Newbie Question - Please Respond

Hi,
I am tempted to flash a custom ROM onto my Xperia, but before i do that, i have a couple of questions that i hope someone here might be able to answer.
1. Is there a guide available that explains everything step-by-step? I.e. is flashing of ROM the only thing to do? or are there other tasks required like flashing SPL or something like that? (I literally have no idea what SPL and similar terms mean either)
2. If after having played with a custom ROM, i plan to revert back to the original stock ROM and settings... is that possible?
Best Regards.

It's a personal preference. You just need to try different ones to see what you like. It's like asking whats the best movie, everyone is gonna have there own opinion. But a good stable rom would by cyanogen 4.0.4.
i was wondering CM4.0.4/CM4.1.11.1/CM4.1.99/akirah1.6. which of this is the better pick?

[Q] New to all of this...

Hi I just got my Samsung Captivate and have already rooted it. I want to add a ROM to it (Most likely Phoenix 2.2.1)
I was wondering, do I need Froyo 2.2 to use this ROM, or will the ROM install that for me? Sorry if this is a dumb question but I'm honestly confused by the whole thing
Thanks for your help
The rom gives you 2.2.1. Make sure you read, read, read
I did read but its a very confusing thread ^_^
Thank you for your help though!
I talking about everything in general. Read. God luck

Nobody can answer that because nobody knows your needs. All roms have bugs, even stock roms.
Best thing you can do is go try some and see which you like best.
Also, this question has been asked over and over again, you could also go and read some of those topics.

[Q] rExtreme vs Ripper ROMs

Currently running rExtreme v8.1 and happy with it really, just got the itch to flash!!
Thinking of trying Ripper v15.1, as it seems largely the same, maybe with more customisation options.
I know I need to try it for myself, but before I do, I just wondered can anyone else who has tried both ROMs advise if they have felt any other benefit(s) of Ripper over rExtreme?
Thanks to anyone who replies
