any ways that the notification flashes like all the time or just every 5 seconds? Any suggestion? Thank you
