Man, I really don't FEEL like I'm 36-40, and I sure don't act like it, but there it is...
already interesting. Although 18 replies for now, already you see that this XDA product is used by young people and not the 'Managers of the world'..
I think this poll is more likely to show that younger thinkers will be attracted to a forum such as this, more than the profile of actual users. I guess I am a manager in this world, though I'm also a hands-on person too. I'm in the technology business because I love technology, and I love making my life easier and more interesting through the application of technology. The XDA is one of those things that has delivered business value for me AND is a fun thing to have. I look for excuses to mess with it and experiment, which is why I am here.

I've heard. In my part of the US, we get what we call "snowbirds" for the cooler months. They are old people who should not be driving any more who come down for our warm desert climate. They drive huge vehicles with no competence and no eyesight. Fun on a bike.
im only just 17 i picked up my xda for a bargain on ebay £190 exellent cond was dropped and one corner has a dent in (near the ir lens) but it works fine come with everything not even used  i wanted a 7650 but i seen this for £190 so i got it ive had it for about 4 months now still going nice and good. I like it because it is like a pc and the games are brill and also i wanted mp3 lol
36 so I must be mature....
but also on two wheels. Some say it's immature but I didn't have the money for a bike when I was younger and I will never lose interest in technology and gadgets.
I have one example that this will stay that way. My mother in law (haha you say LOL). She is much older but is very interested in PC's and technology and recently started with some serious digital photography.
hmmmm, two paragraphs already and I still haven't convinced myself that getting older is no problem
I'm 18. I'm in the US and bought the XDA as a reward for myself after working full time all summer as a computer programmer for the local telco (BellSouth).

i have a Piaggio X9 500se - its a scooter. i know it isn't a true motor-cycle but due to past accidents on 'bikes my ability to change gear is limited - or should i say non-existent. so it's a scooter for me, although it looks like a motor-bike.

How the hell do these people manage to afford this.. I got unlucky, lost my old phone, insurance paid out. Then got the XDA. Being unlucky made me lucky as well.
It was a Siemens ME45 that I lost. A very very good phone. Should be getting the S55 in a few days. Stupid name, but damn good phones in my experience.
I've had Siemens C45i, ME45, SX56 (XDA). And getting a S55 with camera soon hopefully...

Ironic is it...I'm as geeky as a girl can get, and I have the hardest time finding a guy! The vast majority of you just aren't interested in a girl that is smart, makes a good living, would rather spend the day playing with an XBox than going shopping... but isn't drop-dead gorgeous with a sexy, hot body. I seem to generally attract the loser types that are 40 and still living with their parents.

Sad, huh? I work as a freelance programmer (have a popular ecommerce software package that I sell and support), set up my own home network, do a lot of beta testing and reviewing for other people, and so on. Like a fair number of geeks though, I didn't have great social skills growing up, didn't really fit in with girls my age. So always feel like I'm playing catch-up now.
Geez, this wasn't a topic I really expected to get into on here!
Ive recently started to develop a case of yellow fever. That seems to be your best bet if you are looking for nerdy and cute girl. However its a matter of taste, not everyone is into that.
As with all stereotypes, its not true 100% of the time, but its it has been for me so far.
A lot of us geeks got our first real social skills from forums like these.... that's not entirely a good thing, either. lol

You know, that's very true in my case. I've been networking online since the earliest days of the web and even before that on BBS's (anyone remember those?!) I was much more introverted and shy then, these days I am far more confident and articulate in large part due to all the years of throwing myself into the middle of discussions online. And yeah, it's a catch-22 for sure. I do think some guys are intimidated by me, not so much even that I am brainy, but because I do have opinions of my own and will argue for them. Not to the point of being argumentative by any means, and in a real fight I will almost always back down first...but I know I've thrown some guys off because they will make some statement about something political or such, and I'll just come right out with "Oh, I don't agree with that at all." For all that men will talk about wanting someone who is witty and intelligent, etc. I often find that they aren't sure how to handle it when they get it.
To quote my avatar....

dayum homie, if i read what you said correctly, that was wrong yo!
Having had a 7290 for awhile, my girlfriend has always been jealous of me and what my phone thus far has been capable of, streaming video, gps, kitchens and custom roms and just the overall customization factor of my Titan. Having grown tired of her 7290 she called Rogers and *****ed, heck i even helped her ***** but little was i expecting Rogers of all networks to give her the new BB Curve for free.
I admit I haven't really versed myself about blackberries and when the agent we spoke to offered her an 8310 I had sneer on my face thinking here we go again, another blue brick for her. Imagine my surprise when we got to the dealer and I saw her new phone.
THIS THING IS SEXY AND FUNCTIONAL!! Wow RIM these days is really bringing the heat in terms of design. Hell I'm spending more time on her phone these days than on mine (not that i would trade)
See how the roles have reversed now?
Now the burning question I pose to you is.... WOULD YOU TRADE YOUR HTC PHONE FOR ONE OF THESE?!?
I would not trade my 8525 and soon to be Tilt in for a Blackberry for one reason: How does it out perform and do what mine does better? Enough said....

Yeah I agree but I gotta give RIM credit on having a far more stable OS than windows mobile
edit: here are interesting *ahem* incendiary articles i came across
http://www.laptopmag.com/Features/BlackBerry-vs-Windows-Mobile-6.htm
http://www.vaked.com/blackberry-curve-vs-att-tilt/
Blackberry is far more stable because it has far less software to screw it up. Not much 3rd party stuff to customize.

Which is exactly why apple is "more stable" than pc platform. They restrict the hardware to about 3 options and then lock down what you can run on it (granted not so much on the software side but it is still limited).
Temptation too much
Looks like the temptation was too much for me to bear, I went ahead and took the plunge, bought myself a curve this past friday. Had my girlfriend looking at me like.... WTF?!? My excuse was 'No one does email better than blackberry baby plus now u can email me with no delay' don't know if it worked.
Still using my Titan for everyday use (can't give it up), my blackberry is strictly for email, makes me wonder if I'm slowly turning into a blackberry convert...crackberry anyone?

Ha! I do admit the Blackburry Curve is a sexy looking device compared to my M3100 (ugli!) and is very tempting to go and get it....
Its the sort of phone that says "look at me im american and luvin it!"
But as posted before.... its the lack of 3rd party support...
I couldnt live without my S2P as it is the music player that still gives the wow factor
but mite go and do what origins81 did and have it on contract....
I personally would not trade my Prophet for a Blackberry because I love the fact I can cook ROMs, flash stuff and install things that will never work on Blackberrys. My Prophet in combination with an exchange server also does all the email i need.
A small point though. Doesn't this thread go against:

I moved over to a Kaiser after having a Blackberry 8800. I like the WM based Device Better. More Options all around. But I'm a guy who likes options.
I honestly think you should kick your HTC to the curb and stick to the blackberry...yeah you can do a lot with your HTC, but it gets boring after a while..and it makes your phone run so slow..thats why you have a desktop...you keep your phone strictly for calls and emails and messaging..the rest..keep it on your computer!! Blackberries are so much more reliable, nicer, functional, accessible. least but most important...HTC'S SUUUUUUUCK!!!!

Though I may not agree with what you say, and I would fight to the death to protect your right to say it. I must admit, you probably shouldn't have said that.
Do you have the right to express your feelings? Yes. But, do you have to do so In an obviously inflammatory manner? NO!
You don't walk through a tiger cage wearing a Raw Meat Suit. Its just not smart. If you don't like your HTC, leave here and never look back. The people here, hence the name, are Developers. We like to build and make our phone work beyond what some people can imagine.
The more I think about it. Given this is your only post, I think you are a Troll. Go back to your bridge and leave us people who enjoy working on an "open" expandable platform alone. I've used a Blackberry, and its an ok phone. But I love my HTC so much better. If you have the belief that a phone should be a phone and you have your desktop for computing, Then you are not the target market OF the HTC product.
Thank you for stopping by. However, your kind are not welcome here.
@candymandysandy:
Given this is your first post....bad call my friend!! The equivalent of that is me posting BLACKBERRIES SUCK A**!! @ crackberry.com.
Those guys would track down me by my IP address, literally tear me apart, take pictures then PIN each other and don't expect less here.
It's an unspoken rule, you'll (trap) make more friends (flies) with honey than with vinegar
*edit* I'm lovin my curve tho
I like my blackberry
I have 2 Blackberry Curve 8310 and love em...they just look cool and as far as 3rd party software I have google maps and other google software on it and it works great. The only thing thjat bugs me is I cant find anyone that knows how to unlock these phones for free. Other than that iots great. But on the other hand what do I know I'm used to flip phones. LOL
No way to trade my Uni
These fruity phones are so irritating... blackberry... apple iphones... strawberry... blueberry... crackberry.... expensive useless fruits... everytime i saw one, i directly want to eat one
Here, in Indonesia, where image is almost number one thing for average humans, blackberry users has jumped from small hardcore-based fan, into million of users starting from early this year. Those people who want to stay-connected, 24/7 nagged and disturbable, with mails and messengers, which consider these features as plus beside the "image" they buy. Yeah, image, because even the lesser one (Curve) cost almost $500 here.
And when iPhone did launch their fruit here, even in $800 so-called "subsidized" tag (heck, subsidized at this price??), thousands get in-line to indent one.
Geez, my poor fellow countrymen. Being sucked high and dry..... by fruits!!!
So annnoying... why? I don't know with BB users in other country, but in this country, these fruits has turned million into autistic human zombie... they carry it everywhere, stich it everytime to their palm, in the toilets, while driving, in social gathering... Very annoying when you have 5 friends gathered around, but 4 of them are busy with their own fruits almost everytime....!!! Every seconds passed with the notorious "ding".. "dong".. and prompt texting to reply.... ARRGGHHHH!!!

One word, Symbian,
Had a Blackberry Pearl before my Tilt, if you think HTC/M$ are always one step behind, try RIM. I had that phone for 2 years with not one update, much less an OS revamp.
Nice one Mike! I like those blackberry curves!
And no, I would never go to a blackberry. Every time I visit my mother she always wants to play with my phone because her blackberry is so blah. Its just not for me man! Why would you want something you cant brick and bring back to life every week?
Last weekend, while i was at a batchelors party my roomate found it funny to use my user name to create posts. This ended up in me being banned for 7 days and the vulgarity used was very disrespectful to me and this community. He is/was pissed of at me because he hasnt chippd in on rent in about 2 1/2 months so i told him last friday he needed to move. So as i was at the party he used my user name (because cookies enabled im always logged in) and created a new user name using a diffrent broswer. I hope you members can accept my apologie, as im deeply sorry. This was extremely embarrasing to me. And now i have kicked this mother out of my home. again i am deeply sorry for the actions last weekend, and once again i hope you all can forgive the situation. As I previously stated in those threads, I didn't think that was you anyway. Just seemed really out of character to me. Almost child like I thought. Dude!! I was in the same exact situation. I kicked this one guy out, not because of rent, but because of disrespect. He would bring his gf at night and you know what when I was trying to get sleep. I gave the guy consideration to have the place to himself for a few hours. What I did was told him to watch a movie with him and his girlfriend as well as me adn my girlfriend. The movie was called You Me and Dupree (if I got it right) He got the point I was trying to make and at the end of the movie we got in an argument. I won. Yay!
Is it too soon to laugh at this? (Or am I just a bit twisted?).

True story : I picked up a load of colored painted lumber in Atlanta and dropped it off in Lancaster, pa. We started talking about technology and they didn't desire to have a cellphone or any phone for that matter. They seemed so much at peace with just the basics in life. Clearly they live in a area with malls but still appreciated life in a simple form. Now its 2011 and most folks can't go a day without cellphone use, and have a piss fit if they cell is about to die while at the mall. We stand in long lines waiting for the new it phone then rush home to make an unboxing video as others tune to watch us in awe to remove the plastic off a device. We call up the carriers begging for an update to get a new device.. log in to sites like this and complain about the device and while asking developers to stop spending time with your family and hurry up on that root so i can do a whole bunch of nothing with my phone. I'm not saying cellphones are bad, if your wife ran out to pick up pizza and got a flat you definitely want her to have one in that situation. I'm talking bout being apart of the gimmick crowd...

I'm happy to be there. My firm belief is that technology will produce the paradise we all want. Unlike some conservative types, I don't adhere to the rule of suffering in life all the time. They think the only good person is one who is 24/7/365 suffering and doing without. We make technology to overcome the environment, not to continue to suffer in it. The only reason there is any form of suffering in the world is because technology hasn't developed to the point of addressing all of the needs. As long as a person holds onto their ethical and moral integrity, suffering is needless.
Don't like this idea. Some people always say that these are just devices that call and text, everything else is excess and we don't need it in our daily lives. Like we should be grateful we have them. But this is called progress. At one time, we didn't have cars or color tv or this latest gadget. And we have adjusted our lives accordingly so that they are essentials in day to day living. It's foolish to just live in the past or sit still, the world moves at a fast pace. If we didn't feel a need for more, innovation would just stop. They don't even call cell phones "cell phones" anymore, they call them mobiles because that's what they are. Mobile devices
Yes, I agree with you geeksquadryder. As we are forgetting what a real life is? We need mobiles for doing our daily work but some people getting mobiles for not satisfying must needs but for fun. We know how much impact these mobiles can have in our life in helping and ruining. So, its upto the head of the home to teach or drive his/her home to be happy with/without things of needed.
Our biggest mistake was coming down from the trees in the first place. Everything since then is just compounded error. Too late to go back now!

people are constantly saying how technology has made ungrateful and ruined lives. I don't see how wanting the most out of your phone can ruin your life. This is called evolution/progress. I'm glad we have cell phones and I'm glad technology is getting better and I hope one day I won't have to lift a finger to do many of the tedious tasks I do on a day to day basis.

If we just stick to "need" when we live life, we'd be a very poor society. Much of the art and technology we have today have made it so far for want of innovation and pleasure. And yes, also for pure fun.
It's not excessive, it's creative, new, interesting and in this way, important. Especially since we came down from the trees...

Yup. Now we are describing quantum physics with languages initially designed to tell the other monkey where the fruit was.
yeah, and let's just revert back to farming for every one right...
i'll use whatever tech i want, you can go be a luddite.

That would be 1970's tech to the Amish.
By the way, anyone know what an Amish guy's arm up a horse's butt is? A mechanic.

I do often think the Amish and others of that ilk have the right idea. It may be luddism but as a society i bet they are generally happier than the rest of the world at large.

Sorry to tell you but technology is important. I always remember the economics of technology, where tech has the potential of drastically changing supply, demand or both.
It increases the quality of life, and frees us to do things that are more important, like putting funny captions on pictures of cats instead of adding up a few thousand lines of labour costs.
You read HHGTTG, there was one book where people used leaves as currency...
p/s: I stole that initial quote from Pratchett.

As i said earlier, it's too late to go back now. I disagree that technology improves lives though. More people die because of technology than are saved by it. You have to remember that as a race we have stopped evolving; instead our tools are evolving. Rather than changing to adapt to our environment we are trying to change our environment to adapt to us. This is not a good thing.

Wow, I could berate you over that. But I won't. The reason I want to is because THAT is a main part of the conservative/religious ideal. It's ignorant because they believe they...embodied in their gray matter...have all understanding and knowledge of the universe and existence. Because of this, they push hardship and suffering on society as something good for us.
These pea-brained idiots never consider they do not know everything. They have a thought, and because *they* have that thought, it has to be correct and righteous. So therefor they proceed to prevent society from having peace and they thwart all technological progress as much they can and call it evil. They are the kind that believes only someone who is constantly suffering is a better person. And they do that to people.
They see one aspect of something and conclude that it leads to what they believe it should.
You'll have to pardon my intensity because here in America, that is exactly what happened to my life. My life was wiped out as though it was nothing to me by ideological/religious/conservative zealots. With an attitude of, "You'll thank me when you recover". The only problem is they had no clue how destructive their ideology was to me and it obliterated my life.
I'm a godless Atheist but this is not a religious discussion! I love technology but i admit that the cost far outweighs the benefits. The global gene pool is getting weaker by the day while we rape the planet that we rely on to survive.
Advancement is inevitable but so is entropy. Equilibrium will be returned but i guarantee it won't be in a way that's favourable to human life.

Amen, I mean, I agree to that (zing!).
Truth is, I believe that technology helped me a lot. I mean, Microsoft Excel is a million times better than an A3 piece of paper and a calculator.
But certain techs makes us dumber, and not smarter. We don't use it to expand ourselves and our capabilities, but to limit ourselves and reduce innovation and creativity.
Case in point; iPhone.

What war? The one where they killed everyone for staying in some place long ago, or the one where they kill everyone else for being someone else?
Wait, I got that mixed up, didn't I, it was the one where they killed people for being different, right?
p/s: religion talk is never ok, especially when it gets slightly out of hand. Note the understatement
Results announced. I did very, very poor. Actually the reason for this is, I am not at all interested in studying what I am. I am always like 'Not feeling to'. Currently in Uni, 2nd year. Thinking of dropping out, the same I thought when I was in 1st year but I gave that thought away thinking that its just a new place, I will get suited to it. But now I am fairly sure, that trying to do something which I am not interested in will not land me anywhere good.
Experienced people, please suggest should I drop out? Reason holding me back are, my 2 years will be wasted not to mention the money put in.

Cannot switch majors. Our uni doesn't give any option like that.
I might drag myself to the finish of the course or I might drop out. Lets see. Thanks for your opinion.
Sure thing good luck
That's impossible. School have to allow to let you switch majors, unless you live in commie cuba or something. Go back, take easy classes for now, don't overwhelm yourself. My school kicked me out due to low grades. I'm starting a different school in 2 weeks, and I will have to waste 1.5 hours on the subway one way, but I need to get my GPA up so then I can write an appeals to my old school. So just go back, and take classes that won't be too hard to understand.

Universities in the UK are run differently to the US.
I was at uni in the mid 90s and after a car accident in my first year, went back to start again.
About this time of year, a housemate came home high on drugs and attacked me, so I decided to leave uni, I wasn't enjoying it and back then with loans of only £1000 it was costing too much to live (not like students now with their generous loans).
I was unemployed for 2 weeks, had to pay Hampshire county council the small grant I had back.
However, times have changed, there were better employment prospects at the time, how are yours now?

What he said.
There's nothing worse than making a mistake that you can't take back. Especially one that could change your life forever. I'd stay the course and see if you can't work something out with your tutors to get on top of the situation.
One or two sucky years is better than forty or fifty!
this is a grim topic....
Let's say you already drop out of college, what would you do after that?

Find a minimum wage job?
Stick it out. There are ways to make it more fun. Lots of people think back to college as a time when things were more fun. Get laid / smoke a joint. Oh, and don't forget about cheating to get good grades. Join a study group or frat (ie something where everybody ia trying for good grades). They might also have some fun activities.

Well yes, a lot of people think like 'College is the best part of life' and all, but honestly, I never felt that way not even close to. Everyday I am like, oh another week, I have to go to college so that I can get minimum attendance required so that they allow to give the exams. I am never excited or looking forward to going to the classes, not even a single class and no wonder this will affect my result which I have just seen.
... ... ...
after discussion with a few people, I am thinking of continuing this course and get a side course, like correspondence in which you have to study at home and only go to give the exams.
what's your course?

I was in a similar position several years ago. I've just finished my 2nd year of uni and I've completely lost interest in studying. My poor grades led to me being suspended for a semester.
I seriously considered dropping out to pursue a career in IT via A+ Certification. Anyway, after several long discussions with my family, I decided put my head down and graduate from uni first before making any further career decisions.
It was the best decision I ever made. I became a more mature and disciplined person through the experience. And I'm able to use it my advantage during job interviews. I'm able to say things like:
"I don't give up easily when faced with hardships. I hit a snag in the road during university but I'm able to push through it with my determination. My immaturity early-on cost me dearly in terms of average GPA. But if you just look at my grades over my last several semesters, those high marks represent my growth and my true potential."
If you drop out now, it would be hard to answer the inevitable interview question: "I see here on your CV that you've attended so-and-so university for 2 years. What happened there?"

I went to engineering college studied electronics.
Passed a AVR & PIC exam.
Then got bored with my classes and dropped out after 2 years.
I went to look for a job... no luck anywhere.
Then wrote comptia +A exam.
Still no luck.
Passed N+
BAM finally got a position that i could live off of.
It's been a hard climb due to my age.
Time is limited.. go now.
Finish thy classes.
For thou shalt have time to peruse other things without the waste.
