G icon always on in rom 1.40 - MDA III, XDA III, PDA2k, 9090 Software Upgrading

Upgraded to rom 1.40, the G (gprs) icon is always on... seems I am always connected but in 1.22.04 rom G icon was always Off. except when I was downloading something I suppose. What does it mean? I'm a little bit confused by this Icon. GPRS bytes are very expensive here in italy and I am not so rich
Thanx for your answers...

The white G means that GPRS is available, not that is it on. When you connect to GPRS, the icons changes to the G with arrows.
This is different than previous versions of the rom.
Otherwise, you did something else wrong (extended rom mishap, full restore after upgrade, etc)

i have noticed the same think.....
can the G icon be removed somehow?

No. There is a significant difference between the status icons of the older roms and this new 1.40 rom.
First of all, the phone and connectivity icons are no longer TOGETHER. They have been seperated out. The Icons showing you the signal strengh is phone icon, which deals with all things phone, and the typically "G" icon, is the connectivitiy icon, which deals with all things internet/networking.
With the older roms, when you connected to GPRS or Wifi, a seperate black icon would pop up showing you what you are connected to. Now, the connectivity icon shows always shows you WHAT IS AVAILABLE (so it displays a white G most of the time because GPRS is available, when you turn on WIFI, it displays a WIFI symbol) and when you connect, it shows you the corresponding connection icon.
The only real difference then, appears when you aren't connected. The old rom would show no second icon, but the new icon shows you what you CAN connect to.
I hope that explained it.

EDGE/GRPS icons on AKU 2.3 ROM - WTF??

Finally after waiting patiently, i took the plunge and upgraded. Glad I did, apart from vibrate working for incoming emails, the phone seems to be working better.
However, what is up with those EDGE/GRPS icons in AKU 2.3? They have a big E or G that now just means you are in GPRS/EDGE coverage, then they took the signal bar and added another E or G when you have an active connection?
What a waste of screen real estate - talk about being redundant. Anyway to change the icons back to the standard way using a reg tweak or CAB?
Thanks.
*BUMP*
I noticed the same thing. I searched and haven't found a solution yet. Anyone?
No "fix" is in the works. This is actually a feature whose usefulness will only become apparent when you go to a TyTN. In that case, the big "E" will change to something different when 3G capabilities are available and the small "E" will show any one of 2 (will become 3 when HSDPA capabilities are added) different connection icons depending on the actual connection speed.
Today, the only time the big "E" icon changes is when you are WiFi or direct connected (via ActiveStink).

Grey edge icon

Hi, ocassionaly I can see that the Edge icon on my Diamond turns grey (it's shadowed) - never seen this state before, anyone know what it means?
I also have been getting that. I dont think it matters if it's EDGE, GPRS, 3G, or HSDA as I have been getting it with 3G after a soft rest
when I put a 3 SIM card in.. in place of the H icon I get an icon that looks like a mountain... triangle.. what's that mean? any ideas?

Triangle means roaming - so beware the costs!
When it's grey, means that it's not "Attached"...
Bye
I kept getting a "Grey" H icon and I actually found that I couldnt connect to the Internet. Also some of my texts wouldnt send and I couldnt make calls either (not sure if its related or not)
The only way I found to solve it was to switch HSDPA off, now I get the 3G symbol but its not "Grey" anymore and everythings working fine.
this is issue is also reffered as "black icons issue". have a search over this forum and you will find many reports of the same.
No, that's not true. This is completely different issue.
Also it's not true that the gray icon denotes unattached GPRS. For unattached GPRS, there is no extra icon, you just see the aerial icon instead of small letter inside the "signal strength" icon.
The grey state is weird, never experienced before on any device, and it's not explained anywhere so far.
I couldn't find it right now (though I'll still search it), but I've changed a setting yesterday and after this, the "grey" icons appeared. Untill then I had the "filled"/normal ones. That setting is for telling if the data connection is ALWAYS available or only BY REQUEST/ON DEMAND (from an application that needs it).
As soon as I'll find it again, I'll post it here.
i disabled the GPRS auto attach and the grey 3g icon started to appear...no longer the filled one...
I have the same problem since yesterday with edge on my workplace: big grey "E" icon, and it's impossible to connect to the net. But I have 2 or 3 network bars and a little "E" in the top left of them. At home I have HSDPA and no problem
i have a grey 3g icon... only came on after i disabled the GPRS auto attach function in advanced config...
I had disabled that function too. I've just re-enabled it and soft reset but I see no difference, it can't connect in edge

I had an isue a long time ago.
When I disabled/detached my GPRS, it was detached from my provider, ie it was detached on the mobile central.
Only way I could get it working again was to call my mobile provider to have them enable it again.
Yeah but it works on 3G and HSDPA, it's not the same parameters?

This is correct. Grey means Gprs/Edge/3G/Hspda is available, but not necessarily attached. When you connect (fire up a browser/mail/any other internet proggie) it will go black (and a lot bigger and uglier I might add). It's a bit confusing cos when you disconnect, it STAYS black, which is probably a bug.

internet access

hi
I just got the diamond, my first htc phone my free internet browsing comes on in a couple of weeks but till then just wanted to have a quick browse, just wondered once ive closed the web page down does that mean its automatically disconnected from the net or do i have to manually turn it off, i dont want to get a huge bill from surfing the net the whole time when i think im not connected
thanks
The icon that displays the signal strength tells you whether you are connected or not. If it has an antenna icon, you are not connected. Any other icon (such as a "H", "E" or "3G") on the signal strength icon (notice how the antenna is above the strength) means you are connected. There are options to automatically disconnect after a while, I use this.
ok thanks for that mine says 3g at the top so how do i remove that to disconnect?
many thanks
ok had a look through the manual and what i think the icon (3g) i have is showing that it is available there are no signal strenths below it and according to the manual this is what shows im connected or two arrows if its connecting does that sound right?
thanks

Service icon won't refresh

Upon some reading of the user manual, I have decided to edit my post.
The service icon on my Tilt (shows the big E, 3G, H, etc), which also shows the wi-fi radio and whether I'm connected to a computer, has stopped refreshing itself.
After starting up, it shows the opposing arrows with an "x" indicating no service. I do have service, though. If I do anything (activate wi-fi, connect to a computer, etc), the icon changes to that, but once done, it stays there. It doesn't refresh back to the big H (or E) that should be there, nor does it go all the way back to the no service indicator.
The most recent thing I did before this happened was to try a registry tweak to remove the clock (and hopefully put up the battery meter) in PointUI Home 2. Even after undoing the tweak, the icon still doesn't work.
Any and all help is greatly appreciated.
If it helps have things make sense, it's the big connectivity icon, not the little service icon with the bars.
If I connect via wi-fi, when I turn off wi-fi, the icon stays the same. If I connect to a computer, when I disconnect, the icon stays the two opposing arrows. After a soft reset, I get the two broken arrows.
Regardless, I never get the E or H I used to normally have.
Help anyone?
I tried installing JUVS's Large Title Bar and while the small icon on the title bar wasn't right, the large icon for the connectivity was the large H I've been missing. I do have the small H with my signal bars, but have not had the big connectivity H icon (or E or G) for a couple weeks.
Does anyone have any clue?
Is the lack of suggestions due to things not being clear, or is everyone actually stumped?

TILT/KAISER and no data plan

Hello, I have a HTC TILT running WM 6.1 that I have purchased from ebay.
Recently I have noticed the 'E' - edge icon in the top right of my phone.
I am wondering if I might be being using any 'data' while this is on because I am not paying for an unlimited data plan.
I have searched and tested several programs...
Bandswitch - supposed to allow me to change the bands im using, however I have tried all of the settings and I still get the edge icon.
KaiserTweak - I have disabled Media Net and the other options
NoData - I have disabled ATT ISP GPRS, Media Net, and My Connection
And further more I have manually deleted the settings of these three under ... start - settings - connections - advanced - select networks - edit
----
thoughts? Am I still potentially using data?
ps, off topic - I have always turned my phone 'off' while using wifi and browsing... would I be using JUST the wifi connections while connected?
my my...dude you've got to read the manual that comes with the device. if you don't have the manual, i think you can download it as a pdf.
to put it simply, windows mobile tells you about your currently in-use connections and currently available connections in the following way.
all you have to do is look at TWO icons to get a full idea of whats going on.
FIRST ICON:
in the top bar, going from left to right, you will see a BIG icon that will show one of the following:
1. big "G" (this means that GPRS is AVAILABLE on the cell tower your phone is currently connected to)
2. big "E" (this means that EDGE is AVAILABLE on the cell tower your phone is currently connected to)
3. big "H" (this means that HSDPA/3G is AVAILABLE on the cell tower your phone is currently connected to)
4. a transmitting tower kind of icon (this means that your WIFI is ON. if WIFI is CONNECTED, the transmitting tower icon will have some arrows on it)
5. two arrows pointing away from each other and occasionally spinning indicates that the device is connected to your PC via ActiveSync.
summary: this first icon tells you which data speed is AVAILABLE on your phone network OR that WIFI is on and whether or not you are connected to some WIFI access point OR the current status of the ActiveSync connection.
SECOND ICON:
immediately to the right of the first icon described above, you will see an icon showing your phone signal strength. on the top-left corner of this icon, you will see one of the following mini-icons:
1. small "Y" shaped triangular symbol (the device is simply connected to a cell tower and your phone should be able to dial out and receive calls)
2. small "G" (this means you are connected to GPRS...your data connection may be in use. see summary below.)
3. small "E" (this means you are connected to EDGE...your data connection may be in use. see summary below.)
4. small "H" (this means you are connected to HSDPA/3G...your data connection may be in use. see summary below.)
5. small phone receiver icon (a call is in progress)
summary: this icon exclusively shows what your device is doing with the phone network.
PUTTING THE 2 TOGETHER:
if WIFI is on and connected (you can tell by looking at the first icon) AND your data connection is available and connected (by looking at the second icon), then the device uses WIFI, to the best of my knowledge. if ActiveSync is connected AND WIFI is connected AND your data connection is connected, then the device uses the ActiveSync connection to the best of my knowledge.
its really not that difficult to understand once you grasp the concept. hope this helps.
I appreciate the help, thank you. I bought it from ebay so i just got the model and the charger.
however...
1. small "Y" shaped triangular symbol (the device is simply connected to a cell tower and your phone should be able to dial out and receive calls)
2. small "G" (this means you are connected to GPRS...your data connection may be in use. see summary below.)
3. small "E" (this means you are connected to EDGE...your data connection may be in use. see summary below.)
4. small "H" (this means you are connected to HSDPA/3G...your data connection may be in use. see summary below.)
5. small phone receiver icon (a call is in progress)
summary: this icon exclusively shows what your device is doing with the phone network.

I understand...kind of... "your data connection may be in use" ...
im just looking for a yes or no really. If im texting and just calling and i have an EDGE icon will I be billed for extra data usage?
If the E is in a big square then it's just showing network connected to, if the E is above the signal bars then your data is connected to the network... Since you say using no data i imagine first is applicable
You was already given a rundown and on that info should be able to make your own assumption since we can't see your phone....
Texts and calls don't get charged for data "unless 3G call Video", you would need to be using an application that uses data to be charged for it.

to connect to gprs/3g internet, you have to have correct settings, most importantly apn. this is what those tweaks do; they change your apn from correct for example "internet" to "internet00" so only what you really have to do is, make sure it's that way. or no settings at all. withour correct apn you won't connect. nodata works pretty reliable with doing so.
