PersonalSettings.CAB or Sprite Backup....which one is best?? - MDA III, XDA III, PDA2k, 9090 Software Upgrading

I've been trying to figure out which is best for me...to do a personalsettings.cab or to use Sprite and I'm wondering if I can get some advice. I've got 2 scenarios:
1) I want to upgrade my radio and I'll have to do a hard reset after. I really don't want to reinstall everything again and I don't want to lose my SMS, MMS, email settings. Which method would be best?
2) I want to later upgrade my ROM and again, I'd like to backup my programs and my personal settings lik SMS, MMS, etc....
Could I use Sprite for both? I heard Sprite my restore items which shouldn't be restored under #2. A personal CAB file seems to fit the bill for #2, but #1 seems to need more.
Any advice would be great!
Thanks,
Tom

saving threaded messages

Hi there!
as o2 germay now released another software update for the shiny diamond, i'm
going to install it today the whole backup thing is done, but there is one little
point i'm not quite sure about. is it possible to save the complete messages in
their threaded dialogues? i hope you understand what i'm talking about the
message backup is done by pimbackup. when i revert backups done by
pimbackup, the messages are all there, but not in there dialouges i can see
what everybody wrote to me, but i can't see what i have answered ...
can anybody help with that ?
cheers!
PimBackup doesn't save the threading unfortunately and i haven't seen any other decent backup programs
i hope someone else can help as i need it too!
Sprite backup will backup and restore your messages preserving the correct threading.
Where did you find this "new" update?
There's only the old 1.93.207.2 ROM on their Site?

free texts backup that works?

so pim backup will save them and let you restore but when you do they go out of order in threaded and all incoming first then sent
has anyone found a program that will put them back in order after a restore?

used to have this problem to, try this, before you restore after a flash, use advanced configuration to disable threaded messaging, the soft reset, now restore from pim back up, once done, go back to advanced config and set messaging back to threaded, soft reset when done, once the device boots back up, go to your messages and you can see them restore, give it time, some times it will first restore on the messages you received, but wait a little while longer and then it will start to put your responses in there to, it takes time.. good luck
lupe
alright givin it a shot later today
thanks

I constantly have that problem, but I also noticed that if you perform another restore (or 2 or 3) and overwrite the previously restored messages, eventually they come back in their reverse chronological order that they were in originally. Try it out and see if it works for you. I can't reproduce it consistently and I try different things, like going into the Inbox and watching the threads populate from there.

Backup call logs

What is the best progam to enable me to backup all my call logs, i.e. numbers dialled, numbers received plus my text inbox/sent items and let me restore them after I've upgraded my phones ROM?
There is a program called PIMbackup I believe but am not sure if that's what I need and is any good?
PIMBackup is working great
i am using version 2.5 (but the newer is the 2.8 it seems)
with it you can backup calls, sms, mails and everything
(first use backup mode, that create a PIM file, than you can use RESTORE mode to restore the pim file)
a must after each hard reset!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=299705 i think this is the therad for pimbackup
Thank You I'll try it.
Are there any decent alternatives in case I don't like this program?
Try Jeyo Mobile Companion

You could use Pim Backup too.
Try Jeyo Mobile Companion. I used that to backup both call history and sms prior to flash any new ROM. The drawback is this software can't backup your MMS. In fact it causes program to crash when there's MMS with attachment in your inbox. Maybe can google around for "Jeyo alternative". Hope you could find one that's suitable for your needs.
PimBackup is for me the most suitable way. Very easy and reliable. Just search for it... I've about 4000 sms on my device, the backup takes app. 10minutes,
the restore about 30min.

Markus
ok i'll try pim backup. thx a lot guys

sprite backup contacts trouble

I backed up my contacts, call history and text with sprite.
When I restore everything looks great BUT when I make a call the call shows up as "unknown" and all new history (and text) show up as the number and doesn't reference the contacts database.
Anyone know how to fix this... this is the second rom I've had this issue on.
I'm sure the answer is out there and I have searched... just such an odd thing to try and figure out keywords to form an effective query.
I also faced the similar issue.
There will be contacts list but it will not match when i make the call.
My assumption is do not install the backup.exe file directly first install the sprite backup cab file. then ren the backup.
It has worked for me. try to install the same version of the cab in which the backup is taken
Thanks for the suggestion but unfortunately, that didn't work.
I ended up using a pimbackup for the contacts (which would lock up importing my text) so I used Sprite for my text. Dirty but it worked.
Also, Sprite back up does not work from WM version to version. You cannot do a system back up in 6.0 and restore in 6.1 or 6.1 to 6.5.
THAT must be the problem!
Thanks for that info... luckily I backed it up several ways.
I would recommend trying SPB Backup. Works well for me, far better results than Sprite. Also 3G backup for contacts & sms is a useful tool.
