Should I keep it or just send it back? - MDA III, XDA III, PDA2k, 9090 Software Upgrading

Hi there!
I've been using my XDAIIs for about 2 weeks now. It was a replacement for my XDAII and now I'm feeling a bit sick that I paid a lot of money to get this phone with all the problems it has (re: Bluetooth stack, sliding keyboard, quiet microphone, etc).
I suppose there are a few of you out there thinking the same thing as me! Are all these issues software based and will a later Firmware update fix our issues or are any of these issues hardware based and is it worth sending it back now while we still can?
If anyone with a more techinical view than mine can help me (and possibly others) make this decision or if you are facing the same dilemma then post here! Your advice/comments are most welcome!
Dom

Just waiting for mine to arrive, do you really hate it that much?

Its not that I hate it, it's just it has so many bugs I just wanted to know if other people were getting sick of it and sending it back.

Kaiser issues.

Ive owned my new Kaiser for a week now and thought I'd share some issues. The first is there is no internet sharing on the current rom. It currently uses wmodem with dun and I cant seem to get it to work right. I want my internet sharing (PAN) that my tytn had back. Another issue is that there is no external antenna connector on the back of the phone. I didnt know this when I ordered the phone and I need it for the weak signals that I get in certain areas when I travel. The battery drains much faster than the tytn I had, and I cant really figure out why. I cant tell if the GPS is staying on and draining the battery when Im done using it because there is no real way to tell. Other than these issues it's an awesome phone and the gps seems to work great, but I would like to get the internet tethering to work so I can use it with my laptop on the road. Has anyone had any luck with this?
Hi
The Kaiser has not yet been officially released, and the units out there are BETA/Test units, where did you get yours?
Because so few people have one and you are unlikely to be using the final ROM that everyone will get when it's officially released, I can't see you getting any help with your problems just now.
You will need to wait for the official release and hope someone puts the ROM up so you can at least get the latest version of the software.
Regards
Phil
Thanks Phil, I got mine on ebay from a nice man in Europe that frequents this site. I buy everything on ebay. I understand the situation with the beta test models, but you would think there would be other people with beta test models in the same situation that might be able to help out. You would also think that if htc released a bunch of pre-release (beta) units that they would want feedback from the people that own them. It would be nice to know if someone is working on new test roms for these phones and how you go about getting them. Thanks for the response. Brian
Hmm..if i dont lost my mind i belive that i saw a video review today where they showed the external antenna connector on the back of the phone..
Yeaa i found it again..Here you have the link

Check the first video revew "HTC P4550 (Kaiser) Demonstration by eXpansys
You can se how he uses his pen to lift the rubber protection thing.. Hm..Sorry for my bad english but just watch the review
Edit
spelling mistake
Oh my god, I fel like an idiot. I t is behind the rubber thing! It said gps on it so I didn't try to pry it up to look under it. Thanks for the help. Now if I could just get this thing to share internet access with my laptop I'd be happy. Does anyone know if theres a internet sharing (PAN) cab file that would enable it on the kaiser! Thanks again for all the help.
Never mind, got it to work, with a couple of files that were posted for me. This forum is great!

Returning ATT Tilt Before 30 day period

In light of the driver issues, I am seriously considering taking my Tilt back to ATT for a refund. I have a week left to make the move, but I wanted to ask others what their experiences have been when they have returned their devices.
Thank you for your comments and thanks to all of the folks that have been bringing the driver issues into the light.
I've had mine for a couple of months and love it. Driver issues are bad but i can live w/o them for now.
I don't have a Tytn II yet, but I will buy it, even knowing about the driver issues.
Yes, it's bad, but currently my use will be mostly professional. Not all hope is lost though, HTC is starting to get bad publicity from major news sites, so unless they want to lose money they will do something about the drivers.

Hi:
As long as there is no damage to your phone and within 30 days, AT&T will give you a refund, without any problems.

Goodbye useless TyTN 2 - Hello iPAQ 614c!

Well, I got so sick and tired of the constant problems... I've finally ditched my ludicrously over-priced & under-performing TyTn 2 and upgraded to a 614c.
I'm bitterly disappointed in HTC and the quality of their products and I'll never entertain buying another one again.
The main (and most frustrating problem) was the fact the caller could rarely hear me, even with full signal. 6 months of "I can't hear you, you are fading in and out" just adds to the frustration regarding the video quality & bluetooth/parrot 3100 pairing issues.
I honestly don't know how HTC have the bare-faced cheek to sell, what is essentially, an unfinished product.
Performance-wise, my old Mio A701 walked all over the TyTn 2. It was quicker to startup, quicker during use and the video quality was FAR superior. Sure, the standard stylus breaks every few months but that's a £2.99 fix!
To give you an idea of how little use I've got from it, the total call timer says I've spent just 3hrs 28 minutes on the phone. I've spent longer on the phone to HTC trying to get the soddin' thing fixed.
// rant
sucks for you, but you definately had a defective unit. i've never had any problems with people hearing me, and have always had great voice quality. i also have no problems pairing with my bluetooth headset and using it flawlessly with voice command. good luck
omar
I agree with omaralt.. No problems on my side with the Tilt...
My ipaq 614c also ships from Clove tomorrow that is Monday.
I am not generally too unsatisfied with my TyTn II but it is the slow EDGE that is getting on my nerves.
Now I have taken a risk as I have never before used a non-HTC thing before.
Just hope the ipaq does not disappoint me as I am already hearing something about low external speaker volume and not so easy to use touch scroll wheel
Call quality is not a problem I hace ever had with my TyTN 2. Like others have said, maybe you had a defective unit.
never had that with mine *knock on wood
Please let us know about the 614c when it arrives.
I'm very interested in the performance of this device cause it is an interesting alternative to the Kaiser.
My entire office is using the kaiser, we've just had our phone/network provider in(orange) to talk about the multitude of problems.
Poor video quality(without a doubt), constantly losing connection to the network, poor reception(next to other phones), screen crashing, slow rotation, etc.
Theres a rule in the office, anyone who says 'i hate my phone' has to buy a round of drinks. Thats how bad it's got.
I never had these issues with my XDA, official rom(5 or 6) or not. I'd only recommend it to anyone if they buy it offline, qualifying them for manufacturer updates, which of course don't seem to appear from the network providers and don't work properly if you try anyways.
Thankfully i didn't pay anything for this piece of turd, i'd be really pissed if i did.
it sounds like your finding your self an excuse to move to another unit. if those problems were bothing you so much, why didnt you just post them here and there would most likey be fixes for all of them. NO device is perfect no matter how expencive it is. there will always be problems ehre and there and thats why people are constantly fixing them.
i personally am happy with my tilt i have never had any problems that you have mentioned before. its either the areea that your in or yes it oculd be that you have a bad phone.

If you had done your research before posting that, you would realise that I 'did' in fact post all the problems here and several people chimed in saying they'd had the same issues. After 6 months, 3 returns and several frustrated customers, I don't need to find an excuse to replace the unit. I'm replacing it because as many of you have already proven, it's a half-baked attempt at a decent PDA. The video issue is unforgivable, so too is the lack of response from HTC.

It's certainly not the area. I have had numerous phones over the years and never experienced these issues before. Nokia 3210, Nokia 7650, Sony/E T68Motorola V525, Mio A701 and they didn't struggle to get a signal. The TyTn 2 says it has full signal, but the microphone still fades in and out.
Maati...
The iPAQ 614c will be arriving on Tuesday, 1st April (no joke ) so I'll let you know what it's like.

Apart from the keyboard, it's better equiped than the TyTn 2. How it looks really doesn't bother me... I'm more interested in useable functionality.
In terms of speed & video quality, it wipes the floor with the TyTn 2! I didn't expect a brand new, £480 smartphone to lag when scrolling! I have a 2210 here testing a new RDBMS system, and that runs perfectly.
You have to admit, HTC have dropped the ball in some areas!
Only problem I have had was when I first purchased the unit, swapped it out with a new one - no problems.
The video really is not that big of a deal - Coremedia player plays the video fine for what I require and not that picky. Everything is sweet!
Find it hard to think that the mass units sold of this device and the success HTC & ATT&T has had with it that only a selective few have problems.
Good luck with the new device..

i understand when people are frustrated over devices especially when they dont do what they are sappose to do. taht is one of the reasons why i spent so much money in the past swapping out phone because there was never one that would have to meet my expectations, but then i realized that in this day and age there cannot be "perfect"
i am sure when you swap out for the ipaq you are going to find things on that you dont like.
the ipaq is newer so..... could be a change
Hi Mike 19722
Why do you say so. Just because of the looks and size or do you have you experienced the device. You know I am worried because mine is on order from Clove as a replacement for my TyTn II. Hope I have not made a wrong decision.
Thanks and do let me know if it is just the looks which bother you.

Perhaps andaroo exaggerated a bit, but there is some truth behind it. With the exception of smaller size and the addition of GPS, the Kaiser is more or less on par with my years-old Blue Angel (which still works nice without a single patch or update). I have had so many phones, but the Kaiser gave me the maximum headaches, this is for sure. We're really doing field tests & debugging for HTC here.

this as posted by visionit, not by myself!
I disagree with the above statement!
moreover I would say the htc/se experia 1 is an unfinished product!
I understand why you would want to defend your own phone, but you cannot ignore the fact that HTC have done little to assist frustrated users wrt the gfx issues, laggy scrolling, slow functionality and the overall 'dated' feel of the product.
As I said earlier, the Mio A701 (whilst missing some of the functionality of the TyTn 2) still outperformed it in nearly every way. That is unforgivable! The TyTn 2 was nearly double the price and in my eyes, it's not even half as good.
Faulty products I can deal with, but pi$$ poor service AND a faulty product I cannot! 3 returns, countless telephone calls, 6 months, several angry customers... where would 'you' draw the line?
I'd disagree about the 614c being 'ugly', but I guess that's subjective. I couldn't care less if it was pink with frills; as long as it worked properly. The TyTn 2 (as good as it looks) just doesn't perform as well as it should. The hardware is good, but it's bottle-necked by something...

Why does everyone appear to complain about their kaiser?

I had this phone for almost two months now and I have not experienced anything that has turned me away from another HTC device. I purchased it with only 35mins of call time for only $210 and I believe its worth double that. My life has become more organized, I get much better reception, I can use the internet at decent speeds, hell and the video quality isn't that bad, i got TT6, and so on.
I've really enjoyed this device, xda, and the learning process.
i've paid 800 cdn when it first came out and dont regret one bit...yes maybe there are issues with the phone but which phone is perfect? its all about personal prefs and give and take..to me this phone is good and i can live with whatever wrong with it...having said that its not the perfect phone cuz everyone wants this n that...i'll still switch over to the x1 just because its new and id like to try it out...if its not good then i'll go back to kaiser...if kaiser isnt good...maybe i'll look into another machine...but a phone is a phone...its not perfect...unless we manufacture our own phones
Since most forums are essentially self-help groups, it's not such a surprise. When I think of my previous WM5 i-mate - the hourly soft re-sets, unreadable screen in sunlight, constant need to re-calibrate the screen, poor receptoion (even though at the time I thought it was the coolest thing) - I thank my lucky stars!
chuk
i agree, its not perfect and the camera is rubbish, i still have the hermes and i prefer the camera on that but, updated hardware and built in gps does it for me.
People should start complaining about things that matter!
I'm irritated on principle about the driver issue - I strongly believe they should have supplied whatever software support was necessary to get the best out of the hardware, because we all paid for the latter and we shouldn't have to get it working ourselves.
On the other hand, generally the performance is acceptable and as a whole the device works very well. I'd probably be more annoyed if I'd paid a lot of money for it, but as it was quite cheap for me I'm more than happy with it overall. But HTC need to take note of the driver furore and the damage it's quite fairly done to their reputation.

I don't! ;-)
No, seriously: I thinks that's a false impression. In this forum you will find a lot of perfectionists who always want to get out the most of their phones. And even if they do, they still look forward in buying the next generation. At least that description fits me. ;-)
I don't complain about mine and I was one of the first people in my area to buy one. I Think someone cried wolf regarding the video driver and now everyone wants to be cool too. I would like to see them but my phone kicks other phones butts for breakfast.
I was perfectly happy with my 8125 (Wizard) until I saw Engadget's preview of the Tilt. I immediately pre-ordered it through AT&T Premier, and had it in hand on launch day. Even though I will probably buy the Xperia sometime next year, I am in no rush to get rid of my Tilt.
As a noob to the whole genre of ppc's... I have to admit from everything i have seen here at work with other pda's and ppc's, My tilt kicks the s--t out of the rest. I know there are complaints about the video drivers but f--k it, i didnt buy my tilt to watch videos... i bought it to take care of my daily needs for when i cant get to my computer....
Probably because it is human nature to complain......
I've had mine since the first of October 07, and haven't really had any issues.
I had to return it because the USB port died. Didn't really like the camera
until the hotfix came out, which pretty much fixed the camera issue for me.
Exactly... Ive upgraded like twice and got the fixes I wanted and I'll tell you I wont get rid of this phone for awhile.
I think the only real reason for a complaint is the driver issue...
people had expectations that the device would out perform a hermes for video playback because of the data sheet and the graphics chip. Then when people got it and it shuddered and such due to no driver support people got mad.
I understand, people bought the phone expecting one thing, spent a lot of $$ and it did not meet there expectations.
Maybe it was their bad for having expectations but, they were founded on qualcomms own marketing for the 7200 chip.
Oh I understand what you're saying about the driver issues, I'd be pissed too if I had bought for those issues. Its HTC/Qualcomms f--- up for putting out the ifo like they did. They have a right to be upset if they bought the phones expecting something that wasnt delivered.
No complaints on my side so far! XDA helped with any issues and couln't be happier. I too will look into the SE Xperia but the Tilt will stay
If it weren't for me finding XDA I probably wouldn't have figured out the possibilities of my tilt. And I have found some really awesome stuff for it.
Sure, I am annoyed that my Kaiser is not being all that it could be as its missing some drivers, but I still like it and don't think I have ever complained.
However, I liked my Hermes. If I had not broken it I would probably not have upgraded when my contract ends in June (I only want a 12 month contract max and am a student, so not a heavy spender and can't really afford £150 for the handset as well as the contract).
I see a note about a HTC Raphael - it might get me to upgrade, but then I might just ignore it as I don't dislike the kaiser. It's not like the Wizard which really annoyed me by the time I upgraded. At the moment the only thing I am interested in is moving to a rolling 1 month contract (which is not a bad deal) and I might buy the Raphael without a contract.
The tilt is the best phone i've ever had. Who says the camera is rubbish?! did you see the panoramic shots some dude took and posted here. Those are clear as crystal. I mean geez people want a perfect cell phone with nikon capabilities. People can't seem to remember that it's a PHONE!!.. if you look at how far we've gotten in technology it isn't a bad device. I personally won't get the Xperia. I'll wait for the next HTC launch. Videos play fine on my phone and I have full movies on my SD card and stream music and videos from my home pc with no problems. People just like *****ing. Like I said before nobody started *****ing until Bill Nye the Science guy started that driver post.
read my signature..
remember people... quest for perfection ends at you feeling empty and betrayed.
I have taken mine to Hell and back ...the fact that it still works is amazing
I realise it has some drawbacks..but I am fine with it. Not changing it anytime soon.
Im quite happy with my tytnII had it for six months now,it is a shame that the drivers are not there for the imageon card, mainly because im a bit of a gamer and was looking forward to seeing what it was capable of.
Unfortunately it seems its not upto much, the slow down on call of duty is laughable i think my nokia 6680 could out peform it.
That aside i am very pleased with it.
If it wasnt that i was put onto this site by someone i probably would have sent it back (HTC TAKE NOTE)...I got this phone free on cotract at the time they were going for £440 pound on ebay i would have been seriously pissed if id paid cash for it outright.
A set of drivers would be sooooo nice,so keep putting in the hard work those who are working on them, and thanks to xda devs a invaluable lifeline to many.

[Q] Rcieved dock with issues, What to do now?

howdy peeps,
I live in Canada and I just received my dock that I purchased from bestdirect.ca. As I opened the box right away I had a bad feeling as the date on the box said 2013.10 (supposedly defective models). it had the usual loose hinge and connection loss upon movement issues . Now, bestdirect.ca has a 15 day return for full refund (customer satisfaction or w.e) policy. What do you guys think I should do? Send for refund? replace with bestdirect? send to asus? What is the best approach for this? Im fairly new to RMA returning procces so I need some advice here. Also, Has anyone received dock with supposedly fixed models? has anyone received the 2013.11 and 2013.12 docks? If so, has the issues actually been fixed? please let us know. thanks for any help!
I would recommend a swap for one that is from batch 2013.11 or later.
When that is not possible then send it back and get money returned.
Then order one later that has proven no problems.

Personally, I'm waiting until we get verification that working docks are being produced, sold, and received by users before I order another one. Mine had problems and I sent it back to Amazon for a refund the very next day.

Yeah, this seems like the best option. Bail out until there's a verified solution. Prices will only go down over time, anyway.
k then that seems to be the way to go. i will ask for the supposedly fixed batch docks, if they cant fulfill that then i will take refund and hold untill confirmed fixed units arrive. Although im still interested to know if anyone has the 2013.11 or 2013.12 batch dock, and if they has fixed the issue in that. other than that, thnx for all the help guys :good:

I have a 2013/09 and it has no issues a bit of movement but it has never lost connectivity
for those that say it will eventually break then fine let it as long as it happens in warranty at least then i will get a replaced dock likely that may not have these issues but i doubt much would change.
till then i`m happily using my tablet with no issues besides asus jp untimely release of 4.3 or better.
still waiting and confirmed not rolling out yet. in fact when speaking to asus about it they didn`t even know if a update was in the works typical call center shenanigans.
See thats what i hate and really cant stand: the wiggling. its absolutely anoyying. i want it to be firm and sturdy with no movement at all, so as though it feels like a mini laptop. i also dont like the click buttons on the track pad. very stiff and hard to press. dammit asus....

Well I hope that from builddate 2013.11 the flexing is much less.
But the quality of the dock can't compare with the quality of the TF700 dock. That was so much better. Sad but I rather pay Euro 50,- more for good quality then what they did now.
