ROM upgrade from the device itself? - MDA III, XDA III, PDA2k, 9090 Software Upgrading

Can the ROM upgrade be performed without Activesync? Using a memory card perhaps? It seems that people have experimented a lot by mixing up the ROM upgrades - are you all still having to use Activesync to install them in the end?
I cannot get Activesync to work, I get Erorr 101 connection error every time, and wondered if there is a way I can install the ROM upgrade manually?

Please anyone help asap, thanks so much and much blessing
Here's an answer to part of your problem:
As long as you have a USB connection, you can re-flash your phone (provided it's in either the bootloader or connected to your system via active sync 4.1 (I don't know about the beta 4.5 of active sync - which changed the way your PC connects to your phone as I understand it)). You may have to try several different ROMs to re-flash, but generally, I have found that doing the following almost always guarantee's a re-flash:
1) remove the SIM card
2) after every attempt, disconnect the phone from your USB port and then reconnect it
3) between attempts, remove the battery while you are setting up your system (you can't flash a phone w/ a dead battery, so unless you have a way to charge the battery other than the phone, you need to protect the amount of charge you have like it's your lifeline!)
4) I have had more success re-flashing a phone that is in bootloader mode by using the original ROM .exe file instead of trying to extract the files from it and THEN run the update utility.
5) If your phone came w/ a 2.x ROM, I wouldn't try to downgrade it to a 1.x ROM as this has never worked for me. Try flashing it w/ a 2.x or higher ROM only.
Hope this helps (oh, and rumor has it you should use the USB ports on the back of your PC, not the ones on the side or front!)

I-Mate K-JAM Radio

Hi guys,
I am guessing my problem is the fact that there is something wrong with the devices radio, more the radio rom.
I a while back flashed my dad's KJAM, and it all worked fine, he however has not used the actual phone part of the device since then, and now that he needs it, its not working.
The phone is not in flight mode, and it doesnt ask for a pin, as thats how he set it before I flashed it.
The phone keeps searching for service, and when I try to manually set the network, it keeps comming up with some or other problem.
The phone worked before I flashed it, so I am guessing it is the Radio ROM.
I am thinking of ugrading him to WM6, is this recommended at all? Which thread is best to follow for upgrading him to WM6?
His current details are:
ROM Version: 2.16.9.1 WWE
ROM Date: 2/6/06
Radio Version: 02.07.10
ProtocolVersion 413.1.03
ExtROM: 2.16.9.101
Any help will be appreciated.
P.S. I did just try to the radio rom that is on the xda ftp, for the wizard, I downloaded and tried to load the REAL_Radio_2.61.11 ROM, but that does not want to load for some or other reason, it first complained about the radio update util and said I must update or something, the second time I tried it was a communication error. I am using my JASJAR's USB cable, is this a problem at all?
Try to change the radio rom to 2.19 or higher but i recommend you to flash first the 2.19 if that fails then try more higher.. i guess 2.2x and 2.6x something like that... i forgot..
Ok, u got a link for me for those ROMS?
wait a sec..
If you search and read all the stickies thread you might encounter this one your self..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=268031
There at that thread have a varius radio roms to download..
goodluck!..
post the result afterward
Thanks...I didnt see that one...I will have a look...shot for the help...
Ok, ive tried a few different things.
I tried to get it to connect with activesync, but it just doesnt want to work, I have also attempted a hard reset, and activesync doesnt work either.
Before I did a hard reset activesync 'did something', and a message came up saying it couldnt get an IP address from the server, and on the PC activesync came up with some other thing saying it cannot connect to the Windows Mobile Powered Device.
After the hard reset, I try activesync again, and now absolutally nothing happens on the phone. On the PC the little network icon comes up aqquiring an IP address and dissappears, and the just sits there...
At this point I ran a exe file on the K-JAM, to put it into bootloader mode, I ran the update tool, and again it complained about the update utility, again not changing anything, I ran it, and then it gave a communication / connection error, and a third time also a communication / connection error.
I tried only one radio rom, I am going to try it with the oldest version on that page, if that doesn't work, then I don't know. I tried it with ActiveSync 4.5 and 4.2.
In the mean time I tried the original ROM file from clubimate, that actually loaded, and worked, except the network still isnt working.
I also tried syncing the phone on another pc, and funny enough that worked.
On trying to load the new Radio ROM, it started the update process, and at that moment the phone jumps to bootloader mode, obviously the activesync connection gets lost, the update tool waits a bit, and then suddenly complains about the update tool, saying I need a new version or something.
I have checked the bootloader version of the phone, and it is version 2.x.
I try it again and then I get a connection error....I really need to get my dads phone working again.
Any ideas?
Not sure which Radio's you are trying but go grab a Radio Only ROM. TMobile 2.19.11 UK seems to be a very good and stable one. These are found in the ftp area: ftp://xda:[email protected]/Wizard .
Hope that helps.
Thanks for the help.....ive tried 3 different ones from there, they all do the same thing...so its a bit wierd.....
On the other side of the coin I decided to stick on another sim card, and it works just fine on the other sim card
So the radio is working just fine afterall.....just got back from the service provider and they rekon either the sim card is damaged or its a network error....so lets see what happens.....
Thanks to everybody for the help...
lol..
so its just the simcard after all..
lol yeah....
Although I would still like to know why I can't update the radio anyway...
isnt it because of your activesync?
I don't know what it is...
I used it on another PC alltogether and activesync worked just fine...the update tool interacts with the device, starts the update process, and then the phone goes to bootloader mode, activesync obviously losing the connection, the update tool waits a while and then suddenly says something about the update utility being old or something, I need a new one or what ever....
Then while in bootloader mode I try the update again and then I get a connection error.
Its all wierd.....

Updating radio - Disconnects From ActiveSync During SPL Mode

I have been trying to update my ROM lately with a new Radio and have been having one issue. Whenever I run the update utility, the screen will enter SPL Mode (all white) like it should, but when it enters SPL mode the activesync connection is lost, every time. I cannot get it connected again until I reboot the phone back into wm6, and then it connects to activesync just fine.
How can I get it to stay connected long enough for me to flash?
So to begin, when I want to update the radio, I should be able to update it in the same way I install a new ROM, correct? I use a SoftSPL file I found here and simply copy main file into that folder and then run start-SPL.
Anyone else experience this? It just seems to always disconnect and cause errors right before it updates the ROM.
The only thing that I can think of that could be causing it is the phone fell in some water for a couple seconds about a week ago. It's been drying out and seems to run ok again as of today. I was able to flash the ROM a couple times, so I know it's possible to flash. It took a couple of tries, but eventually did flash. However, I've tried about 10 times for the radio only (2.71.11) and it won't work.
Any ideas, other than it cannot be fixed due to water damage?
Note: I was just able to flash back to the cingular stock ROM (was using Jaguar 4.0). The stock ROM always seems to flash easily without difficulties - can unofficial ROMs not be flashed in the same manner? Just an .exe file that takes care of everything and never has activesync issues? It's flashing the stock ROM as I type, and it does not show the activesync connection is active. It was at first, but was lost (or appears so, anyways) as the flash began. The stock ROM is much easier to flash in my opinion and hasn't given me difficulties thus far, although other ROMs used to flash easily as well - not so much now.

First,You don't have to flash Radio Rom using 'SoftSPL',its an EXE file,it'll flash straight like an official stock rom,as it doesn't contain any IPL/SPL in it,it won't effect the bootloaders and the phone, its safe to flash to any device,G3 or G4,just connect your phone with pc via usb cable and run the Ruu included in the Radio Rom,it'll start to upgrade.
Secondly,YES! official stock Roms are easy to flash, cuz it contains official G3/G4 IPL/SPL included in them,it doesn't require CID unlocking the phone, whereas, custom build wm6 Roms require the phone to be CID unlocked and doesn't include IPL/SPL in it,so a G4 device cannot be CID unlocked, therefore, using 'SoftSPL' or 'HardSPL',its tricked into temporarily CID unlocked status, but actually its not CID unlocked.Hope its clear now

Hardspl without activesync?

i have been looking around the wiki and i have found no solution to this. My activesync does not work and i have been installing all my applications and programs by using my memory card. I read that in order to install hardspl u need to use activesync. Is there a way to get around this by using a cab file from the memory card?
Do you mean ativsync on your phone or on your PC. If PC what OS are you using. Need a bit more info to help
im runin on xp but im not tryin to fix my activesync. ive been tryin to get it runnin for the past two months trying every possible solution. but now im just wonderin if its possible to instal hardspl by using the card
fraid its not. What actually happens when you try and connect activsync. You are using version 4.5 yeah? It could be something as simple as an unchecked option but I need as much info as you can give me on the problem buddy. Go for gold and spam if you need to
u can contact pof but as far as my knowledge goes that can't be done.
um whenever i try to install activesync it just stops at 99 percent and it says that there was an error and activesync could not be installed. ive tried the installer from the website and not from the cd too. it was the latest version and everything. it just gives me the same error.

Hard SPL via MicroSD card

Hello all,
I'm having big problems syncing my phone to pc...is the above possible via MicroSD card...I know flashing a rom is but can I hard SPL it in the same way
Thanks in advance
I don't believe it is possible unfortunately.
What issues are you having? Have you tried updating (or even downgrading them depending on what you currently have) the usb drivers?
The probleme that most of us flashing new cooked ROMs & my device get stucked several times. Likely it is connected via USB, Otherwise I can not do any thing.
Also due to several ROM flash times the USB connection in HD (or other devices) might broken.
This why we need a way to install USPL or HSPL via SD card.
Can some one help?
Regards
What I don't understand is how can a usb port become 'broken' due to flashing several custom build roms?
I too having a problem with the usb port on my blackstone. It can only be charged but not synchronized with pc anymore. I had HTC pick up my phone to have the mainboard replaced. Luckily the phone was still under warranty, so it won't cost me much.
Can someone explain?
i had similar probs ...
went to regedit , local maschine, software, microsoft,
windows ce services and changed to (1) the key : hasusbdevice
after this no problems anymore
it seems that a program installation changes this number from 1 to 0.
i have win 7 32

This is not possible infortunately. However you do not need your device sync'ed with your pc to run HSPL. You only need to put device into bootloader and then connect it to pc. Bottom of bootloader should change from 'serial' to 'usb'. If not, you will need to update usb drivers. All this info can be found on this thread, no need for another
