Hi guys,
Picked up my wizard this morning. I knew out of the box that it wasn't going to be what I wanted and after reading for about a hour today I have sucessfully sim and cid unlocked my phone and flashed it to the 2.3 custom rom I found here.
The info on the forum cut my learning curve by about 90% so thx guys!

You get my vote for Noobie of the year!!!!
You came,
You read,
You flashed your Rom!
Thanks for showing us that sometimes it does happen this way.
Welcom to XDA-Dev and enjoy the Wiz...
I second kyphur's words!
Congrats and thank you for taking the time to research first!

Nest time I see some one-time-poster I'm gonna place a post with this topic link in it

Yes. Excellent job. Now you should work on seeing if you can fix the dropped calls issue with that ROM while using data apps
Good to see some successful posts.. out of many unsuccessful ones.
impressive! didn't think it was possible anymore but I have reason to continue living! thanks ec9!
In the famous words of myspace addicts...."you're in my top 8!"....
But since I'm on T-Mobile I can say...."you're in myfav5!"

That is amazing to see now. Very impressive.
hey!!
ec9, i feel exactly the same way as you!! i started the same way as you did. this device is awesome, i bought it the 1st week it was out went around looking how to customize it. after reading a lot on here ive successfully unlocked and flashed my 2nd ROM! it was moliskis rom. awesome site... Thank you all for making it what it is!
Just f*ucking Google it...
I too, came to XDA on a chance Google search. After spending several hours reading and chasing various links around, I identified my device as a G4, performed the reception fix, CID-unlocked it via the $42 IMEI site, and flashed it with Molski 3.0.0.0 -- NO PROBLEMS WHATSOEVER. (Except for missed calls, non-responsive buttons, etc., but that's ALSO covered in a separate thread)
XDA is an amazing resource, with some incredibly talented people. All I can say to other noobs is to be patient, thorough, and to READ READ READ.
The answers are there, you just need to calm down and LOOK. Don't try SH*T until you're confident you know what you're doing. (Excuse my language)
I LOVE XDA-dev!!
Very Impressive.
Great !
This is a great forum for ANYONE to learn about their devices and see how much they can push to do the things that the devices can do.
I think right out of the box, these devices are kinda limited in their potential. The great guys here in this site make it better and help these devices achive higher grounds.
I am very glad that you had a great experience. I have been this forum for a little over a year and always had great help and experience.
I'm also glad to see someone actually knows how to READ!!
Even though I've had my Wizard for almost 10 months now, xda was one of the FIRST sites I bookmarked after getting it. Even though I registered right away, I read threads for several weeks before ever posting anything.
I had CID and SIM unlocked and flashed to two of Summiter's ROMs within the first 6 weeks I had my phone. That was all it took to become addicted. If I'm not on here reading every day, I go into "information withdrawal".
I'll never be at the level some of these gurus are at, but I'm learning some of the "how-to's" little by little -- and, expanding my knowledge of how to do things that I wouldn't have DREAMED of doing with this phone a year ago.
I'll admit it -- I'm HOOKED!!
Congrats on picking up the information so quickly. I'll have to echo what's already been said here about a GREAT first post by a NOOB!!
Im glad that some newbie's are able use the info here and in the immortal words of the crystal method "there is hope"
We must all give credit to all those ROM cooks for all there hard work and diligence and to the other members that have made it so simple to understand and learn through there trials and errors.

Sorry, I have to totally dissagree with all the praise you are getting.
How can anyone know that thier new device is not 'going to be what they wanted' in less than a day? You will have no base line to measure changes against.
I believe everyone should be made to use their new device for a month, dead standard! I can't help singgering, laughing and shaking my head in disbelief when I read about people complaining that they have to reset 4-5 times a day, that their device freezes, crashes, conflicts, or things don't work, etc, etc. Then they abuse HTC, MS and anyone else they can think of - some people curse and abuse their device, describing it as crap and shouldn't be sold like this.... then they tell you all the changes and mods they have made, and the rubbish they have installed and.... WHAT DO YOU EXPECT!!!!
My Hermes is dead standard and runs like a dream - constantly impressed by it.
I have no quams about people wanting to mod, develop, experiment, etc. but please use your device in original config for long enough to know if you are making improvements or making a mess.
IMHO anyway.
Welcome!
Since a longer time I'm reading the forum and thanks to you guys I learned a lot about my Wizard. I know now how to unlock and "unsimlock" my phone, how to flash it and many many more.
Before I will ask a question I'm reading and searching a forum to find that what I need, that's way until now I didn't post anything, so I want just to say hello to all members.
People gatherd here are very talented and helpfull people.
Best regards.

If you buy a truck for off-roading and find out the first day that it doesn't have 4 wheel drive, should you continue to drive it for 30 days to see if it will magically appear?
Congrats for researching, mate... I dunno if anyone else feels this way, but there seems to have been an influx of semi-retarded users posting recently saying things like "why won't my Sony Ericsson P990 flash???"... ok it's a bit of an exaggeration, but they're still bloody dum questions!
Like you when I found this site, I spent at least 2 days researching before I even tried to modify anything and everything I searched for came up with appropriate answers... in DEPTH! And the pay-off was quick and painless as a result... my universal now works - full stop. With the O2 ROM, it was a bag of poo compared to what it was made for, and I say that after 8 months or so of usage with original ROM.
I will be pointing resident idiots to this thread too from now on. Many thanks for your intelligence, it's what contributes to this site being as great as it is
Geez. this is the first time I've seen this post. That was like the XDA Developers Hall of Fame at the beginning. Anyway, congrats to the original poster and all who learned the right way. Mods can we re-title this thread "The Perfect Newbie" and make it a sticky to replace some of the outdated ones?
To be or not to be Noob ........
There are loads skulkers like myself that have never bothered to post.
I bow to the superior knowledge of the Windows Mobile gods and keep my trap shut until I have learned / read enough to say something intelligent on the topic.
Most things are clearly labled and easy to find.
Some of the useless post just add clutter and makes it difficult to find the truely useful info.
There will always be impatient PFY's and noob's that can't be bothered to search.
Search + Google is your friend.
When I get online I'm always going to two websites first. That is, Myspace and XDA Developers. And after I explore those two sites, I never remember what other sites to visit.
But when I'm here, I exaust almost every forum like several times looking for something new or something to talk about. I get tired as I sign on here several times a day, looking at the same crap every time, just hoping there's a new version of Slide2Unlock, PocketCM or just some new stable Wizard ROM. AND I LOVE IT!!!
I just want to express my concern and my OCD over this place. I am totally unsatisfied of this experience and ask that you may CONTINUE WHAT YOU GUYS ARE DOING!!! I LOVE YOU ALL!!!
See what I mean, I can't control myself.
Great... I'm back here again... I need Xanax...
I am extermely addicted... I LOVE THIS SITE! I'm going to participate as much as possible.
Yep same here, ever since I bought my artemis and discovered this site I need to check daily the artemis threads just to see whether something great has come out. Ho,
I am reading and getting more intrigued re flashing my TyTnII with a suitable ROM, after my holidy in July of couse as I really need it for that.
But can someone explain how a cooked ROM is able to out perform a stock one?
I dont get it? Take GPS for example. I read that it is the radio driver tha deals with this?
So how come a huge organisation like HTC puts a radio on the device and then someone off their own back is able to do something with the driver to make it more effiecient?
Or am I totally discombobulated and talking gaa gaa?

Well for one the software on Cooked ROMs is different. All the "Bloatware" is removed and some useful applications are cooked in.
As for radios there are many variaties (some ported from other devices) that perform better on different networks and different locations.
The radios arn't made by chefs, there just taken from different ROM's. I.e. some from the newest ATT Tilt, some from the Vodafone 6.1 ROM etc. etc.

HTC is a company with primary objective: making money
if you were HTC's owner, and assuming you want more and more money, would you release a product that is so perfect that nobody will never consider buying your next updated newer products? on the other hand, to attract customers to your current product you need to have amazing specifications listed in your marketing brochures (i.e. hardware features) which unfortunately can ONLY work with better "ingridients" of ROM (did somebody mention cooked ROMs ?)
ps: btw how old are you?

Further to this, HTC "forgot" the drivers for the hardware graphics acceleration for the MSM chipset. There not all that good.
Dave (BTW if you want my age you'll have to find it )
couple things you can do. You can flash a radio and you can flash a cooked rom. Different radios can give you different reception, and even faster GPS lock. You will have to experiment on which one works best, as long as the radio is compatible with the rom. A cooked rom has a lot of programs stripped out from OEM which makes the rom a lot faster than the OEM.
Excellent chaps, I am more inclined to have a go!
Mmm how old am I?
Well let's see beleive it or not I am a programmer for a large organisation but know jack about all this stuff in the same way I know jack about web creation or networks. But I do know about programming database applications and in my time have written a few nice graphics programs.
Now here's the thing....can you guess my age?
Have worked here for 25 years and worked my way up the ranks, been married for 22 years and have a 21 year old son.......
BTW why do you want to know how old I am?

How do cooked roms differ?
Well, to be honest, it's more about "usability / feel / look " than any other thing.
Original/Official roms are generally having an appalling feel and look. For example, take my network provider (Orange in UK). I had read a lot about TyTN_II (aka Tilt/Kaiser...etc.) before getting my own from Orange. The moment I unpacked the device and turned it on , I was completely disappointed. Orange engineers spend a lot of time "customizing" (i.e. ruining) the feel and look of the device so that it looks more Orange-ish.
Their fossil tech people bag their regular salary every month and are light years behind the current time. They have no desire/motivation to be innovative (that's why they do not realse a software update even every two years).
I received my SPVM3100 (aka TyTN) from Orange almost 3 years ago. Two and a half years later, when I received TyTN_II , I was shocked to see that they had loaded exactly the same bloatware and disgusting theme they had used on older HTC devices years ago.
xda rom developers are up-to-date; they are brilliant individuals who develop software out of their personal passion and love of technology. They know what is exactly going on in PDA community at this very moment. They listen to users' experiences in real life every day and they strive to make things look better, more practical and faster.
With an original/official rom you're stuck with what the HTC (or Orange, AT&T, Vodafone ...) developers put in your device ages ago. With cooked roms (depending on your actual use of the device) you have a variety of options to choose from.
And most important of all, you'll join the forum, get addicted to it, learn loads of new tweaks and work-arounds, and will see surprising new customized software almost every week.
Believe me, stay tuned in here and soon you'll notice that not only you're holding a completely different device in your hand, but also YOU will be a completely new user of the device ; a user more in command of the HTC you're carrying around
Welcome
Kooooooooooooool
I bought my TyTnII for £434 unlocked.
It has an Ornage sim card plus all the stuff I have loaed myself:
SBP Pocket Plus, Weather, Time etc and loads of German learning programs, speech and the like.
When I first came to this site I was put off as I did not fully grasp what it was all about, but that's me all over....should read the manual first
I really like the idea of flashing and getting rid of the bloatware as you call it and see how my device works afterwards.
But as I paid £434 for it if I brick it my wife will use said brick to remove my ability to father any heirs!!!!!
Yoinks!

Well, if you do have an issue, "Brick", there are a few people around that can revive you. If ever in need search around, there's a guy that has revived a plethora of dead kaisers, but I can't remember his name at the moment.
Anyway, as this really is not development related, I'm gonna move it to the general section.
Welcome to XDA.

Why did u Join XDa-Dev. I Joined Xda-Dev because i needed help with my imate sp3 it was water damaged i forgot it my trouser and my mother put them in da washing machine anyway i never got it fixed but since then i vist this site everyday. if xda-Dev did not exist i think windows mobile devices will be like a day without sunlight thats why i vist this site at least once or twice a day n datz my reason for joining and staying on xda-Dev
I wanted to look smart
I've posted this before... I wanted to look smart at the at&t forums. I would see questions posted, then come here to find the answer. Then go back and post the answer there. I 'think' I had quite a few people fooled.
Well...I was googling for ways to make my Samsung i760 better, when I had it of course, and stumbled acrossed another forum that discussed the top apps to have on a PPC. S2U2 was on the list, alot, I then came here and couldn't leave!! So, thanks A_C!!
I was a motorola modder from way back, and I wont settle for "stock" when it comes to my phones... I got an S620 and needed to mod it.
Honestly, I don't even remember.
i came searching here when i was upgrading my Hima and the power to my laptop suddenly stoped..it stucked in Bootloader for about 3 months..then i found the solution ( which was veryyyy simple )..and now..i cant move my self from the monitor and xda

because there were good, wise people here mostly, and good rare soft... been a days..
now it is one big mess + some good info.
just almost ordinary phone/ihpone/trendy diamond forum.
this place lacks subforums for EVERY os-modable PPc/pppc devices.
htc, htc, where are subfora's for devices like hp4700(and other ones), asus, etc....
maybe it is time to think wider?
I was looking for some software and google brought me here.....since then, I almost daily visit this site and enjoy reading rather than writing.....
recomendation from friends
when my prophet got broken then my friends told me tyo visit XDA forum since then everyday visiting .
very happy to know this forum.
thanks to all.
Excuse my french (no offense if your french) , but I joined this website because it is the best god damn htc website on the net. Although there are a lot of smart asses on here.

I joined for the huge amount of content already on here and the large number of very knowledgeable people able to help me with my problems.
I joined because i just bought a Kaiser and wanted the best site for info about it, and what it can do ect
well, i was searching the internet for new interfaces for my P4350 phone, when i found this site.
Now, i'm reading the forums every day, looking for new developments, themes, etc
I really like the site, and the people who develop / modify software are really doing good work.
Greetings, Chris
I forget why i joined but it was probably for some stupid reason like i needed help or something.
but i think i might have been the one that seeded the "touchflo minus cube" idea
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=333240
probably not. Hopefully yes
My ppc was bloated & ran like cr#p with the OE official rom. So, I discovered this site has some great chefs prepairing excellent rom menu's in the kitchen!
Now my ppc is lean & mean!
i dont remember perfectly...but i think i just found the forum one day, registered, and thought to myself "I may use this later" and then i never went on for a long time, then finally there was wm6 being developed for the sp5, so i started going on. Since then ive stayed around now that i knew this forum was for developing and hacking.
a long time ago.. i was looking for something new... then i saw something new.. Windows mobile 6 Beta releases?... ohh. i should find them.. and Bingo.. i found here a ROM of WM6.. i decided to flash it.. but holy crap.. i f**cked up my wizard.. i was really sad.. and.. then.. i started to find how to fix it.. ..
since then im a member in xda-dev..
with my wizard...
my universal..
and now my kaiser..
(and coming soon my Touch Pro)
I joined because i wanted to learn about smartphones and this is before i had one.
Hi
a friend recommended I look at this site. But to be honest, I am not too up with how these ROMs work!
All I want is some updates for my X1 and some applications that are more user friendly, particularly SMS, and basically to make my phone more fun to use.
If anyone can point me to one download that will be effective I would be most grateful, as I'm not technically minded at all!
Thanks
Steve
ROMs are a complete replacement of the operating system on your device, and necessarily involves a complete reset of your data. Not for the faint of heart!
If you're just after apps, check out this forum http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=498
Good luck! I'm sure you'll find some great stuff to transform your X1. You certainly want to get the SPB mobile shell from the SE Korea site, and read the tips to get it working (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=541280).
You're in the right place!
All I can tell you is you're in the right place... I was just in your shoes just a few months ago..
1st) I just wanted more panels http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=498934
Then I wanted more and wanted to experience the new look and feel of windows mobile 6.5. So I realized I had to back up my data first and any third party apps I had on my device -
2nd) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=299705
3rd) I had to hard-spl because it seems to be mandatory prior to using one of the custom roms (read carefully, take your time)-> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=431218
4th) I tried a lot of the custom roms available and believe me there's about 4 to 6 that I toggle between everytime they release because they introduce some of the new apps , features,etc.. One I'm using now is here..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=542664
Read up as much as you can about ROM's and the like, I know you don't want to get too 'into' all this stuff - but really custom ROMs make the x1 much, much easier and nicer to use. You don't have to be all that tech savy either.
Also, welcome to XDA....its a ton of info, on here. but dont worry you will get the hang of it, and ask as many questions as you need to..the folks on here are very helpful, but with so many request, they get bogged down a bit
so research first, then ask questions, then research some more while you wait for an answer...
welcome to xda!
Here's just a few things to inform you about to break you in a bit to the modding for your x1.
1.This is the topic you read if you ever wanted to mod your ROM or restore to your original ROM
2. here's a topic that has some good applications to help your phone run more smoothly and also more fun. highly recommand xperiatweak2( very very useful program to help get rid of some annoying things in the x1. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=441439
3. Be nice to your battery and also about the number of times you do softresets (you can read up on what soft and hard resets are on the forum), because it could cause your phone to stop working. which something I experienced painful for myself!!! now I have to send my phone back to sony ericsson to get my phone fixed and also get a new battery beacuse it died on me.
4. In reply to carlonalls about hardspl on x1. it is mandatory in order to any type of ROM modification or repairs to be done
5. save all your important things in your memory card before you do any type of modifications to your phone.
6. I highly recommand you to get google maps if you want a free gps map to use when your out (although not totally safe to use unless you have a x1 car holder because it can get distracting). if you'd be willing to pay the extra money, then get either TOMTOM or Garmin Mobile XT (which both are quite good).
So, I hope you have a good time with your x1 and also on this forum. This forum do have a lot of nice people who are quite encouraging and willing to help. I for one have experience the goodness of certain members that are here.
