Hello,
I have gotten a new S23 (regular), which was a freebie from AT&T. My friend decided to be gracious and to give me one, however I am still dealing with SIM unlock. Is it possible it download a firmware like -U1 to work with my current carrier in Japan?
It's possible to flash it to U1, but it won't SIM unlock the device, just change it to the unbranded software. If you want it SIM unlocked, he either has to pay off the phone (its free after monthly credits) or you pay whatever shady service on Ebay to unlock it for you.

He traded a Note 2 for the phone (There is a deal at AT&T for any Samsung phone comes a free S23).
Yeah, after bill credits. Once the phone is paid off, they'll unlock it.

If it was brought from a carrier (ATT, Tmobile etc) and you have completed the contract or paid ETF or paid phone in full, you can contact the carrier.
They will unlock for free.

No. If you are on stock ROM, code should work.
I had phone in the same state (running kitkat, rooted with towelroot). When I completd/terminated my contract, got the code from ATT and it worked.
You can only try the code few times. After that phone will lock to the operator and no code will work after that (even if right one).
So make sure the ebay seller is giving you the right code for your IMEI.
If its under contract, even 3rd party seller may not be able to unlock. Check with them before you buy.
ATT has given me the unlock code in years gone by, even when I didn't have the phone paid off. I explained that I need local SIM-as-you-go accounts when traveling for work. (true BTW)
Hello, i'm considering in buy a brand new Z3C online (from my carrier discount program), how ever i can't use any device without CM13. I wonder if any Z3C can have the bootloader unlocked.. and if not, if someone have a way to unlock the bootloader without the Sony method.
I can't check if the device i want to buy can be or can't with the dialer code as it would be bough online.
Impossible to say, if it's a sim free network unlocked device they supply then there's a good chance it'll be unlockable. The only network I know of that supply sim free network unlocked device's for both payg and contract are three UK. Without checking the device before buying it's a lottery basically.

Thanks. In the past, my carrier was well know to be the only one in the country with unlock devices that they sell and contract free. I'll call then and ask if it still is like that (i think so).
Also, a guy said that it is possible to install custom ROM with a locked bootloader... far as i know it isn't true. I'm right, or this guy is?
I reached out to sprint for the unlock code to unlock my phone. The rep, via chat, told me that my phone is already unlocked to be used locally and internationally. I asked him to give the code anyway just in case, and he said "Unlocking code or MSL code is only for older devices that are not unlock capable."
I thought only Verizon's phones were sold unlocked. Has sprint started doing this as well on new phones?

No its uicc locked domestically if purchased through sprint until paid off, internationally yes its capable of using any sim on non domestic towers.
Once fully paid off etc you can ask for it to have a uicc unlock so it will accept a att sim etc.
I bought it brand new off eBay. Maybe that's why the agent said it is already unlocked?

A friend of mine tried to put a different sim on his Sprint phone outside of the USA and couldn't. He had to call Sprint to unlock it.

Is it a SM-950U or U1 ?
U1 is unbranded version and pre-unlocked. The U is the carrier variant.
The U would have been locked unless purchased full retail and active on a account atleast 50 days per sprint policy.
Sprint technically dosnt have to unlock it if it dosnt meet their guidelines.

Did you try inserting another SIM card in your Note 8 and see if you can place a call?
If it works with a card other than Sprint, it should work even abroad.

"Did you try inserting another SIM card in your Note 8 and see if you can place a call? "
I don't have one to try it. Otherwise, that would have been one of my first tries.
mine got unlocked automatically after ~50 days last fall
i didn't contact them or anything, one day it just ... happened
it was paid in full from Samsung since they had that sweet trade-in deal for Note7 owners

I had to wait 50 days, and it automatically unlocked. No lease, no payments.
Apparently the only way is to call them, If I buy this phone used would I have any chance of unlocking it in the future ?
hey all
i have one note galaxy SM-N960U
VERSION ONE UI : 2.0
AT&T USA ORIGINAL CARRIER
I need a Flash Rom to unlock it ,to work with my new carrier in Morocco
I think you need at&t to unlock it or pay one of those sketchy places online which I don't recommend.
CAN YOU RECOMMEND A FAST WAY
For me, when I paid off my phone (was on the AT&T payment plan because of a BOGO deal)
I was able to use the ATT website, enter the IMEI and some other bull****, then ATT emailed me the unlock code.
As far as I know, this only unlocked the sim and I switched to Xfinity Mobile.

OK, but now you need balance, not free, I search other method
Unlock a Phone or Device - AT&T Device Unlock Portal
www.att.com
This is what I used, it was free.
I'm considering purchasing a couple of P5a5G from TM but I want to know if the bootlaoder is unlockable so that I can root.
Not seeing the phone on their site.

lol, that might make it a little difficult.
I was considering a subsidized phone...maybe I'll look at the Pixel 6. Will TM unlock the bootloader of their phones?

Get an unlocked variant, usually, carrier locked devices can't be unlocked...
If T-Mobile does offer the 5a, and if the TMO 5a can have the bootloader unlocked (likely but not guaranteed), it will first require a permanent SIM unlock and wait 40 days (apparently). Normally TMO won't permanently SIM unlock a phone before it is paid off (and a temporary SIM unlock will not allow a bootloader unlock). You could either wait the two years for the phone to be paid off, or you could prepay the balance on the phone. Prepaying the balance greatly reduces the financial advantage of buying through TMO. If you are a long-term customer of TMO you might be able to convince a service rep to do a full SIM unlock for you, but the cases I found of this were for multi-line customers who clearly were not going to change networks. Just buy an unlocked phone from Google or Best Buy.
