MP4 files: Can record & play on PPC, not on PC

On my Kaiser I took some movies. They were in .MP4 format. I copied the files to my PC and when trying to play them on the PC (by double-clicking on the file in the windows explorer) - I get this error message in a dialog box:
Title: Error
Text: Error -2041: an invalid sample description was found in the movie (VIDEO_011.MP4)
When I try to open the file in the latest updated version of Windows Media Player 11, I get an error message saying it cannot play this sort of file. I do have MP4 codecs on my PC as well.
Lastly, when I copy the files back onto my PPC and then open the camera application, I am still able to open and play the files with no problem on the Kaiser.... so there is nothing wrong with the files... so what the heck?!?! HALP!

try quicktime it does a good job with mp4 files

Perhaps you could try googling 'K Lite Media pack'. This is highly recommended by many, and it works great for me. It plays so many different file types, such as flv files (say if you downloaded a youtube video and wanted to play it straight away) and I'm pretty certain, MP4 files too. The player you play videos with is called 'Media Player Classic'.

I even upgraded to Windows Vista (via download) to try to get this to work. I figured waiting long enough after it first comes out (it's been one YEAR), they would have ironed out all the bugs. Also figured since Vista SP1 was about to come out I could stumble along with whatever my issues were until it was released in case I still had problems...
I am more gutsy than most to do things like this with my PC because I automated a backup of only files that have changed, the first time I turn on my PC each day, to an external drive which I can just grab and run with in case my home ever catches on fire, etc. Runs in the background and only takes about 10 minutes, that has saved my butt more than once...
I specified only upgrade rather than a fresh install, so none of my programs or data would be lost:
1. All my data was lost anyway !!!!! Thank goodness for the backups!
2. All my browser favorites were blown away !!!! Thank goodness for the backups!
3. Almost everything also worked except for several drivers that I had to go to the vendor's website to download an upgrade. Good thing I am not using any hardware from vendors that have gone out of business. (I had to replace an old leading-edge technology $2,000 flat panel monitor because of that once.)

K Lite Mega Codec Pac
What "K Lite Mega Codec Pac" do to your PC? Is it removeable? Does it overwrite other codecs you might have? Does it come with a program for managing your codec settings and what is in use vs. not in use, or what?

i would advise against using k-lite codec pack, if you really want a good codec pack,try cccp.
however, if all you wanna do is just watch the mp4 files, i suggest that you just use vlc, linky

well, cccp is technically not a codec pack......its a filter pack, and has quite a few endorsements, its definitely the way to go if u need to play multiple video formats. the problem with most codec packs is there's high chances of damaging ur system if you dont know what you are installing. you may end up having multiple codecs for one video format. most ppl would tell you to avoid using any codec pack because the problems it would cause, i used to think the same, until i discovered cccp, seriously excellent when it comes to mkv playback.
however, like i said, if you're worried so much about codecs being installed on your system, just go ahead and use vlc, its a standalone player with its own decoders, doesnt install any codecs to your system watsoever.

video playback on PC-No sound?

I use vlc media player to playback recorded videos on my pc, and all the videos of my son have no sound. This happened on the kaizer too and it was due to a copyright issue w/ the codecs htc use.
Has anyone found a work around for this?

How incredibly stupid of HTC?

I think it's a licencing issue with VLC itself - it can't play the SAMR AMR audio codec. I discovered this accidentally after emailing a vid to the missus who discovered she couldn't play it on her Macbook (using VLC). One of the threads I read about it is here.
I use mediaplayer classic and the K-Lite codec pack from free-codecs.com on my (windows-based) laptop and have no issues at all.

so you must have some codec able to play this... have you tried opening Diamond-Vids with other applications like vlc or maybe a conversion tool (like if one would like to convert to an flv for upping to web).
Also in your K-Lite there is a GSpot could you check what it shows in 'Audio' (check screenie)

ive been trying ot find a codec to get videos to work too.... well, video works but theres no sound on video files recorded with the diamond... ill give the klite pack a try i guess

I have tried out every player under the sun (yes vlc too), updated several different codec packs, and still have the same problem.
I know that there is sound encoded in the files, because when I play them on the phone there is sound.
I have a friend with the same phone, and he also has the same problem.
I have recorded several lectures, and it would be fantastic is someone can find a fix for this.. my intention was never to watch the videos on the phone.. otherwise i'll just end up cross-eyed.
Any help much appreciated.

If they are DRMed, you'll have to search on how to un-DRM them (I wouldn't ask about that here though). If they are not DRMed, you can play them in Windows Media Player.

I know about the DRM thing, but last time I checked, Windows Media does not play mp4. Am I wrong?

With regard to audio files from iTunes (m4a/AAC/mp4 or whatever you want to call them), they will play just fine via the music player interface in Touch Flo 3d. The only problem I've encountered is that for some reason the audio manager will not sort songs in track order. As yet I have not found a fix for this (and no one else seems to be asking about it either). Still, at least I didn't have to convert my iTunes library into MP3 files ; )
Purchased tracks will not play (in fact they will not even be visible).

Digital Rights Management (DRM) is a coding/decoding algorithm mainly used by iTunes to protect the artist and to ensure that the artist gets money for his work since you as a consumer ay have purchased a song or album online. All your own CD's which you may have read-in (ripped) through iTunes will play without any problems.
DRM files, though they appear as MP4 files, cannot be played without the appropriate decoder (iTunes for example).
Ways and methods HOW to bypass this mechanism MUST NOT be discussed here in the forum, do a google research if you interested in.
BTW same issues may happen if you go from iPhone to iPhone or transfer files from PC to PC even if you backed up your iTunes license.
You may bear an Apple store a visit or call Apples cust. support they can provide you with a special key that you do not have to purchase all your songs again.

Track sorting seems to be a general problem of the TF3D player. If you for example have an album which contains two CDs the TF3D player is not able to sort it correctly. It's stupidly sorting:
Track 1 CD1
Track 1 CD2
Track 2 CD1
Track 2 CD2
[...]
Therefore I'm using Pocket Player instead.

Is there a way to launch Pocket Player from TF3D in place of the in-unit player?? I have been searching for an answer for a week here and found not a clue. Any help with this would be appreciated, otherwise I will just launch from programs as I am now doing, but it seems a waste to have a nice tab wasted!

No, I don't think so. Unfortunately the only think you can do is completely disabling the TF3D player by removing it with AdvancedConfig.

I wonder if it's possible to at least get the Audio Manager to play tracks according to file name. At least that way if tracks were numbered 01, 02 etc that would get around the problem of it not seeing the track number in the tag.
Trouble is I can't work out how to do this.... I've been rumaging in the registry under HKLM\software\HTC\AudioManager_Eng but there doesn't seem anything obvious to me. Maybe a key could be added? Anyone got any ideas?

How about mp4 video?
It took 20 minutes to load a video mp4 file onto my microsd card, but it's there. Windows Media Player won't recognize it. The video player app portion of the camera will actually play the file, but it takes several seconds to launch and is generally choppy after that. It's a shame, too, because the video quality is great ... it's just very choppy.
Is there Windows Mobile player out there somewhere that plays these mp4 files SMOOTHLY? I knew the Tilt had issues with the driver not playing video smoothly, but I didn't think it was a problem with the Fuze. Sure would like to watch some quality video in mp4 mode on my Fuze rather than my video ipod.

To talk of disabling software or this drm would be wrong. But Itunes itself posesses a way for you to back up your music. Its totally legit, and a common problem out there. (itunes not playing on winmo or other devices).
So if its a totally legit way of using the itunes program itself, to simply create a backup of your songs... why is it so horrible to discuss?
No one is suggesting hacking or disabling the drm, simply getting the music they paid for to work.

Touch pro TCPMP media player

I recently just bought a touch pro sprint phone. I installed .NetCF 3.5 and then installed Advanced Config. I proceded to change,Change file system cache to 8MB,Change file system filter cache to 131072,Change Glyph cache to 32KB. That was the only tweak I have done. Besides that I put google maps cab and torch button cab on there.
For the most part its pretty much stock the way it came. I was wondering about a different media player. I havnt used the media player that came on my phone much but everyone on the net claims it sucks and says TCPMP is best..is it? OR is there a better media player?? And is it worth changing to a new media layer?? If anyone has any tips let me know..I want to make this phone as cool as I can but there is a lot of apps I dont feel I need.

In as few words as possible, yes, it's better. TCPMP is capable of many more formats, for one thing. It has better playlist support, for another. Frankly, the HTC audio manager is a better music player than WMP, and I hate them both (I'm a staunch MortPlayer supporter for music playback). For video, I have tried many, but I've only been happy with TCPMP. I'm usually NOT a big fan of uni-task software, but MortPlayer and TCPMP are the total cream of the crop in music and video playback on portable devices. Their price only serves to make them more desirable.
One word of warning: if you start flashing home-cooked ROMs, and it seems almost everyone on XDA does, at some point, check to see if the cook has included it. Many who do not include TCPMP have jibed their ROM so much that it doesn't work with TCPMP, no matter what you try.

TCPMP is better than WMP on the Touch Pro, as it supports many more formats. It's what I use. I'm currently using NRG's EnergyRom 3.0 (I believe there's a CDMA version of it for you Sprint users), which has TCPMP included, along with latest versions of Google Maps, .NET CF, AdvConfig, and other utilities. I would definitely recommend flashing that badboy with a custom rom- you'll notice a huge difference.
Btw, don't listen to the over-blown performance claims of those touting CorePlayer- their QTV driver doesn't work worth a damn on our devices. I've tried it on my Fuze- trust me, it's not worth the money.

That’s not completely true. The best results will depend on which format you are trying to play. For example, WMV plays best on windows media player and AVI plays best on the Core player. Core player works great if you have the correct settings. You’re best “free” option is TCPMP.
Search for this version:TCPMP-0.72RC1-ARM-PPC-recomp-03.CAB

Tried them all and TCPMP has it's uses. If you are going to encode movies to watch on your device put them in m4v and TCPMP is pretty darn good.
When it comes to music playback though I will have to disagree with the above posts. I have tried them all as well and the absolute best in my opinion is Nitrogen. Simply awesome.

It's best for video. Music will be up to your preferences. I use WMP for Today Screen and Voice command integration

WMP and IE are considered system files. Good luck deleting them without crippling something. Just ignore them and/or delete the shortcuts from the programs menu.
As for the rest of the advice, if you don't know the difference between CDMA and GSM, and don't know which one your phone is, I would forget about flashing my phone, until I knew it like the back of my hand, if I were you, unless you want to turn your shiny, expensive phone into a shiny, expensive brick.
Hint: you have a CDMA phone, which means a ROM written for GSM will completely and irreversibly disable your phone.

Yeah, there's no deleting PIE or WMP (you can try, but you will fail, lol). You're going to have to cook your own rom, and figure out how to remove them without screwing a bunch of other things up. They still come in handy from time to time. I'm not sure how well ringtones work without wmp-I guess another media player can handle them. PIE is good for downloading off of rapidshare or other sites where there's a countdown. It's also good for logging into free wifi networks. The HTC Streaming Video works well with it, too.

It is a podcast video from Comedy Central. I did not encode it. It is MP4 and I might have renamed the .m4v extension to .mp4 (can't remember). the resolution is 600x400 (or so) with a decent bitrate.
TCPMP won't play it

Windows Media Player will play it
HTC Album will play it
TCPMP and Coreplayer are software-only renderers. WMP and HTC album use hardware acceleration built into the Qualcomm chipset.
It seems that only MP4 (m4v) formats have native h/w support on Raphael. I don't know if .wmv is also supported.
I also use TCPMP and Coreplayer (own it). Each has pluses and minuses.

I think you won't get any software work with new Real Player as the codec driver never release to Windows Media Platform so far, i heard is becoz due to the license agreement between Nokia and Real. Correct me if i m wrong, i also hope i can play rmvb file in my phone instead wasting money to buy a device just for doing this.

i found some files and reg from somewhere and got rmvb to run on my fuze, but it is really slow. Not sure if it's worth it. PM me your email and i could send you the files.
