Question Chinese rom options - Lenovo Legion Y700

When buying Y700 from AliExpress, are there any guides or FAQS that list the advantages of global rom vs stock rom?
I've seen general terms like "Global rom is limited" etc.
Is it possible to tell AliExpress to leave the stock Chinese rom, and then update OTA (via VPN) without any bugs?
Or is it better to start with global rom, then flash chinese rom, and then update?
I've been reading alot and have seen people do both approaches, but I'm curious what you experienced guys would do if you could do it all again.
Also, is there a way for Widevine L1 while unlocked, or best to keep it locked? The stock Chinese rom works well, or are there problems?

ROM Confusion (despite other threads)

My Mix has been dispatched so should get it soon. It's from GearBest. I'm pretty sure it won't be opened.
It'll be used in the UK.
ROM-wise, I see people talking about:
Chinese version
Vendor version
International version
I'm guessing it'll come with the Chinese version.
I presume the best thing for me would be to put the International version 6.12.8. I see it's a stripped down version of the China one with built-in Gapps support.
My questions are:
1) If I get it unlocked and put TWRP on it and flash this ROM, does this mean it's ROOTED? Or is rooting a separate process.
I don't want my phone to be rooted because it means banking apps won't run on it even if you use Hide Root stuff.
2) That ROM is legit isn't it? It sounds different to the vendor one that I've read people talking about that's on version 8.xxxx. Is that less legit than the one on xiaomi.eu?
Sorry for being a nub.
Ah wait... doing more research...
So the Chinese ROM is 8.0.11.
The DEVELOPER ROM is 6.12.8.
Is the Developer ROM on en.miui.com the same as the International one on xiaomi.eu?

Bought it with fake ROM - what options do I have now?

Hi, I bought for my wife Mi5 from Geekbuying from their Spain warehouse for quick delivery (adding express option). I paid more for the phone than from China, but time was a critical element there. It should come with Global ROM, and it is but fake one being CN version with some additional languages.
In general I don't mind that, but annoying thing is that I can set language as English, but there no locale for any European country including UK. I spent quite a few hours to figure out what is going on. Warranty is from Geekbuying, so any upgrades (manual as OTA not working on this) will void that.
I manually wanted to check if I can upgrade to any official ROMs, and it was declining, however once it went kind of through with reboot etc. on the official global (non-dev) but after restart it was still fake one. later retries were failing on that ROM.
Just in case, I requested a unblock code from Xiaomi and just got that one. I want to understand what options I have now and if official global ROM will add UK locale etc. Maybe I should go for some other ROM like CM or something. Please bear in mind that my wife is not a tech y person. at all...
Please advise and all suggestions are appreciated.
Well you can flash Official MIUI Global Rom via MiFlash.
1) Download MiFlash
2) Download Mi5 Fastboot ROM that you want to use (Global Stable ROM will be perfect for non techy person)
3) Reboot phone into Fastboot
4) Put phone into EDL using the command "fastboot oem edl" (without quotes)
5) Launch MiFlash - it should detect it as a COM device. Flash the ROM you downloaded earlier.
6) Once it's done, you'll be back to original Official Global MIUI.
For more info please visit MIUI Global Site.
unlock bootloader first, then you can flash any rom you like

Stay in the MIUI!
Joy and Color and a lot of cool settings already available (no extra mods, apps, etc for simple functions).
Go for the european ROMs if the phone will be operating in Europe (better gps, and other small but significant differences).
If your amata is coming from a stock version you can present to her the AOSCP or RR clean, light and fast & well supported.

Did you proceed? Let us know. Grazie.
Hi, thanks for information.
I got the code to unlock it, but haven't done that yet. Some people are saying it is better to keep it locked if possible.
I have a question what is that EU ROM? Is it Global or different one? Please point to the right source.
I tried to update using Mi app (recovery), but it is failing with error 2099 or official ROM is recognised as unofficial. Fastboot is not working at all as per now.
BTW I am quite angry for Geekbuying as they asked me to return that phone to China (if I want) using post office (several weeks shipping) even though I paid local return option when bought it.

The EU ROM is xiaomi.eu one. Can be found at xiaomi.eu of course. It's actually a China rom (stable or dev, your choice) but with all Chinese bloatware removed and with european languages added. The advantage over Official Global version is exactly the fact that is based on China ROM. China ROMs get updates way more often than Global ones.

I am on this for the last 2h or so and don't know what to do. Power with volume up or down? with down mi app doesn't recognise usb connection grrr.
On EU site, I found those ROMs but explanation there is poor. TWRP is needed and link to dozens of different versions and which to choose? Do I have to unlock it? Xiaomi warns that it won't be secure or fingerprint won't be reliable. That is a key feature for my wife on this phone so don't want to mess with it.
If I only new that is so much hassle with it, I would convince my wife to go with OnePlus3 as I have and no hassle what so ever and with UK warranty etc. for just a little bit more £.
I am trying to unlock, as I think it is the only way to try something I haven't yet.
There is a problem - when accessing via volume down to fastboot it is dropping out usb connection after some time, before phone is verified and unlocked.
How to overcome that?
TBH I am kind of geeky person, but I have enough of that. If I won't get that sorted today, phone is going back to where it came from!
To enter in fastboot mode in order to unlock? Power+volume down. If your device is not recognised that means fastboot drivers are not installed correctly. For xiaomi.eu you do need an unlocked bootloader. As for what versions to use? For TWRP last version is 3.0.2-3. If you ask about roms? Last stable version is 8.1.6. Last developer version is 6.12.29 (that is Nougat and still have some bugs). I advise you to go for last stable version. Fingerprint issues? Never encountered one. And I'm using xiaomi.eu roms since MIUI7.

I've just seen your last post. The fastboot connection is droppend when the unlocking process is somewhere at 50%? Are you still on that fake rom? If yes, that's the problem. To unlock bootloader you need to be on an official rom (China dev would be the best).

Fastboot drivers - goolge driver install failed on several occasions and 2 different versions. Yes, I am still on that fake ROM. I can't get even china ROM replaced on it, because apparently I need to unlock it, but I can't... This is getting mad.
I understand your frustration...but it's not necessarily Gearbest's fault. Xiaomi delayed several months the Global version. Gearbest couldn't sell globally phones with only chinese language could they? They did what they could at that time in order to satisfy the worldwide demand. Probably they still sell from their initial batch. And I think that phones from Gearbest was delivered by Xiaomi with that "fake" rom. Why? I didn't wanted to buy one from Gearbest especially because of "fake" rom issue. So I waited until a chinese friend of mine was going home for holidays. He went to a Xiaomi showroom and he called me and told me that the seller told him their MI5 have only chinese language. Told him that is totally fine and to buy it as it is because at that point Global version was out so I could flash it without any issue. When he came back to UK. When we met he had a huge grin on his face "The seller ordered a phone especially for you and this one have English aswell". Guess what? Was with the fake rom =) so I had to go through whole nightmare with going from fake rom to China dev. So yeah...basically my phone was sold by Xiaomi China, in a chinese showroom with a fake rom.
Driver signature enforcement removed didn't help with drivers, still have a problem.
I have enough. 4h digging on the web with installing software, drivers etc. and nothing. I can't remember when I struggled so much with some sort of electronics last time.

It was geekbuying, not gearbest.
Anyway, why they haven't installed EU ROM instead?
Do you have any idea how to install official ROM then without unlock? Using update on the phone doesn't work, update via MI app on PC doesn't work. I tried all 4 versions of official ROM.

EU Rom wasn't available for a while neither. Flashing official rom? You need MI PC Suite. Here is how you do it:
http://xiaomitips.com/guide/how-to-fix-bricked-mi-5-with-locked-bootloader-and-update-to-global-rom/
You need to this anyway as a necessary step to unlock bootloader. Later you can decide if you want to keep your bootloader locked or not.

****! I haven't done any update yet and my phone is in the MI logo loop. I can access fastboot and that is it. Can't load the system, can't access volume up+power anymore!!!
Now, I can't even send it back!
Step 2 – Now grab your Mi 5 phone. Press and hold Volume Up (+) and Power buttons simultaneously until you see an image of a phone with USB cable.
Can't do that as MI logo is appearing only and no cable image anymore...
Managed to install miflash and that seemed to improve drivers so managed to unlock it and flash it using miflash to official stable global rom for now.

That's good news. From now on you won't have any more issues. It's your choice if you want to stay on official stable global. But you must keep in mind that global stable gets updates only every couple of months. Last global stable is from October (8.1.2) with security patches from July (if I remember correctly) while China global gets updates more often. Last China stable is 8.1.6 with security patches from 1st December.

I don;t need weekly updates. My wife wouldn't be pleased with so frequent ones. Every 2-3 months is OK.
I think I will try EU ROM too now. The thing is that even latest Global doesn't have UK locale but has some EU countries compare to the fake one. I hope UE has it. Do you know that by any chance?

In EU ROM there's no option to change locale. Xiaomi.eu was started by UK fan community so I can assume that is coming with UK locale by default. If you want to know if UK english language is available, yes it is. Anyway locale on MIUI affects only few things: browser startup page, themes store and weather provider. Chinese locale i.e is using weather.cn therefore won't provide weather informations outside China. I'm using EU ROM in UK and I get weather informations just fine on my MI5. Browser startup page doesn't have any quick links to chinese fishy websites and if I miss a theme or two in Themes Store who cares?

Just received my Mi 9 Chinese version, just some questions.

Hello guys;
A friend of mine went to mainland China and brought me an Mi 9 Chinese version;
We both are from Brazil, and I'm thinking about keep the Chinese version, is there any major downgrade to stay on it?
I was searching around the forum about to flash the European version, but I found it difficult and I'm so worried about mess everything and brick it.
So, that being said, I'm not a heavy user, I just need it for Android Auto, Spotify, Whatsapp and the banking application (mainly it's important).
What you guys think?
Does it have a very detailed step-by-step from Chinese rom for Global/Europe?
Thanks everybody!

I have the same one 8gb ram China phone, I am in UK, first thing my 4g don't work as I need a band 20 (800) of UK networks 4g, but a global rom should sort that out, you need to unlock the bootloader first for that you need to log into your mi account and than keep using the phone for 360 hours than you will be allowed bootloader unlock, if the 4g working? cheers

Flashing a Global or any rom will not do anything to your band 20. So far it is not possible to modify the bands on the Mi 9.
@SanderVisions, I have flashed Xiaomi.eu rom without major problem, it is quite easy but you need to unlock bootloader first. I couldn't flash Global rom on my phone but I think it is my mistake (I messed up with the flash tool at first). Anyway, quite satisfied with the Xiaomi.eu so far, at least it is working for me

Hi, SanderVisions,
I´m in the same situation. I was in Shanghai 2 weeks ago and buy a chinese 8 gb Mi 9. I´m from Brazil too and my bootloader is 2 days of be unlocked.
When you say "european version" you mean xiaomi.eu ROM or the EEA version of official firmware from xiaomi ?
Because it´s made more sense to flash the GLOBAL version if you want to stay in official firmware.
But, as far as I know, to change to other ROM you need a unlocked bootloader and there are some reports that bank applications can have problems with it. You can´t look the bootloader again, if you change the ROM region
Or maybe this problem is related to the root process.
Maybe someone can give more info about unlocked bootloader/ root and bank applications.
At the moment, I think that I will stay with the chinese firmware some more days/weeks until the developers explore a little more of this great phone.
Thanks
Hello guys, I think I'll be in the chinese version for now, when there's a workaround to make the bank app run in unlocked bootloaders I will change it.
My 4G works with no problems here in Brazil, everything works perfect in this phone, just the bloatware chinese, my only concern if this apps will drain my whole battery.

Good thing your 4g is working, someone I know have installed the global rom which sorts out the 4g problem in UK, I am just waiting for the 360 days to be over so that I can unlock bootloader, when you root after bootloader unlocking there is a settings in magisk to hide magisk from apps and if its checked Google pay and other banking apps works but some people still get problems, cheers
this might be helpful,

New Xiaomi user

I purchased a 6/128 global used off swappa. It's set to be delivered in a few days. To be honest, I should have researched a bit before buying because I'm pretty lost. Looking for some knowledge.
I think I understand the bootloader unlock deal, going forward tho are there certain twrp recoveries for certain models? I've read the threads and doesn't seem like any of them are working fully yet, yet I see where people have rooted and flashed other roms so they must work well enough? Are certain roms only compatible with certain models?
I also gather there are 3 different versions?
EU = European
CN = China
? = Global
Yet I see roms labeled eea, eu etc. Basically, I'm just a bit confused and looking for some plain insight.
Every TWRP could be unstable at the moment, but i saw that there is information about compatibility so check the thread comments.
(MI = Global as far as i know)
EDIT:
For global firmware, use this by @randomblame
for chinese firmware/xiaomi.eu use this by wzsx150
I don't know what to use for EU firmware, but i'd try the same as for Global.

With my limited experience with Xiaomi, I wasn't sure if these were common issues or just more so because the phones relatively new. I've been with Android since pre-ordering the HTC/T-Mobile g1 but for some reason, reading on this phone is confusing me. I went with it because of the price to performance ratio and am sure I'll get a grasp on it. Thanks for the reply. My first steps will be unlocking the bootloader and obtaining root, the waiting period is new to me as well but I'm ok with that. I'll most likely want more stock Android but am willing to give MIUI a chance.

Question Where to get (older) chinese firmware?

I want to downgrade my phone from PD2145B_A_5.11.6 to an earlier version because of performance issues.
Does anyone have a source to get the chinese ROMs?
