Is anyone using Android Auto in countries where AA isn't available? - Android Auto General

Title says it all.
This is the country list: https://partnermarketinghub.withgoogle.com/brands/android-auto/overview/country-availability/
I think the situation was different a few years back with older versions of AA, where it was relatively easy to circumvent the restrictions and still use AA anyway on a car's head unit. But with current A12 / A13 OS plus the current versions of AA, do people still have success using AA on their head unit in countries where AA isn't officially available?

Found a solution after search through local discussion forums.
The problem actually lies with "Google Play Services" which is the one responsible for detecting where your location is, not "Android Auto". The key to working around this issue of using Android Auto in an unapproved country is to download the Google Play Services with a particular build variant. If you retrieve the version number of the currently installed Google Play Services on your phone, you will see something like "Version: xx.xx.xx (190400-xxxxxxxxx)" where the number in brackets is the "build variant". For A12, you will probably have 190400-xxxxxxxxx as your build variant, and A11 will likely have 150400-xxxxxxxxx.
The only build variants known so far that bypass country checks are 200400 for A12, and 170400 for A11. APKMirror has these build variants that you can download. Once you have replaced "google play services" with the one you have downloaded from APKMirror, you are good to go. The only question left now is - how do you prevent Google Play from auto-updating Google Play Services back to the newest and problematic version?

You can uncheck auto updates of the play store and just regularely update through 3rd party versions.
Thanks for posting!

You must be a naive to believe this, anything is available in any country.

AA isn't available in my country, but it works on my older cars.
On my new car BMW iX 2022, it doesn't work and I get an error showing "connection failed"
I posted about it here with more details:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/android-auto-connection-failed.4493825/
I'm going to try and find one of those google play services builds and try and hope to get it working.
Update:
Unfortunately, I couldn't get an apk to install successfully.
I tried many APKs from apkmirror that show build variant 200400, but they all give me an error "App not installed as package appears to be invalid"

A:Update AA manually for "This item isn't available in your country".

EDIT: Updating the AA app manually did the trick.
AA was working for me yesterday.
Now it shows an error due to enforcing of the country whitelist that I guess does not include my Canada.
Not sure where yet or how to bypass. AA app is the same, and Google Play Services is a few weeks old.
Previously log said "Country is not whitelisted: " + ph.c() + " but gearhead.apk is installed, so we continue"
Maybe it activated by date ? Maybe it's an online switch ? AA won't start on devices that I've now turned GPS and WiFi off.
There are other whitelists and blacklists in the AA app that may be activated in future: mobile device, head unit/car.
Headunit (or my headunit app) does not currently seem to validate headunit certificate(s) but there is code for that & I wonder if that may be enabled also.
EDIT: Updating the AA app manually did the trick.
There is an AA startup phase where you are prompted to install or update the needed apps: Music, Maps, whatever...
I've gone through this several times; not sure why it doesn't always stick.
At this point I get a popup dialog saying "This item isn't available in your country."
Which is exactly what we get trying to download apps not enabled for our country.
I created a new account claiming to be in the US, but that didn't help; probably Google's IP detection knows I wasn't in the US.
Hmm, maybe if I manually update the needed apps as well as the AA app ?; I'm still using the original AA app.
So manually updating the AA app worked and you can now continue using AA?
(Sorry if I did not post this right. Its my first time on xda.)

That is correct.
This will be an ongoing problem for those of us outside approved countries, and it could get worse.
Once it detects that there is an update, it refuses to run before the update is done, and outside the US the AA app can't normally be auto-updated by Play.
And most of us want the features we need to be logged into Google for, so disabling update detection is not entirely feasible.

Google Camera

So has anyone noticed that the Google Camera app is no longer visible in the play store? It may just be in the USA where I am, but the only way I can find the Google Camera app, is when I'm behind a VPN for another country. Anyone else notice this or know why?
I read something about this the other day. It has disappeared from the Play Store, it's not just in the US. You can still find it on APKMirror.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.GoogleCamera&hl=en
The direct link still works, but unless you own a Nexus 5, 6, 9, 5X or 6P, you will not be able to install it as Google has restricted the app to those devices. Further, you can not search for the app on the PC or the Play Store, which I believe means the link's only purpose is to allow for updating the app for the Nexus line. It's still possible to download it from APK Mirror, but for devices other than the five mentioned, it probably will report an older version, if it installs at all.
The real question is, what is Google planning here? We just don't know.

No idea! What's weird is that I saw people on Reddit saying they were from Canada and they were able to search the app in the playstore, and after using a VPN and spoofing my location, I was able to search it in chrome as well! I'm not sure what they're doing, but it's really strange!
could be a problem of playstore.. this has existed for the past few weeks now.. but searching for the app on google still routes you to the playstore.. wonder why app cant be visible on the playstore itself
There is one other app they have with this behavior: Google Play Services. You can search for com.android.google.gms in the Play Store on both PC and device. However it won't show up, and you have to use a direct link to see it. Unlike Google Camera however, Play Services is for every phone.
Hopefully it's a mistake on Google's part and it will be fixed soon.
For what it's worth, today on nexus 6 with pico open gapps, and AICP 13 (8.0 Oreo), the above link gave "not available in your country" (USA) in browser, but copying the link in the browser had an option/link to play store, which did work, and after install Gcamera works! I was missing photosphere, so thanks!

Android Auto doesn't find apps

Android Auto isn't detecting apps on my radio. I have Podcast Addict and Google Play on the list of available apps. However, Audible, Spotify, and Pandora don't appear in the list of available apps. Is there something I am supposed to do to get the apps to appear?
I am using SyncGen3 w/ Android Auto and a Galaxy S7 Active phone.
Applications mentioned above must have following to be visible at AA Google play
1) valid AA certification
2) valid country code
I assume you have issue with 2. Please identify your current country and we can check. Workaround is to use fakeGPS/fakeGmail based on US, install required apps and then unlink and connect your original gmail country. This works for me also.
I experienced the same behaviour. I installed an app compatible with AA and didn't find it on the display in my car. Even rebooting the phone didn't help. After some days after I installing a further AA app the first one got visible as well.

Google Assistant update on Lineage OS?

Hello everyone.
As you may have heard, Google is making its assistant available for other phones:
"Google says it’ll make the bot available to all phones running Android 6.0 and newer, as long as they’re running Google Play Services."
I'm under Lineage OS on the 128GB Mi5, and I see Google Play Services listed in the Apps section of the settings.
Is it safe to assume Lineage users will get it in due time, effortlessly?
Thank you.
Yes, as long as you have the Google search app and play services (as it is replacing Now on Tap)

ZTE Axon M 128GB Chinese Edition Oreo Update removes Google functionality

Yesterday I updated to Oreo as the ZTE Axon M update service showed a new update available. On update Google Play would no longer launch and Play Services was not functioning. The Google Application services were pre-installed on the phone when purchased and shipped from AliExpress.
I figured I would reset the phone and on reset all Google functionality was removed.
I figured I would simply install the GAPPS services again and followed this thread:
https://android.gadgethacks.com/how...-store-without-gapps-google-services-0176241/
However once everything installs and I launch the Play Store I get a white blank screen.
I would have expected to be prompted for the Google Account login screen and if I check Accounts from settings I can see that there is a Google Account listed but not configured and if I click it I am told to add the account from the relevant app. There is no other shortcut installed though other than Google Play Store which hangs as described previously.
I have tried various other ways to get this sorted out but the end result is the same, inability to add a google account and no way to launch the play store.
I considered YalpStore but its really not fit for purpose because anything that requires the Google Play Services framework will not run.
My phone is not rooted but it appears it does not need to be for GAPPS install functionality. I can see many threads that say this works without the need for rooting (and in any event there are no guides for rooting an Axon M).
My question is simply how do I the Google Play Store and Google Play Services to work on the ZTE Axon M with the Oreo update ? It is driving me nuts and I would never have proceeded with the update if I had realised it would simply be removed.
Same

Did you try the same package used for the Xiaomi devices? I have to play on that (it's the rev 2).

I tried, same issue crashing
I tried multiple methods too, but to no avail.
I do suspect a possibility. The previous time when i managed to get my gapps working when i first got the Chinese set, i had to disable the "Mi-Assistant" App as that was the one preventing my Google Play Services from Auto-Running even though it was set to allow. This time, I can not even see Google Play Services in the Auto-Run Manager and while i tried to force stop and disable the "Mi-Assistant" App, it does not allow me to disable.
I hope this info can help provide some leads to an expert who would be able to help us get back our GApps running again.
Thanks.
I do agree... meanwhile take a look here: https://code.tutsplus.com/articles/10-alternative-android-app-stores--cms-20999
good morning I found the application with the google play store inside the play store zte. After several attempts I managed to install a heavy game (1.3 GB) as ADERA disabling all the Chinese apps, keeping the display always active, I only downloaded via wi-fi. So I managed to download it without problems (I do not know which of these changes worked). the application has a triangular design with central red, the word Google followed by two Chinese characters
Hi, are you on the Android Oreo Update?

yes oreo 8.1 axon m 6 / 128gb. If there is the possibility I can post images of the app. One thing the app inside contains the play store but the apps that you download do not appear on the home of the device but within the app itself
Sounds like an emulator to me.. Would be great if you could provide the images of the app. Any small information helps.
Btw, to all, i did manage to download a GApps installer which seemed promising, cause at least it went into the login page for Google Account. But then the error of requesting to update "Google Play Services" popped up again and again and everything went down the drain again. Will try further and hopefully will have good news.
I'm new on the forum you have to explain to me how to post the images. thank you
Dears... did you see that in the ZTE Store?
Search for Google Play...

There is an application in the ZTE Market that installs a pseudo Google Play but it is sandboxed somehow and you have to launch this app to get access to your installs - feels very insecure to me - I just want a clean Google Play on the device
unfortunately for now it is the only solution I found. Otherwise you must use third-party app stores such as amazon, aptoide, etc.

I posted a link with a few of alternative stores (the best is to get the apk stand-alone ihmo) but if it is to follow that sandbox ways, as suggest, create a new "junky" account just to have it registered.
Any Update??!!
