Are there any workarounds?
Patch the image file and flash using fastboot. Or report the issue to Magisk GitHub repo for permanant fix.

I already messed up and need to replace my boot.img for my 3T. If anyone can extract theirs or know where to lead me that would be helpful.
Here you go.

Or go to OP3T dev forum, and download a full OTA in the TWRP thread.

Our devices don't have a recovery partition to flash to.
Read the install instructions correctly:
https://twrp.me/motorola/motorolamotox4.html
You should use "fastboot boot twrp-3.2.1-0-payton.img" instead.
Then, follow along:
This will temporarily boot TWRP on your device. If you are using a lockscreen pin/pattern/password and do not get prompted to enter your password, reboot to the bootloader and try again. Go to install and browse to the zip and install the zip. The zip will install TWRP to both boot slots. Installing TWRP at this time will remove root if you are currently rooted.

I think the right command is this:
fastboot flash boot [file name].img
No,
If you accidently flash TWRP to your device using fastboot instead of temporarily booting the image, you will need to download the latest firmware for your device and reflash the boot image.

I could be wrong but it seems like you are trying to flash TWRP to the recovery partition and there's no such thing on this phone. You have to temporarily boot TWRP and the keep following the instructions.
Is anybody able to backup / restore the phone with android one on encrypted file system??, im using the official twrp, but restoring backups just cause bootloops
is it necessary to unlock the bootloader before?
If you're asking if the bootloader needs to be unlocked to install magisk, absolutely!
Sorry for the dumb question but how do you unlock the bootloader on the Fi Android one Version?
Potential fix

If you are still haven't fixed this yet the issue is you need to fastboot boot the boot twrp image and then flash the flash image inside twrp. The guide on TWRP official will give you a guide on how to do this, the files required are also there.
I received an update in Magisk just a while. Anx opening up i have found that my magisk is not not installed and so the root is gone.
I clicked on install button, it says Install with zip and another option is install with patched boot.
I clicked on install with zip, it downloaded a zip in download folder, but as we dont have recovery now i dont know what to do with that zip. or should i go for patched boot img. and if yes? then how? thanks!
I had it too and root was detected after I rebooted my phone.
did u update? and how?
+1
I lose my root, magisk don't update, and rebooting don't solved.
I'm getting tired of A2.

Just use as is, flash with fastboot, or patch the unpatched one with magisk manager and flash that. More wasn't needed on my side.

I flashed patched_boot.img, now it shows magisk installed . but root is not there still. i have one option INSTALL, clicking it says 1)via zip 2) patched boot
Syed Shahriar said:
my apology, here's what i should do:
1) fastboot flash patched_boot.img
2) reboot set and install latest magisk apk
3) hit install from that app
is it so?

No the patched boot image already is like installing magisk. Or to put it differently that's what happens when you install it the normal way so all you need is to flash the boot image and have magisk manager installed

I couldn't find a boot.img in the dump files. only bootanimations.zip but I don't think that's it.
Can you please tell me the directory or the file name so I can search for it?
Thanks.
